The fact that the promised neverland part has the sentence "Just watch season one of the anime and experience the rest of the show through its manga. Thank me later." Makes me think whoever made this list actually watches anime. Which is honestly setting a new quality standard for kotaku. It isnt a high bar but ill take what i can get.
Reminds me how CBR had so many articles like on Re Zero which they clearly didn't watch the anime. They do fine with comics, not so well with anime. I was actually surprised by their Dr Stone reviews since it was done by someone who watched the name. I have no idea why some sites decide to have people make a "top 10" list or whatever about anime when they don't want to watch anime.
Don't put it past them to have copied another anime review and slapped their name on it.
I mean, that sounds like someone who didn't read the manga. It's better than the anime, but still something I felt massively wasted my time. I'd take the Erased manga over Promised Neverland manga.

Gigguk from 5 years ago would have just lied and put Fullmetal Alchemist on top and acted like he watched it. I think at least the current Gigguk would just be honest and put Domestic Girlfriend in the top 3. He has shit taste but that's not as bad as pretending to have good taste.
Rather he will keep most 2000s anime as he revealed he's top 9 fav anime on trash taste

Whatever one's opinion is on this list and whether some anime should or shouldn't be on this list, this Kotaku article felt like something an actual person sat down and actually took the time to create, and I appreciate that.

It really does seem like someone sat down, and burried a bunch.
They were payed to give positive oppinions on shows that, are frank;y manipulative twards children, especially, hypersexuality - and then they put a list of the anime they actually like, around it, making money, stirring up drama durring the begining of the list, which increased retention and comments, followed with populis based anime with wide margines, like a soccer anime because half the world plays soccer, and finished, with a wide variety of good anime.
They chickened out alot in the places it didnt matter, but in the places it did they provided solid arguments.

Summertime Rendering gave us an ending. That's more than most anime do nowadays. And I enjoyed the whole thing from start to finish.
Same, I loved going along with unravelling the mystery. I wish I could find more anime like it…
I thought the ending was a bit... not a bad ending, but kind of flaccid.
I think the creator wrote themselves in a corner, because they dropped a few story threads, like how during the funeral the first time, a guy asks the protag if he found the woman he was looking for, except he asked that guy about her by the third loop.
Still an excellent anime regardless though, I just wish it had an ending as good as the whole thing kept escalating.

And it stuck the ending in my opinion. The beginning is definitely better, due to the whole mystery aspect, but I enjoyed the ending nonetheless.

That's because the Summertime Render anime was made years after the manga had long been finished.
That's not something anime staff has control over, you can't really diss other anime on adapting current/ongoing series while it's hot.

opm season2 shouldn't even be ignored anyway. People overreact about it's flaws, it doesn't even come close to being a downgrade on the level of promised neverland s2

The difference is that OPM season 1 is self-contained, Promised Neverland is not.
I dont even get the hype behind opm. Way too many anime out there with better comedy , better story , better characters and who cares about animations.

Space Dandy getting any recognition at all really is a W. It perfectly intermingles episodic with alternating animation (co?)directors and the occasional canon episode is just beautiful. Season one is hilarious, and season 2's animation budget/execution just seems another level.
It's EP is so damn good too
I'm so happy to see Space Dandy getting some love and appreciation.
Its widely different from Watanabe's other works, but that's what makes it unique.
Dandy is just pure fun. I own both season 1 and 2 on blu ray.

Legit cheered alongside Garnt when MP100 was put on top, it is the closest we get to a flawless anime, and its actually one of the few anime that ended well without zero controversy. The only anime I think should be included in this list is Magus Bride, but thats about it
To be honest, when I first heard about Kotaku I thought it was about anime.
Not a coincidence since the name Kotaku derives from the word Otaku with the prefix ko- meaning small.

As much as I don’t like Kotaku’s (mis)handling of holding journalistic integrity, they kind of started the game journalist hate bandwagon that plagues the general gaming community. Despite there being goat’d game journalists out there who do handle journalistic reporting and critiquing well AND would hold higher rank in an arcade fighting game.
i love how One (one punch man and mob psycho's author) drew such goofy drawings for the web comics, and yet the adaptations have some of the cleanest animation among the whole industry

The truth is that ONE didn't "draw them goofy", he is just *really* bad at drawing in general. Which is the actual charm of it all.
I have a similar opinion of Demon slayer. The Manga has scritchy simple line work. But the anime is full of details.
One anime that I missed dearly was psycho pass... I loved the original season when it came out. It had a dip in between when the new characters got involved but I always found the show compelling and with the last season and the movies I was pretty drawn in.

I really hoped girl's last tour made the list, very underrated anime. The emotions and themes it conveys is subtle, yet much more effective and leaves a lasting impression than some of the ones that are overly dramatic on purpose.

I’d personally like to add Made in Abyss, Devilman Crybaby, Vivy, 86, Dororo. It’s hard for me to recall shows from way back I’d need to look at a list of anime from 2013 but those are all amazing shows.
Why Vivy is that underrated ? It's was easily one of the best show of 2021 yet nobody's talking about it, I will never understand that...

I'm surprised Gigguk didn't think Re:Creators should have been on the list given that he made a whole video talking about it. It's definitely a top 25 for me. Also, why does nobody remember Vivy: Florite Eye Song 😭

He says in the video that despite him loving he understand why is not a masterpiece or popular, I also love RE:Creators (probably way more than Garnt) but I get why he don't talk much with other big anime of the decade because to be fair is not that deserving in terms of quality and impact on the industry, maybe in a completely subjective list he would mention it somewhere.
Vivy was a great show. I would definitely put up in the top 15 for me.

This list ain't bad, you could actually show this to someone getting into anime as a general recommendation and not be ashamed of it. They might be kinda shit at games, but I guess they know their anime.
Can't say I agree with a lot of the takes on the list but I would agree as a list for people getting into Anime it's great. Really good variety of shows on there.

Good list, but for list about the decade? Most were from 2019 and up. Far too much recency bias.
Wow, this was a shockingly good list. Like the person wrote this clearly actually knows their anime, which is super rare for these major outlets. Obviously a few odd picks and a few strange absences, but that's to be expected on the list of any serious anime fan. I'm genuinely impressed, it's not the best top X list I've seen, but it's probably the best I've seen from a major outlet.
I really like this kind of list/video because it reminds me of which anime to watch instead of watching anime that were only hype before and during airing. These kind of anime are those that would truly remain in our heart even after 10 years have passed...

Surprisingly solid list despite the few odd choices. Notable missing to me aside from the two mentioned by Garnt would be 86, Sangatsu, A Place Further Than the Universe, Megalobox and Paripi Koumei as a wildcard.
And with how good the currently airing season of Vinland Saga is, it should be top 3 next time someone makes such a list
paripi koumei ehh a bit too wild of a card + recency bias, was fun but not enough there in 1 cour for the kind of story it is. I'd throw Saiki K in there as well, and maybe Link Click and unlimited blade works. get mid period and mid classroom out of there!!! (hot take assassination classroom has been viewed by the entire community through rose tinted glasses, rewatch was tough)

The biggest W for me here is the well deserved mention of Oregairu in 29:59. I definitely think it deserves to be in the top 30 of the last decade and not many anitubers are talking about it. Such good writing and some of my favourite monologues came from Hachiman. Definitely an L that it wasn't included in the top 30 though
Yeah, I was hoping it'd showing up on the list, IMO it's the only romance show that holds up to Kaguya-sama
It was great, but for me later seasons got a little bit weird, I mean as they should, bcs love isnt easy, still the later seasons didnt land for me. Very good anime indeed tho

That latest OVA left a horrible taste in my mouth but i completely agree that oregairu overall had some powerful writing with a character as deep as hachiman, was hoping to see it on the list

Okay, the biggest W's for me were easily the mentioning of Space Dandy and Odd Taxi.
Two shows I personally think are incredibly overlooked and aren't appreciated as much. Space Dandy for being such a fun, chaotic ride with animation that I think has aged well, especially in its second season and Odd Taxi for being a great mystery series with an interesting plot twist that makes you rethink all of the events that had transpired.
Someone at Kokaku actually watches anime, not just what's on mainstream.

This. I feel like it deserves recognition for never dropping the ball, because that's insanely hard to do for such a long runtime. Like, I not once walked away from an episode thinking "eh, that was kinda disappointing", I always had a thoroughly good time. And sure, I didn't necessarily crave more at that exact moment (just like how I'd feel sick from too many PBJ sandwiches), but by the time a week had passed, I always was 100% down for a comforting half hour of it again :)
It deserves the spot. Ngl. Garnt was a bit biased, the list was great.
It's kind of boring tbh, there are some charming parts like the "eleganceeeeeee" man, but eh. Also anya is no bochi (ranking) or somali (somali and the forest spirit) when it comes to wholesomeness.

@@manuelsputnik nah it’s definitely too high, Garnt wasn’t being biased. Being put over made in abyss (which wasn’t even on the list for some reason), ranking of kings, and odd taxi is a bit of an L. It deserves a place on the list, but 13 is too high.
As a massive Kaguya fan I would definitely put Kaguya up there, but I never expected them to rank it so high!
Pretty solid list in general.
(Also, I think Beastars S1 is WAY better than S2. I'd definitely put S1 in my top 10 of the decade, but S2, not so much)

I was surprised by the sudden, brief cue from Drakengard. Not just any Drakengard; the first one. I'm happy that wacky game is getting some recognition.
I am very surprised that March comes in like a lion did not make it into that list. I personally think it is the best slice of life of the past decade, head and shoulders above the rest, if not of best anime of the past decade.

March Comes in Like a Lion (S2 in particular) is in my top five of all time. That, Ping Pong, Rakugo Shinjuu, Mushihi, Silver Spoon, and Daily Lives of Highschool Boys should be on the list. Also, S3 of Mob Psycho really soured me on the anime, so I am not completely on board with its placement.

@@rhinogaming919 How about the fact that the writing is atrocious? The season was just a cheap imitation of the first two seasons. Everything that happened ultimately didn't matter. They built up the Dimple storyline ending with his death so much just for it to turn out that he is alive by the end. Mob's whole rampage was also just pointless because there weren't any real consequences. The conclusion of the Tsubomi subplot just compounded the issue. The only good episode was episode seven with the Telepathy Club.
Its always good to hear that im not alone with the opinion that Made in Abyss i one of the best Animes of the last decade. It makes me happy that every time gigguk is talking about it, there might be some soul out there that is discovering Made in Abyss thanks to him. Truly an Amazing show.

They need a slight push to actually go and watch it and im happy that Gigguk might be this push for someone to actually watch the show. Its definitely not underrated, because its really highly rated by almost anyone who watched it. Its rather more "underwatched" or "unrecognized"
Made in Abyss should've been #2 and Heavenly Delusion deserved to be somewhere in the top 20
Really great list tbh if we're talking by Kotaku standards, i do feel like there's too many 2022 and 2021 anime in here, so shows like Fate, Monogatari, Jojo and (the ones i've watched) Madoka Magica and Made in Abyss are absent along with many SoL or romance shows. I'm not specifically talking about quality only, but in how much of a cultural impact they had in the industry.
I wonder if by decade they were going with 2013-2023, which would explain the absence of Fate/Madoka; JoJo/Monogatari while airing well into the 2010s technically had their pilot season back in 2011/12.
@@FrizFroz In the case of Fate/ that would only apply to the DEEN adaptations, f/z, and Carnival Phantasm. ufotable's UBW first aired in 2014.
@@giovanni0654 Yes, but personally the only Fate that makes this list is F/0 back in 2011. FSN is good but not top anime of the decade good, not even the HF movies.
Technically Madoka Magica doesn't fit as it aired in 2011, and if the end of the decade is 2023, then only anime from 2013 are taken into account

Summer Time Render was one of my favorite animes of last year, probably my favorite timeloop anime. Damn did it pull at my hear strings.
Gigguk seemed surprised that Dragon Maid and Made in Abyss didn't make the list, but I think it's fairly obvious why they weren't there. The discourse around them in recent years has been horrendous, and it's been everywhere.
Kotaku of all places COULD NOT get away with putting them on there, as badly as the writer of that article most likely judging from their tastes wanted it to be.

I mean, they put a show where the main character is a pedophile in the top 10, so surely the "discourse" doesn't mean that much to them.
I know Garnt isn't a big fan of Parasyte but I'm still gonna say it definitely should be up there.
For me it's a show that beautifully fuses all kinds of different genres together while also having a great, entertaining story with philosophical subjects. No other show I've seen so far done it the way Parasyte did.

Summer time render was this close to be 10/10 but the ending ruin it all , i love everything about the show except the last 3 episodes where they basically says " lol nothing happened ending " , still amazing show and ep 15 was a pure masterpiece

Kaguya-Sama is my favorite anime so far of the 100+ I have seen. I am so glad it’s actually getting attention, because I recommend it to people and they have never even heard of it. They look at me funny and I feel weird, awkward, and even a little upset.
I think they expect my favorite anime to be a Shounen. One Punch Man was my first anime and I loved it. Mob psycho 100, and My Hero Academia were also super good, but Kaguya-Sama is where it is at.
Started it a few days ago, I'm near the end of season 2, and I've never grinned so constantly throughout a series. It's extremely fun, and I didn't expect to be rooting so much for a ship. Or to even enjoy a show centered on a ship at all.
Great list, the only thing that hurts me is the lack of March comes in like a Lion.

It did not make the list because as much as people like you loved the anime there is a same ammout that dont, i am one of those people that dont like it because i cant take it serious like the most dangerous place in the world and there is a 6 year old girl running around like in the first 8 episodes she should of died like 5 times atleast but because of bullshit writing she is alive and well. They could of made her like 19/20years atleast make it abit belivable....

Its not for everyone guys. Theres a reason it doesnt havent a big community. I nearly threw up watching the movie and then quited the series. Im into horror movies and gore but that was too much. At least in horror movies they arent kids
@@ege920 no the reason why the comunity isnt very big is because almost no one knows it exists. Made in abyss isnt even horror, and last I remember there isnt anything too terrible in made in abyss to warrent throwing up. Sounds to me like you just cant handle true thriller.

In my opinion, the best parts of the 86 story come right after the anime ends. Volume 6 especially is incredible
6:06 At first I was like "What's so special about Space Dandy being on the list?" but after some thought I was also blown away because I think I have never seen an anime list actually putting it on while it is one of the most fun shows to watch with incredible production value and a strong and potent artitistic vision.
But I can emphasize people making those lists because in the moment you are putting those together one doesn't think about Space Dandy at all but the moment someone remembers it it suddenly clicks and you are completly blown away how awesome this show is. However, due to the episodic structure and sometimes very experimental story concepts it feels hard to remeber it.
I would be terrible at doing top (whatever number) list for current or a decade back anime. The biggest reason is I just don’t have the time to keep up on what’s currently streaming per season. That and I like to wait a bit on those shows that have gotten the initial hype train to see what they’re saying after the hype.

I think part of it is for the top 10, they were doing shows that started in the past decade. I don't know when they were making the cutoff within or around 2012 or when this list came out, but that may play into a few of the things not included.
This list was a lot better than anyone was expecting.
I’m happy blue periods on there and as someone who has or as my favourite manga I do have many issues with the anime but still enjoy it, but I have talked to people who have only seen the anime and love it. The animation is the main issue as the rushed pacing is kinda welcomed since it’s done well and makes it flow better for anime , but the lack of great animation makes the moments not hit as hard at all. Like they should when even when rushed but don’t. Still I respect the pic as it is still is kinda the best manga ever made.

@@okay8458 I still like it, as I do understand why it speed runs as to be honest it would be way better if animation made the impactful moments hit, like all the ryuji stuff did not hit as much because of the animation, if it had good animation pacing would not be a big deal as the moment would hit.
I still like the anime and can say it’s a low 8 out of 10 high 7 out 10, still decent. Manga a 10

I'm anime only and liked a lot. Even pestered a friend to watch it. The pacing felt fine to me and the animation too.
@AWanderingSwordsman That's my point anime only will not really notice as it does the best job it can. Animation could have been better but pacing works especially if you have not been a manga reader. Still recommend it as it is way better and there is content missed in the anime but only really mire context or dialog but still.
Kaguya-sama was literally the best Rom-com show of the last decade. I can't think of any other romance show that delivered like Season 3 of Kaguya-sama. It's easily my top 5 of all time. I'm also curious to know what anime Gigguk is saying that would compete with Kaguya-sama.

I am so glad he mentioned the fact Oregairu wasn't in the list, Oregairu is so so SO criminally underrated and not talked about at all despite the fact it's one of the best shows of all time I'd argue.
It was 💩, that ending destroyed all character building the show had, and the last season was a complete dud.
So much so that now they want to fix it making an alternate timeline where he does make the correct choice, but it's a little too late. Oregairu isn't even top 50 in the last decade

The main issue I have with Oregairu is that I always mix up this anime title with Oreimo.
Honestly one of the best highschool setting series, but the anime is not criminally underrated. So many parts of the show is confusing unless you're a 10/10 empathy master and can read their minds. The series really suffers since Hachiman's actions will make little to no sense at times because his thoughts are rarely told in the anime. The LN had his thought stated all the time, which greatly made the story flow more smoothly.
that list was actually pretty okay, but i am missing made in abyss and shigatsu wa kimi no uso. To me those 2 are pretty special. Also after thinking about it, i think dororo could be a contender as well as Hai to Gensou no Grimgar. Especially the later one, this isekai is really good and is such a shame it only got one sesson, after reading up on it the story is wild and pretty dark.

Despite Bakemonogatari coming out in 2009, I think the Monogatari series overall could be considered one of the best of the past decade

I think the only egregious L is Made in Abyss not even making the list. Honestly after I saw AoT at #3, I thought for sure it would be Mob and Made in Abyss top 2. Kaguya sama was a total curveball to me.
aside from missing made in abyss. 86 deserves to be on this list. That was one of the few mecha shows I actually liked.

100% agree. Made in Abyss is something else. Beautiful music, beautiful animation and art style, perfect character designs and a sinister but enchanting atmosphere. One of the best, if not the best show I've ever watched. For me, it's an EASY 10/10.

Dr. Stone really feels like something new. It's not really a histrorical anime since the characters are from modern times. But it's also not really an Isekai. But it wedges itself really nicely between both and is an absolute delight to watch. It's really funny and satisfying.

Kotaku used to do lists of all anime’s coming out per season, with information and impressions of the first episode. Was really useful and quick to read, much better than hearing TH-camrs ramble on, so they seem very well placed to do a list like this. Better placed than most TH-camrs indeed.

I'll always remember Lycoris.

To be fair Edge Runners did more with its 10 episodes than others on this list with their multiple seasons. I can see myself in years to come reminiscing about those who were chewed and spit out by the Night City humming 'I wanna stay at your house' for the extra hurt right in the meow meow but who is going to remember some medieval terminator nr 7 dying scene that they tried to milk for over 15min.

One of the best anime list there is maybe some anime are misplaced but in general is a very solid list . It is still quite confusing why oregairu(one of the best series for me ) and made in the abyss are not in the top 10 however the rest is good (very surprising.)
Garnt mentioning Oregairu made my day. It's my personal top 5 greatest anime of all time.
Slice of life anime is so hard to be remembered that I don't get flustered.

The first season of Heroes is some of the best sci-fi TV ever, and the first half Erased is some of the best anime ever made.
I'm actually here for Edgerunners at 4. I've never seen any show, anime or not, pack such a beautiful, compelling, and complete story into so few episodes. That to me shows an incredible amount of artistry.
yea, I wish summertime rendering was higher too. There are some great animes, but these two were actually finished, coherent, compelling for their respective genre. There are some in these list that are ranked too high, considering their peak arc haven't even came yet. The list can be changed later, but as of now, the finished anime should have a bonus scores.

Totally agree, with a lot of other shows I can clearly see why it could be called objectively good, like animation, unique premise etc, however with Edgerunners I just loved it and that's all. I always wonder with 'of the last decade' type lists do you factor in how many seasons it had over those years? or how big the franchise has become outside of just anime? like for example Attack on Titan started in 2013 and is ending now / soon exactly 10 years later, and other than the gap from season 1 to 2 maybe, has always had a new season on the way / been relevant.
or like Jojo too, the adaptation started in 2012 and has kept going and part 6 just recently finished.
... ... or symphogear that is a complete story over 5 seasons in 2012,2013,2015,2017,2019.
or Love Live! that the anime started in 2013 and is huge now as a franchise.

As someone who recently got into anime, really liked the list! Some of my recent favourites got representation like Spy x Family and Odd Taxi, and I 100% agree with the top 3. The other shows I haven’t watched also give me some new ones to add to the backlog, so I’d say this is a W
