    Your gal is a fine calligrapher. Poaching is from the French "to put into a bag or pocket". The white of the egg forms a pocket for the yolk, plus it means to put into a bag to steal.

    According to my mother, the preview they showed in theaters for The Lion King was just that first number, "The Circle of Life," and on the final "HUH" it cut to black and showed the release date. You know you've got a good movie (or just a good opener, if you're with Craig or Matt) when you can play it without any editing.

    • @chumon1992
      @chumon1992 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. I wasn't quite old enough to see it in theaters but I had other VHSs at the time that had that exact preview you speak of and it's literally flawless. Like, the lion king is already one of my favorite movies as it is, but what a magnificent opening scene...and the animation is just beautiful...definitely Disney's second golden age.

  • @njstuckey
    @njstuckey 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    YES! I've been hoping you guys would watch this movie one day! It's one of my favorites, for all the reasons you mentioned and many more. I especially agree with the pacing and quality of scenes, there is not a single extraneous moment in the movie.
    Fun fact, Basil Rathbone wasn't just talented, he was an Olympic-class fencer. The only swordsman in Hollywood who could match him was Tyrone Power, and their swordfight in The Legend of Zorro (th-cam.com/video/nB8tiSMCwRE/w-d-xo.html) is an absolute masterpiece. Rathbone was quoted as saying Power could "fence Errol Flynn into a hat."
    Also, the person who plays one of the elite archers in the contest (Elwen the Welshman) was not an actor. He was a man named Howard Hill, who was the most accomplished and talented archer of his time. He was the technical advisor for the movie and was the one who made the final iconic shot in the contest. For years, legend held that he actually made the shot as advertised, though many many people tried unsuccessfully to recreate it. It is now believed that he either fired into a bamboo arrow, or used a large-bladed arrow on a guidewire. He was the first white man to kill an elephant with a bow and arrow, and could pull a longbow with a draw weight of 172 lbs (which was not equalled for over 50 years). He holds one of the most unbreakable records in all of sports, winning 196 field archery tournaments in a row.
    My only disappointment in the episode is that ya'll didn't talk about the film score. It's ranked #11 greatest Film Score of all time by AFI, and the use of a symphonic film score for an action movie became the new standard for Hollywood. The composer, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, was even cited by John Williams as one of his biggest inspirations for the creation of the Star Wars film score. And this movie is still ranked in the top 50 on Rotten Tomatoes' list of greatest films.
    If you made it this far, congratulations! And watch this movie for real, it's not horribly long and it's just a great storybook adventure.

    Wow, this brought back memories. When I was but a wee lad, my farther gor the idea that we (my brothers and I), should watch some of the movies he had watched as a kid. The choice was between Robin Hood and The mutany on Bounty. We chose Robin Hood, and Errol Flynn stuck in my memory. I've based several RPG and novel characters on his portraial of Robin of Locksley. So thanks dad, RIP. And thanks Mr. Johnson for choosing the movie.

    Speaking of Errol Flynn, have you seen "My Favorite Year"? Does not have Flynn in it but Peter O'Toole plays a character inspired by him named Alan Swann, a drunkard has been actor of swashbucklers that is just so damned charming its impossible not to love him (or what to be him). Definitely one of my favorite films.

    The Best Years of Our Lives makes me cry like a baby every time I watch it. It's like "Remember My Forgotten Man" from the end of Gold Diggers of 1933 - it just really drives home the struggle and the tenacity and the power of humans who are asked to do so much for a country that gives them almost nothing in return, TO THIS DAY. But we do these things and we survive and try to overcome, and I just find it really beautiful.

    I was both amazed and shocked the last time I watched "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" to discover the movie actually doesn't contain a version of the famous archery tournament scene. I had always remembered that as being my favourite part. I must have been remembering the Disney version and somehow mentally pasted Costner's face over the fox's -- minus the English accent. Also, out of all the Robin Hood's I've seen portrayed, undoubtedly my favourite will always be Cary Elwes.

    Did you know? Tinker (used to be) like the N word for Irish people. At the time of this film's release, Tinker was a slurr being used against Irish immigrants to imply their low social standing, or to class them as "tinkerers" and cheap slave labour. (Not as valuable as a big strong Black dude) But its become MUCH less offensive over the years and is pretty much analogous to calling romani gypsies. (A term which they have embraced themselves.) Newspaper comics of the period even featured Irish "tinker" slaves being kept in on cages alongside black slaves. In the context of the film's period, however, Tinker really means a travelling tinsmith whom typically mends household utensils of countryfolk for a living. Though it is being used here in a historically accurate context- It is worth noting this example that even back in the 1930's, Hollywood was making moves to affect the public's subconscious via visual themes and choice diction. Divide and conquer means YOU! We the people are all brothers. :) haha thank you for reading this informative rant, if anyone did.

    Flynn was possibly one of THE handsomest men in film. You are perhaps not seeing him at his best here. The film score I agree is one of the absolute best all the way thru. It rushes, enhances and even carries scenes. Probably Korngold's best score. You guys usually DO talk about the music too. You definitely missed out on one of the all time best movie scores. By the way, De Havilland is entrancing in this role. Every turn of plot registers in her face and her actions. She is practically our window into much of what is going on. I really think you have underrated her importance and her talent in this one. Did I mention how beautiful she is here? Positively radiant,.. and full of grit. Any man would have fallen in love with her.

    Have either of you ever seen Court Jester with Danny Kaye? It is one of my very favorite movies, despite a slow start. It spoofs Robin Hood and other swashbuckling movies, such as the Scarlet Pimpernel. I loved this movie so much that in 6th grade I made myself a cassette tape recording of the audio, and I listened to those tapes until I had the script memorized. Thank you for a wonderful show. I've been watching since the first episode, and it is still one of my favorite TH-cam shows. Thanks again!

      I'm not the guys, but but funny you mention this-- I just watched The Court Jester the other night with my brother! He saw it when he was younger and loved it, and would go on and on about the 'vessel with the pestle' scene, so we finally watched it together, and I have to say, its a pretty fun movie. I recognized Basil Rathbone when I watched this WttB, and I was amazed at how long ago this was compared to the Court Jester. I guess in my mind they were at similar times, because of the technicolor aspect, I suppose. Danny Kaye is great, though I actually wished there were more songs in Jester, because I enjoyed the ones it did have. I hope they feature some Danny Kaye movies on this show sometime, he really was a talent.

    I think the reason why "The Lion King" was a big hit as a stage show is that it took a radically different approach from Disney's first and previous Broadway outing "Beauty and the Beast." While Beauty was more or less the film onstage, Lion felt very different due to the physical production, which was very much influenced by African culture.

I also happen to know that the weird-looking "bird lady" in this film was Una O'Connor, of The Bride of Frankenstein and The Invisible Man, both directed by James Whale, who apparently thought she was just hilarious. Having seen The Adventures of Robin Hood (FINALLY, considering its place in Cinema History), what about the Scarlet Pimpernel? Leslie Howard is perfectly serviceable in the lead, but it's Merle Oberon's smoldering interpretation of Lady Blakeney and Raymond Massey's Chauvelin that really steal the show from what is by all rights considered a rather okay adaptation of the novel.

    You joke about Errol Flynn harrassing Olivia off screen because of his many other behaviors(includong having two way mirror in his home), but apparently Olivia said in an interview that she and he literally fell in love while shooting this movie. The only reason they didnt take it further was because he was married at the time and she refused to consummate the relationship because of it, but she admitted that they did have an emotional and love affair.
    Also its funny that Matt said Marion's assistant/nurse/or whatever looks like a giant bird, because in the Disney robin hood shes played by a giant chicken. I say giant because shes almost bigger than the foxes lol

      I think Twins could be a great movie for the show actually.

    Matt, I disagree. I live in Madison and I've ordered the fish tacos at Great Dane. They were not so great.

    Maid Marian came up with the plan to save Robbin hood, I think her character is actually rather progressive.

    May I suggest you watch a film from Finland? Try Leningrad Cowboys Go America!

      I've never seen any Aki Kaurismäki films, would this be your recommendation to a first-timer?

    • @Diafotismos
      @Diafotismos 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, certainly if you are American. It takes place In the US mostly and there is a lot of live music. They speak English mainly, although they don't speak much. Jim Jarmusch makes a cameo appearance as a used car salesman. Very dry Finnish humor.

      I'm not american but it sounds good. Hopefully it'll be better than L.A. Without a Map - Aki Kaurismäki's brother's american film which wasn't really good.

      @Diafotismos 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want to try Aki Kaurismäki in his native country and entirely in Finnish, I recommend The Man Without A Past and Lights In The Dusk. Many of his later films have been more political than Leningrad Cowboys, which was such a success that it spawned two sequels, one of which is a concert film. Mika Kaurismäki is nowhere near as good as Aki.

    Swashbuckler was wonderfully calligraphic!
    It strikes me that this film was, or could have been somewhat like Romeo&Juliet with a mix of the New Testament (Revised, in which Jesus gets rescued by the Apostles (in the final reel))
