I watched this video primarily because I was hoping to hear your comments on the ending, because this game, taken at face value, actually takes a rather dark twist towards the end: You look for all the world like you straight-up _kill_ Robotnik at the end, because there's no way he survived that. A friend of mine had this game when I was a kid, so I played it with him and saw this ending and came to that conclusion. He also had a Genesis so I played 2 and 3, and the heavily story-focused Sonic games just weren't really a part of my childhood despite the fact that I am actually more part of the generation which _usually_ experienced Sonic Adventure 2 as their first Sonic title. So I kinda just made the assumption that Sonic was a far more serious character more in the vein of a traditional superhero. Since this was before I knew about the "no killing rule" so many superheroes seem to follow, it only seemed natural to me that a madman who tried to conquer the world for his own greed and ambition _would_ have to be put down. Funny how my experience was so different from the norm, and I wondered if this game made a similar impression on you, too.

That thing about both designs of Sonic and Eggman being transition points between their classic Mega Drive look and their more modern Dreamcast look is honestly quite beautiful!

My older brother traded a Gameboy Color for a NeoGeo Pocket with 4 games when I was a kid, I was kinda mad at first but since it came with Metal Slug I loved it. Also the fact that it had more battery duration than the gbc was a big plus.

I thing it's worth mentioning that many people that worked on Sonic Pocked adventure would latter go on to create Dimps and work on the Sonic advance games. And this is something that you really note in Pocked adventure because it shares a specific different to the Classic's physics with the advance games namely the Rolling speed at average is going to be slower than the running speed making a huge change in the overall handling were the fastest movement option all of a sudden wasn't also the safest anymore (something that prior only Cd did with the Super Peel out beating the rolling in all most any scenario) creating a far bigger risk Vs Reward structure than the classics did.
Clicky joystick levers come in handy when you're playing fighting games such as 2D fighting games and 3D fighting games. The clicks in joystick levers can easily read your inputs when you're playing as a favorite character of your choosing in 2D and 3D fighting games.

If the Sega-Bandai merger had gone through, Sonic games could’ve appeared on the Wonderswan. Bandai was counting on Sega to provide support for the Wonderswan, but as the merger never went through, Bandai didn’t have the capital for an American launch, and overall failure.
Coming back to viewing this after some time. For anyone who likes the clicky stick there's two gamepads you can buy that have said stick which you can use to play games on your PC right now. There's the Neo-Geo Pad (4 face buttons) controller for Neo Geo systems that came with the Neo Geo CD and the Neo-Geo Pad 2 (6 face and 2 shoulder) which came out for the Playstation 2. The CD has a stronger spring in it but they both have microswitch driven thumb sticks instead of d-pads. (I got my Neo-Geo Pads used and my Neo-Geo Pad 2s brand new btw.)
Played it at toys R Us, my friend had one, and I was so hooked, I drafted a schedule to adhere to to get allowance to afford one. I was weak and failed at it though. I would have loved to get into it, but sadly, by the time I got the money , it was discontinued :( similar to the virtual boy, it was a system I adored more than the others that died all too soon

I played one when my friend Dan bought in 2001 and was amazed on how much better it was in content than the absymal Game boy color (there was shovelware galore on the system,fuck off). Nope, it was the N64, in Mario Golf, you can transfer character data from the Game Boy Color version to the N64 version using the N64 Transfer Pak so to unlock the GBC characters in the N64 version. It also allows for transferring monster stats from Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow to Pokemon Stadium.
Oh man, the Neo Geo Pocket Color. I've been wanting to do a video on this thing for a minute now. It really is as great as you say! I got mine way after the system was dead, but interestingly enough, it was packaged as the "American Pocket Station" at certain GameStops around the US. It was clearly a NGPC, but it came in this plastic packaging with the vaguest label ever. I'm not sure what the incentive behind this was. But whatever the case, it came with 6 games (and another additional pack with 4 more, including Sonic) and so I found out I loved Metal Slug and Capcom vs. SNK thanks to this thing.
Neo Reviews I never heard about that, that's really strange. Sounds like a great deal, though! I'm kind of hoping to find a copy of SNK vs. Capcom. Can not BELIEVE you could get a portable fighting game that good in 1999.

I grew up with that "unfortunate trend" of Super Sonic. I always thought of Super Sonic as being this secret thing that was reserved for the climax of a Sonic game and signified when crap was about to get real. When I started playing Classic Sonic, I thought that was awesome because I never could play Super Sonic on normal stages before.
The clicky-stick is literally the best D-pad controller ever invented. I have my NGPC right next to me as I'm typing this; I still play SNK vs. Capcom: MotM on it, and I can perform moves on it just as well as I can on any full-blown joystick.
Hey, just came from your Classic Retrospective series, and I saw you reference the Sonic Movie. I know it's just a tad bit out of your realm, but would you consider reviewing it. Again, that's diverges a lot from what you're accustomed to, but your thoughts on it would be enough for me.
Oh I'm surprised something like that on a controller hasn't come back, the steam controller had like these virtual notches and haptic feedback so you have full 360 control but let's you know your "clicking" into certain areas like a dpad would.
The main problem with the NGPC is that Neo Geo had previously been prohibitively expensive. As a result, nobody knew who the fuck any of their IPs were.
A bit late comment - but thanks for this review. I didn't even know earlier about NGPC (it was never released in Poland, as far as I know), and it's really interesting and intriguing handheld. I've bought it on ebay + a couple of games of course. And I completely agree, that Sonic Pocket Adventure is really well made and entertaining title. I only wish that bonus levels could be something different than this awful tunnel from Sonic 2... And unfortunately, this little stick is not the best thing for 2D platform game. But still - for owner of NGPC it's absolutelly must-have. And that's a real shame, that it's history is quite similar to Dreamcast's fate - very good device, but competition, "bad time" and some mistakes on the side of the company which made it, have caused it's dusk and eventually "demise".

First time I heard about this thing was in the Street Fighter Alpha movie. Sakura had one with SF Alpha on it in the scene when Ken comes to visit her at the hospital. My first handheld was a Gameboy Advance. I was way too poor to buy a Gameboy back then.
Adventure sonic was originally going to be in Sonic generations but, was removed because they felt having 2 green eyed sonic would be too hard to follow.
I got my NGPC in a clamshell package with about 6 games packaged with it (or maybe it was 8). The Pac-Man for the system is my favorite handheld version of the classic arcade game.
Its kinda hilarious what Sega did with the music. Dreams Come True was getting too expensive (I presume) and they wanted to lighten things up a bit. So what did they do? They went to Michael Freaking Jackson of all people. Its like, oh, Dreams Come True is getting too popular? Okay, lets get someone who makes them look like a footnote. I can only presume that MJ *wanted* to make Sonic music and was willing to do so for less than the combined net worth of the entire observable universe - and so it made sense for Sega.
I always wished I had bought it. Always wanted this Sonic game and the fighting games this system had. Sadly when I was able to, they were gone. I had only one friend who had one.
One other fact: The designers left to become DIMPS. Anyways, I loved this game back then & I still do now! Honestly, for me, this is the game that allowed me to get good at Sonic... Ah, good times! Josh, you should add this to your Classic Sonic Playlist, since it really counts.
I guess that's why they hired DIMPS for Sonic 4... and yet it went terribly wrong. At least, that's what some people think. Even for a newcomer to the series like me, the controls are clunky.
Agreed. It's not just the controls though. Level design isn't as good in Sonic 4. Pocket Adventure & Advance 1 were made when Dimps knew what they were doing.
you mentioned something about the neo geo pocket being the closest thing to a console sonic experience, but have you never heard of the sega nomad? It was a portable genesis, in the way the gamegear was a portable master system, except the nomad actually took genesis cartridges instead of its own proprietary things.
I was this sad man; one of seventy people on earth that owns a NGPC. No regrets, except that I didn't have a second for Versus Play - which seemed to me a major point on a lot, if not all, of these games.
The Neo Geo CD got the first microswitch thumbstick...and my ultimate emulation controller would be a controller shaped like the Sega Saturn MK-2 controller but with the "clicky stick" instead of a d-pad.

Quite literally hands-down, the NGP has _THE_ best stick of _ANY_ handheld gaming device ever made.

Adventure sonic was originally going to be in Sonic generations but, was removed because they felt having 2 green eyed sonic would be too hard to follow.

if you paid attention to Knuckles Sprite he's actually in his classic form as his eye color is plain black instead of purple .
I got my NGPC in a clamshell package with about 6 games packaged with it (or maybe it was 8). The Pac-Man for the system is my favorite handheld version of the classic arcade game.
Its kinda hilarious what Sega did with the music. Dreams Come True was getting too expensive (I presume) and they wanted to lighten things up a bit. So what did they do? They went to Michael Freaking Jackson of all people.
Its like, oh, Dreams Come True is getting too popular? Okay, lets get someone who makes them look like a footnote.
I can only presume that MJ *wanted* to make Sonic music and was willing to do so for less than the combined net worth of the entire observable universe - and so it made sense for Sega.

I always wished I had bought it. Always wanted this Sonic game and the fighting games this system had. Sadly when I was able to, they were gone. I had only one friend who had one.
One other fact: The designers left to become DIMPS.
Anyways, I loved this game back then & I still do now! Honestly, for me, this is the game that allowed me to get good at Sonic... Ah, good times!

I guess that's why they hired DIMPS for Sonic 4... and yet it went terribly wrong. At least, that's what some people think. Even for a newcomer to the series like me, the controls are clunky.
Agreed. It's not just the controls though. Level design isn't as good in Sonic 4. Pocket Adventure & Advance 1 were made when Dimps knew what they were doing.
In Sonic Advance they reused and remastered a track from Sonic Pocket Adventure. Can you name the track and the stage it was used on in Advance?

you mentioned something about the neo geo pocket being the closest thing to a console sonic experience, but have you never heard of the sega nomad? It was a portable genesis, in the way the gamegear was a portable master system, except the nomad actually took genesis cartridges instead of its own proprietary things.

I was this sad man; one of seventy people on earth that owns a NGPC. No regrets, except that I didn't have a second for Versus Play - which seemed to me a major point on a lot, if not all, of these games.
The biggest complaint I have with the Neo geo Pocket Colour is the screen cover, it scratches like no ones business.
The Neo Geo CD got the first microswitch thumbstick...and my ultimate emulation controller would be a controller shaped like the Sega Saturn MK-2 controller but with the "clicky stick" instead of a d-pad.
There's Sonic Advance for anybody who wants to play some speedy action on the go, but this definitely beats Sonic Genesis on the GBA by a lot.
