I have an inkling there are a lot of mean, cold-blooded "professionals" at Bethesda who doesn't give a fuck about Lore. If Zaric would suggest there creative ideas, these people just wouldn't listen to him.
Bethesda are not interested in actually making the lore correct or the game interesting to devout gamers of the series. They are more interested in just hyping another game up with false promises and trying to pretend the graphics are amazing and just hiring a good marketing team. The Elder Scrolls games have become less and less complex as the years go by, eventually you will have one that fully holds your hand the entire way through and is simple enough that a 5 year old can finish it. Eventually they will probably try to permanently morph it into just a series of MMO games to make more money and have monthly subscriptions etc.

Todd is doing fine with High Charisma Mercantile skills(Speech in Skyrim terms), he needs to replace Emil Pagliuro, he is responsible for the mediocre writing of the main quests, and is only involved in too few decent side quests, but certainly not fit for a whole game story
Instead of the Daedroth killing the emperor, I'd have a giant hand come out of the gate and drag him into oblivion. It'll give you a first hand experience with Mehrunes Dagon as well as suggest that the emperor can be saved. He doesn't actually have to survive, but it'd be pretty cool to find out he put up one hell of a fight and only died just as you yourself enter Oblivion.

The Assassins Citadel exactly one of my complaints , the other being that the war never really felt like it was happening , never saw a fight other than the scripted quest ones , one of the reasons I always use the warzones mod , I can't imagine a war that happens just like 5 battles and then ends.

In interviews Todd Howard says they always start developing from the map, the setting, and then they come up with stories to fill the place. So their focus is clearly not the narrative, which is a shame, since (specially nowadays) they are huge and have the budget to hit all the boxes.
Worst part is that it was cut to make disc space for consoles. People throw shade on that statement and call it a rumor, but everyone's favorite Emil Pagliarulo directly talks about it in an interview, that the voice lines for the quest took up too much space so they needed to trim the content down. Worse than that? They still left a ton of unused files in the game, so the disk space they saved by cutting the arena was wasted anyway.
@@KonoGufo I hear the same thing happened with _Fallout: New Vegas,_ where a vital companion was cut due to his voice lines taking up so much space. Instead of making him a free update or part of a DLC, they rewrote and reworked him into the antagonist of _Lonesome Road,_ Ulysses. The Fallout Wiki backs that up with sources.

Zaric Zhakaron I loved Oblivion, it's a classic. I wish the map was scaled a little bigger, and some minor improvements to the combat, graphics and main story. I also agree about the Arena. I actually really enjoyed the Arena in Oblivion, but it should have been bigger, and had different kinds of matches (rather than just yellow team vs blue team) imagine if they had obstacles, traps, and chariots involved in some of the matches.
I think they should've gone Gothic route. Smaller scale, but also much more believable and paced. I mean I'm ok with not having 1:1 ratio, but I just can't help myself cringing when the capital of the entire continent has like what 40-50 people in it?

You guys have no idea how horrible the German translation of Oblivion was. It was seriously the worst AAA game localisation I have ever seen - for instance, the bandits' "Show me what you've got!" was translated word for word. Yes. Every bandit asked you what you were holding while fighting you. Other great thing I can remember from the top of my head: - Mara's Gift became... Mara's Gift. Sadly, the German word Gift means Poison. - The first healing spell was named "Feuerball". - The weak healing potion was called, and I kid you not, "Schwacher Trank der Lebensenergie Wiederherstellung", but because that didn't fit in the little space they had in-game, in your inventory it had the amazing name "Schw. Tr. d. Le.-en. W." - The Arcane University became, if translated directly back into English, "The Secret University", eventhough everybody in the game talked about it. There were a lot of other great examples, but luckily I suppressed most of them and rather just play the game in English nowadays. Or, even better, just play Morrowind.
Well, the spanish translation was at the same level, more or less. For example, one of the innkeepers (the expensive ones) from Cheyndinhal, was written something diferent than the original, and only if you have some english level, can undestand the prices that it's not said at the translation. Also, words not so well written, or phrases that they don't have any sense in spanish. In Cheindinhal, also, one of the fighter guildmenbers tell you about where you can join, but the translation was completly diferent. Yes, the spanish translation was a disaster.
You can thank Emil Pagliarulo for the collapse in writing quality from Bethesda after Oblivion. The man is alright when dealing with lower quest lines (though he should still be made to respect and work within previously established lore), but he should be kept far away from being lead writer.

TH-cam recommended vids did something right for a change) This is the best narrative and presentation involving elder scrolls I've seen in a while.. ever even! It's clearly from a person with a great love for the franchise and an obvious Daggerfall fan! I specially like how you stuck to your own format and went at the topic step by step. Good work!
Not exactly, Oblivion with Mods ends up being a better game that Skyrim with mods. Mostly because the base RPG mechanics are better and the game has better quests.
+James O'Morain I have 700 hours into Skyrim, and recently started playing oblivion. I have to say that I immersed myself into Oblivion immediately, and my sense of exploration and adventure didn't fade after 7 hours like it did with Skyrim. People bash the games slow levelling, but imho that's maybe better for immersion. I had to accept that I couldnt powerlevel through the game like I did in Skyrim (it is a grindfest for boring statboost perks, don't bs me) and once I did that I just felt this immense sense of freedom. I just set out in the world for new quests and experiences, instead of looking at quests as 5 skill levelups and a new shout.
This was amazing, I've made some decently detailed alternate stories up for Oblivion and Skyrim, but this jazz blows my stuff out of the water. I'm definitely subscribing, I loved this video and I can't wait to watch your alternate Skyrim story.
I like the whole newly written beginning but I would add it as another part of the story that comes later. I would start the game as a prisoner who is rescued by the Legion, you can choose to help or stay behind and either way you are told to report to some battelmage or legion commander to report what has been going on, you are then given a series of tasks that leads to talking to Captain Renault and then a failed mission to protect prince Ebel (Uriel's son), you report back and are told that they have reports that the other children of the emperor have been killed too in different places, you then go through the segment with altered dialogue minus the whole "See more than lesser men" and everything continues the same as Zaric says. This guy is what the game industry needs.
Andrew Markus Thats what you think because youre probably young and played skyrim first. Only original gameplay element that wasnt dumped down was fighting dragons and that gets boring after the first 2. Also the main quest line of skyrim was atrocious, nothing beats the Mythic Dawn quests in Oblivion. Plus dont get me started on the magic system.
I am still in the process of watching the video, just finished first part. And truth be told, I love it. After the finals are over, depending on my mood and other things to do, I'll try to implement some of these in mods myself. (But don't get your hopes up, I tend not to finish my projects :P).
Zaric, I had a blast listening to this. It would have made the story EPIC if that was done. The imperial city would feel much more like the mega metropolis it should have been. I hated that their were only a few factions in oblivion, cyrodiil should have hundreds of factions, a couple dozen of those you should be able to join.
I think the imperial city should've been much more better since it's the capital and I mean the best house the most expensive equipment the most security archers and mages on towers You actually see ships coming in and people carrying supplies off the ships Some people actually handing money to the poor Thieves from the thieves guild on roofs and following there target and you get to witness them pickpocket there target And more
Enclave soldier yeah man. You should really see the people working, having friends and all that. What really annoys me is that the number of NPCs is so small! I can see that you cant make 2000 NPCs, but they could have made much more, just for the feeling.
Actually, TES is pretty low fantasy. Also, Cyrodiil needs a LOT more culture and variance. They needed to bring back the Roman theme, and maybe play it up a bit with tunics for the townsfolk, and the countryside needs to be filled with misty plains and gentle rolling hills, throw it a marshland or jungle or two. Make it look like Cyrodiil, rather than England.
Okay what if the guard protecting Septim making a human wall were part of the mythic dawn all along and then at the end they kill the emperor julius caesar style
Many years ago I had a buddy at work who played Oblivion and during a night shift we talked for 6 hours strait on how to make the game better. It was a good talk. So was this.
It's not just time to develop... it's also hardware limitations... Oblivion was released for systems with 0.5 GB of ram... since no one in 2023 has a computer with less than 6gb of ram. try moding the game to your desired immersion and difficulty with added NPCs and see how far you get if you don't use a 4GB patch... just the 2 gb limit... I tried it... you won't get far.
I really like this concept of "all the rest of the games lead up to this." They tried to do this, but only through incredibly vague allusions. I know that continuity isn't really Bethesda's thing, but considering that Oblivion should have been the best game in the series, they could have tried a lot better with the plot.
I got it, gimme combat from Warband, open world aspects of TES, throw in a good story, great factions/sidequests and I think we got a game boys and girls.
Well that would have been amazing game. But what about Shivering Isles? Oh, I know. This addon can be as Bloodmoon was for Morrowind. Something like vacation trip from all oblivion (general) stuff. (And it really was something like that, I think)
I think you should still be able to become a knight of Kvatch even if you let the Count die. You'll need to have a high speech skill, but you could essentially say that you've proved yourself when you put the good people of Kvatch over the prospect of personal gain and self benefit.

Bethesda's games have been getting more and more simplified since Fallout 3, but I didn't expect them to reach as low a point as Fallout 4 ended up. They need to shape up
the story of skyrim was cool , but the mechanics and interaction in skyrim are a lackluster. i mean, your character in skyrim can level everything leaving him without a specific class. a warrior casting illusion spells doesnt feel fun to me and lacks personality i guess

And I did not enjoy it a tad, but I am being objective here, don't let nostalgia get you, Fallout 3 was a game I enjoyed more so we naturally expected 4 to be better, it was, just not in the dimension we were hoping it to be, but 4 is superior in every way my dude.

(they're still not that great though) It has a fun settlement building system. (that's unfortunately not nearly expansive enough, nor do the settlers give you enough credit) It has improved graphics. (that are still years behind other AAA game graphics for some reason) That's it, that are all the improvements Fallout 4 has over Fallout 3. Now lets look at the parts that were made worse for Fallout 4. The writing. (not that F3 was all that great but somehow they managed to get worse at it.) The RPG mechanics. (as in there were none.) The RP possibilities. (again there were none, this ties into the writing though.) The speech system. (oversimplified, you had no real choices.) The lore. (they broke established lore so much more often in F4.) so to recap they improved superficial things and dumbed everything else down, i wouldn't call that a superior product.
I havent finished the video yet but i have one complaint already: the beginning of the game seems WAY too long. Dont get me wrong, its well written and you have some amazing ideas but this part would get really annoying when creating your 3rd, 4th,... characters and youd have to play this part over and over again. When i play an elder scrolls game, i want to see the open world as soon as possible and this beginning would ruin the experience a little bit for me.
At some points in the video, it turned from an idealized Oblivion into an elder scrolls movie! Very thought out and very detailed! Keep up the good work!

My god that was magnificent. I've Lost all count of the hours I spent on vanilla and modded Oblivion, but if the game was as you described I think I'd have spent many more!
These things mentioned in this video would make for an improved game, however it would make for an impossible game. Specifically I mean in regards to the description of the improved Imperial City, well, that would be much too large to make in a game and if several sections were cut off from you, then the game would feel more like the Witcher series, making it more linear (not that I think the Witcher is bad at all). Another part would be when Uriel puts his hand through the fake wall, while possible now, it would not have been convincing 10 years ago.

Good thoughts, although I really only think it makes sense for the player to become leader of the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves' Guild, since those guilds are more decentralized, less formal, and have leaders which fulfill more a symbolic and ceremonial role than an administrative or political one. But completing the Mages Guild quest line and becoming the Archmage of the Guild is sort of like if completing the main quest in Oblivion caused you to be crowned Emperor. The other guilds can still come to your aid if you complete their respective quest lines, and the player would still achieve a high rank, along with perhaps some sort of special role or honorific that's reflect of the PC's role as a highly competent fixer an exemplar.

Oh man .. that would have been amazing. Forget Game of the Year - it could have been Game of All Time. I remember when playing Oblivion thinking it was a ballsy move on their part to have the player character NOT be the "chosen one" but a sidekick instead. BUT .. a sidekick gets to travel with the hero & have adventures together, so really you're just an errand boy. Martin's sacrifice is emotionally meaningless because he's not developed as a character; you never get to know him. Your version is more interesting, fascinatingly complex, and it sounds like the payoff would have been emotionally satisfying as well. I almost worked at Bethesda back in the 2000s. They approached me to be a loremaster (presumably for ESO which at that time was little more than a twinkle in Todd's eye) but I didn't want to move to the DC metro area so I chickened out. In retrospect, it was probably for the best but sometimes I wonder if I should have done it...
This video is so underrated, because it's what you'd truly call: ''constructive criticism''. You praised the game with regards to those aspects/areas that needed praising and offered some brilliant suggestions as to what could be done better - all the while keeping it LORE-based, mind you. You should work for Bethesda, man!
I'd really change up the magic system. There's only like, 10 spell effects in the entire game. I'd gladly give up spellcrafting if it meant having unique spells that never lost their usefulness, a la Apocalypse Magic in skyrim. But if we're going to keep the spellcrafting system, negative effects placed on yourself should defer the cost, not at to it. Same with enchanting.
Oblivion is fucking great. The best game I've ever played. My first game that in which I have spent more than 1000 Hours of gameplay. Not even joking! And currently I'm stil playing it thanks to +PredCaliber 's tutorial on how to mod it.
You know what? It's time to put together a fan made elder scrolls game. We have the modding community, we have the tech. All that's needed is a coordinated team and the will to make it.
How to improve Oblivion: 1) Fly Spell 2) Creatures don't level with you 3) No random loot (or at least make the random loot interesting) 4) No arrows to tell you where to go 5) Please let me take part in the final battle 6) Let me exploit the game mechanics and kill demigods 7) What's so good about Cyrodriil anyway? Change the map to Morrowind! 8) Did I say Morrowind? Limit it to Vvardenfell 9) Those diary and dialogue systems are too good, make them worse 10) Call the game Morrowind Perfect!
But what if you become Sheogorath before the fight with Dagon, it would be awesome if you can sumon 2 armies made up of Golden Saints and Dark Seducers (aptly named...the Mad ending.)

In interviews Todd Howard says they always start developing from the map, the setting, and then they come up with stories to fill the place. So their focus is clearly not the narrative, which is a shame, since (specially nowadays) they are huge and have the budget to hit all the boxes.
The Arena was actually unfinished in Oblivion. You were originally going to be able to pick your team and there would be an arena in every city.

Worst part is that it was cut to make disc space for consoles. People throw shade on that statement and call it a rumor, but everyone's favorite Emil Pagliarulo directly talks about it in an interview, that the voice lines for the quest took up too much space so they needed to trim the content down. Worse than that? They still left a ton of unused files in the game, so the disk space they saved by cutting the arena was wasted anyway.

Zaric Zhakaron I loved Oblivion, it's a classic. I wish the map was scaled a little bigger, and some minor improvements to the combat, graphics and main story. I also agree about the Arena. I actually really enjoyed the Arena in Oblivion, but it should have been bigger, and had different kinds of matches (rather than just yellow team vs blue team) imagine if they had obstacles, traps, and chariots involved in some of the matches.
I think they should've gone Gothic route. Smaller scale, but also much more believable and paced. I mean I'm ok with not having 1:1 ratio, but I just can't help myself cringing when the capital of the entire continent has like what 40-50 people in it?

You guys have no idea how horrible the German translation of Oblivion was. It was seriously the worst AAA game localisation I have ever seen - for instance, the bandits' "Show me what you've got!" was translated word for word. Yes. Every bandit asked you what you were holding while fighting you. Other great thing I can remember from the top of my head:
- Mara's Gift became... Mara's Gift. Sadly, the German word Gift means Poison.
- The first healing spell was named "Feuerball".
- The weak healing potion was called, and I kid you not, "Schwacher Trank der Lebensenergie Wiederherstellung", but because that didn't fit in the little space they had in-game, in your inventory it had the amazing name "Schw. Tr. d. Le.-en. W."
- The Arcane University became, if translated directly back into English, "The Secret University", eventhough everybody in the game talked about it.
There were a lot of other great examples, but luckily I suppressed most of them and rather just play the game in English nowadays. Or, even better, just play Morrowind.
Well, the spanish translation was at the same level, more or less. For example, one of the innkeepers (the expensive ones) from Cheyndinhal, was written something diferent than the original, and only if you have some english level, can undestand the prices that it's not said at the translation.
Also, words not so well written, or phrases that they don't have any sense in spanish. In Cheindinhal, also, one of the fighter guildmenbers tell you about where you can join, but the translation was completly diferent.

You can thank Emil Pagliarulo for the collapse in writing quality from Bethesda after Oblivion. The man is alright when dealing with lower quest lines (though he should still be made to respect and work within previously established lore), but he should be kept far away from being lead writer.

Not exactly, Oblivion with Mods ends up being a better game that Skyrim with mods. Mostly because the base RPG mechanics are better and the game has better quests.
+James O'Morain I have 700 hours into Skyrim, and recently started playing oblivion. I have to say that I immersed myself into Oblivion immediately, and my sense of exploration and adventure didn't fade after 7 hours like it did with Skyrim. People bash the games slow levelling, but imho that's maybe better for immersion. I had to accept that I couldnt powerlevel through the game like I did in Skyrim (it is a grindfest for boring statboost perks, don't bs me) and once I did that I just felt this immense sense of freedom. I just set out in the world for new quests and experiences, instead of looking at quests as 5 skill levelups and a new shout.

I like the whole newly written beginning but I would add it as another part of the story that comes later.
I would start the game as a prisoner who is rescued by the Legion, you can choose to help or stay behind and either way you are told to report to some battelmage or legion commander to report what has been going on, you are then given a series of tasks that leads to talking to Captain Renault and then a failed mission to protect prince Ebel (Uriel's son), you report back and are told that they have reports that the other children of the emperor have been killed too in different places, you then go through the segment with altered dialogue minus the whole "See more than lesser men" and everything continues the same as Zaric says.
This guy is what the game industry needs.

Only original gameplay element that wasnt dumped down was fighting dragons and that gets boring after the first 2. Also the main quest line of skyrim was atrocious, nothing beats the Mythic Dawn quests in Oblivion. Plus dont get me started on the magic system.

Zaric, I had a blast listening to this. It would have made the story EPIC if that was done. The imperial city would feel much more like the mega metropolis it should have been. I hated that their were only a few factions in oblivion, cyrodiil should have hundreds of factions, a couple dozen of those you should be able to join.

Actually, TES is pretty low fantasy. Also, Cyrodiil needs a LOT more culture and variance. They needed to bring back the Roman theme, and maybe play it up a bit with tunics for the townsfolk, and the countryside needs to be filled with misty plains and gentle rolling hills, throw it a marshland or jungle or two. Make it look like Cyrodiil, rather than England.

It's not just time to develop... it's also hardware limitations... Oblivion was released for systems with 0.5 GB of ram... since no one in 2023 has a computer with less than 6gb of ram. try moding the game to your desired immersion and difficulty with added NPCs and see how far you get if you don't use a 4GB patch... just the 2 gb limit... I tried it... you won't get far.
I really like this concept of "all the rest of the games lead up to this." They tried to do this, but only through incredibly vague allusions. I know that continuity isn't really Bethesda's thing, but considering that Oblivion should have been the best game in the series, they could have tried a lot better with the plot.

I think you should still be able to become a knight of Kvatch even if you let the Count die. You'll need to have a high speech skill, but you could essentially say that you've proved yourself when you put the good people of Kvatch over the prospect of personal gain and self benefit.

Bethesda's games have been getting more and more simplified since Fallout 3, but I didn't expect them to reach as low a point as Fallout 4 ended up. They need to shape up
the story of skyrim was cool , but the mechanics and interaction in skyrim are a lackluster. i mean, your character in skyrim can level everything leaving him without a specific class. a warrior casting illusion spells doesnt feel fun to me and lacks personality i guess
Fallout 4 is superior in every way to 3. And I did not enjoy it a tad, but I am being objective here, don't let nostalgia get you, Fallout 3 was a game I enjoyed more so we naturally expected 4 to be better, it was, just not in the dimension we were hoping it to be, but 4 is superior in every way my dude.

It has a fun settlement building system. (that's unfortunately not nearly expansive enough, nor do the settlers give you enough credit)
It has improved graphics. (that are still years behind other AAA game graphics for some reason)
That's it, that are all the improvements Fallout 4 has over Fallout 3.
Now lets look at the parts that were made worse for Fallout 4.
The writing. (not that F3 was all that great but somehow they managed to get worse at it.)
The RPG mechanics. (as in there were none.)
The RP possibilities. (again there were none, this ties into the writing though.)
The speech system. (oversimplified, you had no real choices.)
The lore. (they broke established lore so much more often in F4.)
so to recap they improved superficial things and dumbed everything else down, i wouldn't call that a superior product.

I havent finished the video yet but i have one complaint already: the beginning of the game seems WAY too long. Dont get me wrong, its well written and you have some amazing ideas but this part would get really annoying when creating your 3rd, 4th,... characters and youd have to play this part over and over again. When i play an elder scrolls game, i want to see the open world as soon as possible and this beginning would ruin the experience a little bit for me.
At some points in the video, it turned from an idealized Oblivion into an elder scrolls movie! Very thought out and very detailed! Keep up the good work!

My god that was magnificent. I've Lost all count of the hours I spent on vanilla and modded Oblivion, but if the game was as you described I think I'd have spent many more!
These things mentioned in this video would make for an improved game, however it would make for an impossible game. Specifically I mean in regards to the description of the improved Imperial City, well, that would be much too large to make in a game and if several sections were cut off from you, then the game would feel more like the Witcher series, making it more linear (not that I think the Witcher is bad at all). Another part would be when Uriel puts his hand through the fake wall, while possible now, it would not have been convincing 10 years ago.

Good thoughts, although I really only think it makes sense for the player to become leader of the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves' Guild, since those guilds are more decentralized, less formal, and have leaders which fulfill more a symbolic and ceremonial role than an administrative or political one. But completing the Mages Guild quest line and becoming the Archmage of the Guild is sort of like if completing the main quest in Oblivion caused you to be crowned Emperor.
The other guilds can still come to your aid if you complete their respective quest lines, and the player would still achieve a high rank, along with perhaps some sort of special role or honorific that's reflect of the PC's role as a highly competent fixer an exemplar.

Oh man .. that would have been amazing. Forget Game of the Year - it could have been Game of All Time. I remember when playing Oblivion thinking it was a ballsy move on their part to have the player character NOT be the "chosen one" but a sidekick instead. BUT .. a sidekick gets to travel with the hero & have adventures together, so really you're just an errand boy. Martin's sacrifice is emotionally meaningless because he's not developed as a character; you never get to know him. Your version is more interesting, fascinatingly complex, and it sounds like the payoff would have been emotionally satisfying as well.
I almost worked at Bethesda back in the 2000s. They approached me to be a loremaster (presumably for ESO which at that time was little more than a twinkle in Todd's eye) but I didn't want to move to the DC metro area so I chickened out. In retrospect, it was probably for the best but sometimes I wonder if I should have done it...

I'd really change up the magic system. There's only like, 10 spell effects in the entire game. I'd gladly give up spellcrafting if it meant having unique spells that never lost their usefulness, a la Apocalypse Magic in skyrim.
But if we're going to keep the spellcrafting system, negative effects placed on yourself should defer the cost, not at to it. Same with enchanting.
Oblivion is fucking great. The best game I've ever played. My first game that in which I have spent more than 1000 Hours of gameplay. Not even joking! And currently I'm stil playing it thanks to +PredCaliber 's tutorial on how to mod it.
You know what? It's time to put together a fan made elder scrolls game. We have the modding community, we have the tech. All that's needed is a coordinated team and the will to make it.
How to improve Oblivion:
1) Fly Spell
2) Creatures don't level with you
3) No random loot (or at least make the random loot interesting)
4) No arrows to tell you where to go
5) Please let me take part in the final battle
6) Let me exploit the game mechanics and kill demigods
7) What's so good about Cyrodriil anyway? Change the map to Morrowind!
8) Did I say Morrowind? Limit it to Vvardenfell
9) Those diary and dialogue systems are too good, make them worse
10) Call the game Morrowind

It would be interesting if in the next one, the npcs reacted how you look. If you create a strange looking character, they will say you look strange
