  • Hi all. It is, of course, completely presumptuous of me to dare to broadcast a reaction video giving my thoughts, as a Christian, on a video from an absolutely brilliant man. But if Jordan Peterson were here, I have a feeling he'd say... do it anyways. So I will. :-)
    I appreciate Dr. Jordan Peterson. Join me in praying for him.

    I started following Dr. Peterson when he first came on the radar over his resistance to compelled speech in Canada. I have seen various talks he has given including some of his academic lectures. He was raised in the church (I'm not sure what denomination but I think it was a very traditional church as opposed to evangelical.) but is not himself a true believer. I have seen a video of his where he talks about Jesus and is moved to tears in discussing Him. He has shared that his wife is a believer and she had started a prayer group/ bible study in their home. He is so close to finding Jesus and I think his problem is that he keeps intellectualizing Him rather than experiencing Him. Many times I wished I had the opportunity to sit down with him and discuss salvation with him. I pray for him regularly. I humbly ask that others pray for his salvation as well,

    I can see both sides of the argument.
    There was once a time when the surrounding churches, which were primarily Catholic, were responsible for not only the body (Christians members) but also the community surrounding the building.
    I think JP is looking at this through an older view of the church, where the church was the center of a town, or community and responsible for the people.
    Occasionally I’ll tell my wife, “One of the greatest mistakes of the modern church was giving their responsibilities to the government.”
    I think JP is saying, in a much more sophisticated way, “it’s time for the church to take back that responsibility.”

      @pamelashropshire7298 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      You are exactly right! I don’t disagree, but the family-positive, community-building he’s espousing is a side-effect of Christianity, not the mission. We need to pray that the Holy Spirit will convict and change hearts FIRST, then the other positive results in families and communities will follow naturally. IOW, we need a revival INSIDE the American Church.

    Hello Melissa! I was baptized in 2011 and really felt like I was a Christian but boy was I wrong. Not only did I not know scripture because I didn't read it but maybe a chapter once in awhile because it was being talked about in church but I felt like I could bend things to My views versus God's views because I felt certain things were wrong that God believed. Well just seeing me write that shows how ignorant I was. The creator of all things and his opinion trumps anything that I or anyone else has to say. Now in 2022 I actually have a relationship with Jesus Christ and I've been studying scripture for 3 years in depth at times and I still don't know as much as I need to because none of us do. This is a lifelong journey and scripture talks to us differently throughout our lives based on what we're going through. The things that I felt were wrong I now realize what I feel has nothing to do with the truth. I have found a church that my pastor preaches the word no matter what anybody feels he preaches the truth. We're now going through the book of Revelations and depth because many churches don't even talk about it but very short and to the point and they move on to the sugar and cupcake version of the Bible. I'm grateful for my relationship with God and look forward to everything I have to learn from this day forth. God bless you Melissa and your genuineness and not being afraid to speak about God's truth in its entirety and not sugar coated because things can get ugly and they don't always sound fair but God is a just God and his truth is my truth

    As a mom of three boys/men, I agree with encouraging connections with boys through how they learn. We used to have lightsaber and Nerf battles, went camping, encouraged sports they were interested in, field trips (I homeschool), and anything else that helped them feel confident towards the men they were becoming. This included how they felt their position was in the church. My goal was to raise them as Godly men who would be confident in whatever role God put them in. So far, so good. Two of them are on their own now and solely in God's hands. On churches having a political viewpoint - I have gone to two in our area over the years that have vastly different views on that. The first one was very politically oriented even so much as telling the congregation who to vote for during certain primaries. Sometimes I felt that was good, sometimes I was on the fence about it. We presently go to a church that will not talk about anything going on in the news or on social issues. Sometimes I wish they would just so we, as a congregation, could pray for those things. I like Jordan Peterson too. It's nice to see an intelligent, rational man push back on the "woke" mentality being stuffed down so many throats.

      This is an old comment but I wanted to reply. In a constitutional republic like ours, where our system is designed to be directly interacted with in some democratic ways I think that discussing the potential representatives is as or even more important than discussing church leadership. We have made politics a dirty word because dirty, unrepentant people have used politics for dirty deeds. Outright evil in fact.
      It may not be appropriate for Christians to fight offensive wars or even maybe protest taxation but discussing 'politics' in a constitutional republic like ours is important. If the congregation doesn't agree then there are likely some serious core value differences that NEED addressing. Reading Paul's letters gives me the feeling that the early church's were not at all afraid to have lively debate.

    Wow! Love this Melissa!! I just had a conversation with my pastor husband yesterday and love this quote on concentrate on saving souls! Golly! The Gospel is offensive, and it is not preached soundly enough! Sin is not preached enough, and people are going to hell, because pastors are not taking their roles seriously enough. We, as the church are not here for social justice issues. We are here to make disciples, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost...knowing that He will be with us to the end of the age. Speaking the hard truth is much harder than the "social justice thing!" But Jesus is with us. If people choose to not believe or don't want to hear the truth, they are denying Jesus...not us who speak it. And...even if offense in taken, we need to be prepared to suck it up for the Kingdom's sake. After all, no matter what, Jesus promised that he would be with us until the end of time!

    As a woman who has some masculine traits (mostly having zero contentiousness) - I have been in a lot of churches that don’t teach any responsibility. They do what you said, just “teach” life application. It wasn’t until I started listening to and reading Dr Peterson that I started to grow up. When he’s speaking to churches to include young men and then teach them, I don’t think of that as a social club. I’d say it’s more like school. I know our pastor doesn’t want to step on toes. When he and my husband and I were talking to him he had a lot more to say, but wouldn’t say it from the pulpit.

    When I hear JP talk about Christianity, I’m reminded of a quote from C.S. Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters;
    “Believe this (Christianity) not because it is true, but for some other reason (i.e., because it serves a purpose).”
    JP wants to use Christianity to serve worldly ends, and while that is good as far as it goes, it won’t save his or anybody else’s soul. He’s been working toward accepting Christ as his savior, but he’s not there yet, and until that happens it’s nothing more than using Christianity as a means of self-improvement.

    • @CoralandTeal
      @CoralandTeal ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Or, social improvement. I appreciate the JP cares about the message being sent to men, especially young men, by society. But I've seen enough men pretend to be Christians to fit in for one reason or another. Only to be temptedvinto destructive sin that then sullys the name of Christ since they claimed it, that I would not encourage men to just go to church for improvement purposes. Aren't we fighting against moral therepudic diesm? It sounds to me like thara what JP is prioritizing? Men and women need the gospel. Over and over. Repentance, over and over, and to grow into more christlike people because of what Christ has done to free us from our sin. Culture may not change- it may hate us, but Christ changes our hearts.

    I love JP as well. Learned so much from him. I'm pretty sure his wife converted to catholicism recently, can't prove it but she started her own podcast that sounds very catholic to me. He was raised with no religion but found out early the biblical stories were necessary for civilization. They are a frame of reference for most people, or were anyway. Now that they aren't, we have no frame of reference. I don't know if this is what he is saying or not but I remember when I was protestant and going to protestant churches, every Mother's day sermon was how wonderful mothers are and how they are to be practically worshipped. We would stand and get a flower and feel so good about ourselves. Come Father's Day, it was the opposite. Fathers were pretty much blasted for being absent and unconnected to their families. They were not living up to their God given responsibilities etc. I really think it was as simple as the person giving the sermon was a man and projected his own failures onto the men in the congregation. Plus they couldn't really brag on themselves now could they? I watched this over and over. Made me feel really sad for the fathers who were trying and doing their best.

    Hi Melissa! I loved that you made this video. I have heard of JP's video "message to the Christian churches" but never watched, nor did I watch anyone commenting on it, therefore I found my first time listening to JP and also your comments on what he said. I am also reading the same book like you!! hahaha!
    I would like to share my views and opinions, as a christian having grown up in a christian church and home environment, whilst being an introvert and an observer, thinker and someone who's always craved deeper understanding and truth seeker. I mention all this to give a little background of me as a fellow christian and human being.
    As I was carefully listening to JP, I have to agree with him on how men are being under attack and I loved it when you said that all this worldly opposition to what God made/created men to be, is only making you appreciate men more ... it is funny because that is the very same effect it is having in me.
    The "solution" or responsibility that JP seem to put on the christian churches when it comes to young men, sounds like a mass recruitment of men without interview required/irrespective of what their beliefs are, and this would be counterproductive in the sense that, the church (like you said) is not a social gathering or secular meeting centre point. It is the place to learn about the gospel, develop understanding on how to have a close, personal and intimate relationship with God and become disciples and ambassadors to the nations to share the good news, the gospel.
    It is us sharing the gospel with others, it is the gospel that touches the souls of people, the seed that God gives growth to in people's lives... I am not sure JP has fully embraced and surrendered to Jesus and what that exactly means as nothing is mentioned about it. It is very vague indeed.
    I have this tendency to detect patterns... and sadly I see more women being or behaving like men?? I don't know how to explain it, and that cannot be good for men!! And surely God does not like that. Also what is good is called bad and viceversa... which is something we are told would happen ...
    Do you think that JP says what he says, because he believes that whilst imperfect the christian churches are, they will still uphold the original, God designed nature and role of men?? It is much better than what the masses out of church are about!! That question popped in my head seriously...
    The possible danger I see in doing what he says as he says, without taking into consideration the spiritual side and implications... is that as a friendly place, could be pretty easy for young men to be and adapt whilst not having had that born again experience, spiritual transformation??
    Having said that, it is our duty as embassadors of Christ in this world, to love one another and protect, defend and stand for the truth and this world right now is trying to force the lies to become truth! Like you said, we need to make a decision as to where we stand, and good company, God filled will have a positive influence in those around us, young men included.
    I am a teacher and used to teach children as young as 3 (they are SO MUCH fun!!) and also teens, all the way to adults. It is true that boys go through a period of time that they play with dolls and enjoy cooking and dressing the dolls to then go to the more physical, energetic, interests and activities. Whereas girls too, go through a process (specially if you have brothers, like i did) where they like to play with cars, play police and thiefs, play football...they go then to a calmer, nurturing, and creative interests and activities... I used to volunteer in Summer camps, the 15 first days were for boys only and the other 15 days were for girls only hahahaha the difference was night and day!!
    Boys are extremely active almost 24hrs, they make you work harder at different levels and they have this unique kind of fun and beauty that make them who they are. I always ended exhausted ahahahaha... whereas the girls were more into a calmer and more relaxing beautiful, conversational, would play sports but would be less competitive and kinder? hahahaha that was a "recovery" period for me! :D
    Melissa, would it be possible to perhaps, since there was a lot of ambiguity in dear JP's speech, invite JP for a chat with you? I believe it would be something really interesting and I, like you, love this intellectual stimulation and depth in conversation! Learnt a lot of vocabulary AND when and how to be used too hahahaha! I think that could be arranged, right? I would love it :)
    There is so much I could say, but I will be pondering on what I have listened to and my role in the wider spectrum of the world! Thank you so much!!

    I listened to this message when it came out. I was excited as I read the title, because its so important. But as I listened, I also felt the message coming out somewhat ambiguous and hollow... mostly for the reasons you very well pointed out. I know Dr Peterson’s work and concerns (I also read his book 12 rules for life), so I understand his intention of helping with this message. But the problem we face in modern society, from all sides, is a profound drifting away from Truth - the Biblical Truth - the intent for God’s design of human beings, male and female. Each gender has a role and it is being stripped away from us gradually over decades now. The demoralization of society is everywhere. The destruction of the family, demonizing stay at home moms, demonizing men for being the bread winners for their families, the sexualization of children, all of these are big symptoms of a degenerating society, among other symptoms.The role of churches is to return to Biblical truth and preach it, as uncomfortable as it may sound. The more a society lives in a lie, the more it hates the truth. But Souls need to hear Truth again and be stirred, so that we have a chance to return to the original design of both genders in society, and focus on the family - the very fabric that holds society together from its roots.

    I think what I'm hearing Jordan saying is church is a safe uplifting space for men, orthodox church's with their traditions might be safer. Let's face it some protestant church's are so relaxed , these seeker friendly church's seem to be about entertaining.

    • @e.t.h.559
      @e.t.h.559 ปีที่แล้ว

      orthodox churches are definitely not safer, the orthodox church teaches damnable heresy, i.e. that we are not saved by grace alone through faith alone, with that being said I do agree with you that many protestant churches do not have a liturgy which they follow during worship services. I think it is very important for a church to have a liturgy, in order to conduct church service in a structured and orderly fashion, after all the Bible says
      “ One Corinthians 14: 26-33
      26How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying. 27If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. 28But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God. 29Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge. 30If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace. 31For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted. 32And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. 33For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.”
      Now, although this passage contains guidelines on how the early Christians were to use the gift of tongues in church, I think it still gives us an idea of how God wants us to conduct church services

    The church that I attend is a homeless church for the most part. Saturday nights is the homeless ministry and then Sunday nights as the regular.. We have an open Cafe where they can shower eat get new clothes and spend the day there from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. every Monday Wednesday Friday and Saturday and I couldn't imagine telling them that they needed to dress a certain way wear a certain type of shoes etc all are welcome we are messed up people looking for a savior to help us. I think we have something similar to that on our sign up front a bunch of messed up people wanting a relationship with Jesus Christ. I mean yes it's nice to represent him in a positive way but that could be through the way you treat people etc not necessarily on the proper way to dress especially if you're homeless and you don't have the perfect clothes. I don't know that kind of rubbed me the wrong way a little bit when he said that I do understand where he's going with it but I have to disagree. When you're trying to get people into a church you just want to love them and not make them feel judged. Cuz if you've read the gospels you see that Jesus was always surrounded by the broken and he not only was served but he served others and I think that's the point of what Jesus wants us to do love others as I have loved you serve others, there's so much more but I just wanted to share that. I really love how you break stuff down Melissa and I know I was all over the place with this I'm not even going to edit it which I probably should but nah. He himself is a baby in his beliefs in Christ, I think a church that feeds the homeless and downtrodden is living the Bible ! And that’s the ultimate reverence for god , he’s definitely an intellectual a doctor of psychology and professor but he loves his fellow man , he’ll have a conversation with the janitor and get more out of that than the guest speaker he interviewed Because they were real and Jordan loves authenticity, Jordan would definitely help out at your church in a heartbeat .

We don't care that they come in old or dirty clothes, we are glad they came to hear the word and have a meal. I remember more than 30 years ago, an elderly man, very thin, wore a very long coat, winter or summer ( probably afraid to take it off cuz someone might steal it.). I served there and brought many of my grandchildren there and he would hold them babies the entire time. We used to have to pry the kids off him so he would eat. The man smelled...but that did not matter to those babies... As grown adults today, I am so proud of their open hearts to help and serve others. They all serve in the medical field in one way or the other...one even in the prison population. But, they are not in the church... they serve but do not attend. Breaks my heart.

IMO, he's openly and transparently struggling through trying to reconcile (by God's design) the connection between his head and heart. He has an amazing gift for head knowledge with a tremendous curiosity to explore the human condition to the end (or his perception of) every associated rabbit trail. It would be amazing to see where he'd be in a few years if a spiritually mature disciple-maker similarly gifted in the ability to communicate with him at his level to come alongside, meet him where he's at and intentionally disciple him in the ways King Jesus teaches us how to love and feed his sheep.

I also think there's a utopia-seeking aspect of Peterson's message that is just as pointless as those on the more progressive side. Our world is broken, and it will not be perfect. We cannot make our world perfect. That is God's job. And we know that He will make a new heaven and a new earth and He will institute righteousness. Whether or not that happens doesn't depend on us--thank the Lord! Again, I appreciate Jordan's call and his point, but I don't think it's even up to the Church to make the world better. It's up to us to make sure the world is saved. And even that is really truly God's job. As long as people are being saved, then that's good, regardless of whether or not the world's societies rise or crumble.

      Yeah. Kind of like global warming. We don't need to stop global warming. In fact God is going to melt the elements with fervent heat. We should not be worried to fix all the things in this world we see. The only things that won't be burnt up are the things we don't see. Should we not focus on those things?

    I'm glad JP has migrated into theism with a passion, but I feel like the direction is going shows he still doesn't have the gospel yet and this is the problem. He's still stuck in worldly ideas and endgame. He is very intelligent but I honestly feel it is to his own disservice many times because he thinks himself into circles. The gospel is unique, simple, objective and provable. That is the message people need, not creating more material results in the material world when they could die tomorrow.

    As a Pentecostal pastor, I really like your content, Melissa. We need sound theology and well exegetes scripture-based sermons. I enjoy your style!
    I would presume a local church will require new attendees to undergo discipleship training before considering them for a disciples role!? Not every individual is capable of formally discipling another believer.
    Once disciples, they are capable of serving others relationally. They can edify and encourage others outside of formal discipleship. Perhaps eventuality developing the confidence to formally disciple someone.

    I would really love for you to talk more about parenting kids and the spiritual matters that pertain to it. My 4 year old son and 3 year old daughter have so many conversations with us about spiritual and biblical things, and I yearn to witness them in a way that will be understood. One thing I'd especially like to hear your opinion on is when to consider our children believers. My daughter "asked God into her heart" (not something we taught her, she heard it in Sunday school from her beloved elderly friend) and says that she follows Jesus whenever we take communion at church. We just can't tell if she actually understands what that means or is just repeating words to please us and earn a snack. I don't want to deny her salvation though if it is true.

    Thanks, Melissa! I, too, have craved other followers of Jesus to WANT to discuss the Word of God, deeply! I’ve attended organized study groups and I felt so empty and desiring so much more. We basically sat around a table and our facilitator read the prepared questions and people(some) would read their answer. There was little time for deep discussion on any given question from our books. So frustrating! I am discipline myself with the help of you, Jack Hibbs, Jan Markell, JD Farag and Amir Tsfarti, to name a few. I take a book of the Bible and do a study with the Holy Spirit guiding me. But, oh, how this ought not be! I’ve invited friends to come to my home to just read the word of God and discuss it. None have wanted to…crickets! I had one neighbor ask me to meet with her to do just that. It quickly turned into her wanting to use that time to dump her marital problems on me. She had no interest in reading, discussing or studying the word of God. So disheartening! But God! God meets with me every day and we commune as I feed on His Word and ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom and understanding✨✨✨Glory to God!

    Everything you thought and questioned as you listened to him were the things I felt and thought as I listened a couple weeks ago. He is speaking from an unregenerate mind. He thinks deeply and strongly about it, but he really has no spiritual insight because he is still spiritually dead. Without the illumination of the Spirit of Christ, he cannot know the deep things of God no matter how hard he tries. Until he surrenders his intellectual pride and recognizes Christ as LORD of heaven and earth, he cannot know anything about the Church, the Bride and Body of that very LORD. Poor JP. His intellect has continued to shut him out of the very thing he longs to enter into.

    I think you did a great job examining this message JP had for the Christian church and I agree, there were gray areas that needed to be addressed a bit better. While I too appreciate the thoughtful analogies from JP and have followed him for years now, I think he may be preaching a ecumenical gospel. I'm not sure if you've heard his message to Muslims, but if you get a chance, you may see what I'm saying.
    All in which sounds loving and good on the surface but we are told to stay on the narrow path. We cannot join forces with the world just because we want peace and safety - if anything, we are warned against that. For Jesus Himself said he came not to bring peace but with a sword- to divide! However, we know His division is a Godly one. One that will keep us on the narrow path and our salvation.
    I have that book too. It is A LOT to try to digest 😅 while I do appreciate his big words, if he's trying to meet the masses, he should strive to condense such intense philosophical views to reach those that aren't on that level.

I am married to a "word nerd" (who loves listening to you) and deep TRUTH seeker/thinker who loves Jesus, but attending the same classes over and over again about how to behave and treat your husband.....they are good but sometimes, there is a need for a bit more scriptural academia (think CS Lewis). Men struggle the same way as well though. It's like (many) churches have just resigned themselves to teaching the basics, a very surface level gospel, and there is no push/desire to go deeper and really GROW disciples. It's disheartening.

      Try looking up your local Orthodox Church there is a culture of continual spiritual growth in the Orthodox Church. Christian life is understood as a struggle and a process in the Orthodox Church with the services containing much theology even if there is not a sermon, and sermons mostly focus on the reality of the resurrection. Feel good is not a thing in the Orthodox Church but rather struggle and discipleship, self-denial and change, the spiritual food is meat, not milk once you are ready.

    I would encourage you and all the audience here to go and read the comments section of his video. Also there many Christians who are misunderstanding about what he is saying. You have to come at this from a secular and mostly male perspective to get what he is saying on its full extent. For instance what he meant by telling you g men that it doesn't matter what you believe goes with his point on other discussions where he has told young men that it's not about them. His point is that people shouldn't make their decisions based of a self centered view of the world. Such as the idea of "my truth". That is an idea he has attacked directly. I think that was his point about telling young men it doesn't matter what "they" believe.

He has a lot of good points that he makes but overall he's not a spirit-filled Christian I think that he's on his way to becoming one based off of videos and seminars that I've seen of him and him breaking down but at this current time he's not.
