  • Choosing an Amok Hammock - The new Draumr 5.0, Ultralight Collection, and Skjold 10 tarp, and with the Fjol pad, and traditional gathered end Segl hammock
    Full disclosure: Erin and I are partnered with Amok, but they didn't ask me to make this video or even suggest it, I'm not paid to do it, and everything said here is my own opinion.

    I am in the process of ordering mine now! Thank you for this review. Your canoe trip vids are the reason I became interested in these and then speaking with a couple people I know who absolutely swear by the comfort of a hammock compared to a tent sleep has made my decision to switch a very easy one. I also want to note how happily surprised I was that Amok's website has prices that include all duties and taxes for international orders! And the shipping is remarkably cheap! I am beyond excited for my first night of transforming into what I am sure will be the most comfy and cozy bear burrito in all of Northern Saskatchewan! :)

    I've had Draumrs for about 3 years now. Just got a 5.0 this year. Fantastic for side sleepers and I wake up refreshed rather than sore and achy like I did in a tent. I'm a canoe camper so I never considered an ultralight, but I just found out from your Temagami video that you can see RIGHT THROUGH THE SIDES. That is seriously cool! I don't know why they don't promote that more. On their website, the ultralight is against a white backdrop, so I had no idea that the material was semi-transparent. Less claustrophobic and easier to see the lions, tigers and bears if you need to!

      Bon, can i sugest that you take magnesium chloride? You can get it in any drug store. Boil one liter of water, let it set until cold, pour in a glass container, pour one table spoon of chloride. Drink half of cup at night time, or in the morning and in less than two weeks you'll be new. I advise you its very bitter, it tastes awful, but you'll get used to it. And may Yahuah Eloheinu be with you.

      Thanks a lot William :) All I can really say is that in the regular Draumr, you can use other pads that are 197x65x9cm (this is an industry standard known as LW/long wide) but I believe the baffles need to run lengthwise along the pad, not across. In the Draumr XL, you have to get the Fjol XL pad for its specific dimensions (I tried my old neoair and it did not work at all)

    Very good quick summary, only major point I think you missed is the ultralight set also packs down a lot smaller then the normal Draumr, tarp and pad. Really jealous you got the new set, for me the 2 big downsides of the Draumr were the weight and the bugnet zipper over the ridgeline, looks pretty perfect now but since I mostly just do canoe trips I cant justify buying a whole new set to save a couple pounds but I love Amok and am glad they're still working on their design!

    Regarding the Ultra Light Sleeping pad and its Winter Light relative....would the Winter Light be too warm for summer? I like the idea of the warmer pad for winter but don't want to over heat in the summer. Hoping you can clarify for me. Thanks.

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure, the Fjol Winterlight has an R value of 5 which rates it to -18C and the UL is R 3.5, rated to -7C. However, like most temp ratings, they tend to be a bit on the generous side...just the standard for the industry. I've used the Winterlight up to -20C but I add a standard closed cell foam pad to boost the insulation. Any colder than that and I'm not going out without the hot tent lol

  • @christopherhammond3401

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The regular fjol is technically a little cooler (R 3 vs 3.5 for UL) but it's marginal so I would buy based on weight more than R-value. The weight difference is quite a bit more substantial

  • @Johnnywalleye1
    @Johnnywalleye1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Jon do you use and under quilt in cold or just the air pad and what r value is the air pad .

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey John, you'd need a very customized DIY under quilt to work with the Draumr's design, and there's currently not one made commercially that I'm aware of. So it's all about the pad. Their Fjol Winterlight has an R value of 5, rated to -18C/0F. I've used it at that temp in the hammock and on the ground and added a cheap closed cell foam pad...had no issues. I made some winter camping tutorials for Amok (recently posted on their channel) if it helps.

    Hi, I am 175 cm. Should I go for a regular size? Some highly recommend going for an XL regardless of your height because it has more room. From a keeping balance and user-friendly point of view, which size would be better for me?
    If your girlfriend has a chance, would she still stay on the regular or switch to the XL? Thanks

  • @joshuabooth2955

    Hi John...any concerns with the durability of the UL? That is my only worry as I am fairly close to the stated weight limit.

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's very strong but it is inherently less durable than the regular (with a lower weight limit as you know) so I would say if you're close to that limit go with the regular. I know it's a little heavier but not bad and you can still save grams with the UL pad and tarp. You don't want to worry about hearing a rip when you gingerly hop in. And if a seam did tear, the hammock would be pretty useless which could be a problem if you're on a long trip

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Kirk, I don't find it makes a big diff. The main thing is the pad you put into the hammock. Their Fjol Winterlight pad has an R value of 5 and if it's really cold (coldest I used it in was about -20C) I'll put a CCF pad on top. Did two vids for Amok on winter hammocking on their channel this past winter if needed

    Hey Jon, I have gone back and forth with the idea of putting my small tent in storage and buying an Amok Draumr XL to do some cold weather camping. And thought since I trust you and your opinion I would ask you what you thought. I am 67 years old and weigh a little more then I should. I am not concerned about getting into the hammock BUT am concerned about getting into a sleeping bag in the hammock. At 67 I don't bend quite as well as I used to and I worry I might not be able to navigate in a Draumr. What are your thoughts?

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Jay, as much as I hate to say it, I would caution you somewhat. Getting into the sleeping bag in a hammock is a bit of a wriggling act. But I truly adore sleeping in it...I guess you could re-sell it if it didn't work out, but I will admit there's some risk of that given the need for flexibility in there

    John, how tippy is the XL? Which pad would you recommend and hoe important are the Amok tarps to get compared to an alternate brand to use with the Amok? Lastly, how are these for side sleeping?

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not that tippy to me...I also put my pack under the footbox so that it can't go to the ground. I would really try to stick with the Amok pads, and if you want the XL I believe you MUST use their pads. And whatever pad you use must have vertical baffles. I tried my NeoAir in it, with horizontal baffles and it can't hold it's structure. I've used my Eureka VCS 13 tarp with it and it works well, but their Skjold 10 is an exceptional tarp so easy to secure. Excellent for side sleeping!

    Hey Jon, is the Amok 100 times better than the Hennessy? I'm still on the fence on if I want to switch or not. Sleeping relatively straight with the Amok seems to be less of a challenge. I sometimes struggle fitting a sleeping pad in the Hennessy and has resulted in a few sleepless nights lol. I got an underquilt for it though, I'm hoping that makes a difference.

      We definitely prefer the Draumr. We loved our old hammocks so I'm not saying you're at a big disadvantage, but now knowing what the Draumr is like, we wouldn't go back. It's more comfortable, roomy, and more of a home where you have room to set up a bit.

      This looks nice but I’ve been through monsoons in my Hennessy without a drop of water getting in. It looks like the wind would blow the rain up under the tarp. Have you experienced this?

  • @2906mp
    @2906mp 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    If you’re still reviewing comments, I just bought the UL for its lighter weight. Do you have suggestions for winterizing it? Preventing the wind from getting through, for example. I don’t really want to have to shell out for a whole new hammock (Draumr 5.0) just for the winter. Plus, it’s quite a bit heavier.

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If there's a windchill, close the bug mesh. That'll cut the wind substantially, however it may trap frost from your breath. And avoid setting up in open areas like the edge of a lake where you'll get more wind of course. The pad is very important, and you'll want one with an R-value of 5 or higher (like their Winterlight pad). You can also throw a regular old closed cell foam pad on top before you get in to add a bit of warmth. I've done that down to -17C (with a -20C sleeping bag) and got by. But generally I only use the hammock down to -5C to -10C

    • @2906mp
      @2906mp 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@LostLakes thanks for your really informative videos and thanks so much for the response. What about wind coming through the fabric of the hammock though? I’m wondering about fashioning some “wings” from an old sleeping pad to stash behind the triangular grab handles on each side. (??)

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No prob :) The bug mesh will really cut the overall flow through the shelter but yeah some will still cut through the hammock and mesh. You could try to figure out some sort of wrap but I think you'd be much better off (in terms of weight, bulk, performance) by just adding an overbag to your existing sleeping bag to help cut wind. And yeah, if you can, set it up in a naturally sheltered spot where the wind won't be such a big factor

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Naw, it's because the Draumr has a "chair mode" that allows you to sit up like that. You pull two straps on the head end and two straps on the foot end, and it gives it a shape like a chair. Very comfy

      I would. I've used it in two enormous rain storms this summer...two of the biggest I've experienced. If the rain comes with heavy wind, it's important to pitch the tarp low and close to the hammock to avoid mist or driving rain getting blown under. And ideally to situate the hammock in reasonably dense woods to help as well
