Don't forget that you can decorate the 3DS menu with badges! You can even use the badges as custom icons for your folders!
Didn’t even need to click on the video to know what number one was going to be. I really hope the switch 2 has a home screen similar to the 3ds.
3DS was pretty much a given. Wii U and Wii are both also pretty nice with their own respective quirks, so I was sure they'd be #2 and #3, though the order wasn't certain.
Don't get your hopes up.
I was thinking the Wii home menu would be #1. I only played the 3ds a handful amount of times. A hand caught in a wood chipper.
ME TOO, ILL HAVE A PANIC ATTACK OF JOY :C
ME TOO, ILL HAVE A PANIC ATTACK OF JOY :C
The themes, the badges, the 3D icons. Apart from getting a bit slow as it went on, the 3DS menu is *chef's kiss*
Basic black
Basic white
“More themes to come”-2017
Pretty sure they never said "more themes to come"
@@ricln5464Yeah, there's been no firm indication of that ever happening. But I'm sure it was on the table, because otherwise why would both themes be called "basic"?
I'm actually surprised that we haven't seen special edition consoles or games come with specific themes, like the Zelda TOTK OLED console having a pre-installed Zelda theme, or inserting/downloading Mario Odyssey would give you a Mario theme. The former makes more sense, but the latter could have also been a nice add-on for customers.
@@leonro It's similar to how Super Mario Maker 2 has 3D World in that "Extra game styles" section which is both in plural and even has space for another item, so it seems reasonable to assume they'd add something there, but no...
@@MLennholm That was also probably going to be expanded via DLC, but I suspect one reason could be that Nintendo was unhappy with how the presumed Mario Odyssey game style was shaping up (not unique, movement not good, or some other reason) and they decided to scrap it, or they wanted to quickly move personnel to another project.
Sales could also be a factor, since Wii U's Mario Maker sold over 4 million units (+ another 3.7M on 3DS), so maybe they expected more than 8M on the Switch, given its install base. But I don't think this would have been THAT much of a factor.
@@leonronow that Wonder is out, maybe they can port that to maker 2
I love Jon's little hyperfixations that i feel i can deeply relate to.
The 3DS home menu is not only the best Nintendo home menu to me, but the best gaming UI I've ever used on ANY system! It's like, borderline perfection~
yeah, especially on the new 3ds which just makes everything snappier
So glad we have a folder for tropical freeze. You never know when you’re going to need to pull out a tropical freeze-like game!
You always need a copy of Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze in reach. You never know if it could save your life.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the TV control on the Wii U gamepad. Underrated feature I used all the time.
That just shows how important DKC Tropical Freeze is, it needs to have its own place
The 3DS truly was the pinnacle of Nintendo's home menu design. Some themes, like the Xenoblade and Metroid: Samus Returns themes, had music that would play in the background, giving the system even more life! Plus, many of them had unique sound effects for moving the cursor, opening an app, and even, like you all mentioned, sound effects for opening the system after being in sleep mode. I really hope that the Switch's successor has a really nice home menu like this.
It's amazing how something as simple as the DS's home menu was revolutionary to me as a kid. I think it was the first console I owned with a proper OS so even screwing around in the system settings or doodling in Pictochat was just as fun to me as the actual games sometimes. Itll always be high up for me in that regard
Jon just has this hidden talent at putting out videos that make me say "Holy moley!"
Really hope that Switch 2 has a mix between the 3DS and Switch's menus. The speed snd efficiency of the Switch, with the personality and themes of the 3DS.
Why isn't Molemania on the GB Online app yet? Wasn't it co-directed by the mystery man who did DK 94 and Miyamoto?
Prior to eating an earthworm, a mole will squeeze it along its length with its front paws, to remove any exterior dirt and also to squeeze out any dirt in the worm’s gut. They also will store earthworms, sometimes by the hundreds, for later consumption.
Just Jonner (Jon Banger) after Jonner this last week
Only Jon could make a Nintendo systems menu ranking and include ones that don't have system menus like the SNES and GBA...
That takes dedication.
John once again answering questions I didn't need an answer to.
Wonderful.
12:15 omg Torigoth (Night) from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 my beloved 😊 🥰
it's perfect that it also played through the 3DS section, it's the music I use as my modded 3DS' home theme
I've never seen the Satellaview menu before, it looks so cool!
And the 3DS home menu had MUSIC AND SOUND EFFECTS! And all of them were customizable through themes AND STICKERS AND 3D DIORAMAS (although some developers were lazy and didn’t really do much with them) AND A DIGITAL MANUAL FOR EVERY GAME
The Wii U menu & Wara Wara Plaza will always hold a special place for me. Great video Jon!
EmRizzle!?
Wii U and 3ds era menus goes hard.
Jon i've been following your videos since the nintendo life days. Please, dont ever stop making videos. Im always excited to see what you have to say about games, history and stuff
It had so much style! It had so much grace!
It had customized face plates!
I was by no means expecting that voice. It is phenomenal and to be quite frank, an overwhelmingly therapeutic voice lol.
Sometimes I get tripped up going back to old consoles and trying to go to the home menu lol
Also for me, what I miss most on switch isn’t themes or a unique style, but the music. The Wii music is so cozy 😊
You didn't mention the badges from Nintendo Badge Arcade on 3DS. I know they weren't a default thing, but they added even more customization and it was always so fun to see the different things you and your friends could make with them.
Game Boy Colour has another feature on the loading screen not mentioned - different combinations of button pushes change the limited colours applied to a game boy game.
The switch menu is great... after you change the menu with custom firmware
He completely forgot that the 3DS themes also had original music for some of them. For example the fates theme add some of the actual Ambiance game music from the game playing in the background just by hanging out on the menu
You forgot to mention the New 3DS specifically has a game included in its internet browser too. If you play the Mario jingle with touch, you get an arkanoid like game.
This just made me miss miiverse. Literally the best version of social media to ever exist.
Jon, I love how you also have the Dreamcast theme on the 3DS too. Also I would love to see you rank every PlayStation Home Menu, if only because I'm curious about your feelings on the XMB.
Great list, personally really hoping the next system combines the Switch’s efficiency with the aesthetics of the 3DS/Wii U’s menus. By the way did you know that hard working moles are good moles?
I actually find the Switch’s menu to be kind of inefficient in a weird way, and that’s through lack of organization. All the games are there, yeah, but it’s just whatever was last used. And typically I have my systems Home Screen customized with some frequents and some games on the backlog, and the folders are there as well. It makes it so when I’m in the mood to play something it’s very easy to look around my library. The Switch just dumps everything at my feet and in order to get to the folders I have to go through a menu to get to the menus. I would also like for it to have a better theme but it’s the Switch’s lack of user freedom that really hurts it for me. I don’t often find myself going through my games on Switch anymore because it’s just not a pleasant experience. Maybe a theme would help by making it feel more lively but with these two elements working together it kinda kills the Switch menu for me. Moles.
For me, the Wii U has one of the best menus I've ever seen on a console, it was complete but at the same time had the Nintendo charm like the Wii or 3DS. The only downside was that it was a little slow, but after the patches I have to say that it never bothered me again.
The thumbnails are always so yassified, I love it
12:36 I got Jumpscared seeing myself in a GVG Video
Jon is such a delight to watch i swear 😭
I really really REALLY want the Switch 2 to have more personality. Music, background animations, software descriptions, easier access to the Mii maker, 3DS/Wii U home app layout, etc.
Yah, that layout make more sense now that everybody have a smartphone. Besides, I think they should still have a quick play menu like the ones on the switch, maybe cartridge could even boot without menu.
@@QnjtGWonQNqVsbYyzjx4 Make it a setting in the system settings and call it something like "Retro Mode", since old consoles used to do exactly that
Switch menu would at least be functional if they added a one-button shortcut to get to groups. It took forever for them to add groups, and they're functionally useless because it takes so long to even navigate to the groups menu.
It's not that bad if you just press left on the first game in your main row to reach All Games immediately
You could set multiple active themes on the 3DS, so every time you open the system, a different theme would appear!
Such unique content! Thank you Jon! :)
I mostly agree with the listing, but the Wii takes the number one spot imo. The channel aesthetic with the surprisingly fleshed out focus on music elevates the whole experience. It was so iconic that even the homebrew channel and USB loader apps followed suit. 3DS had that customizable element to it, which is cool, but it felt sterile compared to the Wii
The 3DS really is the best Nintendo system when it comes to personalization features. I will always love my 3DS and that's just one of them
LOVE these kinds of videos!
This video perfectly sums up my feeling towards some nintendo systems. I miss the personality of the 3DS and Wii U interface
I agree on the 3DS! And a additional information is that this was the only system to receive a major UI improvement changing a lot of the look and feel. I don't dislike the Switch because is really fast and straightforward. But I do miss at least different colors AND the splash screen that we've had with Wii U. I love the 3D animation on 3DS as well, but the splash was so simple to implement....
Oh boy i sure do love the character in Super Mario Partys 15th characters slot.
I would spend a shocking amount of time just organizing my 3DS home menu every few months, just because I found it fun to do. That's a sign of a great menu!
Wii definitely has the slickest control scheme, though! I wish smart TV devices like Roku had pointer controls. Their remotes used to have Gyroscopes in them that certain games used for pointer-controls, but no menus used them! Could have made navigating and typing on it a dozen times easier.
The 3DS is my favorite menu of *any* console. It is so easy to organize with way more customization options than any other game console. Wii U too.
The badge arcade made the 3DS highly customizable
Hell yeah, now this is my type of video. Whimsu also did an excellent video ranking every console home menu ever.
Jon's videos are always a smash. Just chill vibes and a pure love for games and consoles.
An underrated feature of the Wii is that you can save your Miis inside the Wii remote to take them places. Never seen the save file animations or SD screen though.
I think the Wii has the most memorable menu but 3DS is probably the best.
Moles tails prower.
Jon exists to make the videos nobody else on the internet is brave enough to.
Also the 3DS had Badge Arcade for further customisation!
P.S. moles
Also, 3DS had badges! I had some fun with those :)
Happy birthday, Jon!
Although the GBA is just the jingle, I have to say that puts it higher than many for me. That little jingle just makes me happy.
Gamecube would be much higher for me
I honestly think the 3DS might be the best Nintendo system because of it's menu and customization alone. The switch is a close second because the games are so amazing but I really hope the "Switch 2" brings back a lot of 3DS customization
I like that you even included ones that don’t have cool home screens like NES and Super Nintendo, thats actually funny
Videos like this are what elevates GVG from great to amazing
Mole Mania is pretty freaking great, btw
I’ve got a mole on my foot, but I promise you, Jon, I won’t be manic about it.
I still find it disappointing that the Wii had animated game covers in 2006 and the Switch doesn’t in 2024…
I just started playing Mole Mania yesterday. Excellent video. Now get your spy camera out of my apartment.
danggg this video was so good, we need some mole
Modded 3DS with custom themes is the best.
Currently have a TOTK theme
One small correction: on the Wii U menu, you can control it without the gamepad. You need to press X or 1 on your controller of choice and it will put the game selection on the big screen.
3:17 also, if you press directional buttons with the A or B (can't remember exactly and can't confirm right now) you can change the color palette. :)
Did you know the star nosed mole has more than 25,000 minute sensory receptors in touch organs, known as Eimer's organs, with which this hamster-sized mole feels its way around? With the help of its Eimer's organs, it may be perfectly poised to detect seismic wave vibrations.
Surprised you counted the 64DD and Satellaview, but the Super Game Boy, SGB2, and Game Boy Player got left out! Each had their own menus for borders, colors, and the like.
This, this is real content. Thank you GVG
I wish Nintendo had've continued with the channel theme on their newer consoles, as the Wii was a console you could (and would) turn on every day to do things like check the news or the weather. Presenting useful info on the home screen without needing to go into any apps paved the way for things like widgets on phone home screens, but also made you want to jump into those games because you could see when the last time you weighed in on Wii Fit or ongoing competitions in Mario Kart Wii
gamecube definitely has the coolest aesthetic
New Jon content oh flip yeah
Home menues are one thing, but to me no boot-up screen with ever beat GBA where the letters are literally flying in your face and ending on thaat iconic **pling**
You forgot to mention that the gameboy colors boot up screen is actually kind of a home screen where you can change the color preset of the games via the buttons during the boot up sequence. :)
Great stuff!
This was a really cool idea, and I really enjoyed it. WHY DID YOU RANK VIRTUAL BOY SO LOW THOUGH
I played Mole Mania for the first time ever a few years ago (as somebody who grew up in the GB/GBC/GBA era) and loved it so much! Possibly my favorite puzzle game ever made. Would love a remake or sequel.
I’m pleased with the complete video.
Mole Mania is great! I picked it up on the 3DS gb vc (so many acronyms) after learning Miyamoto was behind it... Incredibly underrated lil' puzzle game.
I fancy the 3DS', especially after the intro of themes and badges
The blue LED on the Wii was approximately 1200 Lumens and I can be visible from space.
I think we can all *dig* the number one there.
Yes, I made that pun just for Jon.
The Wii Home Menu is so nostalgic to me because of the music but the 3DS one is best because of the themes. I hope the next console will have a Home Menu similar to the prototype Switch Home Menu
I think they should have just used the 3DS home on the switch. So beautiful
There is one other issue with the Wii U, only but a few of us have run into. There is a literally ICON limit on the Wii U. So if you have a large HD for Wii U digital stuff, you may run into the fact you can't have that many games on one device. So you may have to split up the HD to multiple and swap between them in order to access other games.
So I tend to have a library where I can't have them all on one HD at once, even though the HD is more than capable of holding my entire library.
Ah the 3DS home menu, my beloved. Now I want a Satellaview style menu with miis though
For GBC, I’d like to submit changing colour themes (pressing a direction and/or holding B) on the boot up screen as a bonus. Nothing else does that from what I’m aware (at least not a Nintendo platform).
We're really boutta go the whole generation with no new themes added😂
I never owned a Wii U but from everything I’ve seen it’s my number one spot hands down. Always seemed to me like it took the Wii that I loved and expanded it. After that I see the 3DS, Wii, and DSi.
To me the Wii takes 1st place because it is just insanely unique and fun to browse. The animated banners, the subtle background sounds just make it the best menu in all of gaming. Not to mention the most iconic shop tune.
sometimes even when I don't care about the content that guy's voice is hypnotic!
dont need to watch, 3ds clears, but i will watch it anyways, for you jon
Great list! I generally agree with this between the systems I own. Some home screens are certainly better than others according to personal taste; however, it felt novel getting to experience these as they released. The only downside to the Nintendo 3DS home screen is, when mine rotates to the Xenoblade Chronicles theme based on its main menu, it takes minutes to boot up any game (because I'm vibing emotionally). I jest. Not related to the home screen necessarily: Something I find neat about launching certain Virtual Console, Ambassador Program, or DS backward-compatible titles, holding [Start] + [Select] meanwhile will open the game in its native resolution. Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles even get a border based on those systems. Give it a try!
Nintendo has to know how many people want more themes. Even if the present Switch never receives more than Basic White and Basic Black, it's my hope its successor will debut with expanding variety. It would be ideal if more could be "purchased" via Platinum Coins like icons are now, but it wouldn't surprise me, either, if they would be bought. Themes aren't "required" to enjoy a system, but I can't deny I feel nice when I open my 3DS to a surprise.
16:44 *boredom, efficiency can have personality, but something I do hope from Nintendo is to bring the non-game apps from the Wii, Wii U, and DS series back, as well as improve backwards compatibility
Ikr, the Switch UI seems so devoid of life and it put me off immediately.
@@jonathanwilliams1271 the 3DS shows that efficiency can have personality
For me it's between the Wii and 3ds so I completely agree with you there. The GameCube menu is still a close 3rd though and that's just my nostalgia talking. Great video
I *died* when I saw the "Forbidden Games" folder group and another solely for Tropical Freeze🤣
I've seen a gallery of those N64 logos that points out which ones are colored incorrectly.
