My mom has watched Ghibli films with me, but I did get her to watch Maquia, turned to me during the emotionally pivotal moment at the end of the film and said “I hate you” with tears in her eyes. Still very proud of this moment lol
I randomly watched Maquia earlier this year. A definite tear-jerker. Great world building too that I wish was explored more but there's no other media for it as it was an original movie script.
Reminds me of when my brother and I were watching Clannad Afterstory. My mom walked by when Tomoyo talks to Ushio in the field of flowers, and she stopped and watched the scene and cried with us haha!
Hearing the words "Are all anime like this?" just pierces through the heart unlike anything else Edit: Holy smokes thanks for the likes! May you guys who experienced the tragedy rest in peace.
good work on him recommending hathaway tbh. It's the best in the UC timeline to recommend to normies, and i've held this belief since i first saw the film. It's what's gotten me to dive into the whole UC timeline after all. There are better stories in the timeline for sure, but as a standalone film it really works well, from pacing to production it's really something i can play on the telly while having a beer with my normie mates and I wouldnt be anxious whether theyre going to like it or not because im sure they will.
Blind Pick - Attack on Titan Shounen - Jujutsu Kaisen Psychological - Death Note Action - One Punch Man Drama - A Silent Voice Sci Fi - Psycho Pass Romance - Your Name Feel Good - Spy x Family For Dad - Vinland Saga For Mum - Wolf Children Wild Card - Baccano Isekai - Re Zero High School - Kaguya Sama Love is War Cute Girls - A Place Further Then The Universe Degeneracy - High School Of The Dead
I think they're both good, but if you're trying to get someone who's not into anime, into anime... Mushoku Tensei might not be a great starting point. Remember, these aren't Garnt's favorites in each genre, they're the anime that has the most appeal (which ends up just being the most popular, non-anime-BS-having show in that category cause those usually have the most fans for a reason).
@@DynamicAero I actually got into anime from chainsaw man and quit after redo of healer mushoku tensai kinda got me back in because it's a Isekai that's surprisingly good even with all the "fanservice"
Moment you said A Silent Voice, i got flashbacks to when I recommended the movie to my parents and my mom went "it's so horrible, the things that happened in the movie were so messed up". I was like, "yes, that's the point, but that's the beauty of it, learning and growing from the mistakes of it". She did not listen lol
I tried to get my parents to watch Tokyo Godfathers around christmas and we only got like 20 minutes in and they were like "This is way too serious" and then we shut it off. I don't begrudge them for it, but some folks just get too overwhelmed by uncomfortable subject matter, I think.
@@SpaceWizardCosplay I think it's by Caitlin Myers (I could be wrong). You can also just search "never gonna give you up japanese cover" that's how i found it. She also does a cover of "September" as well.
I'm not sure I agree with his choices though. I, personally, would want to see the best of the best anime. Bar no holds. You only get one shot. Do not miss your chance. Etc.
My dad was older (just passed at 85) and he mostly watched anime with me just because I commandeered the tv. His 3 favorites were "Gunslinger Girl", "Spirited Away", and "Nana". No consistency but damn good taste.
@@Lethal205more like, they put the juiciest stuff in the first season. Which is pretty decent. Manga does stretches things quite a bit and the anime focuses on the "progress"
I would rather recommends Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai. This series is also my starter romance anime years ago when it aired. Quite enjoyable if you like a dialog heavy show.
Easily one of the easiest animes to get into for a veteran or a new person in the scene or someone who is skeptic towards anime has to be Vinland Saga. It's easy to understand, has a coherent story, nice animations, a historical inspired story so it's pretty good with it's world building and the characters will grab you quite fast and change overtime very nicely.
You would think so. I recommended VS to another person who is familiar with anime but still more in the normie side and he dropped it after the second episode as he found it boring. VS i think would be more suited for people with more emotional intelligence and more interested in the exploration of complex themes rather then just be entertained
It really depends on how brain dead the normies are when it comes to recommending vinland saga. If they only watch Marvel or bland action movies, then vinland saga is hard to recommend
I disagree, I didn't even watched it, but still... just by the talk the second season made, I can say it isn't the easiest thing to recommend someone, and this talk usually I think is kinda pointless, since it highly vary from person to person, like you wouldn't recommend something with action to someone who doesn't like action...
I would recommend it to people who aren't into anime but are into "good" movies/shows/books in general. That said in my experience that kind of people would have at least watched at least a few anime to some degree anyway so it's more of "getting deep" pick rather than first pick.
@@LM-pe3kc if they don't like gore yeah maybe not, but everyone i've shown AOT who doesn't watch anime loved it! i mean there's so much more to it than gore
A Silent Voice is an excellent movie. It is such an excellent movie that I find it hard to convince people to read the manga, which believe it or not, is even better. Not because Kyoto did a bad job in any way, but because they had the thankless job of adapting 64 chapters into a two hour long movie, and they pulled it off far better than I could have imagined. But I would still suggest people who are into reading manga to give this one a go, even though you have watched the movie.
A Silent Voice is not only perfect, but it is also special to me. I cannot bring myself to give it a rating of 10/10 because that would be assigning it a number, and I feel like I'd be disrespecting the movie by quantifying what it means to me. A mere number won't do justice to properly explain its significance to me. 😅 Yes, it really is that special to me, haha. I've heard that the manga is supposedly better than the movie, but every time I hear people say this, they also put down the movie by calling it bad in an attempt to promote the manga. I, obviously, didn't appreciate them trashing my beloved anime. I thought anyone who didn't see the movie for the beautiful experience that it is, as I did, was just stupid. This made me automatically dismiss their sentiment about the manga being better. However, you praised the movie and convinced me that the manga could be even better. Thank you for that. I will read the manga. 👍
@@AzA609 you are welcome. Happy reading. Reading the manga in no way reduced my enjoyment of the movie. I have rewatched the movie and reread the manga multiple times, and enjoyed it each time. I guess it's because even though KyoAni had to scrap some plot points, they understood the characters and the atmosphere of the story really well. The core message of the story was just as powerful in both media. In manga you just get more of it, (and a bit more closure). I guess that is the reason I picked up the manga in the first place. I liked the movie so much that I wanted more of it. Usually in similar situations, I have to settle with different stories with some similar elements, but it just so happened that this particular story had a manga which wasn't fully adapted in the movie.
@@uddaloknag1751 I didn't realise how much longer the manga is. I just assumed it was the same length as the movie because I didn't look into it, but now I will read it. I usually avoid going back to experience a story that I consider to be a masterpiece, so I never rewatch a good movie, show, or video game because they take a lot of energy for me to savour, so I only focus on spending my energy on newer experiences. It has been a long time since I last experienced A Silent Voice, so I am ready for the manga.
@@AzA609 interesting. Personally I like going back to media I love. Usually after a long time. Most times I find I get a greater appreciation for the story after the rewatch. But I do get the other perspective too.
Personally I introduced my mom to anime using Arcane since it’s got some of the "codes" of an action anime while still being close to a regular live action show - you know, so that she could slowly get used to it - and then I watched Cyberpunk with her. Oh and I once caught my dad watching Food Wars in the living room, so I guess my family was pretty easy to convert.
Fma brotherhood is good for AFTER the person is hooked on anime, not when the person has not seen any anime at all and gets bombareded with 60 episodes
@@alphakowaclips I think it depends on the person. If they don't like slow paced shows in general then yeah maybe, but if they are comfortable with it (which surprising amount of people do) then it's a really good recommendation. Also I personally believe that fmab has ever had an episode or a arc that feels slow. If you look back at it yeah the pacing is on the slower side but when you're watching it doesn't feel too slow.
@@johnpaul5241 Except that it isn't. People are watching shit like The Walking Dead, swarm of same generic CSI and Medical drama like shows and a bunch of others that are having 5+ seasons. And the amount of content and themes that FMAB has in just about 2 seasons of time of regular tv shows is superior to 80% of shows.
@@alphakowaclipsI actually feel it is better to get someone to watch the slow burners first before watching any 12-24 episode anime, because they will become a lot more impatient after and not be able to appreciate the slow burners as well
Violet Evergarden is such a perfect pick for this list. It honestly couldn't be any more accessible to viewers who are wary of anime. It's only one season and there's no filler, meaning there's no huge time commitment. It's KyoAni so everything looks gorgeous. The music is stellar. And best of all, it's one of the very, VERY few anime that (sans Cattleya) has zero cringe-inducing horny shit.
Yeah. Why couldn't have they just made it a friendship dude!!! YOU DON'T ROMANCE ADULTS WITH MINORS!!! ever since that realisation, I've always been so weird about watching it again.
not sure if my dad got into anime, but last year when I was visiting my parents I put on Vinland Saga wanting to rewatch it, he saw like an episode or something with me, but when I woke up next morning and I saw him watching it by himself I was super surprised. We watched it together and he was disappointed when it ended cuz 24 eps wasn't enough. Can recommend VS for all the dads out there.
@@bliss6417 Idk maybe I cry easier than others, but it got me most of the episodes. Theres also a bunch of anime that made me cry, but none did it like Violet Evergarden (maybe To Your Eternity season 1 came close). Didnt help that I watched it all in one sitting. Pretty sure there was only 2 episodes I didnt cry. I remember thinking "finally, a fucking break".
@@split_head_776 To your eternity was rough, I believe I also kinda sobbed at the end of assassination classroom but violet evergarden had me on the brink of crying out throughout the binge, the movie broke me good at the end.
@@bliss6417 Yea the movie was a roller coaster. Shame that was the end, I wanted it to keep going just to see more of Violet's story. For sure my favorite romance/drama? It didnt really have a genre, just a beautiful story.
Your list is so spot-on!! I love your emphasis on keeping "anime bullshit" to a minumum when recommending shows to newcomers. Some shows are awesome, but they really shouldn't be entry points because anime bullshit can be really off-putting (even for seasoned fans).
That is the best point in this video. My uncle likes the few Gibli films he's seen, but hates the idea of anime, the anime bullshit and whiny voices when I watch it. I had him eventually watch the pilot of Cowboy Bebop, which he enjoyed, but getting him to watch anything is very difficult.
I recommended Kaguya-Sama (one of my favorite manga) to my mom as her first anime. We've been watching it together and just finished season 3. She loves it
My recommendation I always send to my newer anime friends is Kaguya Sama, but specifically the dub. Because it keeps the heart of the show but is easier to consume as its in their home language. Also Sinclair knocks it out of the park and sets unrealistic expectations for dubs. It's also for the fact that it overexplains itself perfectly especially with japanese history and games.
@@Kuro_konI mean don’t get me wrong the later seasons are decent, but first season is just a perfectly self-contained arch. I watched all phycho pass but I would only recommend S1
@@mysmallnoman it's 24 episodes long season, enough to tell a full story. That’s why you could recommend it. This show also has 5 or 6 movies, all pretty good.
I would highly recommend the "my life as inukai-san's dog" anime. Its a general good all rounder series, something to really sit down with friends and family alike to enjoy ya know?
I think something like Megalobox is the perfect anime for a dad, more mature, still introducing them to the more anime kinda things like the side kick kids & sci-fi mechanical boxing stuff... But the themes and episode 1 cliffhanger will for sure get them to episode 2 and the rest I think... While season 2 can also immediately surprise them with the dramatic mature themes
No lie, I read that recommendation and was wondering why you were telling people to watch Medaka Box cause that show is just distilled anime bullshit and then I saw the scifi stuff and it just clicked that I was thinking of the wrong show.
Dude, I love this editor so much for the song he used to introduce the wildcard section. I was jamming so hard and then got hit with nostalgia the second I realized that it was The Pillows playing. holy shit
@@end8978 absolutely! Easy to consume and follow without any prior knowledge of Japanese culture. It's just a smooth pair of series that anyone could follow.
ngl this is probably the best list of its kind out there cause it has something for everybody as well and going for the more serious stuff instead of the fluff stuff that every genre has that's popular but not necessarily quality enough to hook newer fans.
As someone who's recently been getting into anime, this is nice. Love Spy x Family with all my heart, it really is a show you can watch anytime, it's just so heartwarming. I watched Wolf Children quite some time ago, but thoroughly enjoyed it, also... 22:37 -> props for using Ace Attorney music :)
Jujutsu Kaisen is the best recommendation for anyone who has never watched anime and needs fast passed and hard hitting action to keep them hooked and eventually getting them invested in the story...
I could not stay awake during the first few episodes for some reason and then the latter episodes were in a training arc with no stakes which i just had to skip
@@tonnyjaxhiga3872 I was not tired. I wondered if the problem was that I didn't like shounen anymore but then i watched demon slayer and I liked it so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@LuisSierra42 I feel ya… same thing is happening right now with me for Vinland saga. Sometimes you just put things on the plan to watch list for way to long, but once the ball starts rolling it rolls
I got my friend into anime by using his love of sports against him. "One Outs" did the trick. Such a great pick since it has the sports and the drama, and just enough of the anime BS to introduce you to the idea, without it being over the top or pulling a first timer out of the story. That friend got so deep into anime over the last 3 years, he watches all the isekai as they release, just like me. Brings a tear to my eye, I'm so proud.
Corpse party... yeah the bucket with censored content in it and it's speaks... :D And i thought the Terraformars would be the most fucked up recommendation... :D
It's weirdly an odd yet good recommendation lmao Sometimes you don't have to play safe and just straight up use the "weird japan" card and it's proven many times quite effective
for a romance anime, i always ALWAYS recommend 'from me to you' i just think it's the sweetest show ever made and yeah, sure, it's very slow BUT!!! i never really got bored because of how much it focuses on sawako's friendships and growing confidence as well as the romance
Idk how no one I’ve seen has mentioned Horimiya for romance. Easily the sweetest and most grounded show I’ve seen about high school romance. For something non-high school I also really loved Wotakoi. 11/10 recommendation for “A Place Further Than the Universe” though. Easily in my very short list of 10/10 shows and it’d be easy for even non anime fans to get into.
Attack on Titan was legit my first starter anime as a teen besides watching DBZ, Pokémon, Digimon, and Yu-Gi-Oh as a kid. I first watched it in English on Netflix and loved it. It was also my first anime that I watched subbed. It got me into other anime because at the time, in 2015, AOT had no second season
@@LuisSierra42 for me it was season 2 where i truely got hyped and could not stop watching. Final season had me the most hyped ive even been watching anime
I think easiest way to get someone to watch an anime is to pick one that is available on a platfrom they are regular viewers of. Comedian Bill Burr watched One-Punch Man, because it was promoted on Netflix at the time and he enjoyed it big times, despite having no prior knowledge about anime. So good criterias for first anime should be: - Availability on popular streaming services - Good Dub - Easy to digest themes without in jokes
I love how consistently Bill Burr proves that most people hate things because they haven't experienced them. He used to hate Star Wars because he thought it was stupid. Then he was cast in a Star Wars show and the people behind it changed his mind.
I live with two roommates and I got them hooked after showing them three newer shows on Netflix. Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Castlevania, and Arcane. They are all limited series with a great first episode, good animation, a love story, and most importantly, quick/great character development. Once they got hooked onto a character it was over. Those three are my picks for first time watchers.
@@ApolloPlanetary For some people a good segway is just shows that are animated, and not the 3d disney kind. I had a friend that would call me weeb as soon as i mentioned anything close to anime. I showed him Arcane, then Castlevania then Tokyo Revengers and he was hooked. He is currently going through ALL of One Piece, Naruto AND Bleach at the same time.
@@ouwle6618 I can be a real nitpick sometimes but I have no problem with that. Hell, I would say Arcane is more like anime than most Ghibli films. And don't get me wrong, I have three Ghibli films in my top 10 all time favorite films ever but they are not representative of the wider world of anime IMO. I mean can you imagine the culture shock of someone going from Spirited Away as an introduction to anime to Kill la Kill?
OPM got me into Anime and its animation ist just insane. Sadly S2 was a bit of a let down, but if they keep their animations close to the manga, the next seasons are going to be crazy.
I'd argue that Moriarty the Patriot is also great for beginners. It features characters many are already familiar with, which make it way easier to get into than a show like Death Note.
Promised Neverland season 1 is the best blind pick anime imo it has one of the best first episode hooks and the camera direction is really good and it's constantly tense while the plot unravels
@@etlanime actually I think it being a poor version of a mafia show works in favour for beginners. It's far more compact and focused. I understand that maybe it didn't spend enough time to expand and elaborate on their mafia world, but I think that works in favour of people like me who aren't too invested in finding out exactly how they run their businesses, build rivalries and circumvent laws etc. It's extremely focused on the protagonist's revenge and that's fine to me. I'm not a fan of mafia shows like The Godfather but I absolutely love 91 Days.
My dad is 60+, very into traditional media, has never watched anime before and hardly anything animated for adults either. He watched the entire first season of One Punch Man (this was before s2) entirely on his own accord, seemlingy from nowhere. He was browsing Netflix and thought it looked interesting. He really enjoyed it too! imagine my shock when I walked into the living room and found him watching it. He hasn't watched any other anime since, and I doubt he will, but to me it is such a good testament of how good of a show it really is.
Tbh I feel like Kimi Ni Todoke is the better entry-level romance, while still being one of the best romances if not THE best as of today. People that aren't into the genre kind of forgot of 2000s and early 2010s romances but they were SO GOOD (especially the former's) and Kimi Ni Todoke was just... God, when the announcement for the 3rd season got out, I just couldn't help smiling for a full week. For "for mum" I'd ALSO go with "Maquia", so good, beautiful tale of motherhood, just a different type of, I'd recommend them both in such a category, but I'm glad he at least got it as a backup title. ALSO!!! One important category is missing: spokon. And that spot goes to Haikyuu!! hands down. Perfect for a newbie, and still one of the best sports series ever created while also being not just about sports. Such an incredible series.
I had no idea Kimi ni Todoke was getting a third season until now. First watched it like 8 years ago and it always stood out as one of the better romance anime I watched. Definitely rewatching the entire thing when it's released.
As a youth worker, and someone who's been up to my elbows in anime/videogame culture for at least 30 years, I've spent a lot of time explaining the culture to people who aren't familiar with it, not just parents of young people, but even those in generations above my own who are in their 60's and 70's these days. There's a few I generally recommend to folks new to the genre, and its like you said, it depends on their tastes. One rule though, no highschool stuff. Most of these people don't want to see that, unless they want to know their teenage child is watching. For the more action-centred anime, I generally recommend Black Lagoon, its real-world setting and no superpowers means people unfamiliar with anime can relate it back to action tv/movies with just enough smart writing to keep them hooked. For the more feel-good stuff, I tend to recommend Watanabe's Carole & Tuesday, especially if they're familiar with shows like American Idol, have a disdain for modern mainstream music (which is most older audiences), and has a lot of themes going on in the background that a lot of uninitiated audiences can relate to, such as politics and issues within society. Its also a good way to transition them into more mainstream anime, as its set in the same universe as Cowboy Bebop. For those old enough to actually know who Alfred Hitchcock is, I tend to recommend Perfect Blue. Its a psychological thriller that is very much in the same vein as the old Alfred Hitchcock movies of old. Lastly, Hajime no Ippo. While the anime hasn't kept up with the manga, anything that's still going after 30 years is going to get the attention of older audiences and sports fans alike. Exploring the mechanics of the human body like anime does has big appeal to sports nuts, as well as that most of these people know what Rocky is, they can make that connection of the underdog rising through the ranks by boxing (with just the slightest touch of romance that they had often seen with Hong Kong cinema) is something uninitiated audiences tend to really relate to.
I’ve recommended Psycho Pass and Vinland Saga since the plot was good and more relatable to what family or friends watch. I also recommend season 1 of Promised Neverland. If a family member enjoys a little fantasy comedy then My Uncle From Another World might be a good pick.
Back in the day I watched Vampire Hunter D, Akira and Robot Carnival on SciFi channel with my mom. Usually it was on Saturday early mornings but we caught a few on a weekday evenings. She loved it. My mom loved story telling and I think she appreciated the uniqueness of those three. Our normal watch was Masterpiece Mystery since I was little and she read Redwall and LOTR to us annually so my sister and I were used to death and violence in story telling. As I look back my mom was amazing and I miss her dearly. I makes me happy to see Garnt with his mom.
The Promised Neverland was my parents' first anime, I chose it because of the fast hook. Their second anime and first shonen is Hunter x Hunter. I've seen 40 eps with them now, and my Dad loves it. He says Leorio is his favorite character
I thought of it too. But A Silent Voice seems like the perfect choice to me. And I think movies are a better sell for non-anime fans. It feels like comitting less than with a series.
The only problem for this pick is that people might be uninterested by an anime revolving around Shogi, something that is not known by most people outside of East Asia. It's a major anti-hook element. Heck even Garnt hasn't even watched it right?
@@zeroyuki92 yes shogi is one of the main plot drivers, but you absolutely don't need to know anything about it to understand the anime, you won't really even miss out on anything. You come to understand the basics very quickly through the story, and the way they tell what's happening through the characters is written in a way that you understand if a move was good or not without understanding the move itself, and even then shogi is just the plot driver, the main thing about the anime are the characters and the interactions between them
Alright. Here is an isekai that does NOT have any boobs, pantie shots and Harem shit. The Saga of Tanya the evil. In my opinion one of the BEST animes ever.
Your list is pretty damn good, I would've picked AoT, JJK, Spy x Family, etc. I'm surprised to see Psycho-Pass on a major list it's so good and so underrated. I loved that show.
I remember my father, who never got into anime, had a liking for the Noir anime because it was a thriller with skilled assassins (them being female is a plus). I had a VHS tape with the show recorded from its airing on TV when my dad caught it and placed it into DvDs as a birthday gift. Edit: had because he never had the time to watch it fully, so I safeguarded the DvDs.
Blind pick: Attack on Titan. Damn near a perfect entry point. Shounen: FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood (my personal favorite anime series). A 10/10 series in every aspect. Story, characters, production, you name it, along with a fantastic english dub. Also, no anime BS, which is pretty rare for a shounen. Psychological: Death Note. No explaination needed. Drama: Violet Evergarden. A true human story, one of the most empathetic pieces of fiction I've ever experienced. Also pretty short. Action: Vivy Fluorite Eye's Song. Short, sweet, and hard-hitting, with a lil' sci-fi twist. Sci-Fi: Cowboy Bebop. Episodic storytelling at its finest. Romance: Fruits Basket 2019. Bit more dramatic than your typical anime romance, but nontheless incredible. Also, if it was finished, then Bloom into You (please read the manga). Family pack: Spy x Family. If holiday vibes were an anime. High school: Kaguya-Sama: Love is War. A somewhat realistic high-school anime that makes you smile/laugh like an idiot and breaks your heart in equal measure, sometimes within the same episode. Also, its english dub? Perfection. Wild pick: Death Parade. Underrated AF. Isekai: None. Stay the fuck away.
Sad to see Fruits Basket(or shojo in general tbh) not get any love here. I feel like it would fit much better in the romance category than Your Name and is probably tied with Ouran High School Host Club as the most common first anime among my friends. Def happy with most of the picks, though!
Yes, like I thought shojou was going to be mislabeled as romance which doesn't bother me much as long as people give it a try. But seeing shonen and action as 2 categories while shojou swept under the rug made me enjoy the list a bit less... I liked Garnt's picks.. But Fruits Basket is such a good character drama
86 is the show I recommend to people who haven’t seen a lot of anime, and Your lie in April is typically the one I tell people to watch if they haven’t seen any anime before. It depends on the person, of course, but 86 is devoid of anime BS entirely. It’s genuinely a masterpiece and has every aspect of a show that someone would like. Your lie in April, to me, is very emotional and causes you to reflect, which is what I’d want people to do if they haven’t ever watched anime before.
@@maestromarat6195 86 has some of the best payoffs in a show I’ve ever seen, how is that falling off? I think the second cour is definitely worse than the first, but it’s still a solid 9/10 for me
Your Lie in April was my first anime, and it absolutely worked. It has the benefits of a good dub and it is (was?) on Netflix when I watched it. For music lovers it sucks you in.
@@maestromarat6195 gundam fan here, all's i gotta say about this is yuck. i've seen this ibo 86 comparison everywhere and honestly i dont see it. Yes they both have politics, war and drama and mechs, but 86 is more modern, its faster, the split between the 2 main characters and how the show that split on screen and on each episode, the unique editing and storyboarding techniques on 86, i mean sometimes you think the episode's over but it's only halfway done and its going to show the other half of the same story, i find these ideas well executed and unique and makes it stand out among the rest that ibo doesnt even come close. AND IM A GUNDAM FAN, but i seriously dont see it. Especially recommending ibo over 86 to a newbie? I dont get it, it feels like ibo fans have this "responsibility" to recommend the show even if their recommendation makes no sense. I do understand, as a gundam fan, its hard to sell gundam, but no, stop forcing it, i beg you. Let 86 have its moment, let 86 fans celebrate it and recommend it, its a good show, and ibo doesnt belong in this discussion. (I feel like ibo fans are fans of the show because when it came out, there's no other mecha show at the time and they liked it so much they latched onto it like its the only thing out there. Its absolutely not.)
My dad is super into art, fishing, hunting, woodcraft and our native customs *showed him Princess Mononoke n Kikis* My mother is super into drama and themes of familial and romantic love *Showed her Maquia and Your Name* On the plus side it worked, on the downside every sunday night has become anime movie night; Turns out they actually grew up on Miazaki's Heidi show and Gundam so they already came preinstalled with anime cringe resistors and an appetite for it.
my favorite anime is Ping Pong the Animation, honestly i think it's a really good thing to recommend to non-anime fans because it is so outside the norm of what anime is while still hitting so many relatable plot beats that are nearly universal to the human experience. i feel like the only barrier with Ping Pong is the way it looks being kinda odd and that the subversion of common anime tropes may be lost on someone who doesn't know them. :)
I feel like a category that i would put is also "reflexive", that anime that you can vibe with and their themes are so compelling and beautiful that you constantly think about them, and none other anime fits that category for me than Mushishi. I showed Mushishi to my mother (keep in mind i also hadn't watched it at that time) and the vibes were something that i don't see ANY anime do. Yeah it's episodical, but every story is memorable, and the fact that it's told in such a calm and relaxing way, it's a breath of fresh air when most of what anime fans like about the medium is flashy colors and character fight goes zoom (and most of the more popular anime fits in these categories). Mushishi is unforgetable, man. And also has 0 anime bullshit! Both me and my mother loved the anime to pieces
Loved your picks! It's clear that you put a lot of thought into it and we appreciate that a ton. So as a follow up, how about a video about; "Hidden gem animes" or most underrated for a couple of genres?
The three animes I always recommend are Attack on Titan, Hitori Bocchi, and Gotobun no Hanayome. Any time I’ve recommended these three to a friend one of these shows gets them really invested into anime
Solid picks, to be honest. There are categories where I'd have a different pick, but picking ONE show is hard. and doesn't really make sense, outside of the context of a video. I think for recommending good starter animes, discussing what genre the person in front of you would be interested in first is indeed important, obviously, but then having a single pick is a bit too hit or miss in my opinion. Just have say 3 picks with different appeals, but have those differences be simple enough to be explained in a single sentence to not be overwhelming, and easy to remember. Like "Oh, so you want something that you feel could be released by HBO if it were live action, basically? Well, you have Attack on Titan, where the last bastion of humanity is threatened by man-eating titans, so if you want great world building and an amazing plot, way deeper than what you may expect rn, with a lot of twists and turns in the story, that's for you. The action's really cool, too. Though, if you feel more like watching some dramatic story about Vikings, you have Vinalnd Saga. That show knows how to do good action, but also have quieter moments, entire arcs even, where you have the characters questioning themselves, the world, their relationships, etc. And if you Want something more like a murder mystery drama, but from the point of view of the murderer, with a bit of supernatural, try Death Note, another classic whith a smart-ass student that has a notebook that's able to kill anyone whose name is written on it. He uses it to kill criminals only, and sinks deeper and deeper into madness, while playing 8D chess against a genius detective." That's just a random example, but that way I feel like you give more options. because people who don't know shit about anime don't know what a death note is. they just heard of Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, Maybe Bleach? and if they're your parents maybe they heard about older shows you don't know of lmao, but that's it. And giving more diversified recommendations may spark interest in the other person like "damn vikings sound dope, but I think I feel like watching a show where you follow the bad guy right now. But I'll keep the other two in the back of my mind". Plus, if the person ends up dropping one, they may end up "Nah, In the end, I can't put up with having the bad guy as the Main character, I think I feel too forced to be sympathetic to him... Let's try this other one with the Titans, that sounds safer" (plot twist incoming lmao) Recommending your favourite anime is cool, recommending your own first anime is probably even better, but just adapt your suggestion to the person. I've seen friends recommend random seasonal anime bullshit to people that doesn't watch anime... it hurts. it actually physically hurt, please stop. At least give some "tamer" shows. the most important rule is probably the "no anime BS". unless you're recommending an anime for a middle/high schooler, i guess.
16:25 I had to do a double take. I thought this sounded so eerily familiar and then I realized I was just Rick Rolled in Japanese. I cannot believe that this exists. I love it!
Violet Evergarden was my first one and it was perfect for me as a starter. I have recommended it a few times and some of my friends who do not watch anime at all have enjoyed it a lot.
My starter Anime I recommend everytime is "Samurai Champloo" it's a perfect mix of serious action, comedy, unique style unlike anything else, good music, dub is fantastic, no unnecessary fanservice, great pacing, and it's not very long because most people won't finish an anime if they aren't into anime.
As a sci-fi fan, there is barely anything to watch in like the last decade. I am excluding all the gundam-related stuff. You can probably watch everything released in less than half a year. Like, if we take this season for example, there is actually nothing at all. But there sure are like 20 different isekai shows with increasingly more and more stupid gimmicks each season.
I recommend cyber punk to beginners, easy to watch 10 eps, not on a special platform, and has action, and really put you thru, kinda hits most emotions but goes 0-100 really fast
I hooked my father on anime with Demon Slayer and Attack on Titan - huuuuuge emphasis on AOT. He was always so excited to watch the latest episode every weekend!

My go-to recommendation to anyone as their first anime is “Erased”. It’s not my favorite, but it’s good, it’s short, the mystery theme is familiar from western media, and it’s not overwhelming. Still it’s a good intro to several aspects of anime and is a mix of genres.
After finishing this video I watched Maquia with my mom on your recommendation Garnt. I really can't thank you enough for such a fantastic recommendation. Thanks a ton. That movie was a gem.
I think the best anime to recommend to someone who doesn't like the typical artstyle that the majority of anime have (ex. the big eyes, small nose, and pointy chin) is "Ranking of Kings" and "The Girl from the Other Side." Since both anime have a unique artstyle that don't feel too anime. And the art looks straight out of a picture book! 😊
Absolutely agree on a Silent Voice. I was fortunate enough to take a day trip out to Ogaki (town where it is set) from Nagoya and was just so nice to sit under the waterfall and experience the sounds that Shoko would have been able to feel despite her deafness. The ending makes me cry beautiful tears with such a simple melody hitting so hard. Could also have gone for Anohana as it is also one I recommend to new users, but only with the caveat that they binge it all in one go as it needs to be seen through to the end. I'm a romance anime fan to the max and I really don't like Golden Time. The main characters are not likeable people and their connection seems painted on for the sake of the lost love arc. Agree that it's hard to recommend romance anime blindly, but can generally throw a blanket over half a dozen depending on the person I'm talking to.

I got my mother into anime… I changed my mothers opinion of anime from it being 25th frame brainwashing tool to her seeing it as an art form. It took me a while, but I started with 5 Centimeters per Second for her. And now she’s acquainted with A Silent Voice, Satoshi Kon, Ghibli, etc. My 30 year old friend who has already seen Death Note, I recommended Psycho-Pass, Ghost in the Shell, Code Geass, etc. And it’s been good. He binged No Game No Life recently. The conversion is going successfully. I got into anime through Kill la Kill. I used to watch some Ghibli movies and Naruto. But both were just cartoons to me. They didn’t make me want to seek out more anime. Until I saw a watchmojo video with featured Kill La Kill, and my horny teenage brain was hooked. So, we all have different paths that led us here.
My mom has watched Ghibli films with me, but I did get her to watch Maquia, turned to me during the emotionally pivotal moment at the end of the film and said “I hate you” with tears in her eyes. Still very proud of this moment lol
I feel that way when I got my Mom to read "I want to eat your pancreas" lol
Same energy as my dad picking Black Panther so he could sleep and hated it because it was so good that he forgot to sleep
I randomly watched Maquia earlier this year. A definite tear-jerker. Great world building too that I wish was explored more but there's no other media for it as it was an original movie script.

I tried to get my parents to watch Tokyo Godfathers around christmas and we only got like 20 minutes in and they were like "This is way too serious" and then we shut it off. I don't begrudge them for it, but some folks just get too overwhelmed by uncomfortable subject matter, I think.

AoT was not my first anime but I was hooked after the first episode which I watched like in 2015. It's still to this day my favorite piece of media
@@LuisSierra42it's also my fav
@@LuisSierra42 for me it was season 2 where i truely got hyped and could not stop watching. Final season had me the most hyped ive even been watching anime
Its so sad that they ruined it. First seasons were so great but they had to fuck it all up.
@@kvakq bro what 💀? Season 4 is literally the best season. It just kept getting better
I think easiest way to get someone to watch an anime is to pick one that is available on a platfrom they are regular viewers of.
Comedian Bill Burr watched One-Punch Man, because it was promoted on Netflix at the time and he enjoyed it big times, despite having no prior knowledge about anime.
So good criterias for first anime should be:
- Availability on popular streaming services
- Good Dub
- Easy to digest themes without in jokes
I love how consistently Bill Burr proves that most people hate things because they haven't experienced them. He used to hate Star Wars because he thought it was stupid. Then he was cast in a Star Wars show and the people behind it changed his mind.
Komi Can't Communicate. Erased. Cowboy Bebop as I don't agree with his argument against episodic interest considering the success of Rick and Morty.
To be fair, Edgerunners is the only anime listed
@@ApolloPlanetary For some people a good segway is just shows that are animated, and not the 3d disney kind. I had a friend that would call me weeb as soon as i mentioned anything close to anime. I showed him Arcane, then Castlevania then Tokyo Revengers and he was hooked. He is currently going through ALL of One Piece, Naruto AND Bleach at the same time.
@@ouwle6618 that's an awful way to consume those shows
@@ouwle6618 I can be a real nitpick sometimes but I have no problem with that. Hell, I would say Arcane is more like anime than most Ghibli films. And don't get me wrong, I have three Ghibli films in my top 10 all time favorite films ever but they are not representative of the wider world of anime IMO. I mean can you imagine the culture shock of someone going from Spirited Away as an introduction to anime to Kill la Kill?
i truly think One Punch Man is gotta be one of the best First Anime options. Great Action, Great Comedy, Adult Life Humor. Godly Animation S1
Yesss finally someone mentioned this show
Promised Neverland season 1 is the best blind pick anime imo it has one of the best first episode hooks and the camera direction is really good and it's constantly tense while the plot unravels
So no one noticed that editor rickrolled us in 16:26 (japanese version of never gonna give you up)
For the wild card category, i would actually recommend 91 Days. It's one of the most underrated anime I've ever watched and the ending hits hard.
hard agree. 91 days is so fucking good
U got good taste, I got 91 days top 10 on my MAL
it's literally a poor version of mafia shows
tho ig it could appeal to someone who is into those type of shows
@@etlanime actually I think it being a poor version of a mafia show works in favour for beginners.
@@SueRoethe godfather isn't a show tho
Upvote because black lagoon is a perfect seinen into to anime
Thank you My man :D
I’ve recommended Psycho Pass and Vinland Saga since the plot was good and more relatable to what family or friends watch. I also recommend season 1 of Promised Neverland. If a family member enjoys a little fantasy comedy then My Uncle From Another World might be a good pick.
Promised Neverland goes with DeathNote in "psychological" genre i think. But yes, would be a good starter
Promised neverland is fine but My uncle is definitely a tier 2 anime watcher pick
Thank you for including Baccano, it seems to get way too little recognition.
too*
The anime that got me into anime is Horimiya, I think it is a pretty good contender for the Romance category tbh
How fast paced the relationship is makes it feel realistic unlike a lot of romance shows where nothing happens for multiple seasons 😅
Lemme guess, you're American?
The Promised Neverland was my parents' first anime, I chose it because of the fast hook. Their second anime and first shonen is Hunter x Hunter. I've seen 40 eps with them now, and my Dad loves it. He says Leorio is his favorite character
He has great taste 😊❤ love leorio
have you gotten to the part where gon and killua find out his actual age? that part had me dying 💀
tbh its great one as one of the starters
leorio goat
That was my route too. I watched Promised Neverland and HxH,loved them both, but AOT was the one that pushed me over the cliff
I would say March Comes in like a Lion is a perfect pic for drama. I watched that with my mom and she loved it
Only problem is that everything after that will be disappointing because you've already seen one of the best anime ever made
I thought of it too.
@@zeroyuki92 yo no sé nada de shogi ni ajedrez y me enamoró por completo San gatsu no lion

Ouran has performative homosexuality and incest in it. Hardly what one nowadays would consider a gateway anime.
I'd recommend iron blood orphans over 86 for a mecha anime. I feel like 86 falls off too hard at the end.
@@maestromarat6195 86 has some of the best payoffs in a show I’ve ever seen, how is that falling off? I think the second cour is definitely worse than the first, but it’s still a solid 9/10 for me

Let 86 have its moment, let 86 fans celebrate it and recommend it, its a good show, and ibo doesnt belong in this discussion. my favorite anime is Ping Pong the Animation, honestly i think it's a really good thing to recommend to non-anime fans because it is so outside the norm of what anime is while still hitting so many relatable plot beats that are nearly universal to the human experience. i feel like the only barrier with Ping Pong is the way it looks being kinda odd and that the subversion of common anime tropes may be lost on someone who doesn't know them.

An excellent suggestion. Even for we die-hard anime fans, there are great shows that some of know, but others don't.
9:41 Did Not expect the Texhnolyze openig there, got goosebumps instantly.
Underrated anime
He uses it to kill criminals only, and sinks deeper and deeper into madness, while playing 8D chess against a genius detective."
That's just a random example, but that way I feel like you give more options. because people who don't know shit about anime don't know what a death note is. they just heard of Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, Maybe Bleach? and if they're your parents maybe they heard about older shows you don't know of lmao, but that's it. Let's try this other one with the Titans, that sounds safer" (plot twist incoming lmao)
Recommending your favourite anime is cool, recommending your own first anime is probably even better, but just adapt your suggestion to the person. I've seen friends recommend random seasonal anime bullshit to people that doesn't watch anime... it hurts. it actually physically hurt, please stop. At least give some "tamer" shows. the most important rule is probably the "no anime BS". unless you're recommending an anime for a middle/high schooler, i guess.
my two recommendations for starter anime are "a silent voice" and "jojo's bizarre adventure"

This anime brought me back to Anime. It was the first time in about 5 years that I was excited for it. ❤

Ok how many of us are actually new to anime? Yeah, me neither yet I'm still watching this
I'm not but I just haven't been bothered to watch these when I heard them on Trash Taste so this is a reminder. Also I haven't heard about Maquia
I don't think the purpose of this video was for new viewers of anime to watch it, it's for weebs so they know what to recommend to new viewers, considering how bad Jordan's recommendations were lmao
I told my friend to watch Monster Musume, he had never seen anime before and after that he asked me if I had more
