I played it as a kid and remember having a good time with it, but it just didn't stick with me the way other Mario RPG's have. I don't think I could name a single boss or cool moment from the game, but I could name a ton of them in Superstar Saga.
@crispy_asch7110 Nah. I would say it's the worst Mario & Luigi game. 2nd being to Dream Team. The problems PIT has is it's linearity, broken item bros., underutilized baby counterpart gameplay, complicated button layout for each bros. imput button, no content or minigames and the story makes no sense. Also the game lags sometimes.
Partners in Time is no Superstar Saga but calling it bad or labeling it as the worst is a bit much. It received well so clearly it’s a good game. It’s a solid B+
It makes no sense. I've started playing PIT (having just finished Superstar Saga), and it's pretty good. I don't expect that from Color Splash, hence I won't play it.
@@aaronTGP_3756 I have played Color Splash (didn't finish it) and I'd put it above Sticker Star but below all the other games even Paper Jam is better so I'm very confused why the GVG crew put Color Splash above PIT and Paper Jam cause even Brandon had only negative things to say about it in the video.
@@GamingMitchit's not just the writing, you should also consider the level variety that is the best part of the game (there is a smb3 callback level, an alternate dimention, a western station, luigi's mansion, a level where you fight a freaking steak). All those points can largely compensate the combat system, considering you can skip most battles if you find those frustrating since you don't have to worry about being underleveled. Partners in time on the other hand is very good especially at the beginning, but after yoob the level design and puzzle start to become pretty repetitive (the last area is very good though, definetly better than the bowser's inside story one)
My favorite of the Mario and Luigi series is actually Partners in Time! I thought for the introduction of the series on the DS, it was really well done, utilizing all 4 face buttons on the DS is really smart. The enemies are also really well designed and I enjoyed the story a lot.
Nope! It isn't. It lacks the consistency of fun found in the original. The touch screen minigames are not fun, and the repetition of certain dialogue sequences becomes tiresome. Original Superstar Saga is ZERO fat, all fun, and the internet needs to come to learn this as truth.@@paulgilbert5278
Paper Mario (N64) is my personal favorite game of all time. I fully respect the common belief that TTYD is better but Paper Mario is so seamless, charming, and nostalgic to me that I could always replay it.
I tell people the same thing, Paper Mario 64 is my favorite game as well! TTYD is definitively better, but the charm and magic that goes along with 64 is incomparable for me.
@@CrowTRobot The battles (excluding boss battles) are the only thing that gets a little tiresome, but that's only part of the gameplay. The rest is phenomenal! It's a hell of a lot better than the gameplay of Super Paper Mario for example and that's not even taking into account that the latter has terrible level design as well. Great, you can switch dimensions, but it's still a boring corridor with nothing to do in it.
I can understand why they would say origami king's better, but COLOUR SPLASH?! The game isn't bad per se, but partners in time is WAY better in my opinion.
I feel like im the only person who loves paper jam. The battles with the giant paper version of mario are so cool to me and i love also the dynamic of the normal mario characters interacting with their paper forms. Its just a cool experience and a cool crossover overall
I also found it quite entertaining, and the combat was the most fun out of all Mario & Luigi games (and combat is a big reason why I like the series). I wouldn't say that it's my #1, and I would argue that most games on this list are quite high quality. I know people complain about Paper Mario not being used to the full potential, but his character still had fairly unique moves, and you have to remember that this game came out between Sticker Star and Colour Splash. There wasn't much to pull from those games. Furthermore, this was a Mario & Luigi game. It plays like you expected it to. Of course, I would have liked more varied characters, but at least the pacing was better than Dream Team. The paper mechas were also really cool, especially with the 3D effect.
I agree. I like it more than Dream Team and Partners in Time. I know the story isn't anything spectacular. But the gameplay was fun and doesn't suffer pacing issue like Dream Team has.
I think it has a lot of underrated elements to it that get overlooked because it doesn’t have unique characters. Trust me that is a downside but I feel there is a lot to love about Paper Jam.
You're not alone. I think Paper Jam got hated because of how far Paper Mario had fallen, so it didn't get credit for being a weird Mario multiverse game with Mario & Luigi gameplay. It's placed sinfully low on this list.
I couldn't help but notice that Jon, the absolute chad, placed Mario RPG/Seven Stars at number one on his list when everyone else had TTYD at number one. It stood out to me because Mario RPG is likely my favorite game of all time and so I would have placed it at one as well and I figured that nobody else would do such a thing. I'm glad I was wrong. There's just nothing else like it, since...you know...that game was made by Square in their prime, in their golden era, and the rest feel very different because they feel like Nintendo. Which is good because Nintendo is great as well! But it all started with Square mixing with Nintendo's great game series.
I feel like the people who don’t have legend of the seven stars number one weren’t old enough. Lol. That game has so much. It was way before it’s time.
Mario and Luigi will always be among my favorite Mario spinoffs. And the fact that people largely ignored it in its later years crushes me, especially after Paper Mario swerved in a completely different direction that fans weren’t happy with.
I agree its sad, but to be fair the series was stagnating. Dream team and paper jam were both meh, and the bowsers inside story remake was the nail in the coffin. It came out on 3ds years after the switch was out, and the 3ds could already play the original. The remake had no reason to exist and bankrupted the studio
Don't look at me. The only ones I didn't buy were the 3DS remakes. I'm not entirely sure what peoples' hangs ups were with Paper Jam. The third playable character put in some much needed gameplay depth after Dream Team. I definitely agree the frequency of M&L releases really fatigued us fans, but Paper Jam is a 9 out of 10 game when compared against the then-upcoming Color Splash
@@anbFUSIONnah dream team was more than meh. Great environments, great combat, best music in the series, great bosses and good writing. The only downsides were the pacing and tutorials. Paper jam was meh and BISDX was the final nail in the coffin
Personally I never really enjoyed dream team. Mainly because it felt like the game was stalling with the padding, but maybe that's just me. Paper Jam I didn't even try because it just looked so basic. Maybe if the game was an actual crossover of the two series instead of just being mario and luigi with paper mario thrown in. Super Star Saga remake looked so average compared to the original and bowser's inside story remake is the most pointless remake in the franchise history.
Bwuh. BIS in 5th place?! Legit insane. Once again. Smh so much my head fell off. No way BIS (or Mario RPG or Superstar Saga) should be below Paper Mario 64. I'm going to disintegrate from how bright the nostalgia gotta be to make one THIS blind! Anyways fun video.
[I may be insane, but... ]My list btw would look like this: 1. Thousand Year Door (no surprise. I almost tried to be contrarian but I thought about the characters, the story, the world, etc. And just had to give it to it.) 2. Bowser's Inside Story (I actually have some issues here and there that I recall, like having less of the fun overworld traversal stuff, but the experience with this game was very enjoyable and a wild ride. Starlow also got to stick around in Dream Team for a reason. Fun companion character.) 3. Super Star Saga (100% will admit this one is here from bias and nostalgia. I have more of it for this game than the number 4 spot which would have gotten this otherwise. The fight in my mind was strong but it came out on top) 4. Mario RPG (fun, whimsical. Goofy story with a lot of heart and fun going for it. You can feel the Square DNA strongly here which has some downsides at times but overall it is a big up and I enjoy this game and the characters, even if I honestly feel the nostalgia and character designs overblown their actual depth out of proportion looking in) 5. Paper Mario 64 (My lack of deep nostalgia likely brings it down similarly to Mario RPG, but I also realized that no matter how nostalgic games lower on this list may make me feel at times, I can't undermine the innovations made by 64 with the badge system that is still used to this day, the overall gameplay structure. But I also look at the story, and the bosses and characters and see that it doesn't delve out too far. It is a basic Bowser as a main enemy storyline that I feel suffer in the RPG games and is one of the greater criticisms I have for many of the later paper games as well as the last two Mario and Luigi games. Though Bowser benefits from being depicted as a goof ball) 6. Super Paper Mario (an enjoyable experience. A lot of fun characters and a beautifully touching storyline and main antagonist. I understand this was the start of the great divide in the fanbase and I see why but it still has soul) 7. Dream Team (similar to the video. A lot of potential, a really fun advancement of the stuff introduced in Bowsers Inside Story. But you can also start feeling in this game the same hand that affected Paper Mario. The NPCs have much less character overall it seems, they start to feel more cut out like The apparent main new villain. Which had been a joy so far in the series, gets snubbed for a pretty eh finale. Game actually crashed on me once, idk thought I'd mention.) 8. Partners in Time (I know many people dislike this game, I've heard about how the bosses were too spongy [which was apparently a goofy difficulty thing nintendo did mostly for the western releases], and I also agree that it sucks how special moves are now items. I'd have much proffered Bros attacks returning because they're such a cool aspect of Superstar, that set the series apart. And the game introduces overworld traversal skills that could have transferred so well into bros attacks, when with the babies. The story and characters are also really fun and there are fun Twists and turns throughout. I lost my original copy of this game in an airplane trip alongside a few other ds games close to my heart ages ago 😢) 9. Origami King (I almost put this above Partners but when I thought about it, despite feeling a lot like a return to form, the great areas, music and personalities of the bosses despite their appearance as art tools, I can't give Origami King too much credit for simply rising up above the games preceeding it. It is as if it gets a boost from the past games being bad, which is fair but also looking at it on its own I still appreciate much of what it does story, character and world wise, but the combat falters greatly for me.) 10. Paper Jam (here you can see the touch of death in full force that Paper Mario carried at the time. Both Bowsers get somewhat of a personality debuff, specially paper Bowser. Misses a lot of the charm from the paper Mario world and Mario and luigi side can't fully compensate as you can feel the soul sap that started in Dream Team take a hold. You can't super blame the team for missing the heart of paper Mario either because this is the era of Paper Mario where the heart wasn't there either) EX. 10.5. This is where I'd put Kingdom Battle if people wanna count it. It has a lot of character and is overall a good time but it defs feels a bit off and I got some ptsd due to the Rabbids. I was there during the transition from Rayman to Rabbids mania. My mind is broken. 11. Colour Splash (regardless of how much better some of the dialogue is and even the slight improvement on combat. I completely blank out on most of this game. It is at its core, a sticker star follow up in HD. The partner character may be a bit more likeable from what I recall but overall near the bottom for a reason. The only real reason it couldn't be lower is...) 12. Sticker Star (bleurgh, what can I say that hasn't been said already? The death of soul and depth in the series. It has some fun sections for sure. Nintendo can't help but make good things here and there. But there is no joy, Intsys has their minds on other stuff and even that stuff [Fire Emblem... anyone remember Codename Steam?] Isn't displaying as much soul as I'd personally have liked. It gets bonus he'll points for being the catalyst that helped make so many dull years after and both the paper Mario and Mario and luigi fambases suffer) EX. BONUS. Sparks of Hope gets no theoretical slot like kingdom battle did cuz i feel its unfair to rank a gane i havent bothered buying, playing or even looking at. The mario sports RPGs also dont get ranked because despite my fun with them and some interesting things they do. Theyre not really rpgs to me so much as mario sports games with some fun rpg elements? Camelot please go back make a Golden Sun HD
My list: 12. Paper Mario Sticker Star 11. Paper Mario colour splash 10. Paper Mario Origami King 9. Mario and Luigi Paper Jam 8. Super Paper Mario 7. Mario and Luigi Dream Team 6. Mario and Luigi Partners in time 5. Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga 4. Paper Mario N64 3. Mario and Luigi Bowser's Inside Story 2. Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door 1. Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars
Partners in Time got disrespected hard by being below Color Splash. I personally think Bowser's Inside Story is better than SMRPG and PM64 but the Top 5 is filled with quality games so I won't complain.
I WILL NOT accept the Partners in Time slander. There is no way that Color Splash or Origami King are better than Partners in Time. Partners in Time has actual characters, actual combat and a memorable story. Super Paper Mario is awesome as hell though.
I think the biggest issue with modern paper mario is that nintendo the company wants it to be an action adventure series, but the devs and the fans know and want it to be an rpg.The thought is simple,we already have the mario and luigi games covering the rpg market so why do we need another series doing the same? Why dont we shift paper mario to a different genre? And yeah at its most foundational level PAPER mario lends itself alot more to being an action adventure game than an rpg the only issue being that it IS an rpg the fans and the devs both know its an rpg and want it to be an rpg. They could make it a good action adventure series but looking at color splash and especially origami king its obvious they dont want to make it an action adventure game. They WANT to make it an rpg because again paper mario IS an rpg.Super paper mario is about the closest we have ever gotten to a paper mario game that is an action adventure game and we see it can work but again people dont want paper mario to be that they want it to be an rpg. However with the bankruptcy of the company that made the mario and luigi series its safe, but unfortunate, to say we wont see another installment from that series.Nintendo obviously knows this and that is my personal belief as to why they are remaking RPG and TTYD they want to reintroduce their old rpgs see what works and decide how they want to move forward.Because yeah paper mario makes sence as an action adventure game stylistically but nintendo obviously can see people want it to be an rpg and if the people really want this series to be an rpg and there is now a hole in the mario rpg market why not give it a shot and see what happens. That to me is also why they chose TTYD over the original paper mario. Most people refer to TTYD when talking about old paper mario its the one the fans want and if fan outcry is the reason for the decision it only makes sence to remake the game that WE will be the most hyped for.
What a perfect day to commemorate Mario RPGs, with the remake of the first one releasing today AND Mario and Luigi celebrating its 20th anniversary today. My current favorite is Bowser’s Inside Story, but I am sure that that will change next year when I play Thousand-Year Door for the first time!
Partners in Time: My worlds aren't connected. GVG: Terrible. You're going on 10th place. The two first Paper Mario games: Our worlds aren't connected either. GVG: OMG! YOU BOTH DESERVE THE TOP 2 SPOTS!
My personal rankings: 12: Sticker Star 11: Color Splash 10: Paper Jam 9: Super Mario RPG 8: Origami King 7: Partners In Time 6: Super Paper Mario 5: Paper Mario 64 4: Superstar Saga 3: Bowser's Inside Story 2: Dream Team 1: Thousand Year Door
My favorite will always be Super Paper Mario, because not only does it have an interesting story, but it also introduced me to one of my favorite characters of all time: Mimi. Her personality is intriguing to say the least, she can shapeshift into any person she wants, she has an obsession with rupees, and she has one of the coolest necksnaping transformations I've ever seen in a video game. Besides that, I really do hope that Nintendo plans an HD remake of this game because cmon, TTYD is getting a remake. So it only makes sense that SPM also gets a remake, sometime in the future hopefully. TTYD is great and all, but I'll always appreciate SPM for what it has to offer.
@@GreenDbz I'm glad I'm not the only one. Let's just hope Nintendo does a remake of this game, like how they did it with TTYD. Now, back to Merlee's Mansion I go. *mimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimi*
I think Brandon's personal ranking is definitely closest to mine - while Super Mario RPG is maybe a little low (I'd rank it above Dream Team at least, if not Superstar Saga), I think the group list underrates Bowser's Inside Story by a good bit. It's definitely my second favorite of this Mario subgroup, right behind Thousand Year Door (which is my favorite... game of all time, let alone Mario RPG), and if you catch me at the right time I might even argue it's a better game considering its pacing is much more consistent. Besides that minor criticism, great video!
BiS would be third for me, behind Dream Team (hot take) and TTYD. Of all the games, I think BiS is the best realized/executed. To me, there isn't really anything wrong with the game or something that explicitly needs improvement. It's just a great game with little to no age.
Don't get me wrong, Partners in Time isn't my favorite mario rpg at all, but it's definitely better than Color Splash and Origami King. For one, it's actually an RPG! It has so much more going for it than either of those two games.
Dream Team is my second favorite behind TTYD, despite the pacing not being great. Loved everything else about the game. I'm more attached to PiT than most because it was my first ML game and my second of the RPGs after TTYD. I have a lot of nostalgia for it.
I think PiT has excellent tone, it's moody and otherworldly in comparison to the other ones. I really think the only letdown is the gameplay, which is too focused on using items (rather than the excellent bros moves)
Partners in time should low-key be higher My ranking btw (not including ones i haven't played) 1. Dream team 2. TTYD 3. Superstar saga 4. Partners in time 5. Paper mario 64 6. Origami king 7. Mario RPG (Havent played the rest)
As someone who grew up with Bowser's Inside Story and is currently playing ttyd, so far the latter is not only my favorite rpg but one of my favorite games ever.
for me it's (from worst to best) Paper Mario: Sticker Star Paper Mario: Origami King Paper Mario: Color Splash Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga Paper Mario (the original) Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope (yes these are more strategy based than RPGs but I'm counting them anyway) Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr. Journey Super Mario RPG (Remake - I'm putting it here for now, as I'm still playing it at the time of me writing this, but it could go higher once I finish it) Mario and Luigi: Dream Team Super Paper Mario Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time (this game is so underrated, I love Princess Shroob as a villain, I grew up with it so it's probably why I love it so much and it's literally my first Mario and Luigi game I ever played, even the first Mario rpg I played) Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story (the remake is good too but the side mode isn't very good therefore I prefer the original over the remake) Super Mario RPG (original) and Thousand-Year Door I've never played, even tho I own the original RPG game on my Wii U, just never gotten around to it, and when I heard the remake was coming I purposely waited til the remake came out, so I could go in as blind as possible, maybe I check out the original at a later point either it's on my Wii U or whenever (hopefully) it comes to the NSO but I'm looking forward to experience the Thousand-Year Door remake
The OG SMRPG was my first RPG so I have a strong attachment to it, I have the remake and I will enjoy it and with all the quality of life improvements and of course those boss rematches. TTYD is my 2nd favorite, the OG Superstar Saga is my 3rd favorite followed by PM64 as my 4th and SPM as my 5th.
I'm SO shocked to see Partners In Time below Color Splash. Words don't do justice for how much I disagree. But overall, good list. Especially #1, even though it's obvious what it is, I don't know if there will ever be a Mario RPG as good as #1. 🤣
Hottake but TTYD is genuinely a downgrade from 64 with the exception of graphics. I do respect you though for putting SSS above BiS as I was always more of a SSS guy.
1. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars 2. Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door 3. Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time 4. Paper Mario 5. Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam 6. Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story 7. Super Paper Mario 8. Mario & Luigi: Dream Team 9. Paper Mario: The Origami King 10. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga 11. Paper Mario: Color Splash 12. Paper Mario: Sticker Star
Thank You for putting Sticker Star at the very bottom where it belongs. Man the disappointment that entered my body when I got 5 hours in. That game made me wish Thousand Year Door was out as a remake. Glad we’re finally getting it though.
Bowser's Inside Story at 5th?! OOF. That absolute gem goes gets 2nd in my book. Slight hot take, I'd put Paper Mario 64 1st and Thousand Year Door 3rd. My only reason being I've replayed PM64 countless times and TTYD only twice. Maybe that will change with the remake. But PM64 is where I began my Mario RPG adventure on Christmas Eve the year it came out. It may not have the most big jokes, but I find it a very wholesome adventure and Bowser honestly feels like a legit threat on par with his role in Galaxy 1 and 2. Bowser's Inside Story makes my insides hurt from laughing so much. It's non stop humor and the writing and characterisation of Bowser is even better than TTYD imo. That menacing SHOWTIME before each battle, the kaiju style fights, meat to heal and the music is AMAZING! Can you tell I love Bowser hahaha!
I’m sorry, but I can’t, in any good faith, rank Partners in Time among the weaker RPGs. It’s still better than Color Splash and Origami King for me. I loved it and while I wouldn’t say it’s as strong as BIS or Dream Team, it’s still a top tier Mario & Luigi game.
PIT isn't all that great. The big issue is has is it's linearity, broken item bros., no content or side fetch whatsoever, complicated and sometimes gripping button layout on each bros., the baby counterpart are underutilized and the story makes zero sense. Also the game lags sometimes.
How is Mario Rabbids not on this list? The battle mechanics imo is one of the best out of the bunch. The story isn’t to strong for both but I’d argue Sparks of Hope has one of the, if not the best battle mechanics of them all.
I guess it's not turn based like or something. But neither is Super. But Mario + Rabbids does have RPG mechanics into it. So yeah. Should've been somewhere.
I'd say it advertised itself more like a strategy game, ala XCOM. It wouldn't surprise me that it has more RPG elements, but I'm not sure that's widely known amongst those who didn't play it.
Partners in time so low is incomprehensible. Also while I agree about Sticker Star being the worst Mario rpg, there's more to it and Color Splash than just their battle system, which is the only thing you seem to care about despite these games focusing more on the gameplay outside battles
If _Super Paper Mario_ incorporated the concept of flipping in 3D in a traditional turn-based RPG à la _Thousand-Year Door,_ I think it would be viewed in higher regard than it did when it initially released. Implemented well, the game as a whole would be fantastic. I love _Super Paper Mario,_ it’s my favourite of the trilogy. However, the side-scroller approach-to me-was not well fleshed-out.
I knew TTYD would be #1 and PM64 being #2. Personally for me I would switch the two. I have always preferred PM64 to TTYD. I love the characters, story, design so much more. I do wish we got a PM64 remake over TTYD as I think it deserves it more, but I am excited for the remake regardless.
The dream team slander in these comments is crazy. Anyway, I’d say this is a pretty great ranking. The only issue with it that I have is partners in time below colour splash. I refuse to believe that the game with arguably worse combat than sticker star is a better game than Partners in time, which was a solid game through and through.
Played probably close to 100 hours of superstar saga as a kid. I remember the first time I beat the final boss; I had so much trouble but finally figured out the strategy after so many attempts. 11/10 game
I'd probably put TOK over Dream Team but other than that, this list is pretty spot on for me. Origami King is frustratingly close to being truly great but it's held back by its one note puzzle combat and restrictive character designs. It otherwise has the best exploration, art style, music and is even one of the better written games in the series, not too far off from TTYD even at least with its character writing. If it just leaned harder into being an RPG or jeven full adventure game, it could've been great but it's in an awkward in between which is just "kinda good".
I know this is an opinion piece but Partners In Time is objectively the best of the Mario & Luigi games. I sincerely cannot believe it ranked so low here. 😅
Partners in time being so low just saddens me. It’s one of my favorite of all the rpgs, and one that I actually replayed more than Inside story. It’s not perfect that’s very true, but it definitely does not deserve to be put below color splash.
Wasn't it actually that the US version came out first, and when it was released for other regions it was made easier? Regardless yeah, the American version of PiT is just a worse game due to arbitrarily high enemy health. The combat is good but everything takes SO LONG to kill
Yeah like SS, PiT also released in NA first. And like SS, the game was made easier internationally. But unlike SS which was more balanced. PiT in US had enimies with high HP and DEF where everywhere else they had higher POW and SPEED.
Enjoyed the Video.. I have never played any of those games execpt Mario RPG... and I just got it and beat it when it came out on switch.. I had always wanted to play it but missed out on the SNES... I now have 5 of the games you listed on my wish list to get and play. Have a great holiday!
I gotta say, I wasn’t feeling a good chunk of this list, but Brandon’s list on its own knocks it out of the park! The only thing I’d switch is Superstar Saga and Super Paper Mario!
I don’t think any of the Mario RPGs are bad. I have played other RPGs that are much less fun that Paper Mario Sticker Star honestly. As far as the list I can respect it. I think for me personally I enjoyed Paper Jam and Origami king more then Color Splash and Super Paper Mario.
Obligated comment about Partners in Time being undeservedly low and should be higher In all seriousness, i think one of the biggest strengths that the m&l series has compared to paper Mario and other rpgs is that we get to see Mario and Luigi in unique scenarios but specifically fun interactions alongside other established characters. And PiT is the best in this regard, rivaling if not better than Bowser’s inside story. Not only does it have the darkest and most ominous story that a Mario game has had, but we also get to see Mario and Luigi basically be father figures. It’s fucking adorable and hilarious seeing the bros trying and failing to take care of the babies. And I never imagined I’d get to see Mario as a character act like a dad but it’s goddamn peak
Partners in time gets too much flak. The story is fun, combat is some of the best, and got some banger songs
It's ok. But compared to the other series, it's the weakest one.
@@jaretco6423 it's probably top 2 in Mario & Luigi series for me

Man, partners in time is so under-rated imo, it's my favourite in the series. TTYD is still the best RPG overall of course
I totally respect the TTYD opinion, but for some reason, I prefer the original Paper Mario. Maybe the TTYD remake on Switch will change my mind.
My favorite of the Mario and Luigi series is actually Partners in Time! I thought for the introduction of the series on the DS, it was really well done, utilizing all 4 face buttons on the DS is really smart. The enemies are also really well designed and I enjoyed the story a lot.
I STILL think to this day that Alpha Dream should have remade that on 3DS instead of Bowsers Inside Story.
I don’t understand how it’s so low on the list
@@plooper14Right? It easily beats Color Splash and Origami for me. Probably Dream team too, that game was a slog for me…

@@paulgilbert5278 bingo
ttyd is my favorite because the environments are impure in a way that makes my brain swoon
I tell people the same thing, Paper Mario 64 is my favorite game as well! TTYD is definitively better, but the charm and magic that goes along with 64 is incomparable for me.
Holy shit, partners in time below origami king and color splash 😅
Makes no sense
Have you actually played Origami King, because honestly it should be higher on the list.
@@Scamandernah, the gameplay brings it down a lot. It's well placed.
Partners in Time behind Super Paper Mario, Color Splash, AND Origami King? Man, that hurts.
Super Paper Mario is goated
@@oaklbits1753partners in time is behind the greatest story ever told in a Mario game? Uh, yeah.
If you're a grown man who's hurt over another grown man not liking the same Mario games that you like, then you need help.
Not even origami king behind super paper mario 💀
The background music is SO quiet I didn´t even realize there was any until Super Paper Mario
Paper Jam is overhated. I enjoyed it a lot
Yes, I feel like that game is way ahead of its time.
@@esgarjimenez2273i played the remake for 50 hours and honestly ttyd is still better
Man.. GVG really lucked out getting Brandon and Dan on board. Great video man!
No YOUR GREAT Man 💪💪💪
My favorite is partners in time! I was actually really surprised to see it so far down and so many negatives about it
Putting Color Splash and Origami King higher than Partners in Time is hella disrespect. It deserves better.
i will not accept this Mario + Rabbids erasure
Also the GBC and GBA Mario Tennis and Golf games which everyone seems to forget are RPGs.
I disagree, it's a turn based strategy game more in the lines of xcom not a strategy rpg like fire emblem.
Its technically not an rpg to be fair. Its a strategy game first and foremost.
@@docc19 It's literally a SRPG
@docc19 they are definitely more RPG-like (as they are SRPG games) than Super Paper Mario, which made into the list.
I will not accept this Partners in time slander
@avocadeous yeah true, meh was harsh, i just think its a step down from the quality of the first three
Can't believe you put Bowser's inside story at #5
All the games listed ahead are still big favorites.
I dunno BIS had an entire cult
As in Bowsers inside story was Alphadream's bet
@@heavydonkeykong5190and bowser inside story outsold them all
Did you just put color splash above partners in time 💀
I'd personally put Partners in Time a bit higher, like maybe above Color Splash & Oragami King but below Super, but otherwise I agree with this list.
That's probably a much better placement, agree
Was surprised to see it that low considering the amount of charm I think it has
Putting Partners in Time below Color Splash is an insanely unpopular opinion. Weird take.
Legit insane putting
Paper Jam and Partners in Time lower than Color Splash.
Fr even the criticisms he mentioned don’t seem to line up with the rankings
Agreed. Paper Jam may be generic, but the gameplay is infinitely better and more fun than Color Splash
[I may be insane, but... ]My list btw would look like this:
1. Thousand Year Door (no surprise. I almost tried to be contrarian but I thought about the characters, the story, the world, etc. And just had to give it to it.)
2. Bowser's Inside Story (I actually have some issues here and there that I recall, like having less of the fun overworld traversal stuff, but the experience with this game was very enjoyable and a wild ride. Starlow also got to stick around in Dream Team for a reason. Fun companion character.)
3. Super Star Saga (100% will admit this one is here from bias and nostalgia. I have more of it for this game than the number 4 spot which would have gotten this otherwise. The fight in my mind was strong but it came out on top)
4. Mario RPG (fun, whimsical. Goofy story with a lot of heart and fun going for it. You can feel the Square DNA strongly here which has some downsides at times but overall it is a big up and I enjoy this game and the characters, even if I honestly feel the nostalgia and character designs overblown their actual depth out of proportion looking in)
5. Though Bowser benefits from being depicted as a goof ball)
6. Super Paper Mario (an enjoyable experience. A lot of fun characters and a beautifully touching storyline and main antagonist. I understand this was the start of the great divide in the fanbase and I see why but it still has soul)
7. Game actually crashed on me once, idk thought I'd mention.)
8. I lost my original copy of this game in an airplane trip alongside a few other ds games close to my heart ages ago 😢)
9. Origami King (I almost put this above Partners but when I thought about it, despite feeling a lot like a return to form, the great areas, music and personalities of the bosses despite their appearance as art tools, I can't give Origami King too much credit for simply rising up above the games preceeding it. It is as if it gets a boost from the past games being bad, which is fair but also looking at it on its own I still appreciate much of what it does story, character and world wise, but the combat falters greatly for me.)
10. You can't super blame the team for missing the heart of paper Mario either because this is the era of Paper Mario where the heart wasn't there either)
EX.
The only real reason it couldn't be lower is...)
12. It gets bonus he'll points for being the catalyst that helped make so many dull years after and both the paper Mario and Mario and luigi fambases suffer)
EX.
My list:
12. Paper Mario Sticker Star
11. Paper Mario colour splash
10. Paper Mario Origami King
9. Mario and Luigi Paper Jam
8. Super Paper Mario
7. Mario and Luigi Dream Team
6. Mario and Luigi Partners in time
5. Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga
4. Paper Mario N64
3. Mario and Luigi Bowser's Inside Story
2. Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door
1. Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars
Partners in time at 10 is a travesty! Anywho, thanks for the video =)
aaaabsolutely insane putting PiT so low
Exactly
PiT below Origami King? Helllll naw. PiT is Hard Mode SSS. And Origami King is just... bad.
Ain't no way they disrespected Partners in Time like that
Well he didn't say it was bad. Just not as good as the other series.
It’s under Color Splash. That’s disrespectful
My current favorite is Bowser’s Inside Story, but I am sure that that will change next year when I play Thousand-Year Door for the first time!

the partners in time disrespect is crazy.
Super Paper Mario has one of the best stories in all of video games. If it wasn’t a Paper Mario game it would be a cult classic
Who else is here after Mario & Luigi Brothership announcement?
LWTS FUCKINN GFOOO
My favorite will always be Super Paper Mario, because not only does it have an interesting story, but it also introduced me to one of my favorite characters of all time: Mimi. Her personality is intriguing to say the least, she can shapeshift into any person she wants, she has an obsession with rupees, and she has one of the coolest necksnaping transformations I've ever seen in a video game. Besides that, I really do hope that Nintendo plans an HD remake of this game because cmon, TTYD is getting a remake. So it only makes sense that SPM also gets a remake, sometime in the future hopefully. TTYD is great and all, but I'll always appreciate SPM for what it has to offer.
same. super paper mario is my fav
@@GreenDbz I'm glad I'm not the only one. Let's just hope Nintendo does a remake of this game, like how they did it with TTYD. Now, back to Merlee's Mansion I go. *mimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimimi*
The disrespect to Partners in Time, I do not accept.
Back when it was recent, saying Dream Team was the best was not a hot take. Man, where did the years go?
DT & PIT are some of the weakest Mario & Luigi games. There not bad. But they aren't as good as others.
PiT’s issues are magnified due to it having middle child syndrome. DT is more underrated and I think it can hang with SS and BIS even with its flaws
Partners in time should low-key be higher

Paper Mario: Origami King
Paper Mario: Color Splash
Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam
Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga
Paper Mario (the original)
Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions
Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope (yes these are more strategy based than RPGs but I'm counting them anyway)
Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr. Journey
Super Mario RPG (Remake - I'm putting it here for now, as I'm still playing it at the time of me writing this, but it could go higher once I finish it)
Mario and Luigi: Dream Team
Super Paper Mario
Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time (this game is so underrated, I love Princess Shroob as a villain, I grew up with it so it's probably why I love it so much and it's literally my first Mario and Luigi game I ever played, even the first Mario rpg I played)
Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story (the remake is good too but the side mode isn't very good therefore I prefer the original over the remake)
Super Mario RPG (original) and Thousand-Year Door I've never played, even tho I own the original RPG game on my Wii U, just never gotten around to it, and when I heard the remake was coming I purposely waited til the remake came out, so I could go in as blind as possible, maybe I check out the original at a later point either it's on my Wii U or whenever (hopefully) it comes to the NSO
but I'm looking forward to experience the Thousand-Year Door remake
Partners in time I’m convinced was only placed so low as some sad gambit for rage bait
partners in time is easily top 3 (my favorite mario and luigi game tbh), way better than color splash and origami king 💀
Hottake but TTYD is genuinely a downgrade from 64 with the exception of graphics. I do respect you though for putting SSS above BiS as I was always more of a SSS guy.
Personally, I prefer Partners over Color Splash despite the missed opportunities with the time travel stuff.
1. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
2. Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door
3. Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
4. Paper Mario
5. Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam

I disagree that PIT is worse than Color Splash or Origami King. Also I like Color Splash more than Origiami King. The rest of the list is perfect.
M&L: Partners in Time before Color Splash and Origami King? Yeah, no.
Origami King. I can get behind. But yeah. Color Splash isn't better than Partners in Time and I don't even like PIT as well.

ADVENTURES OF LOLO 1 AND 2
Thank You for putting Sticker Star at the very bottom where it belongs.
Hearing so many praise for PiT in the comments make me kind of hype to give it a try myself.
PIT isn't all that great. The big issue is has is it's linearity, broken item bros., no content or side fetch whatsoever, complicated and sometimes gripping button layout on each bros., the baby counterpart are underutilized and the story makes zero sense. Also the game lags sometimes.
PiT does not lag. Unless you’re playing on emulator.
Superstar Saga, Thousand Year Door, and the original Paper Mario are all great! Everyone should give each one of these games a go!
Partners in time so low is incomprehensible.
Also while I agree about Sticker Star being the worst Mario rpg, there's more to it and Color Splash than just their battle system, which is the only thing you seem to care about despite these games focusing more on the gameplay outside battles
Sticker Star is a great puzzle solving game outside of battle
Jon: Super Mario RPG It is the only one just for me
Super Paper Mario is one of Nintendo's most underrated gems. It was disliked for what it wasn't, but I love it for what it is.
Tbh I dislike SPM not because of it being different than the first two Paper Mario games, but because of its bad level design.
Dream Team gets slept on way too much.
Im probably the only one who thinks TyD is overrated as heck. But hey at least the remake will make it look not as ugly and that's a plus.
Played probably close to 100 hours of superstar saga as a kid. I remember the first time I beat the final boss; I had so much trouble but finally figured out the strategy after so many attempts. 11/10 game
Great video and fantastic reference to the Wii shopping channel update day song. Top notch stuff.
Dream Team is closer to Superstar Saga than Origami King is to 64 or TTYD so it makes sense.
Bowsers Inside Story at number 5?! This man doesnt deserve my respect
SMRPG > Paper Mario > TTYD > the rest of them
I think you nailed it! I might swap 4 & 3.... but that's mostly it. Great job! Especially on the top 2!
I know this is an opinion piece but Partners In Time is objectively the best of the Mario & Luigi games. I sincerely cannot believe it ranked so low here. 😅
Well he didn't say it was bad. Just not as good as the other Mario & Luigi titles. In which I agree. PIT is just dull and not all that great.
putting mario and luigi dream team below top #3 is CRAZY
Bowsers Inside story deserves 1st place tbh, I found TTYD to be extremely over rated and didn't really find it more entertaining than the M&L games
I couldnt really get into Thousand Year Door, but I loved Super Paper Mario
Partners in time being so low just saddens me. It’s one of my favorite of all the rpgs, and one that I actually replayed more than Inside story. It’s not perfect that’s very true, but it definitely does not deserve to be put below color splash.
Jon's order is the correct order.
Channel name should be narcissistic vibes
It’s officially the day to play the Mario RPG remake and the 20th anniversary of Mario & Luigi!
Excellent video Brandon!
Jon ranked Partners in Time the highest of the crew? Makes sense, the enemy health bars weren't arbitrarily doubled in the earlier EU release.
I love how Nintendo saw the success of TTYD and thought, "Yeah, that was good. Very good. Let's never do anything like that ever again."
Good list, BUT: Partners in Time and Dream Team are as good as Superstar Saga
This is the best ranking I've seen. Awesome.
Remember this is list is all opinions. Lets be Civil.
Enjoyed the Video.. I have never played any of those games execpt Mario RPG... and I just got it and beat it when it came out on switch.. I had always wanted to play it but missed out on the SNES... I now have 5 of the games you listed on my wish list to get and play. Have a great holiday!
Bro left out the Mario + Rabbids games and thought I wouldn’t notice.
i agree with most on the list, although i wold prefer super paper mario to be higher on the list
Partners in time is fantastic and should be way higher
I gotta say, I wasn’t feeling a good chunk of this list, but Brandon’s list on its own knocks it out of the park! The only thing I’d switch is Superstar Saga and Super Paper Mario!
And now brothership! What a year!!
Bowser’s Inside Story should be higher than Mario RPG. Otherwise great list
I don't care what anyone says, Partners in time was amazing. My first title in the M&L saga.
Having played every game here, I find Mario RPG over Bowser's Inside Story crazy.. but to each their own!
For my $ my ranking would be
12: PMSS
11: PMOK
10: PMCS
9: SPM
8: MLPJ
7: MLDT
6: MLBIS
5: PM64
4: MLPIT
3: MLSS
2: PMTTYD
1: SMRPG
Obligated comment about Partners in Time being undeservedly low and should be higher
In all seriousness, i think one of the biggest strengths that the m&l series has compared to paper Mario and other rpgs is that we get to see Mario and Luigi in unique scenarios but specifically fun interactions alongside other established characters.
PARTNERS IN TIME IS INCREDIBLE!!! Not having it top 5 is a travesty.
I’m not even a big fan of Partners in Time but it’s definitely too low on this list
I think it's fine. It's above Sticker Star and Color Splash. That's important.
No it deserves higher. Mario and Luigi babysitting their infant selves is wholesome. And we can’t forget about the moody undertones
