Lenses operates on 5 volt max , anything less than that shall do , but must not exceed 500mA current .
Improvising on the length of reflector lense can help focus properly .
Good idea for DIY from junks.

not a burning torch like McGyver made from a DVD player, but a nice pointer. Now where did I put that DVD drive I just ripped out of a broken TV combo? Mine had a mirror and a prism between the laser and the lens.

In the old days, the people put burning, Pitch soaked rags on the end of sticks for a Torch. Oh technology..Laser Torches....Look how far we've come.
That laser diode will see a early retirement. Without a proper driver circuit it will burn out for sure. That resistor as a ballast will not cut it! Laser diodes are very touchy devices . Does not take much to destroy one.

robert wisehart yes but would burn out the diode very quickly, now had he not glued the lens in place it could be focused to the point of very slight burning.

That's what I expected also,
a strong burning laser. but sadly torch just means flashlight in many parts of the world.
@@pacovasda5955 he didn't show but you can burn matches and engrave some materials not including glass and acrylic. It won't cut thicker material, either, just paper, EVA and cardboard
