Tabula Rasa Part 3--Insulation for the NV200 Camper

  • In this video, I show how I'm adding sound insulation to my NV200 camper, along with a little extra thermal insulation. The materials used in the video are listed below. Find out more at:
    odysseycamper.com/van-life-new...
    My goal was to reduce the transmission of road noise into the Nissan NV200 and to reduce any condensation on the steel panels during cold weather. I chose NOT to make a perfectly insulated van because that works against you in the warm weather. When it's hot, inches of insulation will trap the heat and radiate it out all night. If you have an air conditioner that might be the way to go, but if you are relying on the cool night air, thick insulation will make it stuffy inside. The insulation has silvered mylar on both sides with the inner side providing some rejection of radiant heat (the outer layer is against the steel and does nothing. As far as the winter goes, the closed-cell foam will keep the van slightly warmer, but more importantly, it will keep moisture from accumulating on the steel panels. Under two sleeping bags and an electric blanket, I've now been out when it was 10F and it's TOO warm. I can't imagine weather cold enough to require more insulation.
    Materials used in this video
    Push Pin Removal Tool: amzn.to/31jhywl
    Kno Knoise 80 mil Sound Deadener (you will need two for what was shown in the video, three if you do the floor too): amzn.to/36UBwP4
    Rolling Tool to make sure the sound deadener has good contact with the surface. Press down hard and roll every square inch: amzn.to/36TPelc
    Heat Reflective Closed-Cell Foam Insulation (Ez-Cool brand, one package will do it): amzn.to/2GMuDEO
    4-Way Stretch Carpet: amzn.to/31k0Z3d
    Reflectix Tape: amzn.to/2SabUbG
    3M 90 High Strength Adhesive (it's a couple bucks cheaper at Lowe's, than on Amazon): amzn.to/37WsylO

    Did you ever do a follow-up on changing tire size. If not what size rims and tires did you use? Did the new tires affect the speedometer or fuel mileage? And are you happy you did it , pluses or minuses.

    Thanks for making these videos - really interesting. I’ve watched I don’t know how many videos on van life, RV mods, getting out there, etc etc - but I enjoy your channel because the topic is usually something interesting that nobody else is talking about or going into. Hope all is well.

      I just realized I’m reading your comments in reverse, LOL. That’s a great price for a van with only 92,000 miles! The Freestar is also fairly reliable and inexpensive to repair. May she serve you well! My one piece of advice is to go on some overnights as soon as you get a bed in there. You’ll learn so much just by what you find yourself looking for (man, I wish I brought more...x) and what you thought you’d use but end up not needing. I look forward to seeing your vids and thanks for watching mine!

      I did, but it’s mostly how you see in the video. I added pieces on the walls, where it is white in this video, then topped it off with some 4-way stretch carpet. You’ll be able to see how it turned out in the next video (which will come within a couple weeks).

    Thank you! Great info. Question: It looks like you are doing a lot of work on this leased van, and I'm wondering how much of this is reversible. I'm interested in your technique because I am seriously considering buying a new NV200 and I don't want to do any damage that might make it tough to resell, in say, 5 years.

    • @OdysseyCamper
      @OdysseyCamper  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      YesClearly I understand. I’m my case I talked to the company comptroller and he said “as long as you don’t drill holes and it adds value.” So, I added the rubber sound deadener. However, if you want to make it completely reversible, you could make insulated panels out of corrugated plastic. Home Depot sells the stuff in 4x8 sheets and it’s inexpensive. It’s also what the existing black panels are made from. They can be held on with plastic trim pushpins (auto parts store) or 3M trim tape.

      @@OdysseyCamper Thanks for the tip! If I do get a new van, I'll want to follow a number of your steps to keep things reversible. :-)

      @OdysseyCamper  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stick with the Odyssey. Too much to go into here, but I think the Odyssey is, overall, a better minivan camper.

      @@OdysseyCamper Oh geez ... now I have to go look at the Odyssey and see why you like it better. What about the height inside the cargo area? Isn't it much shorter than the NV200?

    • @OdysseyCamper
      @OdysseyCamper  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      YesClearly which van you’ll prefer depends on your use case. The NV has a big unfinished box which makes it good for someone who wants to build from scratch. Without the trim panels and curved sheet metal of the Odyssey, there is more room in the cargo area of the NV. In almost any other way; build quality, comfort, handling, braking, acceleration, and highway fuel economy, the Odyssey is far superior. Of course the Odyssey is a significantly more expensive vehicle. The center height in both vehicles is 48”, but the Odyssey floor is on a slope and the ceiling curves down toward the outer edge. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

    • @YesClearly
      @YesClearly 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OdysseyCamper I test drove a new NV200 today and ... ... it's such a disappointment. It'd be fine if it were selling for maybe $15k. It's basically a tin can on wheels and didn't seem well made for the price. However, it's still more affordable than its main competitor small van, the Ford Transit Connect. And it's cargo height is actually 53" which beats any minivan I've seen. I so wanted to love this machine; now I have doubts. The salesman said it's mainly for commercial use ... as a way of waving off my concerns. Maybe companies aren't so concerned about price / quality. I wonder if they get a BIG discount for buying several of the vehicles at the same time.

      Kathryn Arnold it could, but I currently don’t run it that way. I have other businesses and don’t want additional paperwork. But certainly that and even the travel expenses are potential write offs. Would be perfect for someone right out of school.
