The #1 LOCAL FOOD in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 🇲🇾 | Nasi Lemak
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 3 ก.พ. 2024
- You already know I'm always searching for the best food in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. And if the locals are doing it, it must be good.
Today @Travelwithchris brought me to Wanjo in Kampung Bharu, and very popular restaurant in KL, to try my first ever Nasi Lemak. We were lucky to be joined by the true Malaysian Ambassador @TravelingSoloLogs who gave me some more info about how the locals enjoy their Nasi Lemak. Chris also got me a Milo, which was basically like chocolate milk lol.
The food was amazing and I'm stoked to say it was delicious! There are so many new Malaysian foods I need to try, but now I can say I love Nasi Lemak and will be having it whenever I'm in Kuala Lumpur!
If you're ever in KL's Kampung Bharu area, make sure you stop by Wanjo for the best Nasi Lemak you've ever had!

Thank you so much!!! My parents raised me to be polite very young, and it went a long way. But now in different countries and cultures I feel like I need to be careful and as respectful as possible because so much is forgetting to me.
Thanks for the nice comment!!!

Yes thats tempe, you are right! 👍
Wow that’s crazy!! But I get it, it was so bomb
We were in Malaysia for the holidays. The people and the food were fantastic. My only regret was that we could not stay longer. Enjoy Malaysia. Safe travels.
I feel the same exactly!! Thank you 🙏
I could literally live off of just Nasi Lemak 🤣🇲🇾 great video man!
Haha so bomb. Thanks brother! And thanks for taking me to try it for my first time! Fire 🔥!!!
Hey guys, there's an air-conditioned room there but you have to pay extra RM1 per person to get in.. Next time maybe you can try that 😅
@@coolriffs.got it! Nice tip thanks!

So honoured to heard it is one of your fav dishes in the world. Nasi lemak is so underrated not many in the world have heard of it
thank you for respecting the prayer calls. very thoughtfull of you guys
Chris had just explained that to me before we started recording! I had heard it before but glad I know now. It's amazing to me how much I don't know, but I love learning. Recently a muslim girl asked for a pic. I put my arm around her and learned later that I shouldn't do that. I try to be as respectful as possible but sometimes I feel so foreign. I'm learning!

Lots of respect. Nice brother

Incredible Malay culture and food. Best country I've ever travelled to.
Seriously so incredible! I’m amazed constantly!
The three Amigos in Malaysia enjoying Nasi Lemak, enjoy!!!!!
Hehe yep! My fist ever! So delicious! And these guys are so fun!
Kampung Baru is one of the last traditional Malay kampungs in KL abt 400 hectar. The value of these land abt USD2.5 bilion (RM13 bilion) very expensive bcoz located at prime area that is KLCC. The govt and developer never dare to develop this area due to too expensive and problem too many land owners inheritence since the last 200 years. One piece of land there ie 1 hectar might probably have 400 owners make difficult for Land Office to trace all these owners. Some more most of the owners refuse to sell it as to preserve Malay heritage in the heart of KL for generation to come to see kampung in KL.
Oh wow that’s crazy, and super interesting, but makes perfect sense! I need to explore there much more!
nah...it is going to end soon...the land will be sold off to the Chinese tycoon facilitated by the greedy politician....mark my words...
Yes Brad, not just Malay(Melayu) traditional house but most traditional house at South East Asia were built above the ground because of the flood and also to prevent wild venomous animals like snakes, centipedes etc. Recommend u try another Malay popular dish like Nasi Kerabu(blue rice), Nasi Dagang etc. The restaurant across Wanjo, Kak Som restaurant sell these dish 👌
Ahh! You're the first to answer that question about the raised houses, thank you!
And thanks for the suggestions! I'll go try for sure!
@@WhereisBrad No prob, looking forward watching your next video
the raised houses are common in villages and more rural areas. The home owners usually have large yards and kept a nice garden. You can find these homes in striking colors and some states have specific wood carvings and designs that sets them apart the other states. It's beautiful. Hope you can go to rural areas later@@WhereisBrad
@@mencot89 nice thank you! I hope to do some rural too!
The original Nasi Lemak is coconut rice, Anchovies sambal, cucumber & boiled eggs. Other than these are just toppings or modernised versions.
Ah okay gotcha! Thank you! There are so many variations, I want to try it all!
@@WhereisBrad You are lucky if you can find traditional streed food nasi lemak- it is wrapped in banana leaf. OR, you can go to this restaurant in Shopping Mall - BUNGKUS IT KAW2; they have nasi lemak wrapped with banana leaf

Oh wow that’s so cool! I really appreciate the support! Thanks so much! 🙏
You are right about "tempeh" (fermented soybeans) in the beginning of the vlog. Here in Malaysia, we like to slice it thin and fry it. Congratulations on your first try of nasi lemak which loosely translated means "fatty rice" bcoz the rice is cooked in coconut milk with lemongrass, galangal or ginger, pinch of salt and some throw in halba (fenugreek). The basic NL is rice, cucumber, sambal, boiled eggs, anchovy and fried gound peanuts. Over the years, it has evolved to include chicken/beef rendang (or fried), sotong (squid) and even prawns.
Oh nice! I appreciate the info! You’re making me want to try cooking it some time!! Video idea? No way it’ll turn out as good lol
@@WhereisBrad I think it would be awesome if you could vlog a cooking video. You can follow youtuber Che Nom, a cook on local cuisine on how to cook NL. I'll watch it!
Love your channel!!! Found it through Travel With Chris and subscribed.
Awesome! Thanks a bunch! Chris is so cool!
usually people eat regular nasi lemak thats a rice, anchovies, fried peanut, egg, sambal 'the red sauce' but when we have more money thats when we order with add on like fried chicken, curry, or a fish and beef with it
People have been telling me about fried chicken in the side! Good to know I’ll try it soon!
Great sharing. I love it as always. Thanks. 👍👍👍😍😍😍

Awesome nasi lemak. Good to see the three of you guys again. Thank you for this video. Chris is right, you can have nasi lemak anytime of the day.
Nice! Ya these guys are awesome! They've showed me so many 'firsts'. Do people also have Nasi Lemak as a midnight snack? Lol I feel like if I woke up hungry that would put me right back to sleep!
@@WhereisBradThat sounds great. 😀
@@WhereisBradI just want to share with you and Chris a little story of mine. Two decades ago, I have to endure harsh hardship and a very tight budget. A RM1 nasi lemak bungkus (wrapped in banana leaf) was all the meal I have for a day. It may sound irrelevant but the RM1 nasi lemak was my hero of the day, my savior throughout my hardship. C'est la vie. 😀
@@WhereisBradYes, you can definitely have nasi lemak for a midnight snack or meal. Nasi lemak is good anytime of the day, breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, supper. A nasi lemak bungkus (a basic nasi lemak wrapped in banana leaf) is a good for a snack, and a nasi lemak with side dishes like fried chicken or chicken rendang would be good for lunch or early dinner. 😀
@@Yasin_Affandi Wow that's intense. Hope I'm not prying, but has your situation improved? Hoping so!

Next time, you should try Laksa Sarawak - Anthony Bourdain's favourite. He came to Sarawak twice and ate laksa Sarawak at the same shop and he called it "The breakfast of the gods". You can try it in KL. Just hop to Dapur Sarawak Restaurant, the location just nearby tawakkal hospital.
People have been telling me about that! Awesome thanks for the recommendation!

Glad you enjoyed nasi lemak. The price of nasi lemak goes from Rm1 to Rm25. Rm1 is normally in rural areas and they are packed in banana leaves. Little parcels of happiness I call them.

Hey brad, tell chris there is a airconditioned area in wanjo.. its on the right side of the food aisle (from the entrance).. 😅😅
Oh okay will do! Thank you!!🙏 is that where you eat?
Mmm....looks yummy, Nasi Lemak seems to contain more protein and less carbs, ideal for anyone I suppose. Yes I remember Chris said that he could live with it. Good to see you all three.

you should come to kelantan, many cheap food and delicious😍should try nasi kerabu too🥰
People have been telling me to come there! It’s on my list! Nasi kerabu, first time hearing about it! I’ll sell it out, thank you!!🙏
Uguys should try Village Park Nasi Lemak, their fried chicken is so so good! 🤤
Oh okay! Thank you!
Keep up 👍🏼..Love rendang chicken 😊
Thank you! Mmmhmmm
Hey Brad! Love to see you try out the nasi lemak there. The food at wanjo is not so bad. The only problem there is the staff especially the one who's taking the food for you. Is it so hard to smile? Even if you can't speak english so well, just give them a smile. That's all. I work in f&b as well. It is really tiring but yea, work is work. Try to have fun at work and try to have fun while serving the customers. Don't spoil Malaysia's good name. Lain kali senyum ye kakak and adik kat wanjo tu. Kalau tak suka customer datang kedai awak, jangan kerja situ. Duduk belakang kat dapur basuh pinggan. Buat malu je muka tak reti nak senyum langsung. Peace ✌🏻✌🏻
Ya, I know what you mean, but I also try to appreciate them allowing me to film. I know it can be uncomfortable when someone walks up with a camera. Who knows. All I know is the food was amazing and I had a great first Nasi lemak! I will be having many many more🔥
Thanks for reaction nasi lemak Wan jo
No problem it was so delicious!!🤤
My fav is nasi lemak petaling....
That's the spicy one right?
You can also try the Neslo Ice drink. Very tasty.

@@WhereisBrad no problem, u'll slowly learn😅😅
Nasi Lemak is actually for breakfast & it is cover with banana leaves .
I've been seeing those banana leaves! Some say breakfast, some say all day! Not sure what to believe... but I know I could have it anytime! So delicious!
Chris, actually there is a aircon room at Wanjo, on the right hand side on the way in. It is comfortable there and they charge a little bit for the aircon, ha ha.😅
No way?! That's a good pro-tip! I was glad to enjoy my first Nasi Lemak surrounded by all the locals, but will consider the "cool" room next time! Thanks!
Hi Brad, glad that I can help.
Come visit Sabah on Borneo island if you have the chance. It is a rainforest paradise here if you like the nature.
you should start a nasi lemak tour in kl. there's a lot of nasi lemak stalls all over kl. 🤤🤤🤤
That would be awesome! After hearing about all the different versions I feel like I should make a video trying them all!
u must try paru (lungs) its super delicious mix with the nasi lemak
Whoa.🤯 I’m down to try anything!
WOWWWWWW DAYYUM
Hahahaa so good! 🤤
Nasi lemak Wanjo! Such an institution in Kampung Bharu.
I’m glad the guys introduced me to that place! It was so delicious!
Brad Solo and Chris, y'all are too nice. So much different than americans in the movies. Haha
Hahaha thanks a bunch!
in malay culture/practice, they dont use left hand to eat. only use right hand to use, either use spoon & fork, or use right hand.
I see. Do some people do the same but with opposite hands? I write with my left hand. So I’m curious if there are “lefties” who use left to eat, right for sanitary
The original nasi lemak is wrap in banana leaf and consisting in Cucumber egg bilis peanut and the sambal
Okay gotcha gotcha! I’ll look for those next time!
I think if you're not into spicy food, you should try Nasi Kerabu with smoked beef, it's so good. There's some noodles that worth trying too like Char Kuew Tiaw, either chinese or malay version.
Those all sound good. I've had and loved Kuew Tiaw. BUT, I actually LOVE spicy foods! Like extreme spice!
Try Tealive in Malaysia because we have Boba in a tea drink.
Just looked it up on Google Maps. There's a bunch! Okay I'll go check it out! Thanks!
so hungry brother to see nasi lemak the way u enjoy
Haha I got super hungry while editing! So delicious!
U should try squid sambal... i like it so much
I’ve heard about that! I’m a big seafood guy so that sounds amazing!🤩
Brad welcome to our malaysia country hopee you enjoying vac trip in malaysia
Thank you very much! I'm loving Malaysia so much! Where are you commenting from?
@@WhereisBrad i am staying and born in Negeri Sembilan ,Malaysia 🇲🇾😁
try nasi lemak city gardent bro..
Is that a restaurant?
When eating meals in Malaysia, use spoon on your right hand and fork on your left hand. Use the spoon to scoop your food. If you use fork, the food esp rice will be dripping back into the plate. The spoon also functions as knife. By the way, always wash your hands before and after meal. You'll find washbasins always available.
I see! I’m so used to how we do it in the west. Breaking that habit! And ya I’ve seen those sinks everywhere!
@@WhereisBrad there is always something new something different to learn. Life is a wonderful journey.
Back in the days, farmer use to eat nasi lemak in the morning and they need the energy to farm the whole day. typical nasi lemak has boiled egg, coconut rice, cucumber, fried peanut and sambal(spicy sos). You can also add ayam redang, squid and whole other stuff as additional. Originally Nasi lemak is wrap in banana leaf. Now days we just eat it all the time at every hour coz it is so good. haha... WANJO in kampung baru is famous because its a popular tourist spot. They are thousand small and delicious nasi lemak spot all over malaysia and some in my opinion is so much better then wanjo, and they are cheaper too. They usually open from 6am -11am in the morning only. At least the good ones hahaha. and YES that is TEMPEH..
That’s interesting and makes sense! I def need to try some other places! Thanks for all the info! Helps me learn!
Use spoon when u eat nasi(rice)..it much better than using fork..👍
lol I agree! My wife tells me that everything lol, but I grew up in the US and have been trained this way. I will break the habit!!
Hi,how r u? Which country u all?Nice to see your u tube channel.All the best! N good luck.🇲🇾🙏🌹❤️
I'm from California, USA. Thanks for stopping by, hope you stay 😁!!! Thanks a bunch!
If I'm super rich, I take a private jet for nasi lemak wan jo or village park. Guys, there is an air conditioning room in Wanjo.
In London, Normah, a Malaysian restaurant in Bayswater, the Nasi Lemak, is close to Wanjo ver.
Oh cool! I’ll have to keep and eye for that when I got to London!
Nasi lemak look yummy and dekicious
Sooo delicious!!🤤
When are you guys going back to the states?
Fork & spoon are the norm especially whenever you're eating rice dishes. If the meat is not easy to cut with a spoon we'll just pick it up and take a bite. That's how we roll :)
I think using my hand is the way to go! Next time :)
Hey brad and Chris u go to local restaurants try roti canai and also visit the Sabah in Malaysia
Okay thanks for the suggestion!!
When do you want to eat again or repeat “nasi lemak wanjo” you must try add a side dish bergedil (malay word) or perkedel is indonesian word for this patty. Bergedil are delicious fried potato patties with a meltingly soft middle that is a popular side dish in Malaysia, Indonesia , singapore and Brunei. Many reviews say it’s good there.
Oh good suggestion!!! I’ll try that next time!
You should visit Genting Highland before you go back😄, it's located on top of mountain of about 1800m+, and about 30 minutes driving distance from Kuala Lumpur.
That place looks awesome! I’ll go there for sure!!👍
Brad, when you decide to visit Sabah or Sarawak, I can connect you with my friends.
That would be awesome!! You (or they) can always hit me up on IG!
Greater KL encompassing KL and Selangor states pop abt 18 mil with 100 super modern super advanced. Pls xplore all
Interesting! I definitely plan to explore all over Malaysia! Loving every inch!
Nasi lemak, nasi means rice..lemak means milky ( refers to the coconut milk). And yes we eat nasi lemak breakfast, lunch, dinner and even supper 🤣🤣
For your info, they have a big area with air condition. You just have to pay extra rm1.
Authentic malay nasi lemak wil have: peanuts, cucumber, anchovies, nasi and sambal WRAPPED with banana leaves.
Next time I’ll eat in the AC and make sure I try it with peanuts!!
