Flying fox colonies are under pressure in Australia due to loss of habitat, a negative public perception and extreme heat events that have wiped out entire colonies. The Australian Bat Clinic and many other wildlife groups in eastern Australia are currently inundated with baby bats that have been rescued following the latest tragedy which saw thousands of bats lose their lives due to the heat.
When a bat mother dies, often their young are still attached and will not survive without the right care. Bat carers play a vital role in not only retrieving suffering bats, but rehabilitating them until they can be released back into the wild.
When baby bats first enter rehabilitation it can be traumatising for them as they have just been separated from their mothers to which they have formed strong bonds. Bat carers have to ensure that the baby bats not only are well fed, but that they are nurtured and feel safe in their temporary new home. Providing affection to the bats is a necessity.
The teats represent their mother’s nipple, and this makes them feel more comfortable, as does the security of the blankets which they are often snugly wrapped in.
The bats will remain at the Australian Bat Clinic until they are old enough to be released.

All baby mammals can actually, it's ingrained in the dna.
Before the early evolution of hominids most of our early mammalian ancestors which where more akin to modern rodents during the early Jurrasic period would have found comfort on teething on their mother's nipples in their younger years; so it makes sense that many evolutions later that such an instinctual response would still be present in many mammalian species in the modern era.

I hand raised my cat and she had a "binkie" too. It was a rubber nipple off at kitten milk bottle.

It warms my heart to see such adorable animals treated well. No forcefulness, just warmth and real care. And you can see in their eyes the feeling of comfort, both in being cleaned and swaddled, and in being laid down next to their fellow baby bats. You can really get the sense that they're there for eachother just as much as the caregiver is. It really is beautiful. :)

What gets me is the way they grab her hands with their little tiny grippers. Like "no I wanna snuggle, this mine now" You can tell they love their caretaker.
That's a natural instinct - to grab on with their mouths & hold on to mom's nipple (no nerves in there so it's not painful for mom) as well as grabbing & holding with their feet so they feel anchored when mom's flying & other stuff.
Their claws have tiny barbs on them so they stick to everything like velcro & feel safe.
They get panicky when they don't have something in their mouths or something to cling to with their feet. And mom wraps them in her wings for warmth & safety too.@@Hollowolfjas4014

It’s tactile and proprioceptive feedback. Powerful stuff, and it helps the developing nervous system with sensory processing and integration. You’re right, all mammals. Probably all vertebrates. But when you think about it... most especially with bats. After all, the mothers already have the equipment built into them. No need for blankets or swaddling clothes!

I studied in a school with trees full of bats and sometimes you'd find a baby bat injured under a tree. We'd rescue them at our school and raise them. They're some of the most adorable creatures and so misunderstood simply because of how they've been depicted in Hollywood. Much like Hyenas.

They have their own little pacifiers like a baby! So cute!!
That is because baby bats hold on to moms nipple when she is flying and that make them feel safe. Without the dummy as they call it they get clingy because they are worried they will fall off. The dummy help them relax because as long as they hold on to it(the nipple) they wont fall.

You truly don't realize how beautiful these creatures are until you see them up close. They look so similar to dogs with their head, ears and eyes. They're adorable. More people should see this and get over the rumors about bats and stop being so afraid of them. I know these creatures can carry viruses, but other than that people should get over it and just be careful instead of scared.

Every symbol of evil usually has bat looking wings (or a snake either or), going back thousands of years, I know it's not the poor bats fault but it's still an association we make for some reason.
really? The claws don't look evil to me. In fact I think they look pretty cool
I think it helps to understand why they have those features. For instances, the hooks in their wings are used to grab fruit and branches. Their curved claws on their back feet make it easy for them to hang off a branch without needing to grasp it and use energy. Their wings are wide and thin to make flying easier. These are all attributes to assist survival for their particular lifestyle. They are the only mammal that have been gifted the power of flight (naturally). Quite remarkable.

I went back to see these guys the other day and they have grown so much. The little black one getting it's wings cleaned was a real eager flyer. I had to keep ducking each time it took a few circles. They can be a bit clumsy when they learn to fly, but it's entertaining to watch. I love bats.
