  • Brownells Gun Techs™ Keith and Steve are again enjoying the hospitality of the great folks at Rock Island Auction Co., where they found this very well preserved Winchester Model 1886 chambered in .45-70 Government. This is a Deluxe model, special ordered from the factory, with all the bells and whistles a serious late-19th or early-20th century rifleman could want. These include a tang-mounted Lyman rear peep sight, flip-up rear leaf sight on the receiver, short "button" magazine, half-round / half-octagon barrel, and gorgeous wood with choice checkering. What makes this rifle different from other Deluxe Model 1886s is that it was one of the guns donated by American citizens to Great Britain during the darkest days of World War II.
The plaque on the buttstock reads: "This rifle was loaned to us for the defence of Britain in a time of dire necessity. It is now returned to the owner, Dean Paul D. Andrews, with our grateful thanks. R.B. Pullin & Co. Ltd. London." (Note the British spelling of "defense".) In 1940 after the fall of France, it looked like Germany would soon invade the island - and the British would not have enough small arms to fight them. There was a concerted drive in the U.S. to collect sporting arms from American citizens to send to the British so they could stop the Germans. In the end, enough rifles from U.S. military reserves were sent under the Lend-Lease program that the British did not need to use sporting arms in combat. It certainly would have been a bad day for any Nazi who encountered an angry Englishman wielding this bundle of .45-70 hurt!
Rock Island's Model 1886 was certainly donated by a wealthy individual. This is not an everyday Winchester. On its own, it is a remarkable firearm for its beauty and workmanship. But its wartime trip to the U.K. and return to its original owner make it even more impressive. Certainly adds a unique facet to its provenance!

And this is a shining example of why the American citizen should always be able to own firearms for the defense of ourselves and if need be the defense of the nation . If in the advent of a conflict which nation would be able to lend enough firearms to the American public to be of use ?

WOW!!! NOT only is the workmanship and "upgrades" something else, the history it has and above all the fact it has a plate with our friends across the pond saying, "thank you". Just in awe... Thank you all for sharing.

The plate ruined the value of it too. That's one of the big reasons it didn't sell for much.

Perhaps this brief “history lesson” might prove interesting. In the Spring of 1940, the Nazi’s had conquered essentially all of Western Europe, virtually all of Britain’s (pitifully small and none too advanced) weapons and military equipment had been abandoned in Continental Europe, and the battle for air supremacy over England, Wales and Scotland would soon begin. It then seemed very likely that the Luftwaffe would defeat the RAF, which would lead to a cross-Cannel invasion. Churchill’s government was intent on defending their homeland by ALL possible means - "We shall fight on the beaches . . .” Churchill, 4 June 1940, in the House of Commons - including the creation of the Home Guard. This was principally local groups of older-than-military-age (lots of First World War veterans), organized around often-rural hamlets, villages, and towns, and literally armed with every conceivable weapon (pitchforks, to ancient shotguns, to privately owned American rifles - such as this Winchester - donated to the cause). There was no attempt at logistical standardization, very little training, and very often these Brits had had only a handful of rounds with which fight.
BUT, that Model 1886, with (perhaps) ten rounds of ammunition, could kill more Germans than a sharpened stick . . . and at that crucial juncture, that was THE POINT.

This is a perfect example of why these old firearms should always be saved from destruction. I just hate when historical firearms are turned into police buy back programs and smelted into manhole covers. Makes me want to cry. I’ve heard some awful stories of widows doing that very thing from gun enthusiast police officers that frequented my gun shop. According to police policy once they are turned in they must be destroyed.

It's sad to think how many of the lend lease civilian firearms never came back, but had a painful ending in those gun purges throughout bloody old England.

..amazing that the rifle was returned to its owner in the USA given the Brit's propensity to destroy them all...

Honestly wonder what tools they had to make those in the day as to the cost of modern equivalents that can do the same task... a $______ trip to the hardware store (when smithing things were sold at the hardware store because that's the tooling shop and any tool can be modified too... so there all their)? "I say somewhere between $10 and $3000, first or second sale buys better tools/machines so that $3000 start up becomes a $10 auction pallet find as it would all fit on a pallet, don't need the $10 just need space cleared out"
