    My family struggled to afford the niceties during the 90's. Growing up in the UK, the master system was all we could afford. As such 8-bit sonic has a very special place in my heart.

    Trivia: the 8-bit version of Sonic 2 for the Master System and the Game Gear came before 16-bit Sonic 2 for the Genesis/Mega Drive because in 8-bit Sonic 2, Tails made his debut as a non-playable character. 8-bit Sonic 2 is Sonic 2, Part 1 and 16-bit Sonic 2 is Sonic 2, Part 2.

    If you really enjoyed Mean Bean Machine I recommend taking a dive in the Puyo Puyo series itself. You already know how to play, and navigating the menus in Japanese is mostly trial and error, with memorization when you figure everything out. Mean Bean machine is based off of the first game which is clunky in comparison to Puyo Puyo Tsu.

    Let it be known that I truly share your pain with the first boss in Sonic 2 GG.
    It wasn't until the GameCube port on Gems Collection, 15 years later that I finally got past that damn thing.

    • @GeekCritique
      @GeekCritique  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I remember beating it a time or two as a kid, but I still can't really beat it consistently. In fact, that footage may be the first time in the whole retrospective that I wasn't dying on purpose. Sonic 2 was a pack-in game, and that really put a damper on my excitement for my brand-new Game Gear.

    • @PiousMoltar
      @PiousMoltar 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My memories of that game are mainly failing at that boss, or occasionally, getting past it only to get a game over shortly afterwards. That game was a pain in the ass.

      @@GeekCritique The only way I ever got past the first world was by getting the stage select secret, which is by hitting start at the EXACT frame that Tails blinks on the title screen. Which is insanely hard to pull off and requires many system restarts.

    I now own a game gear and several games for it. And I will say that in my experience, it is not exactly the norm that game gear games are just zoomed in versions of master system games. Games like Wonderboy 3 and Vampire master of darkness actually redesign every level and the U.I to accomodate for the lower resolution, while Castle of Illusion runs in master system mode, causing it to have the same exact aspect ratio of the master system, but at a lower resolution making everything a little blurry.
    So it is quite unfortunate that the biggest sega franchise and the one that actually suffered the most from screen crunch, didn't actually attempted anything to accomodate for the lower resolution of the game gear, just zoomed in this fast paced platformer ala super mario bros deluxe.

    Loved this man! Game Gear was my first "console" (if you can call it that) first medium for playing games that I got when I was 5 or 6 for Christmas. With it came Sonic 1, Sonic 2, and Sonic Chaos. Sonic 1 was a great all around game and with some work I beat it and enjoyed it. Sonic Chaos was my favorite game for a long time. I played it all the time and loved beating it. Sonic 2...Sonic freakin 2. That was so hard for 5,6,7,8 year old me. I can't tell you how long it took to get passed the first boss. After a few years I was able to get to Scrambled Egg every now and then and then die. Didn't beat the game until 3 years ago as a Freshman in college. I love your videos especially Sonic since it was such a big part of my childhood. Keep em coming.

    You have no idea how refreshing to see someone who agrees with me that Sonic 1 is my favorite in the 8bit series, though I didn't think Sonic Blast to be that bad, I agree that Sonic Labyrinth didn't need to exists and I'm a huge Sonic fan who had very low standards as a kid.

  • @TheomanZero
    @TheomanZero 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wow, this was thorough. I had no idea most of these games even existed. I figured this would just be Spinball, 3D Blast, and the 8-bit games.
    The only 8-bit Sonic game I played as a child was Triple Trouble. I'd really like to see a Genesis port of that (and, to a lesser extent, the other 8-bit games). Maybe with a larger color palette and higher resolution, even Sonic Blast wouldn't be so bad.

    • @GeekCritique
      @GeekCritique  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, I already knew about all of these, and even I was surprised when I actually counted up how many games I'd need to cover. Triple Trouble would've been awesome on 16-bit...

I couldn't believe that I couldnt get past that first boss bug for the longest time and then sometimes pulling the cartridge out while it was still on only to see the lower extension of the boss that you wouldnt normally see, it was a neat find. I could never however get past Green hill zone iirc, that was the flatline for me.

    I'm a major Sonic Blast apologist. Sure it would have sucked to get Blast instead of Triple Trouble or one of the console Sonic games for a birthday or rented for a weekend, but having the benefit of hindsight - and a healthy dose of patience for a game that looked out of date when it was new - I really enjoy it. I actually like it more than the Master System Sonic 2, as a decent portion of that game frustrates me to no end, while Blast remains endearing, if simple.

    I'm an American gamer, and in some ways, I favor the slower platforming elements found in CD and Sonic 1 8 Bit than I do the faster games. Then again, I also played my Sonic games next to my shareware DOS platformers at that time, so I'd be doing Sonic 1 Genesis one second and Jill of the Jungle or Crystal Caves the next. Might be why.
    Not that I don't enjoy Sonic's speed when it's done well. I still hate the Wave Ocean boss, and Sonic Advance 2, while fun, and I love some of the stages like Music Plant, I hated the bosses. Who thought the running bosses were a good idea?
    After a while, I just gave up on ever getting all the Chaos Emeralds and forgot all about it, in lieu of Sonic Battle. That's still an oddball little Sonic game, but it was a fun way for me to pass many an hour, even if my builds were fairly predictable, and the fighting mechanics okay.
    But when I did finally play Sonic 1 on the Master System, I got a kick out of it. I really enjoyed the platforming mechanics, and I came away really liking Jungle Zone and Bridge Zone (of course.)
    It gave me respect for how some of the 8 bit releases of Genesis games were given a lot of thought and consideration for the conversions. Things like Ristar, and Shining Force. I thought both were treated fairly well.
    Sonic 2 8 Bit was okay, and yes, I once tried to play it on Game Gear. I beat it, with all emeralds, and am never going back to it again.

    i actually played the sonic patrol car in the arcades around early 2000's, both the japanese and english version (probably an asian release). i remember the english voice in the game was kinda deep, unlike what anybody would imagine sonic's voice to be like. i remember playing it, bumping the cars (i was around 6 back then) and hearing sonic go WHUUUUUUUUUUOOOOOOOOOOOOAHHH
    there are also other games i played similar to this, there's the wakuwaku marin, and then there's a certain game where a cat is the main star and it walks along the street, and then there's a dog which acts like the boss and you defeat it by shouting into the microphone

    First time I played Sonic Blast it was on a ROM. I actually thought it was a bootleg. I was shocked when it turned up in Sonic Mega Collection.

    Televisions in Europe also ran on 50hz, instead of the 60 we had in the U.S. so that also may support the reasoning for Europe’s enjoyment over the more slower paced platforming sonic games

    god, that boss at the end of under ground zone, at least I now understand why I could never beat him.
    this did remind me of a video game magazine my mom bought me one time not long after I got sonic 2 on game gear. it was a gamepro (I think??) and on one of the pages it said there was a code to unlock the stage select on sonic 2. finally, I thought, I could make it past that stupid boss and see what the rest of the game was like. it said the code was in a different section of the magazine on page whatever, but going to that page yielded no codes for anything. I searched the magazine, and scoured the part of the magazine that actually had codes, but couldn't find this code for sonic 2. seriously, I was beginning to think it was hidden in one of the margins to make it feel more rewarding to find, but not even my parents could find it. a while later I tried looking again (I decided to try sonic 2 again and I was a desperate child). after scrutinizing the magazine even further it turns out that blurb appeared in a preview for a different spinoff magazine. gamepro basically took the first few pages out of the first issue of this new magazine and just kinda put them into a issue of their main magazine. the page listed was for a completely different magazine that probably went out of print months ago. I always thought it was a mistake, but now I'm 80% certain they did it on purpose, though you think they'd edit for that sort of thing. anyway I never did look up the stage select code after the internet became available to me, maybe I should actually try and look for it.

    I was introduced to Sonic through a knockoff Master System here in Brazil, and I do prefer slower gameplay. I think this is why I didn't mind Unleashed too much, and I played the PS2 version!

    I absolutely love Sonic 1 on the Master System. Such an excellent little platformer with great music. 8-bit Sonic 2 can bite me though.
    Chaos was way too ridiculously short and easy for my taste with EXTREMELY short levels. Triple Trouble improves on the formula immensely. I still think Sonic 1 by Ancient is the best 8-bit Sonic game but Triple Trouble did the best job of emulating the Genesis experience.
    Sonic Blast doesn't deserve to exist.

    The first two 8-bit Sonic platformers were the only Sonic games I got to play as a kid. It took me over half a decade to beat them. Our Game Gear had to have it's power cord replaced at least once long before then.
    I remember the third act of Green Hills Zone in the second having some rather stupid level design. When I have to memorize minute background cloud details to avoid plummeting into lethal spike pits, something has gone wrong.
    12:50 EDIT: RIGHT ON THE FUCKING NOSE. THIS WAS WHY!

      I remember when I got it - visiting my brother at summer camp. I also recall shoving all the gum in my mouth at once, to the displeasure of my parents... hahaha...
      Never did have a Game Gear myself, sadly ... until years later - picked
      one up at a flea market along with Sonic 2 and Triple Trouble - sadly,
      one of the transistors went bad, and the screen - as a result - draws
      only a throwup of pixels on the screen. ~____~ Gotta get around to
      fixing it.

    • @GeekCritique
      @GeekCritique  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that's sadly a very common problem with Game Gears. But even when they were brand new, there was something very noticeably distinct about them. Like, I was playing one of the Game Gear games on Sonic Adventure DX the other day, and as the SEGA logo faded in, it reminded me of how the handheld would start buzzing when the screen lit up (probably poor shielding), and how it just had this faint electrical smell while in operation.
      Despite how it sounds though, I don't really consider those detriments. It's more just a result of the tech they were working with at the time. And it says a lot that all these years later, I remember that so specifically.
