    Tacca integrifolia is more commonly know as the White Bat plant and I am feeling pretty chuffed that I have managed to not only keep mine alive but flower it twice!
    But getting down to tin tacks, I really struggle to see a resemblance between bats and bat plants other than the lovely large petals.
    As a sub tropical plant we are well suited to its growth but I think I'll stick to the real deal and focus my efforts on our spectacular flying-foxes.

    Thank you for that and the beauty of your climate. i am here in Newfoundland and Labrador Canada and we are still having freezing temps at night. When I go out for my walk in the evening I still have to wear my winter coat and put on gloves to keep my hands warm! You guys don't have that worry but then again we don't have to worry about snakes and poisonous spiders so an equal trade off I think lol.

    Stick a 'nana in its "mouth" and we’ll see if we all laugh ourselves stupid…that’s the bat test!!!
    There’s a lot of litigiously unbatlike things in nature that are called 'bat…' like the multiple creatures called 'batfish'…just as well our beautiful sky puppies haven’t quite worked out the legal system or science hippies the world over would be effed.
    Thank you for all you do and for showing us that extraordinary plant and extraordinary Ebony…gorgeous❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿❤️

    Tacca chantrieri. Very exotic. I got one in Florida, USA, in 1980. Took it home to Maryland, and it puttered along indoors for a year or two. Then it had to go outside during a heat wave, though in shade. Well, it tripled in size. It had to find a new home at an aquarium. They are still rare.

    My two favourite things! Well bat things anyway. Great to see it blooming for a second time this season, I reckon the humidity that rolled in in March told it to have another go. Ebony just seems perplexed as to what is bat-like about this flower too!

  • @christinae30

    When you tell it I can understand why it's called bat flower, but they are not that alike. But pretty flower, and interesting to see when living far away (Sweden).

  • @cloverhighfive
    @cloverhighfive ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As I'm watching it again (goshdarn is it cute when Ebody pops in the corner), I'm thinking, maybe the petals/flowers part symbolize the body of the bat, and the long whippy things remind people of the bones in the bat's wings, so it's body in the middle, and "wings" on the side?

  • @Marshwife
    @Marshwife ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Their eyes, they’re so cute.. show a bit of mischief, curiosity, sweetness… they’re very expressive… never thought I’d say that about a bat but you’ve showed me not only how beneficial they are, delicate, but also so cute..!
    I had the privilege of living with a few in my basement last winter. I don’t know how they got in, but they needed the shelter from Minnesota winter. The only time I saw them was while doing laundry…if I flapped a shirt in the air they’d come out. Or if they “saw” a spider.. thankfully I rarely saw spiders last winter, as I’m sure they kept those bats alive. And I HATE spiders.. so those little bats did me a great favor. Hope they found their way out in the spring…

    I've never heard of these flowers before! Black-flowering and night-blooming plants fascinate me because they're so uncommon, but sadly, I have NO skill for cultivating them. (Half the time, I even manage to kill the plastic ones!😖) Is the "bat flower" something actual bats might seek nectar from...? I know they're mad for corymbias...
