    Old video but super helpful none the less. I found one at my local greenhouse, dirt cheap because it was in rough shape. This had some great info for me to try and nurse it back to health!

    I got seeds of the bat flower plant, however I did not realise they grew so large. It is nice to know how impressive they can be if I eventually nail this beautiful plant. Thank you for uploading.

      Megan Cowan: I've tried to germinate bat flower seeds in the past and it didn't work. The reason is that they can take up to 12 months to germinate. So I went online and just got the live plant instead. They can take 2-3 years to flower so try to get the oldest and largest you can find. Good Luck!!

      @@vrtruebluebuddha6693 According to my experience, fresh seeds only stay viable about 2 months, germination rate is only half after 4th week, actually. You did a smart thing just get a live plant! And yes, from seed to flower will take 3 years. Grow this in a large clear plastic bag can keep the moisture easily but remember from time to time (at least every other day), open the bag for fresh air. And be ware of aphids!

    After about a year, mine produced a flower! It’s beginning to die now. I do want to try to collect its seeds and I read to let the little flowers completely dry on the stem. After that, should I cut the whole stem off?

    • @LogeesPlants
      @LogeesPlants  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We don't suggest the slow release fertilizer as it's very difficult to control how much the plant is being fed. You can leach the soil, the next time you go to water the plant, by running some water through the pot for approximately 3-5 minutes.

    I've got some tubers of this plant and have planted them in a mix of bark, orchid mix and a very small amount of good potting medium.
    As they're tubers how should i go about watering them and how long might I expect (given the right amount of humidity etc.) before I see signs of growth from the tubers?
    Any advice would be very welcome as I tried last year but overwatered the tubers and they rotted.

    • @LogeesPlants
      @LogeesPlants  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      1/3 peat moss, 1/3 pine bark, 1/3 perlite. Do not let the soil dry out completely.

    Mine is floppy at the base, like you mentioned in the video. Is there a limit as to how deep you can cover the base with more soil? Will planting it deeper cause new roots to emerge from the top part of the base? I know burying the stem will kill some types of plants, but it's great for others (like tomatoes and pumpkins). I just want to make sure I don't mess up my little Tacca.

      Try leaching the soil the next time it needs to be watered by running some water through the pot for about 3-5 minutes. This should solve the issue. What type of soil is it in? What's the brand? Is it being fed? If so, what is the NPK value on the fertilizer and how often is it being applied?

  • @crystalm4324

    I always wanted to try to grow one of these, awesome video.
    Are they tedious to grow from seed? Or are the best from a tuber/root cutting?

    • @LogeesPlants
      @LogeesPlants  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Bat Flowers can be propagated from seeds, or plant rhizomes. Seeds can take months to germinate. A heated germination mat is strongly recommended. Most people propagate them using the rhizomes or tuberous roots.Dig up rhizomes of established plants in the Fall, and divide into clumps for re-planting.

      @@LogeesPlants everything is miracle grow. They are about 4 inches tall. Just got them yesterday

    • @LogeesPlants
      @LogeesPlants  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That might be the issue. Miracle grow soils tend to contain high levels of slow release fertilizers which can be harmful to these tropical plants. We generally suggest using a well-draining soil which is free from any sort of fertilizers. You can try leaching the soil, the next time you go to water the plant, by running some water through the pot for approximately 3-5 minutes. This should flush any of the excess fertilizer from the mix.
