Not necessarily an idea for a hypothetical gen 6, but after all these years, I'm surprised they have haven't made a witchy character named Pumpkin Spice

I think rainbow high esque dolls but with cottagecore fashions would be wildly successful. They could dip into different fashion styles but keep the fruit motifs and it could work too.

Big, poofy outfits and curly hair with sweet little fruit and dessert-themed accessories ☹️
Maybe with a line of scented stuffed toys of the characters as well! I don’t know if I’d like my doll displays to smell, but scented soft toys feel cozier!

I always found it a little sad that they straightened out Orange Blossom and Strawberry Shortcake’s hair after the 2000s. Those were the only dolls I had as a kid with “naturally” curly hair that looked more like mine.

There were a few of the dolls in the 1980s that had curly hair. Raspberry Tart, for example. I think that Lemon Meringue and Orange Blossom did as well. There were quite a few of the old-school dolls that had curly or wavy hair.
Strawberry back then had straight hair.

Considering how popular cottage core/return-to-earth stuff is right now, I'd take the Gen6 series back to it's roots of whimsy and nature themed aesthetics. The only other toy line that really has that aesthetic is Calico Critters but they're not what I would call fashion dolls.

I liked your point about 2003 Strawberry Shortcake being more tomboy like and not being overly girly. I grew up with that generation and I really believe that left an imprint on me and how I dress myself. As a kid most fashion dolls weren't appealing for my personality, but I was really into Strawberry Shortcake for just how simple her outfits were. I even dressed up as her for Halloween when I was 5. Holly Hobbie is such an interesting brand and I feel like every time I learn something new about it! I owned a 2000s doll and also a little plushie of her dog! I also loved playing the online games! I remember getting her for Christmas at my Grandma’s house and I would have never guessed that the little magnet she had of the back of a raggedy looking doll with a big bonnet was the predecessor of the tall, and fashionable (at the time) doll that I was holding in my hands! At least not until this video!

i've always adored the Strawberry Shortcake cartoons ever since I was little. And so, growing up with the 2003 and onward versions of it's whimsical world with it's fairies and mermaids, I'm actually surprised that there was never a "magical girl" generation like Ojomajo Doremi or Star Darlings. It would honestly make a lot of sense and bring some more fun to the table.
Also, at some point I really wanna cosplay as like either her or Orange Blossom, not just because Orange Blossom is black, but also just because of the aesthetic. :3

I think the Strawberry Shortcake crew feel more like Smurfs; their proximity to a fantastical world are what make them "magic" (not talking about the newest generation, which tones down the extraordinary elements a lot). I don't think that they're even exactly human - instead of being born the normal way they probably sprout out of flower blossoms or something cutesy like that

Agreed, a magical girl generation would be perfect! Not to be too much of a weeb, but I genuinely think a Japanese media company could make an excellent reboot of Strawberry Shortcake, whether it’s adapted for the Japanese market specifically or not. There’s so much potential in these characters and their aesthetics.
She already has a history of being heavily localized with the older doll lines. Even if it doesn’t get translated back out into English for us, these characters could thrive in an adaptation like the new Japanese Tom & Jerry cartoon (or I guess technically anime?)

@@blondbraid7986 like kids still go outside. I see it all the time. I live in apartments and now that the snow is melting the kids are starting to play out gathering together. I go to places and see kids at art museums, hands on children science museums, the park, the skatepark, nature parks, on playgrounds, roller skating, on sports teams. They just also have screen time like we have had through video games, TV, laptops& computers. Don't worry the future still looks bright just a little different I even heard people debating how much math they should teach because the excuse was always you won't always have a calculator but now we do (which does sound scary) I was one of the last generations I think that learned cursive writing in school, so it's interesting thinking of the concept of math being taught extremely different because we have calculators with us all the time, while at the same time school advance the math for the current generation.

if i made strawberry shortcake it would be rather 2003-esque with similar designs but maybe aged up a little? like middle school age, and it would definitely be very much the same cozy fantasy vibe, a little tomboy strawberry shortcake and her little pink cat. I think personally a tomboy character who wears pink/likes pink would be good for kids, especially as someone who is very masculine but collects dolls and likes "girly" media. anyways. orange blossom and strawberry shortcake would be gfs by the end of the series

It's one of the few things that's stuck in my head for the last 40ish years since that first cartoon. I was a little kid when it came out, and I remember having the dolls and watching the show, and wanting a Pieman doll, because I didn't have enough bad guys in my toy collection for my good guys to fight. Skeletor and his minions are the ones I remember most vividly, and I think that I had a Lurky, and I had a few evil Go-Bots, but Strawberry and Rainbow Brite and the Care Bears needed more villains to rescue He-Man from! I see Strawberry, and I have nostalgia for her, but she doesn't stick in my head as well as the Care Bears or MLP do.

hear me out but making the next generation victorian and lolita inspired i feel would be such a nice direction for the line. bring back the desert inspired characters as well as the fruit themes, focusing more on the characters and world building. something that aided the gen 3 version was how colorful and candy themed the world was, chocolate rivers and lollipop trees. each character can have their own themed cottage that corresponds to their fruit or desert. maybe even taking the series in a “magical girl” direction similar to my little pony friendship is magic where it’s largely a slice of life but with magical elements. really focusing on the characters and their friendships with one another

My introduction to Strawberry Shortcake was the 2003 run, but I always held a really soft spot for the 80s designs and dolls. I loved the proportions, and I adored how plush and poofy their outfits and hair were! You did mention Holly Hobbie alongside Strawberry Shortcake's origins, but I feel like it's worth pointing out how Holly Hobby also had her own reboot circa 2007, in a style that felt like a mix of the end of G3 & G4 Strawberry. 2 80s girls franchises that started off with a lot of pioneer nostalgia elements who then got more modernized in the 2000s where their protags would wear jeans, and both something I could see making a big splash nowadays if they leaned back more into their pioneer roots to touch on the Cottagecore audience.

  • @KikiSylvies

I would like to imagine some executives after deciding the direction is "alright! Strawberry in the urban big city where we minimize the whimsical elements!" were kicking themselves upon seeing how MASSIVE the cottagecore aesthetic took off in 2020 and how the first generation really fell into that aesthetic (and Gen 3 to some extent but that's me and my nostalgia). I think I'm with most folks here with a hypothetical Generation 6 being back to the roots of the cozy vibes of the first generation, but also keeping with the diversity from the newest incarnation. A best of both worlds situation.

For the next generation idea: I'd LOVE a magical girl reboot. Maybe there could be not only unique scents for the dolls, but some sort of transformation feature, to represent them using magic to change forms in a cartoon??
Like, color change hair that could go from dull red hair to vibrant strawberry pink hair, two outfits (one civilian, one magical girl) maybe separately sold transformation compacts that double as a Polly pocket-esque mini dollhouse?
For the show, the pie man could be redesigned as an actually threatening villain for the Strawberry gang to go up against? Maybe he wants to "steal people's happiness by robbing them of the flavor in their lives," (buhdumbum) every episode the Strawberry team finds a citizen getting their happiness literally stolen from them, it could be turned into a monster for them to fight, purify and return back to the citizen (like f.e, the person "flavor of life", the thing that made them happy was fashion designing, or baking, or acting, and when their happiness is removed it becomes corrupted and turned into the monster of the week. The fashion designers monster looks like an evil seamstress, the baker has fire powers reminiscent of an oven, the actor has a spotlight they can shine in people's faces to blind them before they attack, etc)
I'm thinking the girls would have Kira Kira Precure type weapons, like colorful whisks, candy cane wands, compacts shaped like cake? There's so much here, American Greetings pls make this reboot happen I NEED it-

It's kinda funny given that there's already a strawberry shortcake themed magical girl (cure whip from kira kira precure alamode) lmao

Indeed, my many have commented that gender roles for kids and teens actually seem to be going backwards today; in the 1970s it was considered normal for girls to wear baggy jeans and boys to have long hair, nowadays you hardly ever see that in cartoons without a bunch of people making sexist arguments about it.

    • @nymphia

@@blondbraid7986 conservative culture is now framing these things (letting girls wear baggy clothes, letting boys have long hair) as a consequence because of the rise of lgbtq+ support. instead of framing it as "people are becoming more comfortable being themselves", it's "now people are converting the youth to be gay through their clothing and hairstyles!!!1!". it's never changed -- it's just older people submitting to fear mongering because now they have to ask themselves more questions.

To be fair, while it's good to move away from limiting boys and girls from old stereotypes, it's good to remember that enjoying such hobbies by choice is not something to be ashamed of.
Heck some hetero guys like myself will consume them more willingly even if the show isn't exceptional.
And yeah without meaning to or otherwise, some media has implied or stated that feminine hobbies are no good. Like a "girly" girl character being a a foil to a tomboy or how in contrast to say Mulan you seldomly have stories where a guy can enjoy "feminine" hobbies without it being a punchline.
I think the best example of doing such is the classic Fairly Oddparents episode The Boy Who Would Be Queen.

I love strawberry shortcake and I mostly grew up with 2009 era but I was on the cusp of 2000s and 2010s eras of toys, so I vaguely remember watching the old series and I SWEAR I had the winterberry twist gingersnap lmao. Despite my eternal love for the 2009 era, I really wish they kept the curls. Being a mixed girl with tight curls seeing so many characters with tight curls was so cool to see. I agree with you about all your critiques about generation 4 (esp orange blossom), and as a cusp millennial who grew up with the gen 3 strawberry shortcake I too have a great fondness for that series. Something you did not mention however is Gen 4 actually has a comic series, and I have a particular soft spot for it. The designs are too samey still and the stories themselves are not extraordinary, but I remember the art was very charming and surprisingly good quality. It had a similar cozy vibe that the original show had. That was the closest gen 4 got to me feeling like original gen 3 honestly : , )

I think it lumps them in with all the other teenage, non-Barbie fashion dolls, & loses all the cozy charm. And that line about how Gen 4 SB now spending her time chatting on her cell phone instead of brushing her cat, it just makes me a little sad.

I love Berry in the Big City, it's such a fun show with great characters. I really don't mind the difference from the earlier gens, it does its own thing and does it well, and the writers seem to have a great degree of creative freedom which definitely helps in writing good episodes.
A less-competent studio would probably try too hard to recreate the success of Gen 3, or just shove nostalgia at the audiance for easy likes. There is still nostalgia fanservice in the show, but it's subtle, the kinda thing where a fan would notice it and appreciate it, but someone new to the series wouldn't feel like they're missing something. Also props to Wildbrain for putting the entire G3 (and I think G4?) show on their TH-cam channel. I'd still really love for them to release full season boxsets but at least for now, the older shows are easily accessible for free.
The two specials that came out recently were GREAT, I'm definitely gonna be re-watching the Christmas one on Christmas Day XD They handled the CGI really well, making it feel just like the rest of the show and not a jarring transition.
EDIT: Also, off-topic, love those Powerpuff Girls Z dolls you've got in the background :O

I think I'm in the same generation as you, late 20s, but the Strawberry shortcake I waws most familiar with was the one from the 1980s, solely because I owned the book "Strawberry Shortcake and the winter that would not end". It is a very heavily fantasy story with all the kids, who apparently live alone with no adults, meeting talking animals while searching for a magical crystal that will cause spring to come. I really loved that book, but I didn't have/know about the dolls.
Curse you for making me think of New Ideas to put on my New Ideas shelf, but I think I would go heavily fantasy with the reboot. I'm thinking like a cloudy-with-a-chance-of-meatballs talking animals+food, maybe have a She-ra esque setup where Strawberry + friends havent explored their fantasy world due to some danger and now they have to go on adventures to help save it. I'd want the food theme to be like, relevant to the plot, so maybe you could do something like they can make magical sweets that give them superpowers. Maybe they go to a magical academy where they all learn to make magical sweets, like alchemy but with baking. Actually I think thats a great idea, they should just do a magical baking academy.
You mention in the 2000s people were upset about the "sugar" theme but fuck that I'm doing reverse reverse on that idea: I think each character should have a signature recipe that comes in a little recipe book. Lean into the idea of teaching kids Life Skills like cooking simple meals. The dolls come with comically small whisks and bowls and fake desserts and the commercials all show kids having SS making a dish and then them making the dish and having the doll pretend to eat. (I think parents would hate this idea but i would have loved it as a kid, my parents baked bread and cakes with me

My favorite version is actually the Marvel comic version from the 80s.
They're interesting because up until issue 3 _("The Incredible Treasure Hunt")_ Strawberry Shortcake and her cute friends wore their original clothes, but at the end of that adventure Strawberry lost her bonnet (a dragon ended up wearing it and flew away) and they all ended up messy and dirty. This was used as an excuse to give them all a new look, so they would look less dorky and old-fashion. That's the --berry-- very first time an update on their fashion was attempted.
And so, issue 4 is called _"The _*_NEW_*_ Strawberry Shortcake"_ and her new look was her official look until issue 6, which is the last issue. In the cover of issue 4, we see Strawberry Shortcake being "transformed" into her new look by the "Berry Princess of Fragrance". Yes, the interesting doll you mention at 15:13 had an active role in the story of these comics.
So, I would recommend reading the comics, but even if you don't you should look up the cover of issue 4. Strawberry Shortcake's hair goes from yarn to flowing, and her apron disappears, and her dress becomes simpler and looks kinda like something more like an outfit Rainbow Brite would wear, and instead of a bonnet she wears a large strawberry-themed bow.
They definitely didn't make dolls based on those designs.
All of this are things I learned recently, when a group of cartoon-loving friends and I brainstormed ideas for a new Strawberry Shortcake generation. We came up with neat ideas and elaborate plans, but of course that was all for fun. We don't own the rights to it.
My wife had some dolls based on the original designs when I met her, but I'm pretty sure they got lost when we moved. Too bad.

My favorite version of her was definitely the 2000s one. I grew up with that. One of the things I really liked about her, which I'm bummed is missing in the newer versions, is that she wasn't super feminine. And I mean that as in she wore pants and had really short hair. I liked that so much because that's how I dressed. I was more of a tomboy and I liked that she was like me, as opposed to most female characters that have to be really pretty and have long hair, wear dresses. Not to say girls shouldn't be depicted wearing any of those, but I liked that she dressed differently. I really wanted that representation in girl characters, like how my favorite Winx character was Tecna because she had short hair and wore pants in her main outfit, or this one barbie i had that had an undercut.
I feel like a lot of franchises that are made for girls still have all their characters abide by traditional feminine beauty standards. They are all glamourous, fashionable, have long pretty hair. Where's the love for the butches, the tomboys?

I remember when the Berry Bitty Adventures came out (because that was my first intro to gen 4), I was so mad. I hated the designs and the amount of bright colours hurt my eyes (also, CGI Huckleberry Pie STILL haunts my nightmares)
I'm actually trying to redesign Strawberry Shortcake characters, and I definitely want to lean more into the fruity dessert theme with their clothes, and make it seem more chill because shows that seem... really high energy (like Rise of the TMNT) tend to greatly overwhelm me with how much is going on, to the point I usually can't watch a full episode in one sitting, much less a few at a time
