      Really hope you see this message. I'm glad all my late night gaming and PSO addiction back in the 90s didn't go wasted haha

      Holy crap, like, obviously I was _hoping_ you'd see it, but I didn't actually think it would happen! I couldn't remember the rest of our regular crew, but you were like my mentor in PSO! I'm pretty sure you taught me the Guild Card system, even, because I distinctly remember your name at the top of my list! I'm glad I got your RAmar's appearance right, too!
      I was an edgy teen at the time, so my first character was called "Shadow." I had a keybind to say "Chaos Control," and I'd always hit it when I went through warps.
      Let's see... I remember you were a bit older than the rest of us, like one time we were all disclosing our ages and you said, "Uh... sure, yes, I'm 12." I remember I had PSOv1 for like 10 days, until the community collectively convinced me to take it back and get v2 instead. But more than anything, I remember you (and your sister I assume, she commented too) being just the COOLEST, always taking the time to help me out and show me the ropes of a completely new style of game. For real: THANK YOU for everything!

    • @1lichfield
      @1lichfield 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1029

      Haha yes I remember you! I'm 36 now, I always knew you must of been an edgy teen haha Shadow and I remember your symbol chat. We did play with another girl and someone else but I can't remember their names.
      So bizarre how I just put your video on, I was agreeing with everything you was saying about Sega and especially the Dreamcast. I was a Sega fan my "home team" like you and I had a Saturn and needless to say was also laughed at!
      The strangest is probably my all time favourite and playing PSO with you and all the other random guys we met,really was the icing on the cake. Even the fear of being NOL'd when joining someone's party on PSO is a fond memory.
      I'm glad I met you and was able to take you under my wing and really help make PSO a great experience!

    This is like my 5th time watching this video, but I wish I could like it more than once. I was never a Sega fan, but growing up being somewhat poor, when they dropped in price my parents seized that opportunity to bring me home a new console for an amazing price. To this day it was the greatest experience I've had with a console. I enjoyed every game I had on it. It's the only console I still have from my childhood today, it survived our home being burned down and a couple moves. I love this console!

    I was 15 when the Dreamcast released in the US, I remember buying one along with Sonic Adventure and Street Fighter 3. I was blown away by the graphics, bigger games and online capabilities. I was a fan of Phantasy Star Online, spending so much time on that revolutionary game. I met a girl while playing (She was a bit younger than me), and we immediately became friends. Obviously, due to the shutdown of the servers, we went our own separate ways. But 6 years later I found her on Facebook, and she became my girlfriend. We're still together, and we still play on our Dreamcast. Thank you for this nostalgic video, I admit I teared up while watching

    • @shady_the_one

      Well damn. They did SegaNet and Online Play before Xbox, they did the four controller thing before Xbox and GameCube(PlayStation 2 never got around to it), the portable console games before the Switch, motion control before the Kinect, I mean damn. For them to come back now would be hard. I'm sure it's wanted by many, but it's just not feasible for Sega, a company that hasn't touched consoles since the Dreamcast in 2001, to return in 2019, two generations after it's Swansong, and compete with the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Trust me, I have been trying to brainstorm this all night. I have nothing. There is nothing Sega can do that Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft haven't already done...
      Of course, that could be the Anti-Sega Return argument. A pro Sega return could be:
      -It could finish what it started with the Dreamcast
      -Sega has the money to do so.
      -Competition is always good, and there is a hell of a stalemate going on here and now. The return of the Sega Dreamcast could mean a stimulation in the market
      -Nostalgia

      I wish I could remember the names of anybody I used to chat with in the NBA2K1/2K2 chatrooms.....to this day the Dreamcast NBA2Ks were the only versions that ever had that feature to be able to talk with people for as long as you liked before you started up a game, and you could actually choose to start up a game with whoever you wanted, these days it is forced to be random or they have to already be on your friends list. PSO2 really needs a western release. Gen 6 consoles really had the most going for them in terms of quality games, that's why we all remember Dreamcast, Gamecube, & PlayStation2 to this day. Although the PS2 probably had the worst hardware of the Gen6 Consoles in its initial release, where as Xbox was the most lacking in terms of games.

      Turk What is really interesting to me is how the hardware was implemented in the Xbox before the release of Xbox Live itself.
      I remember a relative of mine randomly got me an Xbox when I was a kid in 2001 right after its release and because of that, my Xbox didn’t have the “Xbox Live” option in the Xbox Start Menu, and it wasn’t only until I received a random disk in the mail with a
      free 2 weeks of Xbox Live that I discovered that little Ethernet adapter on the back.
      I swear to god I was like “what is this...” when I got that disk in the mail and it introduced me to online gaming. Soon after I got CS 1.6 on my PC and Halo 2 on my Xbox and I was hooked.

      ItsMeSonicCraft YT Go find one. I'm NOT a huge SEGA fan, and only came to know about DreamCast through a roommate long after it was dead. It really is an *outstanding* machine, and it's so unfortunate for SEGA, but also the gaming community at large, that it came along too little too late. If you're a bit of a SEGA fanboy, you really owe it to yourself to see for yourself. I own one today, and honestly, a lot of the properties hold up quite well. 2k football is still my first choice for video football.

    this.... is everything. I was 11 when Dreamcast came out and loved Sega. Prior to the Dreamcast I had a Genesis, Nomad and two 32x (but both were buggy af). I did enjoy NES and Mario games as well, but Sega always came first. I was really into Diablo 2 around the time Sega announced their shutdown, and neglected it because MvC2 and a few other games were still on for release.
    When I finally realized what had happened, I was very let down. I have not bought a new gaming system since the Dreamcast in '99. I got into CPS2 emulation and Blizzard games until the spark finally burned out and the gaming industry just wasn't what it once was that appealed to a g33k like me. Still, my Dreamcast has remained under my TV for almost 20yrs now, and I don't foresee that ever changing!

    Dreamcast was absolutely ahead of its time. It was a sixth generation console two years before the sixth generation. Had Sega not already been so hurt by previous blunders the Dreamcast would have been able to hold its own against the PS2 and GameCube (from a technical standpoint in much the same way the TG16/PC Engine compared to the Genesis and SNES). It would have been the underdog, but still competent, and we all know games make the system. It simply wasn't in the cards. Too much damage already done.

    Damn, I was not expecting myself to be THIS invested into this video as I got practically no history with the sega consoles at all (could have been the area I lived)But your story was so damn interesting to follow, this console was more ambitious than it could handle and with what you experienced with it, you should be happy you have that memory, never let go of that.Speaking of, that ending where you spoke about wanting to continue into the later sonic games, will shadow the hedgehog be one of the games you will adress?
    Personally if you do, I hope you won't be TOO harsh on it, it did some things well, but I also understand what it did to the sonic franchise.

      Shadow the Hedgehog was great, it was trying to market Sonic to adult players & it actually was an enjoyable darker spin on the Sonic Series with it's over the top edgyness. Playing it feels good these days considering how much of a joke the tone of Modern Sonic games is these days. Pontac & Graff never should have been hired to begin with, although Ian Flynn came up with a passable sequel plot for the game.

    It really came down to Sega of Japan being a full of themselves and not recognizing the opportunities they had in front of them. Sony and Sega were pursuing a joint venture but Sega of Japan cut it off because they wanted to use their own design for the saturn while Sega of America wanted to use the Sony hardware... that Sony simply launched on their own as the Playstation

    • @MicklowFilms
      @MicklowFilms 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They were already doing a joint venture. The Sega CD actually uses Sony hardware inside. The problem was Sony got greedy and they wanted to rights to the console so they could collect all the profits for themselves. That’s why Sega and Nintendo turned down the Sony deal.

    • @CardiacCat
      @CardiacCat 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Pretty sure that was Nintendo that had the deal with Sony. There was to be a SNES-CD add on and Sony was to do their own CD only system called the Sony Playstation. The Nintendo add on was going to make the Nintendo Playstation. Sega already had the Sega CD.

    • @lazarushernandez5827
      @lazarushernandez5827 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CardiacCat Yes, the Nintendo/Sony deal was better known as the collapse of it happened publicly at one of the big electronic shows (Sony announced they would be making the CD attachment one day with Nintendo announcing a different partnership the very next).
      Sega had worked with Sony on the software side with the Sega CD (Sony Imagesoft developed games for the Sega CD). Out of this relationship grew the interest in co-developing a next generation machine, with Sega of America initiating this contact. Sega of Japan stamped out these plans.

    • @lazarushernandez5827
      @lazarushernandez5827 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @YTCensorsMe Poop Hindsight, foresight, any sight would have helped Sega immensely back then.
      Sega actually had an arcade version of the Saturn, it was called the ST-V.
      Sega was among the pioneers when it came to 3D polygon graphics in arcade with Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter early in the 90s, and their next console should have taken this knowledge into account. Sony 'gambled' that the next gen would be 3d based for that very reason. Since they built it with 3D in mind from the start, it 'excelled' in that area, by comparison the Saturn was harder to extract its potential because it was meant to be a 2D powerhouse (which it definitely was) that augmented its 3D abilities after it had been in development for awhile. The N64 arrived later with better 3D abilities but hindered by the choice media cartridges.
      The crazy thing is Sega also had the opportunity to snag the hardware that became the N64.
      The N64 as we all know was cartridge based, which meant faster than CD loading times (if any), but at the cost of CDs benefits; CD Audio, FMV, greater storage capacity, lower price media (CDs costing pennies in bulk vs carts costing $30+ per unit) and quicker to reproduce media.
      Who knows what could have been if Sega had developed that piece of hardware using CD Rom as its media.

    • @lazarushernandez5827
      @lazarushernandez5827 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @YTCensorsMe Poop I agree that Sony had the perfect storm of events for them to succeed with the PS1(PSX to me ;) ).
      You cited them all; the hardware that Sega was pumping out as well as the software to support them(7, Nintendo sticking with cartridge which lost them Square and Final Fantasy 7(as well as a bunch of third parties leaving the fold), and to Sony's credit, they launched with a perfect price, a friendlier 3rd party arrangement, an easier to program for machine and Sony's budget behind it.
      But hindsight is 20/20 as they say.
      Sega launched the 32x for a couple of reasons:
      1st- was the CEO of Sega Japan was worried about the Atari Jaguar (of all things) taking market share in the western markets before their own proper next gen machine launched.
      2nd- while the Genesis was a complete success in western markets (thanks to SoA and Tom) it was 3rd place in Japan behind the Super Famicom and the PC-Engine; the home market was ready to move to 32 bit and was shutting down the 16-bit software pipeline. The 32x was an ill thought out measure to extend the Genesis lifespan and keep the userbase engaged (it ended up fracturing it even more). I bought one anyway :) .
      Things could have been very different for Sega if wasn't for a few choices made back then.

    Sega is finally profitable as a software company, right? So what if they went out on a limb, used some of that new found money, and built a $150 mini Dreamcast, with the new tweaks like HDMI and USB controllers and USB compatability. Only this time start with a limited production run. I think if all the people who swear by the mini NESs were presented with a (non mega drive) option for mini consoles, with 128 bit DreamCast graphics. And the system was built in small batches, according to demand for it (cutting both production overhead and superfluous units), would give the mini DC time to build a good reputation, via word of mouth, and allow Sega to reap a small profit allowing them to slowly expand on the units capabilities, especially online. This would, in turn, broaden a mini DCs audience, slowly bringing in more profits, and so on and so forth... New downloadable titles, some online capable, subsequent chat rooms, forums and new venues, and when these (all be it, slowly) expand the fan-base, and subsequent user base, lo and behold, enough money for another small batch of units. Let numbers from this batch linger, rely on word of mouth and online publicity, drop it's price to $99.99, on Nov 1st, to correspond with a calculated largest production run possible without losing any money on it, and also to correspond with Christmas that year. Now, Everything that has been done with the Mega Drive, to turn megadrive into a cash cow, combined with a marketing plan along the lines of the one I just described, coupled with the mini nostalgia console trend, could revive the Dreamcast and turn Sega a profit. Possibly even reviving the Sega name enough for us to someday see a HD graphics, DC2, with 4 bluetooth controllers, and a lithium ion polymer battery INTERNALLY, for portability, would blow everyone away. Sega writes incredible games. They wouldn't even need third party developers for launch, again cutting overhead. This would increase profitability. And a portable, PS4 calibur, completely wireless, internet ready system, with HD Sega Team software, would take the gaming world by storm...... Whaddya think???

      Assuming there are no hardware engineers left at SEGA since they only do software now, if they wanted to do this "right" that would mean they would have to take engineers away from software they are doing now and basically train them to "re-write" for lack of better term the architecture for the Dreamcast as close to what it was, which would basically be impossible to complete from Nov.1 to Christmas, they would have to intelligently work on this in secrecy for some time. then they would have to either train those same software engineers to be hardware engineers, or hire a new staff of hardware engineers to re-design a failed console that only realistically a small group of people will really care about, to be smaller, but still include features such as online. This would significantly raise any logical buying price to much higher than $100 and considering the only games they could feature are maybe 4 games some people heard a TH-camr talk about and 16 other (probably) games the same demographic the machine is marketed towards passed up without interest when the console released anyway, I highly doubt any word of mouth or marketing Kung-Fu would present a logical future for a Dreamcast mini, and certainly not one that would spark a success large enough for SEGA to hire a new engineering team, design a relevant, cost-effective machine that Publishers or even probably most witty developers would have a lot of trust in and somehow come up with a marketing budget that matches SONY alone. As much as I would donate certain body parts to have a DC2 it's just never going to happen unless they make some title that has sales matching that of Pokemon or Mario. As far as the Raspberry Pi micro DC I wouldn't try to market those to collectors, at least certainly not DC collectors. Most dreamers like myself are deep in the homebrew scene and can easily put retropi on a PI and put it in a 3d printed DC case without external help, so selling just that wouldn't be solving a problem which is how businesses actually make money. I would instead try to offer just the RetroPI in different system themed, or even custom cases, that way you could market to any collector who wants a RetroPI that looks like their favorite system, but doesn't have access to a 3D Printer. Hopefully there is no ill will recieved from this, just thought your idea was very interesting and this is what I came up with when I elaborated on what it may or may not actually take for your scenario to take place. Anyway good luck on the PI-biz I have seen people succeed with that model you just have to have razor sharp marketing so I would focus on things like Twitter or Tumblr or Pinterest where you can more publicly determine what a user is interested in. Also I hear Coleco is just handing out licenses left and right try contacting them you could probably use their logo... Keep Dreaming friends

    9/9/99 I remember getting the Dreamcast and could afford 3 games at the time. Being an arcade game fan I went with Marvel vs. Capcom , Soul Caliber and Sonic Adventure. Shit blew my mind how arcade perfect the games were with Soul Caliber being better than it's arcade counterpart and finally getting a true Sonic game in true 3D for the first time. Afterwards I bought the official arcade stick, a MadCatz gun, a VMU and the rest was history. I tried to collect every arcade port I could get my hands on: Zombie Revenge, Psychic Force 2012, Gun Bird 2, Sega Rally 2, Virtual On 2, Giga Wing 1 & 2, Power Stone 1 & 2, Dynamite Cop, Virtua Tennis, Crazy Taxi, Cannon Spike, House of the Dead 2, Confidential Mission, Ikaruga, Capcom vs. SNK 1 & 2, Dead or Alive 2, Fatal Fury Mark of the Wolves, Fighting Vipers 2, Guilty Gear X, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, King of Fighters 98-2002, Last Blade 2, MVC 2, Plasma Sword, Project Justice, Street Fighter III (All 3 of them), SFA3, Super Puzzle Fighter II X, Super Street Fighter 2 X, Tech Romancer, Virtua Fighter 3, Daytona USA. Can't forget Shenmue, Bangai-O and Grandia II. Then 2001 came. To me Shenmue II and Sonic Adventure II were the system's swan songs. Sega definitely went out with a bang with those two games if nothing else. Still have everything mentioned in good condition stashed away in a closet, they'll forever be apart of my greatest gaming memories.

    The Dreamcast has that Mega Man X helmet light-thingy on it. Just saying. Also, it's good to see how nostalgic and emotional you can get over games/a console. It can be sad to have a system that you really like start getting outdated or overshadowed. Let's never forget our old favorites! God bless you, and Miiverse forever. :)

    Honestly I grew up on the PS2 and have been a PlayStation fan my whole life. But even I will admit that the Dreamcast is one of if not the most groundbreaking console we’ve ever seen. Apart of me wishes I got a Dreamcast as a kid instead of a PS2. However the Dreamcast was already discontinued that holiday season when I got my PS2.

    I absolutely adored the Dreamcast. Easily my favorite console ever! Such a shame it died so soon, because it was actually a powerful little system that could have gone toe to toe with the PS2 if it had time to breathe. We never really got to see how much the console could do graphically.
    Sadly I think piracy didn't help the system either. After a gaming magazine shipped an issue with a free demo disc that accidentally contained a workaround for the anti piracy software, the flood gates were opened and games became easy as shit to copy.
    In the long run though, that actually might have helped keep the system alive way longer than it should have, because it had basically become an open source console. Anyone could make a game for it! New games are even still being made for it, although they are harder to find, obviously.
    It essentially became the peoples console.

      The piracy is what really killed it. None of the developers could make money.

      i loved my dreamcast. i remember being so amazed by soul calibur, skies of arcadia and code veronica. when code veronica later came out on ps2 i thought it looked like crap. it was so much more clear on the dreamcast. i never understood why they gave up on the dreamcast so quickly.

      Jack M they had to give up on it cause they were broke from there past failures. It actually sold pretty well. 10 million consoles in 18 months is actually pretty good! Sega killed themselves. 😞

    I said before and I'll say again, I'm at the very least grateful the SEGA is still around developing and publishing AWESOME titles!!
    "Valkyria Chronicles" and "Hatsune Miku: Project Diva" are some of my most recent favorite IPs!!

    Excellent video man. I remember waiting in line with my friends on the night of 9/9/99. I was 19 in college and pre-ordered that bad boy. The system was truly ahead of its time.

    Thank you soo much for this video. I grew up on Sega. I still have and love my dreamcast. This console was revolutionary remember ready to rumble, House of the Dead with the light guns, Power Stone 1 + 2, NBA 2K which I also played online at the time, I can go on. The fact that you mention there's an online community for the Dreamcast with a building library of games you can play online just blew me away. Just off this video alone you gained a new fan and again I thank you for this video. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

    Great video! I never knew I could feel so sad for a console's fate. When I was younger I bought a copy of Ecco the Dolphin Deffender of the Future for the Dreamcast before I even owned one, because I loved the Ecco games on Genesis. I spent so long looking for a DC as a kid but never saw them in stores, now I know why, guess I was a little late :( I eventually picked up the PS2 version of Ecco and loved the hell out of it, but after watching your video I've decided to find my old DC version of Ecco and snatch up a used DC from Ebay or something just to honor the memory of the Dreamcast! Again, great video! Keep up the awesome work :D

    The Sega Megadrive 2 (Sega Genesis) was my introduction to my favourite pastime activity. Soon after the Sega I played on the PlayStation one system and afterwards ascended to the PC maste race. Thank you Sega. Good grief that message on the smash pack gave me the feels :( what a wholesome read... :'(

      I always look at sales figures because the most-popular consoles will attract the exclusive games. When Dreamcast was retired it was in a distant fourth place (behind PS2, Xbox, GameCube). Also most DC games were already ported to GC or PS2 so you weren’t missing anything. Dreamcast has almost no genuine exclusives left
      .

    Sega Dreamcast was amazing, I am glad I decided to buy it when it came out. Seeing Shenmue screenshots in EGM sold me. It had a web browser, CD player, modem adapter, Light guns that actually worked. I was able to beat House of the Dead 2 with a light gun w/o using a continue. The first 3D Resident Evil game was created for it. It was bad ass kid. I forgot to add the DLC and game patches via the Internet. Some people will never know and that's sad it really was amazing at the time. PSO OMG I Loved PSO, to this day I have created a PC BlueBurst PSO Server so I can still play it. I still tweet to Sega to reboot PSO ep1 and ep2! RED RING RICO !!!!!!

    One hell of a love letter you made here. The Dreamcast deserves it. I think in retrospect the Dreamcast would have been seen as the WiiU of the Sega consoles if it weren't the last of the lineage. Or the Saturn of the Sega consoles...

    3/10 not enough Sonic Shuffle or Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. How do I know if you're a REAL Dreamcast fan if you can't tell me if Chao or Big is higher tier?
    Said my bit before, but I feel like it's always worth it to say thank you so much for this video and all of the time and effort you put in.

    • @GeekCritique
      @GeekCritique  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I seriously played Sonic Shuffle for more than two hours, because I'd forgotten that story mode requires you to get SEVEN Maginarystones per board, and once I realized how long it'd take I was in too deep. I have more footage of Shuffle than I do of Shenmue! Then I only ended up using that little piece of the intro near the end of the video.

    • @pyrrhickong
      @pyrrhickong 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I mean. That's entirely fair and I completely understand. As a Mario Party 3-8 Story Mode survivor, my heart weeps for you.
      ... fine. 4/10 not enough Jojo or Samba de Amigo, then.

    • @BladeBlur
      @BladeBlur 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, you don't HAVE to get all of them, just to win the board. Only problem is that when you lose you have to start everything from the beginning and Sonic Shuffle rounds last for a long time. It's a much slower paced game than Mario Party.
      As for Jojo. WRYYYYYYYYYY

    The Dreamcast was such a huge part of my childhood that I legitimately didn't know it sold poorly until I was an adult. All of my friends has one. We were obsessed with it. Soul Calibur, Power Stone 1 and 2, Phantasy Star Online, Alien Front Online, Crazy Taxi, Grandia 2, Worms Armageddon, and the list goes on and on. The Dreamcast was something special, and shame on the rest of the world for not seeing that in time.

    • @charoleawood
      @charoleawood 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That does my heart good. DOA2 isn't referenced nearly enough in conjunction with the Dreamcast. I first played the game at a demo kiosk in a Babbage's or EB games, can't remember, and it changed my life. I've always been a graphics whore and that's why I was interested in it but playing it there was an out of this world experience for me. It unlocked the understanding of 3D games from within myself. Before it I was unable to play games like Soul Calibur and Virtua Fighter, after it I understood. So beautiful, so easy to pick up and have fun.
