      She was like Dora, a kid that could do adult things like bake and travel long distances alone or with just some animal companions. What REALLY threw me off was Apple Dumplin.’ Do the fruit kids just spawn like cabbage patch kids? Was Strawberry at one point caring for a newborn all alone? Maybe they have accelerated lifespans, and that’s why the kids act older than they appear, and there’s no adults anywhere

    Pumpkins and gourds are actually berries! A good rule of thumb is that if they have many seeds inside, they’re berries, and if they only have one, they’re drupes. If they have seeds outside they’re accessory fruits iirc, so strawberries aren’t berries, they’re accessories.

    Strawberry Shortcake is so nostalgic for me. I grew up watching the 2003 version and then later the 2009/13 one with my siblings. As a kid I had several Strawberry Shortcake toys, including a doll that would sign the Friendship Grows Like a Flower song. I think my biggest problem with the newer adaptations is that they’ve strayed away from what originally made the character. They’ve forgotten that she’s Strawberry *Shortcake*, not just Strawberry

    I don't know if you've already seen it, but if you want something else to watch with slice of life fantasy vibes, may I suggest the cartoon Hilda? My mom and I recently watched the first episode and trust me, the vibes are immaculate and cozy and you know, insert your adjective of choice here. The screenshots I've seen of the Moomin animated series also seem to fit that vibe, I haven't watched it myself yet though.

    • @HeavyMetalMouse
      @HeavyMetalMouse ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I can second that Hilda is a wonderful show. It has that 'magical world that would be neat to just exist in' vibe, while also having a bit more of the story-focused character stuff, more on the 'solvable through exploration and trying to understand stuff'. I particularly like that the show establishes layers of weirdness - like how in the city there is the 'normal weirdness', but then there's weird stuff that the city people don't believe or won't deal with, but Hilda is more used to, being originally from out of town, but then there's weirdness that even she's out of her depth with. It helps make the world feel more organic, because there does exist a 'normal' to these people, even if it's a very weird normal. :)

    I rewatched all the various SSC cartoons last summer, and that really hammered home to me that every version has its pros and cons. The 80s specials set the stage for all the versions to come and have a pretty good pedigree: the first three were written by the guy who wrote the Rankin/Bass Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, and have songs by Flo & Eddie (same guys from The Turtles). The last three were one of Nelvana's earlier projects with songs by John Sebastian. Plus, Russi Taylor is *the* voice of Strawberry Shortcake. But the other characters didn't have a lot of, well, character. The first three specials at least gave the new characters something to do, but the last three treated them all as interchangeable.
    As you said, the 2003 version has that cozy feeling, and the character designs are great, but the animation was often not so great. My biggest gripe about the series, especially when it was coming out, is that the voice acting was done mostly by actual children, but without enough voice direction to make them sound good. The main cast got better as the series went on, but those first four specials are painful.
    Despite the unfortunate sameness of the character designs, Berry Bitty Adventures is my favorite version, partially because there are actual professional voice actors again, but mostly just because I like the writing more. And that they didn't try to cram in as many characters as possible, a flaw of both the 80s and 2003 version. The new characters added actually get to develop, and the characters already there didn't have to fade into the background to make way for the new ones. But the mid-2000s CG is definitely a detriment, though you do get used to it after a while.
    Berry in the Big City's biggest flaw is that each episode is only 4 minutes long. It's hard to really develop the characters in such a short time. It's other main flaw is that it's sometimes painfully obvious that it was made by people who worked on MLP (like how they turned Sour Grapes into a Maud clone). Other than that, this is a really solid SSC iteration. The characters are all pretty distinct, the animation is fun, the songs are good, and the episodes are able to do a lot with their short runtime (most of the time).

    • @kootunesscrewy
      @kootunesscrewy ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean... the Rudish Mickey shorts were usually 2-3 minutes. Yet, they are still enjoyable. I don't really mind cartoons becoming just mini shorts for only 2-6 minutes.
      Also, about the animation in the 2003 series, you probably know it's from DiC. A studio that is notorious for having stiff animation (mostly during its final years, 1996-2008).

    The 2003 version of strawberry shortcake makes me remember of the 80's my little pony, trollz, bratz, girl focused media in general back in the 2000's that was more of a "hey this is a show that doesnt need a lot of brain power, just enjoy it", no over-arching plot, a life lesson hammered somewhere, pretty stuff everywhere and a lot of toys. It was a great time to be a no thoughts head empty child.

    A comic/graphic novel series you might like that I've been reading my daughter Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson. It's a comic series that's in the style of Calvin and Hobbes in which Phoebe lives her everyday modern life with her best friend who is a unicorn called Marigold. It's basically a slice of life series with magic elements as in other magical creatures are very much around. Haven't read the whole series yet but the later novels do have the characters solve problems but it's not a big overall plot like Owl House or anything. I find it quite enjoyable when I want a comfort read.

    2003 Strawberry Shortcake was 100% a tween (also this is my favorite iteration due to nostalgia) . She had so much responsibility. I loved it so much as a kid. Orange blossom was my favorite main character but I adored Strawberries friends from around the world and Blueberry muffin.
    2015 was interesting The berrykins really threw me off when they were introduced and Raspberry not being a sporty girl and Plum not being smart was weird. But I really liked Sour Grape (and Sweet I guess) when she was introduced I mean sure she was different from the original but she was an icon. I wanted to be her.
    I had not seen the new one and I am so disappointed in the Sour Grapes design. The only thing I knew about before this video was that Vincent Tong (Kai’s VA) was Huck and they made Plum a boy again. I’m interested to see what they’ll do though.

Like instead of Strawberry Shortcake, you had Rosita Fresita/ Frutillita (I've some intros using both, though Rosita Fresita is the most iconic)
    Orange Blossom- Naranjita

    I didn’t grow up with any of the shows, I only ever watched the 2006 movie “Strawberry Shortcake: The Sweet Dreams Movie”, which was one of those movies I watched over and over and over again as a child, yet the only parts I remember of the movie make it seem like an absolute fever dream, I haven’t rewatched it as an adult, so I don’t know if it’s as much of a fever dream as I remember it being.
