  • You can grow petunias from cuttings. Growing things from scratch is so rewarding and when it is this easy and budget-friendly it is doubly so.
    I can fill tons of containers, tubs and hanging baskets and not spend a lot of money.
    I start with an inexpensive 6 pack of petunias and start many more!

    I loved this. Straight to the point, all accessible tools, dont have to break the bank, and not shoving a certain product down your throat. If it wasnt for her having bears in her greenhouse l would have thought she was a Texan 😂♥️ thank you for the help. Ive read about 30 articles and several videos and this was finally what l needed

      Most folks wouldn't believe this is California either, they think Cali is all beaches and oceanfront, not mountains with forest critters wreaking havoc. 😉 Thank you for the compliment, that is my aim, keep it budget-friendly and attainable.

    Thanks for video. I'm only just starting to grow Petunias so your video was informative, helpful and interesting. I also liked the fact that you've been growing them for some years and still have the same equipment
    Very encouraging
    Thanks

      So nice of you. Petunias are a great plant to grow, usually fairly easy in most climates. I prefer ones that reseed themselves too, I love to grow on a budget.

    Thank you for showing us how! I would love to save lots of money. Yes! I suppose you can find the rooting solution where you buy the flowers? It's finally showing Spring in Minnesota! In the lower 50's and climbing, to get to 80 degrees this weekend. The soil is only at 40 degrees. I know because we farm our land.

      click over to my blog post that is linked in the description box, I have a link to rooting hormone that works great for this. We were in the low 80s then rain struck today and it has been quite chilly but above freezing. For which I am thankful!

    Great video, love it. I just wanna know, which conditions (place) to keep the propagation while it's in rooting process? E.g dark place/ half shades or etc..

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse

      Bright light is great, find a spot that gets early morning sun then shade for the afternoon or diffused light.

    I tried twice to propagate my petunias from cuttings in the last two weeks, and both wilted =( I will watch again and take notes to see where I failed. After extensive reading I just want to see if you can help me clarify the ideal conditions for the cuttings, 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit?, Morning sun and afternoon shade, and do I need to add fertilizer? Thank you in advance for your help and for taking the time to respond to your viewers.

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They will wilt from shock before perking back up. During the heat of the summer I would keep them in shade until they recovered a bit more. Even morning sun can be a bit too much for them. The cover to keep in moisture is essential. They do not need any fertilizer, they can't use it anyways until they have roots. I hope this helps and I should go do more right now to see how they will do while it is so very hot. Take the cuttings in the early morning so they are well hydrated too.

  • @MariaRodriguez-lk5tq
    @MariaRodriguez-lk5tq 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    About how deep did you plant the cutting? 1.5 inch?
    Also, if I am going to try and root them directly into a hanging basket, about how far apart do you think I should put each cutting? @Flower Patch Farmhouse

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I usually aim for a couple inches or more which will give it several leaf nodes under the soil. I do believe they root from those leaf nodes. I will have to double check that this next season.

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  ปีที่แล้ว

      Zoning is not the determining factor as that does not tell me your climate conditions. You can do this now even outdoors if your temps are above freezing. Please see this video on Growing Zones: th-cam.com/video/aPBOapTBJIQ/w-d-xo.html or this blog post for more info on garden zones: www.flowerpatchfarmhouse.com/garden-by-zone/

    Its the middle of June and was wondering if i could do this now and have a pot of blooming petunias before summer is up? Thanks so for the video and do we water the cuttings and how long do we leave the cover on?😊

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So much depends upon your weather, you can get a lot of blooms before summer. And keep the cuttings moist but not wet. As far as the cover is concerned the answer to that depends on your humidity. If you are in an area with high humidity you won't need a cover but in a drier climate you would. How fast yours root can depend upon the variety as well so there is no direct answer, sorry. 🙂

    Hi, I know its a long time since you made ur video..but its great! Im over in England..we don't get much sun..we make up for it with rain..tho for a couple of weeks in summer its really hot.
    What I wanted to ask you is, how many cuttings can I take from 1 original petunia plant bought in a 6 pack? Also, do I have to wait intil its in flower..or has flowered to do so?
    Ive also been told that I can use honey instead of rooting poweder..as long as i sprinkle cinnamon around the bottom of the plant to ward off ants etc..what do u think?
    Finally, az with the oetunias, am I also able to use this method with other bedding and basket plants, ie, bizzie lizzies, geraniums, etc please?
    Would appreciate your advice ..and thank you so much for making the video..(tho its gonna be really hard cutting the flowers off! Lol)
    Nade x

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  ปีที่แล้ว

      Each six pack is different. You could cut each plant back completely and it would grow back in, you just get flowers later than you would when not cutting them. No you do not need to wait until they flower. Honey can be used as an antifungal but it won't accelerate rooting. The cinnamon is also an antifungal, bacterial treatment. I have a a video on zonal geranium cuttings (pelargoniums) and included a bit in this video too: th-cam.com/video/nkkE8VBMs84/w-d-xo.html. I have not taken cuttings from Busy Lizzies (impatiens) but you can also root them as well. I will have to do some this season and make a video on that for fun!

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Budworms are the worst! I usually just pick them off daily until I have eradicated the issue. And no I don't know how to prevent them without using chemicals which I don't. Some use a BT type spray which kills all caterpillars. I have too many butterflies that lay their eggs here so I don't use it.

    Are the root hormone and container on top a necessity for them to grow? I dont have either 😕

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The rooting hormone hastens the rooting process and lets you have better success but you can do it without. The dome keeps the humidity high so that the plant can keep moist until it produces roots to uptake water. See my rose propagation video: th-cam.com/video/QN6S-0jrygI/w-d-xo.html or this one: th-cam.com/video/bkGj4iWDEvg/w-d-xo.html for ways to make a propagation container from recycled materials. • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Last year I did take cuttings in Fall and root them and they did grow in the greenhouse well over winter. The ones I planted by my studio were those cuttings. But we had a fairly mild winter, I don't know if it would work in a colder region but it is worth a try.

    Honey is also a natural root hormone

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually it isn't a rooting hormone but it can combat some bacterias that can cause cuttings to rot before rooting.
