Strawberry Shortcake was actually the very first voice acting role for late voice actress Russi Taylor. Who would become best-known for voicing Minnie Mouse and Birdie the Early Bird.
Russi and I share a birthday. May 4th. I was so sad when she passed. I loved watching many of the shows she was in. Especially the Simpsons. Martin was always a favorite of mine
I'd know her voice almost anywhere and I was so sad the day I found out she passed away. She and Mickey's voice actor Wayne Allwine were actually married until Wayne passed away back in 2009. As a kid and teenager I mostly only knew her as the voice of Minnie Mouse and a few other Disney characters, so I was really surprised to find that she was in this and when I was younger I was also surprised to hear her in "The Simpsons" and in the 1980s version of "My Little Pony".
My grandma used to have these old Strawberry Shortcake books based on this series, and I'm actually kind of upset that we got rid of them. I hope that at least whoever has them now is taking good care of them, I have a lot of fond memories from reading those old books...
The baby didn't have a name because they were selling a baby doll called "Baby Needs A Name" that you were supposed to name when you got her ---- this was around the time the Cabbage Patch Kids had just hit big. So this was Kenner's attempt at getting that sort of "adoption" play into the SSC line.
You wouldn't have the strawberry shortcake of today without the 80s version. You also need to give Strawberry her props because it was the first Strawberry Shortcake special episode that began the cartoon renaissance the 80s. Once toy makers saw how the cartoon caused a huge jump in Starwberry Shortcake toy sales, everyone wanted a cartoon to market their toys to kids. Its why you got MLP, G.I Joe, He-Man, She-Ra, Jem, Rainbow Brite, etc. All can trace their orgins back to the success of the Strawberry Shortcake cartoon.
So I actually looked this up recently and orange blossom IS a dessert. Its a type of cake. Also, having grown up in the 80s I have a strong memory of Angel Food Cake's pet skunk being named Souffle, like the dessert. I wonder if it was in the tv show, I don't remember watching any specials or anything.
yeah Gingersnap had entrapta from the netflix she ra vibes and I remember Angel Cake getting pretty bratty in the fun way like she had a competitiveness but was also Rarityish?
I'll never understand why the trope is that they all "forgot" her birthday because they're preparing a surprise. They can still acknowledge the birthday existing. Also, why don't these people ever just assign one person whose job is to hang out with the friend and keep them away from the party??
Fun fact! One time I was the assigned person to keep the birthday girl away from the party except I was so good at pretending to be totally free that day to hang out very away from her house that her mom texted me privately to make sure I was actually invited to the party lol. Make *that* the trope, it was very funny
I wondered about this story trope too!!! Usually if the birthday person finds out before they're supposed to, they tend to not be mad. So why are surprise birthday parties such a big deal?!?!?
Y’all are seriously reaching smh, There is no wrong or right way to do a surprise party. It's a party and you should be happy people put so much time into showing how special they think you are and celebrate the day you were born. How the Birthday person reacts is on them. Expecting people to just automatically celebrate or wish you a happy birthday all day is self centeredif you have not announced its your birthday too. You have to make it known. Any party, gifts or sentiments should not be expected but appreciated.
In Brazil they changed all the names so they are associated with fruits instead of desserts. So, it was not Strawberry Shortcake, it was Little Strawberry. Lemon Meringue was Little Lemon, and so on.
Im a baby of the 80s, and yeah, each of these episodes were or were going to be a toy tie-in. "I don't have a name" "It's okay, the little 80s girl who gets your doll will name you :D Oh look, an episode explaining why the dolls had scents to them. Her hair grows? Of course another toy idea, I'm sure. We children of the 80s LOVED to BRUSH TF outta our toys! I guess it's kinda cute to have episodes explain the toys better, since this was all 80s cartoons were meant for.
I do like that they made Plum Pudding a boy in the current gen, since he was originally supposed to be one and it adds more male characters to the series. Say what you will about the current series but they added a lot more diversity to the brand, and modernized it well imo. The designs for the characters aren’t the strongest but the episodes are actually kinda fun to watch imo. Reminds me of watching shows like littlest pet shop and pound puppies on the hub.
Tbh the show it’s bad but the designs and animation feels very corporate? Like the 2003 show was very much selling toys and then the 2010’s series was worse on it too but the new one…idk. The animation feels cheap and over time the designs feel less magical and mystical in their own world to jsut bland normal kids. Killed the concept for me.
Cool how you talk about these nostalgic shows! I remember coming up with little fan fictions when I was younger and thinking of more fruits to base these characters off of.
About Orange blossom Google- Orange blossoms are edible, but they are not traditionally consumed raw due to their bitter, lingering aftertaste. The blooms are popularly distilled into water and incorporated into sweet and savory culinary dishes.
"all these new weird terms, like *trans*es saying they feel what they are not-" Bruh we got blueberry from the EIGHTIES changing genders from one animation to the others and nobody said shait back then, we just accepted her😂
He looks like a Snidely Whiplash clone & a bit queer-coded (not claiming him tho pretty bad villain). I kinda love Sour Grapes tho, got a femme fatale/Disney queen feel to her!
NGL I actually really love the art style in the 1982 special pets on parade! Even though the animation is a little more limited, I think they really got the facial proportions down to something adorable and squishy! The line widths makes me think this was probably done by a Japanese animation studio, but I haven't looked into it yet so don't quote me on that lol
Tbh I think the 80s Strawberry Shortcake movies are quite cute and I'm not a fan of old movies. I think the voice acting and the jokes are so good and tbh, they fel more gender-neutral than the 2003 show so boys can enjoy them too. I still have to pick the 2003 show as a favorite because I grew up with it. But trust me, compared to most "kids" movies from that time, the Strawberry shortcake ones were quite cute.
I grew up with the 2000s and original Strawberry Shortcake and now vividly remember the movie formerly as a 6 year old. Very interesting you brought this up as I haven’t seen any mentions of the original but only that of the 2000s/2010s one. Thought the original was considered semi-lost media or something.
I was bigger into Rainbow Brite, Unicorn and Care Bears. Also Transformers and GI Joe, which were the ones I got to keep getting as I got older. I was always jealous about my sisters getting more Rainbow Brite and to a much lesser degree, Strawberry Shortcake than I. I only had a purple pieman.
The burgers and pizza smell scheme was probably because the whole gimmick of the OG Strawberry Shortcake toys was that they smelled of the berries they named for.
This was a favorite of mine when I was a kid. My sis and I had a strawberry shortcake bedroom. I did not get brands often but strawberry shorrcake seemed one of the exceptions (probably because of a grandparent) i do remember being obsessed with a babydoll of her, that if u squeezed she exhaled berry scented breath. Why that was a thing I have no idea. But yes I remember huffing those scented dolls...well...and markers and stickers! It was the 80s lol
I loved Strawberry Shortcake as a kid. I watched the cartoon, had a board game of it where you'd collect tokens of your character's belongings, and played a short SS CD game where you'd do quests and design her friends' houses by decorating cakes.
I've never watched SS. Never even owned a toy growing up. But I swear CUSTARD THE CAT that this old school hand drawn animation has me in an absolute chokehold. Why is it so p l e a s a n t
Burrito is in fact named after little donkey because it was meant to indicate it was a hard working food like a little donkey. So it actually is super cute🙂💜💙✌
The last episode makes sense purely as a toy commercial. OG (and some later) Strawberry Shortcake dolls were scented as their particular sweet/flavor and Berrykins also came with some dolls as little buddies.
I have an old VHS recording of the last special that I used to watch on repeat at an embarrassing age and I still love it despite how little sense it makes. I feel like OG Strawberry Shortcake's world was much more expansive than it is nowadays and none of the adaptations since really have had the same type of charm
This was my favorite franchise as a kid, I watched all of these up until the Berrykins special when I was 8. I remember loving that one, even though it’s bizarre when you look back on it. Each girl (Huckleberry is absent) gets a baby to care for, and Strawberry and friends get their ultimate wish to “grow up” which is symbolized by them gaining long, luxurious hair overnight. Then they play that song about changing your style. It’s like a fever dream, but I loved it back then.
Because of your videos I realised that I actually have Huckleberry's dog as a plush from when I was a baby. Which I still have because no plush gets left behind.
It's been these many years until I found out today about Huckleberry Pie. In my coutry it was "Juanito Frutin" which roughly translates to Johnny Frutti or Fruity (something along those lines). Of course the original name makes more sense, I always wondered what he represented.
I vaguely remember watching all of them, and while my young kid brain was like wow! Colorful kids that are really nice! Me, fairly older now, think as time foes on the iterations get better with other parts of the show (I still feel like they're lacking some of the nostalgia of their previous iterations)
i have very vague memories of watching the berrykins episode when i was super little and the image of all the kids stuck in that salt shaker has been stuck in my brain ever since, but i didn't know where it came from until now
I love children's media where the villain is completely reasonable if you think about it. Like the Grinch didn't hate Christmas, he just wanted his neighbors to keep it down.
Older shows were a lot scarier (ref tree crow) I just love older graphics and hand drawn cartoons etc, so much more chill than the CGI rubbish kids shows have these days 👵😂. I was a kid in the 90s but my mum raised me watching shows she'd have watched from the 70s (bagpuss, clangers, Mr Ben, Paddington ect).
I always thought Strawberry Shortcake kinda ripped off Holly Hobbie. That said, I had EVERY 1st gen 80's Strawberry Shortcake doll, including masculine-presenting Plum Pudding. And they all smelled amazing. The best one was Apricot.
Yes you are so right! Speaking as a person who was a kid who watched it! ❤. But the other thing I used to do is sneak up out of bed at like 5am and I would watch he-man She-Ra and then Jem and the holograms.
Her name is actually Plum Pudding. Blueberry is a totally different character. Plum and Orange were my 2 favorites as a kid. I never thought twice about her starting off as a boy.
2:32 NOOO that was the best part! Why did you cut off the scene where he eats the berry with such SPITE? I have seen this Clip being reblogged around Tumblr
It was a commercial for scented dolls and when they wanted to put out a new product they added that product (pets and berries) to the commercial. It didn't have to make sense. It had to be about the dolls we had or wanted and it definatly checked those boxes.
I had the record of Strawberry Shortcake in Big Apple City as a kid. I still have my sister’s Strawberry Shortcake though she somehow lost half her hair /I guess the glue dried out or something) but she still smells like strawberries. I also still have tea time turtle which came with my Apple Dumpling doll (I don’t know what became of my Apple Dumpling doll).
I haven't watched the video yet, but I am horrified at the prospect that this could even be remotely similar to the backstory given to Strawberry Shortcake on Drawn Together.
This is a great review, but it would have been an S-tier video if you had included the Purple Pie-man's little victory/scheming dance. It's hte one where he sort tap dances? And sings the dancing sound effects? Going "rat-ta-ta-rat-ta-ta----rat-ta-ta-TAH!"
I mean, each of these was just a marketing trope to get kids excited about the newest products. The last one was towards the end of the strawberry shortcake line popularity. I remember having the party dress strawberry shortcake as a child, and it was one of the final dolls I received. It didn’t matter if the stories made sense all that it mattered was that they sold toys And that worked for a long time
So I grew up with Strawberry Shortcake. I had some of the dolls, the playset that was a big strawberry, bed sheets and books. My mom dressed me up as Strawberry Shortcake for Halloween (she sewed the costume herself) and my brother was Huckleberry Pie. However I don't remember watching the shows at all. It's like I got caught up in the hype without having watched the show. I didn't even know there was a show! So weird.
They rebooted Strawberry shortcake in the early 2000's. They had different outfits and included new characters and pets. Purple Pie Man was never featured. There was an episodes where they retell the story of Rapunzel. Rapunzel has a tutor called Professor Grapes who seems to be a rebooted version of Sour Grapes. She didn't really have a personality other than "strict but fair" school teacher. The main antagonist of this version was another little girl around the age of Strawberry Shortcake and the others called Peppermint Fizz. Peppermint Fizz had a pet lizard called Cola Chameleon. The pet show episode was reused. Peppermint Fizz cheats by convincing everyone Cola Chameleon can sing but it's revealed he's just lip-syncing to a recording of someone else singing.
Purple Pie-Man & Sour Grapes were brought back for the 2006 *Sweet Dreams* movie & for the last season of the 2003 *Strawberry Shortcake* series, after that.
I remember it, didn’t really think the stereotypes were that offensive (of course that kind of stuff doesn’t fly now), but newer Strawberry is much better and far better written. The lore has way too many questions that are lingering for me and you just brought those up in my mind again. I always loved Strawberry and went as her to trick or treat when I was little. I also had a Strawberry doll that I loved because she smelled amazing!

I’ll always cherish this franchise (such a shame Angel Cake and Gingersnap aren’t in the main line anymore)
yeah Gingersnap had entrapta from the netflix she ra vibes and I remember Angel Cake getting pretty bratty in the fun way like she had a competitiveness but was also Rarityish?
I loved how Ginger Snap spoke at like a hundred miles a minute XD
Apparently the reason characters like Ginger Snap and Angel Cake stopped appearing is that there was a “no junk food” rule for the 2009 series
I miss peppermint fizz as well
@@Mooms That sounds like a set-up for a dark fanfic, where everyberry just turns super racist against the "junk food" kids and start lynching them XD

I saw the first 2 on one of my mom’s old DVD’s, and I found it fairly decent.
I haven't watched the video yet, but I am horrified at the prospect that this could even be remotely similar to the backstory given to Strawberry Shortcake on Drawn Together.
9:36 "I will berry you Pieman!" seems more like Robot Chickens backstory.
15:10 if it helps, Robot Chicken gave her one in a sketch
My sister had the toy version of Strawberry Shortcake's new house!! So many hours spent on it
This is a great review, but it would have been an S-tier video if you had included the Purple Pie-man's little victory/scheming dance.
“Just say happy birthday, don’t traumatize her” - did not experience the 80’s
I want to know what were the writers smoking and if it is ban in the country.
I still vividly remember the smell of my Meet Strawberry Shortcake cd. I miss it 😢
The trash talking in this video is GOLD🤣🤣🤣💜🏅! Didn’t even have to disrespect Purple pieman like that either🤣🤭!
Little do you know, the strawberries from Shortcake's garden are like the Norse apples of immortality; not meant for mortals
6:27 Maybe the dude was already having a hard time staying awake and just didn't wanna deal with whatever mess would happen.
Yes, I grew up in the 80s with the original Strawberry shortcake and I didn’t even remember that scary tree❤
This is how Strawberry Shortcake started, for better or worse.
I'm 40 years old & only just now fibding out that 80s Strawberry Shortcake wasn't a single one-off movie.
Finally. Someone that knows the 2021 show very well.
The new show is well written! I'm amazed at what they can do in 5 minutes.
love orange blossom's hair in the first version
It's not a uncomfortable beginning. Beautiful cards.
My sister had a Strawberry Shortcake doll that blew strawberry scented kisses when you squeezed her belly. I loved that doll.
I just remember having a strawberry shortcake doll with hair that smelled like strawberries
