Max Verstappen Onboard | F1 Old Spa-Francorchamps (1966)

  • Here's an F1 2020 onboard lap around the old Spa-Francorchamps layout with Max Verstappen in his Red Bull RB16 challenger.
The old Spa layout was used between 1939-1978, and was 14.1km long. Going around this track with a modern F1 car means that it's mostly flat out throughout the majority of the circuit, with very very few turns and corners through the whole circuit. It was interesting to see the differences compared to the modern layout, one of them being the Eau Rouge and Raidillon corners which required me brake more compared to the modern layout.

F1s of the '60s were basically tinfoil-made bathtubs suspended on four motorbike wheels with a 500 HPs. engine running on high octane, hyperflammable petrol strapped in their back, bottlecaps for brakes and no wings (and no downforce), let alone robotised gearbox or electronic driving aids, to help you. And they raced on this kind of track, such as this old SPA which makes the Nordschleife looking like a marble track in comparison.
Driving in Formula 1 in those years basically required complete indifference to end your career whether dead or alive... Surviving was a success in itself.

Adding to everything that was already commented, it is worth noting how Raidillon has been smoothed over the years; I think that bringing back this older version of the corner would also bring back some sort of challenge to the drivers navigating the curve, and it would also help slowing down the speeds carried trough that zone (although, it would be at the expense of runoff area right after Eau Rouge).

Old Spa would destroy modern F1 engines. The engines powering the f1 cars that raced at Old Spa were the Chads. Modern F1 engines are the Cheems.

3- It was already a show without the stupid DRS.

Seeing how easily the RB handled Masta, the most dangerous corner in all of Formula One at the time, was frightening. I just got off playing GPL before watching this, and getting your braking just right for Masta is terrifyingly difficult, especially where doing it even _slightly_ wrong would cost you _seconds_ per lap.

Hitting only between 330 and 340 km/h on such elongated full throttle passages is pretty lame, isn't it? I mean in 2004 F1 reached 370 in Monza! So I would expect some 380 to 390 on such long full-throttle passages.
