Warung in Malaysia is known as gerai. Eating nasi campur in Malaysia, it is recommended that you take some gravy to go with it and you should mix it together. Nasi taste bland but with gravy it will give interesting flavour to it. Some eateries will add a few gravies to give more interesting taste to the nasi.
Oh Dear, u guys first day experience seems not really smooth thou...😅 Anyway, recommend Morning breakfast such as Dim sum, Roti Canai, char kuey teow+Mee (Noodle), chinese soup noodles with good hot local coffee/Milk Tea. Lunch time try the chinese chicken/duck rice with the add in crispy porks meats, indian nasi bryani, or Nasi Lemak...etc. As for Night/Supper Time would be Ramli Burger, Satay, Roti canai with the nice Sup Kambing (Mutton Soup), Ikan Bakar... etc
I believe soy is a source of protein for vegetarians, they are usually made into soy drink, that soy pudding, tempeh, or any kind of tofu. So you guys should love the taste 😄

Actually petaling street is not like a street food tbh😂the foods there are so less.. for street food you should go to night market that usually open once/twice a week in some specific areas. All malaysian know where is it but not foreigners🥲 if there's a chance you guys will comeback, you can ask local here where are them!
I don't think mochi is "Malay" food. By the way Malay is an ethnic group, like Chinese or Indian. I think you were at Petaling Street which is KL's Chinatown. Almost all the foods there are Chinese foods. If you want to try Malay foods, go to Kampung Baru KL, and for Indian food... Well Indian (Mamak) restaurants are almost everywhere but Brickfields KL is where our Little India is.
that "mochi" is a traditional chinese snack. i guess the stall just call it mochi for easier explanation and to be frank, it is similar to mochi. for malays, a similar mochi snack would be buah melaka/onde-onde.
welcome to malaysia. we are still not fully recovered from the pandemic which nearly kill our economy. the two years of various lockdowns really took out many businesses. many shops are still not opened yet. please try kampung baru for malay foods and brickfields for indian cuisines. and stay away from durian. it just not meant for europeans.

@@marklehmann Ok...if you can include meat then there's definitely wayyyyy more choices and great food but still should be okay for vegetarian but less choice...you can try ordering the famous hawker food such as char kuey teow, mee goreng and request to remove meat (i think there's hardly meat to begin with but they have prawn etc) or you can try nasi kandar and just choose the vegetarian side dishes.... I do hope you find Malaysia a food haven even for vegetarians... :)

But Indonesia renamed the Bahasa Melayu to Bahasa Indonesia due to political reason. Because according to Indonesia, Malay is not A Race ( unlike Malaysia, The Malays are the Biggest Race) but the Malay in Indonesia are only one of the Ethnic groups. Hopefully you will understand.

@@marklehmann for me it gonna be hard for me to find vegetarian food in Malaysia.. because sometimes if it is fried veggies the ingredients will involve some dry shrimp or anchovies that already been pounded by mortar and pestle.. masak lemak labu also had anchovies.. always eat it with rice and with sambal ketuk (fresh green chili mix with anchovies sometimes and a bit of salt pounded with mortal and pestle) this is just one of another simple Malay dishes.. kampung style..

We don‘t eat meat which is why our options are limited, but we had nasi campur and some snacks which was awesome ☺️
