Bethesda Head of PR Needs To Rethink His Approach (Pete Hines)

  • This IS NOT about Fallout 76 or how Bethesda Game Studios have been doing recently. This is about the Video Game Publisher, Bethesda Softworks and how they've been doing at Marketing and Public Relations such as Social Media and Community Management. I'll first spend some time talking about the state of Gaming Press, which some people confuse with actual Journalism, it's origin as Enthusiast Magazines, and how that translates into the relationship Pete Hines has with the Games Press industry in the past and how he basically got blindsided by a changing online space with social pressures he I personally suspect isn't prepared to deal with in a healthy way. And Yes, Bethesda Game Studios retroactively turned him into a liar, that's great too.

I guess the most insulting part of the interview was the implication that only the l33t hardcore poop sock players wanted the features in fallout 1st. These were features that ALL players wanted and we already bought the damn game at full price. It's cruel and manipulative, pete playing the victim hurts my sensibilites as someone who played quite a bit of this and has patiently waited for it to get better. I actually started my channel with f76, trying to cover it in an optimistic light with regard to new content. I've since taken down most of those videos, it's embarrassing to admit to ever publicly supporting a game that got so greasy so quickly with the MTX and subscription.

The problem with Pete Hines, at the end of the day, is that he is simply not the right man for the job. He got the job all the way back in 1999, when Bethesda was a much smaller company and social media was in its infant stages. There are two reasons why he still has the job today: he's friendly with most of Bethesda's most senior employees, and he's one of their most senior employees himself.
But "getting rid of him would be a dick move, he's been there forever" is not a good enough reason to keep a blundering PR guy on. Not in 2020, not at a huge company with several studios, not when - as you say in the video - it's easier than ever for consumers to take their opinions straight to the company. In this new environment, and with the stakes higher than ever, Bethesda can't afford to have a 'face' like Pete Hines.

How about Emilio Paglia-whatever his name is (writer of Bethesda), (while I'm guessing ur more of a fallout fan by ur pfp) I'm more of and TES fan. Both series have been affected by him (the current writer of Bethesda). Quick example to prove my point, the TES game that is hailed the best (rich in story, lore, gameplay, rpg elements) is Morrowind, which was the last TES game not written by EP (that's what I'm calling him now). A second example is fo4 and 76. I really like Bethesda's franchises and have a lot of faith in them, but some ppl have to be changed (to be better), or replaced to move forward.

@@william_prescott_ii3277 lol a lot of people know Emil and hate him with a passion. Todd basically gave him the permission to change as much of the lore as he want to fit with the story he has in mind. His best work was the dark brotherhood questline in Oblivion which is the most celebrated questline in the entire elder scrolls series with memorable characters. That doesn't mean though that one good thing he did excludes the bad ones, oh no no no no, the writing for the games has consistently went down and became more and more shallow with Emil at the helm.

Can someone please explain to me how _anyone_ can be excited for a BGS game after the disaster that has been Fallout 76? It's the game that finally opened gamers' eyes to see Fraud Howard for the snake oil salesman that he is. Even putting that trainwreck aside, his games have been the same formula for almost 2 decades, except with each subsequent entry he seems to remove more and more depth, features, and game mechanics. I honestly do not understand how anyone could expect Starfield and TES VI to be anything less than a total disaster.

So this bugs me: "Not interested in how "realistic" things are in an alternate universe with talking mutants and ghouls" because for one INTERNAL CONSISTENCY of a world is not the "realism" he is talking about, but it was what the fans were talking about. Internal Consistency/Realism is one of the most important if not the most important thing to any story regardless of how high or low fantasy/sci-fi it is. Because otherwise the story is nonsense. You can't have lore say "This is how X is done/works" then randomly, for no reason, have it done/work differently.
This isn't an argument about realism, this is an argument about someone just being bad at writing or not caring. And he certainly gave off an image of not caring. Not to mention it's a stupid argument that's often used by people who severely misunderstand what internal consistency/realism is.

Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, in theory, were giving the majority of fans what they wanted. The most popular mods for New Vegas and 3 were follower and settlement/campfire systems. Fallout 4 sold more and was well received by the majority of its players. Fallout 4 was superior for me compared to New Vegas and 3 - it simply had the gameplay features I'd been wanting like the settlement system and recruitment system. I acknowledge that many people did not like 4 as much and that's fair.
Fallout 76 was pitched as "we heard you - you don't want us to hold your hand with limited dialog choices, etc., now create your own adventure." However, fans don't want freedom - they actually want a well scripted, branching storyline, with meaningful choices, i.e. not a procedurally generated or evolving world.
I think Fallout players, more than anything, want to feel important to the narrative and just a sandbox full of human players and procedural generation can't provide that narrative. I believe New Vegas was the most acclaimed among hardcore fans because, more so than 3 or 4, the main character was a blank slate and players could more fully immerse themselves and earn the admiration and fear of NPCs which satisfied players egos more fully. It's not a bad thing to want the ego stimulated - and with online games propensity towards ganking, griefing, etc., I just don't think players can craft meaningful narratives in Fallout 76. I suspect many Fallout players don't like MMOs because one player can't really make a meaningful impact on the story.

Honestly I could clearly see that 76 was trash from the moment it was shown. I really don't understand how so many people were disappointed. Its Pete's job to tell you the game is great and its your job to look past the guy who only exists to get you excited about the product.

I noticed that Pete Hines is now the favorable boogeyman of Bethesda to the fanbase. As if he's responsible for all the bad decisions made by Bethesda and Todd Howard is this kind hearted gamer person who wants to make another Morrowind (lol). Not to defend his actions, since he's dead wrong in them especially his twitter activity to the fanbase, but for the average gamer out there with a hateboner for the guy; remember, his actions are part of the problem, not the cause of it.

"lying is completely different from changing your mind later". No that's just not true. He clearly expressed that he was communicating the plan as revealed to him. What he was basically saying that he was wrong or he was lied to by the company. I mean that doesn't make a difference in that it he is bad at pr, but that doesn't make it ok to make a false claim that relates to somebodies character.

Reminds me of watching Zaric on stream, and people ask about his work:
"Fuck you, I'm not telling you about my work"
While the topic was more on Work/Home (With Pete), this feels like a natural evolution of the logic behind Zaric's advice.
Simply creating a separation between somewhat.... chaotic forces in your life, is always smart.

bethesda has shown absolutely no ability to conduct themselves as a company.
as much as i loved the first 3 elder scrolls games, i plan on never buying another bethesda developed product ever again. the folks on the doom team are putting in incredible work, but that is a seperate entity to the one that has proven itself to be incapable of either quality or trustworthiness. i hope that they prove me wrong, however i will put no emotional stock or attention on this garbage fire of a situation, they are in the same boat as Blizzard and Bioware is slowly joining in. There are numerous indie developers and a handful of AAA developers putting out quality products, those are where I, and anyone with sense, will spend our time money and attention.

Whenever you see fail in an organization that never goes away, it's either nepotism or cronyism. Lot of that these days. Lots of fail too. Funny thing.

This "lack of awareness" is at coronavirus levels (read:pandemic) among video game company employees. There are countless instances of staff talking down (at best) and outright vilifying (at worst) their own fan base. Often it is over political differences, where it seems almost invariably the vitriol originates from an employee with left-leaning views, for some reason. How anyone can think their own personal twitter is someone an island that doesn't represent the company is beyond me. It's almost like they've existed in an echo chamber...

Saying that "game journalists are actually 'enthusiasts' and thus holding them to journalistic standards is wrong" entirely misses the point. First of all, "real" journalists have lowered the bar so much that considering them to be above the "enthusiast press" is laughable. Second, the idea that holding supposedly lesser organizations accountable for their actions is in any way a bad thing is simply nonsense. It doesn't matter what we call them or what category they fit, if they do something wrong they should be held accountable. It's literally that simple. I don't even like Gamergate, I thought the whole situation was stupid, but this was such a bad take I had to say something.

26:09 "when you become known for something then people will continually want you to keep doing the thing you're known for". true, but comparing random youtuber (who are people dependent on google corporation, even more so, if their area of content is dependent on content that is being delivered by other corporations) with a large company (part of corporation) is a massive stretch. remember that short story you told us about "a nintendo" situation and american laws in one of your older videos (sorry, i wouldn't be able to find it)? well, those laws are not accidental at all. addictions aside, people naturally get used to things, they form habits, customs and communities around various phenomenons. the thing is that once such situation develops, it can't be "it's just business" any more, it becomes good/bad governing question. what we are witnessing here is how things are turning out to be as they should for a company which no longer has connection with their brand(s). in this situation good public relationships can only mean more and sweeter lies. most likely too much people have changed in that company for anything to be true. yet, you have made a nice explanatory video. i would pick such approach over unsubstantiated pressure over twitter any time.

@@Zhakaron Actually that's the most messed up thing about the games industry in general.
It's akin to people making promises at a tech expo about the future of their products while offering pre-orders on a physical product that isn't even nearly finalised yet.
This gets especially insidious when you consider games like No Mans Sky where they showed off material that was presented as if it was a finished product that ultimately turned out to be completely fabricated.
