- What does Sonic Adventure mean to you? Is it an embarrassing relic that helped drive the nails into SEGA's coffin? Or is it the closest SEGA ever came to doing 3D Sonic right, a landmark game that showed the company meant business?
Much of the footage in this video, including the widescreen 60fps gameplay and Super Sonic in Emerald Coast, is thanks to the BetterSADX mod. I'd say it's the definitive way to play the game these days: steamcommunity...

He should review sonic generations
As the other fellow said, will you be returning to this series? :)
That damn fourth chaos boss
I'd really like to see your thoughts on some of the more notorious Sonic titles like 06. Do you think you will ever revisit this?
I loved Sonic Adventure sure it was not prefect but i have never played a game that is! Since you had a Dreamcast did you ever play Game Arts Grandia II for the Dreamcast? (the PS2 port was not great and the PC version on Steam is good(mostly it does crash every now and then so save often :) It was my very first JRPG so holds a special place in my heart, I have play a lot more since then. I play it at least once a year still. If not I hope you do get around to playing it someday I promise you wont regret it.
To me Sonic Adventure is like 90s action movies. You know it's not that good, focusing on spectacle over plot/gameplay and really outdated but you still have a fun time watching/playing it because of how silly it was and how much heart went into it.
I mean, that's the thing with me also. I get that Sonic Adventure is a flawed product, I do, but I don't care, because it has so much heart put into each meticulous detail that it just shines through for me.
Just look at the world building in general. There's just so much detail, Sonic Team spent a painstaking amount of effort to make Station Square and the other hubs look and feel like a believable world.
The way the Mystic Ruins and Station square connect via a train station, the cars that bustle through the street, the fact that you have to actually walk INTO levels, there's no bullshit magical portals. Hell, just look at the Egg Carrier itself. The Egg Carrier! Just so much detail into that one place alone! You can go into Eggman's study, FFS! You can see all the games he has setup for himself! The entire Egg Carrier is just devoted to developing Eggman as a character, and it's just fantastic.
It's stuff like that why I love Sonic Adventure all these years, going back to when I was just 6 years old. It's such a passion project, and we just don't see stuff like that from Sonic Team before. The more modern Sonic games, while they're more technically polished and functional, are also more cynically constructed. It lacks that big-eyed and clumsy eagerness to please that early Sonic had going into 3D in the late 90's.
I really do hope for the day that comes back to Sonic, because I just find that more endearing than what we've had for the past 7 years now.
Dr. Madd i still want another adventure game, sonic 06 was shit because the engine was absolutely broken.
Honestly I think it’s not a bad game at all, sure it’s flawed but what game isn’t? The game is fun, and the different stories are really cool (except big that one isn’t very good but at least it’s shorter than most) but overall it’s pretty good imo
It's like the independence day of video games.
Same
I love this game. I absolutely love this game. I know on a technical level it's pretty bad, but it FEELS so good. Sonic moves like butter. No other game in the series feels so smooth.
Beamo1080 I agree.
Same here. One of my favourite Sonic games.
Other than SA2 obviously
Just listen, I made a video of Tails in Sonic Adventure, where he flies through a whole stage, without touching the ground! if you want to see it, just search for "tails voando do início ao fim", or click in my icon and you can see it in my youtube page ;)
it's not bad
th-cam.com/video/P7AuitP5FIE/w-d-xo.html
People also tend to forget that this is a 1998 game.
Sonic Adventure is technically the very first 128 bits big hit remleased in december 1998, it was THE promoting platform for the 6th generation.
By adding many types of gameplays: running/flying/shooting/searching./exploring/fishing/ its mission wasn't only to promote the Sega Dreamcast but also to introduce the high potential of the 128 bits era.
basically the 6th generation of console gaming in a nut shell. That was hands down the greatest gen of console gaming imo.
128-bit? Even modern hardware is 64-bit.
@@Gnidel The whole "128-bit" thing was just Sega trying to use the old "more bits = better graphics" argument purely for marketing. Sega was able to get away with advertising the Dreamcast as "128-bit" because the CPU's vector unit was 128-bit. The CPU itself, however, was only 32-bit.
They also forget how much more refined SA2 Sonic levels were compared to this. They still had issues with the camera and a few glitches but the gameplay difference is huge. If only they kept the sonic adventure style... Oh well, still got Sonic World.
Here's the problem with that: I don't judge games for what they maybe _were_ at some point, I judge them for what they _are,_ for whether or not I would pick them up or recommend them _now._
And with Sonic Adventure - well, sorry, that's just a hard "no" for me. If the physics were less janky, okay, then I guess - but they aren't, so... what can I say?
So, I went ahead and watched all your Sonic videos after you mentioned to me that you had reviewed them. Please don't stop here. Adventure 2 was a personal favorite, and Heroes wasn't too bad. Shadow is probable terrible enough to warrant a look. I just want more Sonic content. :(
In my opinion, Shadow the hedgehog is Okay but, What the game suffered from is laziness, Inconsistency, and development hell. But I could see where your coming from and I respect your opinion. :D
@@gysecular3165 the game suffered from trash camera control but I still love it!

Man, I hope this show doesn't end in 2015, because I honestly believe you're one of the most underrated TH-camrs out there. I love how in-depth and entertaining these videos are, and you can tell just how much effort went into making these.
Heh, look at him now! It’s so cool to see how far this channel has come
I disagree I thought sonic looked cool on the Dreamcast art cover
One of the reasons the Dreamcast version of Sonic Adventure is one of the best Sonic (3D) games is because of the adorable as hell character designs (and just its old-school CGI graphics in general), both in 2D and 3D!
Agreed, I always thought he was cool, it fit with how I imagined him as a kid playing the sega games.
This is when he was a kid
Ok
@@somethingsomething9008 he said that the artstyle was bad so no he still dislikes it.
It's weird for me to imagine that, at one point, Modern Sonic's design was new and controversial. The new design is so widespread now that it's completely supplanted the old in most people's minds.
The classic design will always be the best.
I personally always like modern Sonic's design more. Classic Sonic like a lot of older designs was just kinda... alright. Nothing special about it really.
"... And in 1998, the *Dream* was *Cast* ."
I see what you did there.
Well hey, it really was.
Late 90s forever!!!!!!

I love Ryan Drummond as Sonic.
Most do. He gives the character a lot of charisma and energy.
Just listen, I made a video of Tails in Sonic Adventure, where he flies through a whole stage, without touching the ground! if you want to see it, just search for "tails voando do início ao fim", or click in my icon and you can see it in my youtube page ;)
Ryan Drummond is my 3rd favourite sonic voice my second is Jason grithith and then Rodger Craig smith is my favourite but I agree with you Ryan Drummond should have been sonics voice in sonic x
Same here
@@ryanchin6334 Roger kinda sucks as mainline sonic, he’s better as boom sonic. It’s just the design. Modern sonic fits Jason Griffith, adventure Sonic fits Ryan Drummond.
The way you re-enacted your first reaction to Sonic's current main design kinda reminds of how a lot of people (Especially those who how grow up with the Dreamcast and/or modern era games) react to the Sonic Boom designs of the characters. Also when will you upload the final part of your Donkey Kong Retrospective and will there be a SA2 video?
+vulpixsmi That's a really great point about the redesign. I hadn't considered that.
The DK Rap-Up should hit sometime this month. Sonic Adventure 2 would be in 2016, if I continue TGC.
The Geek Critique Yeah,2016.
I view Sonic Adventure as an amazing video game, even today. I always thought of Sonic and his friends as living on earth with humans, and the classic games taking place on islands humans don't live on. I thought all the levels of every character were fun. I know I kinda kiss asses of these games, but I honestly view them as great games and love them so much.
At no point in this video do you hear "Oh no." 0/10 unsubscribed.
You DO hear “& Knuckles” though, so he deserves some credit

who cares about that stupid meme
"What does Sonic Adventure mean to you? Is it an embarrassing relic that helped drive the nails into SEGA's coffin? Or is it the closest SEGA ever came to doing 3D Sonic right, a landmark game that showed the company meant business?"
The truth is Sonic Adventure is not wholly either of those things, but rather somewhere in the middle. It certainly portends the direction that the series would go, but given how it was received at the time and the fact we're still having this debate sixteen years later, it certainly has merits.
The people who bad mouth Adventure and hold it up as an example of 3D platformers worst excesses are wearing some hardcore nostalgia goggles and don't understand the context of the era it came out in, and don't give the game the benefit of the doubt beyond the surface most cosmetic aspects and basic gameplay elements.
The people on the other side of the debate though are hitting the nostalgia blinders just as hard though, as the game does have some significant issues that hold it back.
Most everyone these days reduces opinions to easily formed black and white, great or sucks extremes that leave nothing in between. And the truth is Adventure is a more complicated game than that. There are great things about it just as there are critical flaws that drag it down. Adventure to me is a beautiful contradiction, and it deserves more effort than just writing it off garbage or a unassailable classic.
+mag1011 Very well said, and I hope it came through in the video that I was making the same point. :)
Basically. The only points I disagree on are that I love the Adventure art style to death and I think the cheezy acting adds to the games charm.
+mag1011 Oh yeah, I rather like most of the acting, too. I was just saying that when Sonic opened his mouth and Jaleel White's voice didn't come out, it was really disconcerting at first.
+The Geek Critique It's all in personal experience. Sonic still sounds like Ryan Drummond to me, and the later actors have never really sounded quite right to my ears ever since.
Jaleel White's sonic was awful. Idk why you were expecting that? I grew up on the cartoons and the OVA movie and not even I was expecting the voice actor to be the same.
I love the approach you take to examining this game. This seems like the most fair, most heartfelt look at this controversial game. Subbed!
"In 1998, a dream was cast" You think you're clever!? You think you're funny!? Well good for you cause you are!
I think Sonic Adventure is at least playable. I find it more appealing than Donkey Kong 64, a game that I personally think has aged far less well. I always wanted to play DK64 because I loved the DKC trilogy, thankfully I was kept from it because when I finally got a chance to play it and watch others play it, for better or for worse, I am glad I didn't. Maybe it's the lack of free time university student in me talking.
+TheGuyWhoIsSitting Well, I don't know if you've seen it, but I also did a video on DK64. I didn't want to draw the comparison TOO much within this video, but DK64 over-extends itself with playable characters in a far more problematic way than Sonic Adventure does.
It's one of the best Sonic games. The Sonic Adventure Trilogy, and yes I'm counting Sonic Heroes as the third Sonic Adventure, is really good. I like Sonic Adventure over Sonic Adventure 2 & Sonic Heroes but, as a whole, The Sonic Adventure Trilogy is the last great trilogy of Sonic games. We went from Sonic Adventure in 1999 to Sonic Heroes in 2004. If I had to rank this trilogy, Sonic Adventure would rank #1, Sonic Adventure 2 would rank #3, & Sonic Heroes would rank #2. I hope no one complains about my rankings.
Night Hound I personally think the adventure trilogy and unleashed is my favorite sonic games of all time they have the best storylines the best gameplay and the most memorable part on why I love the sonic series so much it's a shame that the new sonic games storyline sucks and the gameplay is mediocre at best horrible at worst (*cough* sonic boom rise of lyric *cough*)
"6 Stories

+Human Jokic That shot is of the Japanese case. Now I understand why they changed it for the West.
The Geek Critique Yea when I saw it and read it, I immediately had to pause, re-read it to check if I wasn't imagining things, and laughed.
By the way loved the video, you pointed out a lot of things very well.
yoyoyoshio267 IKR!! Hahahahahaha
7 stories counting the super sonic story
I think I replayed the Nostalgia glasses part like 5 times.
Ahh, yes, thank you for "At Dawn" at the end. What a great tune to end on
+FriendofSonic Glad you appreciate it, I was hoping someone would notice. Love that song. :)
One of my faves from the entire series!
+FriendofSonic I was going to say the same, it was a good choice for an ending tune!
Indeed an awesome song!
This still remains as my absolute favorite Sonic game. This is the most fun I've ever had with a Sonic game.
I always really like gamma's story. in fact I was sad that tails and eggmans mech shooting felt so sluggish and terrible in sa2, when Gammas managed to feel fun. And also surprisingly emotional, like damn.
I suppose I shouldn't say terrible, as I enjoyed their shooting too, but Gamma felt like he had really good mobility, while tails and eggman didn't
I recall thinking I was clever by making my AOL email have ANT at the beginning to make people assume I was a moderator lol
I actually liked the way the music changed in the second phase of the Perfect Chaos fight. "Open Your Heart" makes you feel powerful and pumped up, the way Super Sonic should feel. But when you bring Chaos' health to zero, instead of the battle being over like it would have been in any other battle, Chaos just comes back with full health again. When that ominous music kicked in the first time I played it, I was nervous. Part of me started to wonder if Chaos could be beaten, or if he'd just continually regenerate until I eventually ran out of rings. It wouldn't have been the first game I played where the player was intended to fail, but of course that wasn't the case here. The music, though, helped create this tension, building up Perfect Chaos to be a terrible foe.
I loved Sonic Adventure and still do! :D But Sonic Adventure 2 will always be my favorite Modern Sonic game :) :) :)
Adventure 2 was sick and I still think it blows one out of the water. I've replayed one a couple of times but 2 me and my best friend played it to death back in the day on her gamecube and I still really enjoy going back to my favorite stages to try and a rank them. I also really loved Heroes back in the day although I realize that one is a bit contentious.
yeah the dreamcast triology was awesome
Adventure 2 has it's flaws as well. I'm not saying it's a bad game, but it's that great either.
Only thing I disagree with

@@scarfaceAC2 and skipable cutscenes. That right there might sctually give it the edge cause the cutscenes in SA are a dread and last 2 hours
I understand where your coming from with the live action segments trying to make the video seem more personal but I honestly preferred the old style more.
+DrMaddWorld
I have to say, I agree. I feel like the only purpose of live action shots (not including the hardware shots) are if they serve some function that can't be achieved otherwise, like some sort of visual gag. It kind of worked with Josh's Sonic t-shirt, but otherwise felt unnecessary and actually sort of takes you out of the video. I made this mistake myself when I used to make gaming videos: showing yourself needs to serve a purpose that adds significantly to your video otherwise it'll drag it down.
When the AVGN does shots of himself, it's usually to show his frustration and do a gag. When JonTron shows himself on screen, it's again for funny reaction shots. With TGC, it doesn't feel like it belongs. This isn't a funny reaction sort of channel, but one of well, critique...and also probably nostalgia.
Dr. Madd same

There needs to be a mod of this game where you automatically switch characters to follow the story chronologically. Instead of having to find Froggie 5x in a row after doing crazy fun platforming.
Sonic Advenutre may not be the best 3D game in the series on a technical standpoint, but it for sure had the best atmosphere. It was so much fun to explore the hubworld, and once it was over you really felt like you had played through an adventure.
I prefer how modern Sonic looks tbh, especially in Uekawa's art where has these crazy, physically impossible poses, that shit eating smirk also has a special place in my heart, he's always having a good time
He does like that design, when he was a kid he hated it
Thanks for the BetterSADX plug there Josh!
Gave ya a plug right back in the BetterSADX Guide.
I hope 2015 isn't the end for TGC, I'd hate to see such a good channel die so young!
I always grew up Sonic Adjacent. I never had a Genesis or a Game Gear or really any Sega hardware but my cousin did, my next-door neighbors did, and I have nothing but fond memories of experiencing the Dreamcast and its titles with them and their friends. All those hours of watching them play Sonic Adventure has given me a soft spot for the game and even though I've never really played it extensively, I'll always be a fan of it... until they started breeding chaos. Then I left. That shit got super weird super fast.
"Sonic Adventure has to be the most ambitious game that Sega ever made".. ehem, Shenmue says hi
It probably would have been more accurate to call it the most ambitious game that *Sonic Team* ever made, which wouldn't really be wrong at all.
S3 hype!
And like Shenmue, it's garbage! :D
This is my favorite game of all time. I don't care about the buggyness, I don't care about how ugly the cutscenes look. The fact that you can play as six different characters that each had their own story to tell woven into a bigger story made it mind-blowing back when I played it as a kid in 2005. No Sonic game can ever top this in my mind.
there is a special charm in it
that's for sure

Sonic 3 & Knuckles and this game are the first Sonic games I ever played. And to be honest, I love them both. I replayed them few months ago and I still have a blast playing them. I hope that Sega will bring back the Adventure formula for their next 3D games and refine that trough many games as possible.

First game I ever played was on Christmas of 2000.
I played this on the Dreamcast and then I got the next game on release. It was amazing.

.....
TGC, do you think love can bloom, even on the battlefield?
Looking at this three years later, it is really jarring hearing you talk about Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast, with footage from the PC version, at a high resolution, without HUD scaling, with no Dreamcast Conversion, and I think it was even before we fixed the FOV for widescreen.
Haha, yup! This video would be different in a lot of ways if I did it now, and that's definitely one of them.
Just want to say I love your insights and think your videos are dope as hell. I started contributing to your Patreon about half a year ago and seeing a new video of yours has always been a little highlight of the day. I've actually wanted to start a show like this myself, but haven't had the time as my life's moved in different directions. Do what you gotta do, but I hope you're able to keep going with Geek Critique, even if it's more infrequent than usual.
I actually really loved Amy in Sonic Adventure. She basically felt like Sonic but with more fighting and exploring.
Absolutely fantastic review.
I would add:
SEGA. SONIC TEAM. Whoever is in charge of Sonic nowadays! Listen please. I know a lot of fans feel this way. Sure the game was glitchy in some parts, and the camera kinda wonky at times, but look at this game! It's FUN! I enjoyed Colors, Generations, and the day stages of Unleashed, but the focus on INTERESTING platforming is almost totally gone. Why is Mario still relevant? Because he does new and interesting platforming WHILE still having freedom to explore in a non-linear fashion. Balanced gameplay. Not all SPEED SPEED SPEED. Just look at Sky Deck for cryin out loud! Perfect example of fun platforming, wide-open, excellent and interesting level design, speed in the right places. Everything doesn't have to be about boosting and generic platforming. Also, look at the freedom Sonic has to run around. Why would they take away the spindash? Ugh I could complain all day.
Also Sonic Adventure DX was terrible. Dreamcast version forever.
Just give us a refined, well planned out, non-rushed, expertly designed and FUN SONIC ADVENTURE 3 PLEASE! THANKS
*end rant*
Shikoshen This is one of the only enjoyable rants in existence
They already did. It was called Sonic the Hedgehog and it released in 2006.
Then they released Sonic Adventure 4 in 2008. It was called Sonic Unleashed.
Also, don't ask for SEGA to make more variety in Sonic like Mario. Sonic's biggest problem is too much variety. That's how you get bullshit like shooting and treasure hunting sections being the bulk of Sonic Adventure 2, or the bullshit werehog in Sonic Unleashed, or whatever the fuck Lost World was trying to be, or Sonic Boom.
Mjc fails to realize that Knuckles & Eggman had several of the best stages in Sonic Adventure 2. Remember Wild Canyon, Pumpkin Hill & Meteor Herd? Or how great Iron Gate, Weapons Bed, & Cosmic Wall feel? Playable characters made the series great & are why 3K surpasses Sonic 2. They are why Mania Plus feels so great to play. Sonic Team & Sega screwed over the entire series with dumb decisions like "Just Sonic" & hiring writers who knew absolutely nothing about the series over the past decade.
Shikoshen man I’ve been praying for sonic adventure 3 for over 15 years im 20 now i might give up hope smh
Jebus...why does everyone hate the DX version with a passion?! God guys it’s not bad
The music is so unbelievably good for this game as you point out. I love how all the main characters have theme songs with lyrics.
The instrumentals are really great too. So many awesome tunes. The game might be flawed but I think the music is worthy of the 90s Sonic pedigree.

Why does no one ever mention this during Sonic Adventure reviews? I feel like I'm the only one who remembers this.
Big the Cat was created, at the time, to show off SEGA's new add-on for the Dreamcast - A FISHING CONTROLLER. I shit you not.
www.amazon.com/SEGA-Dreamcast-Fishing-Controller/dp/B00000K2R9
Makes a BIT more sense now, doesn't it?
what the hell thanks for sharing this info
@@jokx4409 Yeah SEGA was always big on the gimmicky gadgets and whatnot - especially in Japan. And their Arcade division had a slew of random gimmicky games that were whacky, yet fun. Including various fishing games - hence the controller.
The Yakuza series and their various random mini games definitely embodies that spirit
@@SH2K9 ...but why did they make a whole character based on the fishing rod instead of just a sub game??
@@jokx4409 Because, based on principle, part of the point was to, at that time, showcase overall what the Dreamcast could do, because SA was its premiere launch title.
To your point, yeah, no one asked for that.. But this is SEGA we're talking about..
I researched it and the controller sadly was not compatible with this game.
I truly love Sonic Adventure. Can't say the same about SA2, but SA1 will always be a great game to me. 9/9/99
So, voices tend to inspire an image in your head of what you think the person with that voice looks like. You look very different than I expected from your voice. It's good to actually see the man behind the voice.
To me Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 are perfection in 3D Sonic form.No seriously I love the Adventure formula, Boost will never be 3D Sonic to me. Adventure was my childhood and I'll always love the duo.
Well said, we'll probably never get Sonic back to the quality he was in those days. After 06 fell short, Sonic Team just seemed to give up. By 2010, Sonic's fate was sealed, he was cast off as a joke series much to the grief of the true fans. We were in denial for years of how bad Colors & Sonic Generations were as a fanbase. Then again the entire fanbase has been divided to such an extent Sega doesn't even know what they are doing anymore. Now there are blasphemous fans who speak ill of the Sonic Adventure games.
Bias
Amazing video, a lot of thought passion went into this and it shows. Gonna be sad to see the channel going on a hiatus after this, but best of luck to you in the future dude.
This and Adventure 2 remain my favorite Sonic titles, tbh. I just can't get behind the sterile Sonic-only gameplay we're stuck with nowadays. =/
Same Petey, the characters were what made the Sonic Adventure titles so great. The Modern Era that started with Free Riders & Colors essentially ruined the series after taking away everything that made the series successful to begin with back in the day.
The chao garden is the best part of these games
gotta love how glitches that we had to really try to activate as a kid and even then often failed at is an unavoidable part of the game that takes work to avoid when it's in a youtube video.
When sonic adventure 1 and 2 came out they were loved by tons of people, it's only with this new youtube generation that started all the bashing of sonic. The most popular thing to do is to jump on hate bandwagons. Personally I like most 3D sonic games over the 2D ones, I don't think there are any truly bad sonic games except for 06, Boom: RoL and the sonic 1 gba port.
Sonic 06 at least has some semblance of a sonic game but at the end of the day it was rushed as hell and suffered for it.
That's not really true. SA1 was adored by most SEGA fans, but even in 1999 it faced some derision. And SA2 was REALLY controversial when it came out, often described as a "love it or hate it" kind of game.
Of course, if you were a kid at the time, you wouldn't have been aware of that. What we've seen in the past few years are a lot of those people who played it when they were very young revisiting the games and noticing more of the flaws.
Could you cover adventure 2? I'm curious to know if you prefer it over the first outing.
Glitchy88 i agree I prefer 3D sonic games as well the storyline the gameplay and the overall fun I have with the early 2000s sonic is why i keep saying sonic is my favorite video game character of all time (well a tie with earthworm Jim gex and conker as my favorite video game characters)
Sonic's controls were perfect! His floaty jump was awesome, and the spindash worked miracles for blasting you across the levels
Sonic Adventure is one of the greatest game of all time... i feel bad for people that didnt have the opotunity to play at its time...
I agree.
I honestly think this vid made me purchase a dremacast like 3 years ago and I'm thankful because you introduced me a gen z in one of my favorite retro console and I applaud you for that
I really liked this game and Sonic Adventure 2, but I only ever played them on the Gamecube. I was always a Nintendo fan, but when Sonic finally came to a Nintendo console, I gave it a try... and I wasn't disappointed. After all, I always knew Sonic was Sega's crown jewel, and probably the main thing I was missing out on by passing them up in favor of Nintendo. I never noticed a lot of glitches when I played, maybe they fixed them, or maybe I'm just so used to early 3D games that I subconsciously avoid triggering glitches because I know what sort of situations are likely to create them.
This is probably my favorite game ever. Ambitious, creative, and always pushing ahead. The soundtrack forever lives on in my head. I don't know what will be this generation's sonic adventure but I am glad we had what we had
A point of contention:
A cartoon hedgehog has no business wielding a gun? I mean, sure, but at this point I'd find it charming at least - besides, if Shadow wasn't all about LOOK HOW EDGY AND COOL I AM, the gunplay would have been less cringy. Guns being in a Sonic game wasn't the issue, it was _why_ there were guns in a Sonic game.
But
Honestly
If Sonic Team really wanted to put gunplay in a Sonic game so bad...
Why did they get rid of Fang the Sniper?
It's a fantastic game.... but we all died in that spot in the first level where you go around the bend and fall through the floor lol

I've played that stage a thousand times and that has never happened to me once. Apparently I'm just blessed with luck
@@demetri2716 same here. never happened. I've played the dreamcast, gamecube, and steam versions too. didnt happen in any version
Most famous glitch in the entire game and it DOESN'T. EVEN. HAPPEN in the Dreamcast version.
A lot of people forget how big Sega Bass Fishing was around the time SA came out... that's a lot of why Big's levels are based on fishing.
Oh shit, that moment you leave a comment, then see your comment from a year ago and realize you already watched this and forgot.
"BetterSADX" just turns the Steam version into the 2004 version with some mods preinstalled. There's really no reason to buy the Steam version if you already have the 2004 version.
Still on my wishlist
Wait a sec, that makes no sense, the 2004 PC release is the same as the Steam version, BetterSADX turns the game into the way the original game was back in the Dreamcast, so yes there is a reason why you would want the Steam Version.
After listening to your well put together opinion and retrospective on an incredibly divisive game in an already divisive franchise, I HAVE TO SAY:
That spindash landing onto tails' workshop was pretty awesome.
TGC: Big the Cats stages are easy
Arin Hanson: Hold my beer.
Actually, they are pretty easy, in fact, I think they’re too easy.
@@kieranstark7213 Ha-ha-ha...sure they are
Maybe I’m saying that mainly because I had an easy time with this game compared to other Sonic games.
I remember playing a demo of Sonic Adventure in Toys R Us back in the day. I thought I'd give Big the Cat a try (not knowing any better) and after less than 5 minutes I wondered how the game could be fun with that sort of gameplay.
What does Sonic Adventure mean to me? To put it in a sentence, the best Sonic ever has been in a video game. Yea, it's got flaws, bugs and so on. What do people expect? It's from freakin 1998! 3D video game technology was very primitive at the time. I swear I face palm at people acting like this game should be something as polished and graphically beautifully as today's games. It's just not going to happen. It'd be nice, sure, but unless SEGA releases a remastered edition(which I highly doubt will ever happen) people need to stop whining about Sonic Adventure's flaws, eat the meat and spit out the bones.
The point I'm making though despite those flaws, it did so much right than wrong that I'm more than willing to overlook them. The music for example is fantastic. I have yet to see a Sonic game top this one. The closest one is Sonic 06, which is saying something. The story, other than Big's, is rock solid. The fact Eggman was not the main villain for once really a nice change of pace, something we desperately need to see again in a Sonic game and not just tease us about it. *cough cough Infinite cough* Anyway, moving on, I have to say, I like how the game at the start shows you Chaos destroying the city, so it gives you incentive to try to prevent it. Alas, it was inevitable, but at least it did a better job at showing the characters trying to stop a disaster like this from happening than a certain later Sonic game that won't be mentioned due to how much I hate it.
Moving on again, seeing how all the characters' story were intertwined was pretty clever too I have to say. It showed you that it wasn't just Sonic dealing with this threat, but so were his friends, and that they must work together to stop it. Yea, it wasn't perfect, but it's yet ANOTHER example of how this game did this idea better than another later Sonic game that makes all of his friends pretty much useless in comparison. -.-
Lastly, the character portrayals are as good as it can get for a Sonic game. Sonic is the cool, cocky hero who likes adventure and having fun, but gets serious when trouble comes and is willing to take care of it by any means necessary. Tails is still Sonic's little brother in a sense, but is now maturing, realizing he has to grow up and be his own and that he can't rely on Sonic always to help him. Amy Rose still has a big crush on Sonic, but near the end of her adventure, she's maturing enough to think about maybe it's not worth it anymore. That's great character development as far as I'm concerned. Knuckles is the no nonsense guardian, still showing he can be gullible at times like in Sonic 3, but also has fears like anyone else. Seeing him question why he guards the Master Emerald and what its true purpose was fantastic character development for him. Last, but not least, Gamma. To me, his character development is heavily underrated. It was actually really interesting seeing a character from the other side of things and how he views life being a robot and all, even willing to defect from Eggman after seeing he could be free and do his own thing. Yea, him destroying his robotic brethren was kinda dumb, but again, the sacrifice he's willing to make so those animals can be free is so sweet and touching.
And no, I'm not going to touch on Big's story and portrayal because there's no defending that one. It remains a mess to this day. Bottom line is, Sonic Adventure gets way too hate and flack for a game. Yes, the flaws and bugs are not good and I'm not going to try to defend them, but if people can't see the gems in the rough of this game, then I pity them because they're missing out on one of Sonic's best stories and adventures, not to mention some of the best characterization from the series too. Like I said, when it comes to Sonic Adventure, you gotta eat the meat and spit out the bones.
Between Sonic Adventure and Sonic '06 the verdict is self-evident: Sonic Adventure any day.
It's the game that got me into Sonic. And influenced my taste in music.
Just got the CD soundtrack for this game early in the morning today at 10:52a.m. and it's the Sonic Adventure Digi-log Conversation Original Soundrack CD and I'm listening to it while watching this! 4:26p.m. 10/17/2022
Yeah in response to all of the talk anout bugs and glitches, play the Dreamcast international version. Thats the one where most of everything got fixed.
halo3odst What does it "fix"?
@@filipmartinez1162 Well most collision issues and game breakers from the Original Japanese version were fixed and Adventure Dx added by redoing a lot of the games collision a ton or new bugs like the emerald coast one everyone knows comes from the DX redone collision and is a bug not present in the Dreamcast version.
Also can skipping certain cutscenes or doing a few things to fast soft-lock the game with the Cutscene problems being obviously added in DX because in the Dreamcast version are cutscenes un-skip-able
The only problems DX fixed are ones that were caused by the Dreamcast version being locked to 30 FPS while DX restored the originally intended 60 FPS.
4 years. I’ve watched every other video in this series but this one and I’m 4 years behind.
I still have nightmares about that weird tribal music
I remember AOL keywords quite well. I don't remember any specific ones, but I remember always seeing/hearing them alongside URL's. I was still a kid back then and I used to think AOL was weird for requiring a keyword instead of letting you use a URL, but my grandparents had it and I quickly learned they were just optional shortcuts.
"You can't play as super sonic in normal lvels"
Immediately shows super sonic in a normal level
*Makes sense*
Sonic Adventure is my favorite Sonic game. Played it so much and beat it many times. I’m sure a lot of its staying power with me centered around wasting time raising and wonky racing little Chaos.
Attempting to get the cooler variations between chao metamorphosis styles reminded me of Digimon Adventure - the latter being ambitious, but quite a time sink chore at the same time.
10:46 is that Game Grumps footage I spy? ;D
+Finalblue1234 Never before had I seen anyone so thoroughly break Sonic Adventure. Since I couldn't get Kalin to come fail at it, the Grumps were the next best thing. :P
hmmm....
Maybe the Game Grumps INTENTIONALLY broke the the game to make it look bad.
Honestly, Arin Hansen is a biased snake when it comes to Sonic games. Especially the 3d games.
It's not bias. Almost all of the 3D Sonic games are legitimately terrible.
leadbones Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations, Sonic Lost World, Sonic Rush (in a way) just to name a few. All of them are really good.
Finalblue1234 SA1 is a better Sonic game than SA2 overall, and even SA1 is an extremely flawed experience.
This really impressed 13 year old me. The graphics were a huge step up from what we were used to from the previous generation. This still has a place in my heart and I don't fully understand how people seem to this it's crap.
freaking chao mating. "mmm, kinky!"
The fan game Sonic Utopia is currently the closest we can get to a _true_ 3D Classic Sonic game imo. I wish Sega just hires those behind it and make an official game out of their work.
I mean yeah sure it may not be as great as it was back then per say... But honestly I don't think it's the game it's self that was actually at fault here? To be fair the Dreamcast version is still considered the best version of Sonic Adventure as there are a number of issues with the later ports that just damages the series even further. Messed up lighting missing effects and features and granted it added new content they removed tons of others etc.
The modding community for PC version has managed to salvage the game back to it's original glory in it's design. Because of this the Steam port which originally would be deemed the worst version actually has Very Positive reviews now and people to this day still ask for either a squeal or a remake to Adventures
Seeing this I believe the real reason DX did so bad in this case is because the reason I stated and not entirely that it's considered outdated. Just wanted to put that out there with my own two cents on a possibility...?
I've been watching all of your Sonic Geek Critque videos and enjoying them a lot keep up the good work it's informative and well done!
You know, I thought for the longest time why they gave him green eyes, and then it clicked: it's to further emphasize the comparison between Sonic and Chaos. Sonic has blue spines and green eyes and is a chaotic force of good. Chaos is a being made up of blue water, and green emerald-like eyes who is a chaotic force of evil. Two sides, same coin.
Or maybe because the green eyes is supposed to represent Nature

dont tell me you used game grumps footage...
Hey mate, thanks for these. Your writing style really clicks with me, definitely love your vocal intonation and energy too. I know you've improved since this, but it's still well done. This is my favorite sonic game and it's great to hear it given a fair shake. Maybe it's my love for movement in games like TF2 and Smash Melee, but damn it man Sonic feels so good in this game once you get a feel for the controls. Much love, man.
I wouldn't have taken out Gamma, he was a brilliant concept and generally had the best mechanics of the non-Sonic characters, his mode did seem rather underdeveloped however, a lot of his levels are rather basic and short and it felt like his story should have been longer and better connected to the main plot, he was an opportunity to play as a minion of Eggman yet there's after this huge cut following his introduction, all you do is collect a frog. :P I actually would have gladly sacrificed Tails' derivative mode for a bulkier one with Gamma.
Sonic Adventure 2 did that, and it sucked. 30% of the game being that was a terrible idea.
Yeah, but that was the result of not only giving the gameplay to different characters, but diluting said gameplay of any physics resembling Sonic's gameplay and making the whole thing clunkier slower and more repetitive.
True Gamma had the best story in Adventure, although Knuckles Mechanics also felt better than Sonic's. Both Knuckles & Gamma could have benefitted from more stages. I personally like Sonic Adventure 2 just for realizing those were the 3 best playstyles & making the entire game revolve around them.

If you sort comments by new, you'll see a LOT of bias.
I literally just did that
One plus for this game, this may be the absolute funnest game to mod

Nice review, man. I share a heartfelt agreement with you. I'm 29 with a 6 year old, and I've been trying to get him to play through it front to back with me for loke, 2 years! But he's so enthralled with Minecraft and roblox.. ....

People looking at Sonic Adventure nowadays are missing two important things:
- This is a game from the 90s. It was so groundbreaking that people tend to assess it using criteria of the mid-2000s. But it's not a game of 2003-2004. It's a game released in 1998, a mere month after Ocarina of Time. It was nearly a launch title, it was probably the first game that got lip-sync in the ingame engine, and not just the CGI (and the lip-sync is not that bad if you set the voices to Japanese - I don't know if you could do it on the US version but you could in the European). Remember Link's lipsyncing in Ocarine of Time? Yeah, I thought so. "You can't have bad lipsync if you don't have voices at all" *taps head*. It was first at many things and so, yes, it was not as refined as games that built upon that, but that's to be expected. For the time, it was well ahead of its time and very enjoyable compared to the alternatives.- Few people actually played Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast. Many people either played one of the later ports, or played on an emulator, with a different pad. Sonic Adventure was made for the DC pad, and its particular joystick feel. It doesn't feel right with any other control pad. Not only that, but ALL Sonic Adventure ports are lacking in several aspects, and introduce many new bugs. One that irks me in particular is that, in many scenes in which the original game was scripted to have you land right on a bumper, allowing for a non-stop flow, in the port you land right next to the bumper or right before the bumper, and comes to a stop, interrupting the flow. It's a bug introduced on the GameCube version that would be carried on ALL further versions. If you played SA on the GameCube, or the PS3 or the Steam version, you played the WRONG Sonic Adventure.- It may be kinda cringeworthy, but remember the game was not exactly trying to cater to an audience of 20-something or 30-something grown men. The storyline and the way the story is narrated is meant for older children/early teens, and it was perfect for this audience. I remember being twelve, playing the game, and relating to Tails' plight. Honestly, Pokémon is also cringeworthy for a 30something if you put off the rose-tinted spectacles. Not to mention Yoshi's Story on the N64...
Overall, FOR ITS TIME, it was fun to play, not as broken as people tend to believe, it was pleasant to a certain audience, and it was technically extremely impressive. That it hasn't aged well, that's certainly true. But has Destruction Derby or Diddy Kong Racing or The Bouncer aged significantly better? Meh... I don't think so. They are products of their time.
I have to disagree with most of the world. The gameplay is great. The story going out of order through each character isn't just a better way to tell a story, it's downright genius. It executes all of that well. I think if a few TH-camrs just didn't happen to dislike it and bash it - and, if Sonic 06/Shadow the Hedgehog (the video game) weren't a thing, it wouldn't have the reputation it does.
But overall, fair critique here.
It's also DX version fault. It added glitches and "updated" graphics the dreamcast version lacks.
@@mep6302 This is the BetterSADX mod he’s showing.
For a long time I have tried to understand why people forget Sonic Adventure that much and I concluded more or less the same thing of this video, now it's nice to have somebody that liked Sonic Adventure at some point saying that :).
Did somebody say ... DETERMINATION!?
OHHH YES!!!
OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHH
no
That was a year ago, dude. You're so outdated.
I still feel this game as a whole is quite fantastic. Measuring sticks change over time, of course, but as a 3D platformer, it's really in a genre that's not too popular. You can't age a genre that doesn't get much love. The story is unfocused, but the "broken" mechanics honestly make it incredibly fun.

That's doesn't happen in the real Sonic Adventure, stop show so many SADX footage.
SADX is trash.
Sonic Adventure was the first game I ever played, and still my favorite
Pre-Script: Found a really cool glitch which makes Amy's first level unbeatable, and removes a lot of items an enemies, including zero: th-cam.com/video/Ui1i8eadJPQ/w-d-xo.html (sorry about that, not everyone clicks on "Read More") Anyways...
Pretty good video! Now that I'm learning Editing myself (It's probably at ShayMay level), a lot of the intial glamor that I came across when I first found your channel is gone, though I suppose that is to be expected and I'm guessing you already knew that. I can tell you worked hard on this though!
I was curious to see how you would tackle this game, seeing how its very controversial. It seems like you tried to cover everything without jumping around too much, unlike most other people who review this game, who do just that or feel they have to "pick a side" for whatever reason. Though it seems it ended up being jumpy anyways, you mentioned the game has a misplaced focus but tried to find a cop-out for your review being like that with that ending you put, which obviously, is very one-sided. Which leads me to something else...
This is just an observation and not a complaint, so take it as you will but...Your channel seems to focus a lot on explaining what makes a certain game "good for its time" or innovative in its own right, or in conjunction of what it was meant to be. Which is fine and all, but I notice now that it takes away from actually trying to judge a game fairly, or in this case, directly compare it to its predecessors! I just feel that attitude puts gaming in this never ending paradox of trying to progress for the sake of progressing, without ever questioning why or what we are trying to achieve from this progression! Its an important part of game philosophy, or philosophy in general, that I feel gets very underexplored. And I feel its quite a shame when you put 2 and 2 together and realize how big of a deal that actually is! :O
...With that being said tho, I definetly agree that having a bunch of characters in the game playable was a big deal at the time! I remember playing Spyro 3 at age 6 in 2001 and...yeah, you get the idea. Of course now I grew out of that and now am curious as to how adults or even teens view that game design philosophy! Though it seems a lot of games aren't designed that way anymore and most people who hold that idea in high regard, due so out of nostalgia. Its strange really, that people after all this time, don't let go of that nostalgia and learn to look at things objectively, Like...how else are we supposed to move one otherwise?!
Well that's enough of a mindless rant for one day! Even if the only mindless part was that last paragraph! Hope you found this comment insightfull and keep up the good work! (I have stuff to say about the Classic games too. But at this point it be better off that I save that stuff for my own reviews that might happen in the future. Your reviews are pretty basic too, plus they are getting pretty old at this point, so there isn't too much point anyways now is there!)
P.S. You seem to really like the idea of taking an old game and modding the heck out of it! (Especially if its good) ...Why is that!? I just find that very strange! :O
hey , you're the guy from sonic stadium that showed me this channel
You're forgetting the most impressive ability ability Chaos 4 has where he can magically summon water in a place where there wasn't actually any in the cut scene before.
Josh if you do stop in 2016, please finish off with Sonic Adventure 2. Then your channel will be like Sega. Just please don't release 1 shitty video every year after.
