I remember seeing a video years ago at Walt Disney World on how they keep all of their hanging baskets, blooming and huge all of the time. They showed their drip system, and the origination of where all of the water comes from. Those hanging baskets receive a continuous flow of Diluted blue fertilizer every watering, that’s how they keep them so huge and so full of blooms. That was quite an eye-opener for me. I was just fertilizing about once a month and all of my stuff was so puny. I didn’t realize that those types of plants were such heavy feeders!
Wow... they do have incredible plantings at Disney. Most of the annuals that bloom through the whole season love extra fertilizer. The exceptions are usually begonias, euphorbia, grasses, impatiens, and a few others.

Disney also has a nursery where they grow everything for their parks. Not sure about Disney world, but Disneyland has a basement level where lots of the behind-the-scenes stuff goes on. Great video. Thanks for all the tips. We get hot summers where I live, so there's not much chance of overwatering. In fact, I had my husband screw drip trays to the bottoms of my baskets so they can soak up the runoff. I am trying Sluggo Plus this year for whatever is eating my petunias in the back yard. But I put down way more than you suggested so hopefully that doesn't hurt them. I still need to try fertilizer. This year I went with mixing my own soil (1/3 peat moss, 1/3 vermiculite, and 1/3 compost) and it seems to be a good mixture. For the compost, I use a few different ones to get a variety of nutrients, including worm castings. I purchased an 8ft stock tank and have it filled with perennials, bulbs, and some annuals. The tank is wrapped in a roll of bamboo to give it a more natural look. Then I surrounded it with pots filled with petunias and a few other annuals to give a layer of color. It's my own little Eden.
I can't thank you enough for this video!! So many questions that I had that were answered especially about the slug and bug killer. Only 2 or 3 pellets I had no idea that's how much you need. I have alot of earnings and the slug and bug killer did turn moldy on me. Thanks again
I’m so glad I found your channel today!!! I just plant petunias with calibrachoas on my landscape last weekend, now I will change it for another petunia 🙌🏻 Thank you for sharing this information!
Glad you watched. Calibrachoa sometimes do okay in the landscape, but if the pH isn’t right, they can look yellow and leggy and sad. Good luck with those petunias!
Good luck. Great looking petunias like a good bit of fertilizer, so feeding them often will help. If you visit an independent garden center, you can let them know you’re looking for Supertunias or other vigorous petunias and they can hopefully point you in the right direction. Gotta admit, Supertunias are easy for us to recommend because people have such good luck with them.
@NettasNursery I had good luck with them at the start but as time went by if you take the long part and tip it up they were all dead & scraggly looking underneath.

I've never had a pot just overflow of flowers. My plants have gone to seed and gotten "leggy". I saved this video to refer back too. Thank you!
It’s my fourth season growing my petunias from seed. Here’s a few things that have helped me. (I’m in climate zone 6a) I winter sow both my petunias and my pansies in February, usually around the third week of February. I moisten the soil and cover the containers with clear plastic. I also use slow-release and liquid fertilizer for my petunias. I dead-head them in the morning, right as I’m watering them. Then I prune back pretty hard in July-usually about 30 to 40 percent of the plant. It bounces back thicker and fuller than ever afterwards, and it tricks the plant into a longer bloom time. For anyone reading this that hasn’t grown petunias from seed-remember that the seeds must have light to germinate. Just moisten the growing medium and press them into the surface. Keep the soil consistently moist and exposed to sunlight. And pack your patience, because they do take their sweet time germinating.😂😂😂 But it’s all worth it in the end!
This is a FANTASTIC video! Thank-you for taking the time to so thoroughly explain everything. I was a petunia lover but had backed away from them the last couple of years because the deadheading was too time consuming. Also because I always get aphids, lots of aphids. Welcome to gardening 🎉 Watering can get challenging when it’s hot, dry, and/or windy. I live in San Diego, California and I have planted petunias. I don’t know how many times and they have never looked good. They have never flowered. I’ve even bought the hanging baskets that looked good when you bought them, but then look like crap. Two weeks later. I planted some seeds couple weeks ago and nothing happening. So I’m going to go to a real nursery and try to find some of the ones that you talked about and take your advice and see what happens.
Oooh im a little too excited to find this video and your channel. I have some purple million bells, geraniums and vinca on my front deck that always do pretty great, especially the geraniums. They get about 6 hours of morning to noon sun. Unfortunately, I'm in zone 7 around mid-oklahoma, so I've needed to experiment with what potted flowers do well in this heat and humidity. I think a drip system might be key for the heat here, but our only water spigot is in the back of the house at the entrance of the crawl space. That's a project I'll never be able to convince my husband to take on haha! Thank you for sharing your tips and information! You're a gem!
What a great video -- so much useful information. I am ready to up my petunia game. The new varieties are tougher than I thought they would be. I garden in dry rocky soil and we had a terrible drought last summer. I did some watering and fertilizing but not what you are recommending for optimal growth. The petunias bloomed until well into the fall although they didn't become as full and lush as they should. I can't wait to try growing them better. Any thoughts about using a timed-release fertilizer? I have a big garden and am not there all the time so doing a weekly fertilizing may be hard and I think that may be the difference between nice and spectacular petunias.
We’ve tried time-release fertilizer and it definitely made a difference. The important things to consider is that you need water to deliver the fertilizer to the roots AND the fertilizer degrades faster when temps are over 70 degrees (so you need to add it more frequently than what the package recommends). If you can use water soluble when you’re able and time-release as a backup, you’ll reach a good compromise.
Thank you for this helpful video! I just began gardening a couple years ago. Question: if I am planting my own ( one of the new varieties you recommended in a large pot), what type of soil should I buy? Thank you
@@lindagenovese1042 Regular potting soil will get the job done… one with pictures of flowers on the bag usually works. There are also “container” or “moisture control” mixes that hold water a little better; those can be helpful, especially if your container is in a spot that gets really hot or windy.
My petunias are in a self-watering hanging pot so hope the watering issue is OK for this 89 year old widow. I’ll do the finger method to see how the soil feels. Have you ever tried Spray-N-Grow? Pictures are very impressive. Thanks for your informative video.
Haven’t tried that product - I noticed you have to use it with regular fertilizer. Make sure you water from the top until the plant develops its roots (I usually wait 10-14 days) - then you can start using the self-watering feature.
Petunias can give you the best bang for your buck. However, some types of verbena, impatiens, salvia, argyranthemum, and lobularia can get massive. Let the folks at your local garden center know that you want vigorous baskets and they can let you know what might work.
Thanku so much, lots of info on these amazing, beautiful plants. Over here in Perth Western Australia our weather goes from 41°Celsius in summer to 18° Celsius winter 🙄 I go from too wet to too dry, drives me nuts😊 Thanks again for a really informative tutorial ❤
Could you name the variety of petunias again that don’t need to be deadheaded and don’t turn to slime if they get wet? Your video was awesome and really informative. Thank you.
@@gratefulketo2211 Only the Supertunias are from Proven Winners, the others mentioned are also self-cleaning but they are not Supertunias from Proven Winners.
I’d go with four of that variety (it’s got nice vigor), but I think most other people would recommend five to seven for a 14”. With more, they’ll get up to size faster. I’ve found planting fewer gets similar results… and requires a little less watering. Our 14” baskets with Surfinias, Waves, and/or Supertunias are already over the edge of the pot (each with four plants), so they’ll likely be 3 feet wide by Mother’s Day. If you’re not sure or you’re nervous they won’t fill in, plant five or six. You can always assess how they do, and reduce the number next year.
I have sprinkled granular miracle grow around my potted plants. Should I still continue to fertilize say every few weeks with liquid miracle grow? Also I got a Beautiful hanging petunia from Costco but realized that it’s going to be leggy in no time. Should I cut it back now? ( May 11th). I live in southern Ontario Great video!! Gotta love beautiful petunias!!
If the dirt dries out it will pull away from the pot. Then when you water the water runs off the top and down the sides without absorbing so the plant won't be getting water and it will die. You put a dish under a large pot and put water in the dish first. Then water the dirt from the top and the air will bubble out. A hanging basket gets lowered into a bucket of water and has a cup of water poured over it. It will bubble then sink. This is how you water plants that like water.
I love petunias but decided not to get anymore because I was tired of having to spray them for budworms. If they come out with ones that don't need spraying, I'll be happy to buy them again. I am in zone 9.

Oh my gosh, thank you for this video!!!! I have been getting so frustrated with my petunias. Now I know what I’m doing wrong/right
Absolutely love to grow petunias ❤thanks for sharing this 😊

I live in San Diego, California and I have planted petunias. I don’t know how many times and they have never looked good. They have never flowered. I’ve even bought the hanging baskets that looked good when you bought them, but then look like crap. Two weeks later. I planted some seeds couple weeks ago and nothing happening. So I’m going to go to a real nursery and try to find some of the ones that you talked about and take your advice and see what happens.
When you go to the nursery, ask about care, maybe there’s a bug issue that makes them more challenging in your area.
Wow! Such good information. I have to play again to take notes. Thank you for this wealth of knowledge especially on my favorite flower.
Happy to share… happy gardening.
Really good information! I’m gonna watch this one again in the spring 😊
I grew petunias years ago from seed. The varieties today are much hardier. The Waves are so full I’m wondering how big of a pot I will need.
I use Spray and Grow and have great success. My annuals will pop after a weekly feed.
I Would be interested in more. Very informative. Change the background to plants, seed trays lol You got this 😊
I never have good luck growing Petunias. I’m going to try your suggestion this yr. I’ll let you know what they look like. Thank you
Good luck!!! 👍
Very helpful and informative
I’m growing vista bubblegum and white this year
Those r the BEST!!
That was so interesting! Thank you for sharing all your tips, very helpful video.
Great video, thank you for the tips!!
Awesome video on petunias!!
Beautiful... beside petunia what other flowers will give this kind of results. ?
Petunias can give you the best bang for your buck. However, some types of verbena, impatiens, salvia, argyranthemum, and lobularia can get massive. Let the folks at your local garden center know that you want vigorous baskets and they can let you know what might work.
Thanks for all the great info.. I love that he talks w his hands 😂
You can definitely hear me better with the hands moving, right??? 🤣🤣🤣
Love the specific information.
Thanku so much, lots of info on these amazing, beautiful plants.
Over here in Perth Western Australia our weather goes from 41°Celsius in summer to 18° Celsius winter 🙄
I go from too wet to too dry, drives me nuts😊
Thanks again for a really informative tutorial ❤
Ps thanku for the info about it also being a seed propagation issue..
New varieties are the go by the sounds of it 😊
Those climate swings definitely make things more challenging!
Thank you so much for this video! I learned so much!
Could you name the variety of petunias again that don’t need to be deadheaded and don’t turn to slime if they get wet? Your video was awesome and really informative. Thank you.
There are several, but Supertunias, SuperCals, and Surfinias are all pretty good In the self-cleaning department.
All of them are from the company Proven Winners.
@@gratefulketo2211 Only the Supertunias are from Proven Winners, the others mentioned are also self-cleaning but they are not Supertunias from Proven Winners.
This was super helpful- thanks so much! I'm growing Petunia Trailing Surfinia Blue Vein this year. How many should you put in a 14" hanging basket?
I’d go with four of that variety (it’s got nice vigor), but I think most other people would recommend five to seven for a 14”. With more, they’ll get up to size faster. I’ve found planting fewer gets similar results… and requires a little less watering.
Our 14” baskets with Surfinias, Waves, and/or Supertunias are already over the edge of the pot (each with four plants), so they’ll likely be 3 feet wide by Mother’s Day.
If you’re not sure or you’re nervous they won’t fill in, plant five or six. You can always assess how they do, and reduce the number next year.
Well done!! Thanks for all the info. Nothing worse than buy annuals & not be happy with the blooms
So true!
I live in southern Ontario
Great video!! Gotta love beautiful petunias!!
Thank you so much for that reply!! I appreciated it so much!!
Great video, so much information. Would it be too much to put two supertunia vistas and a spike in a 14 inch hanging basket?
That should work out just fine.
I would love to see more of your videos about this
OMGoodness! Can you do this method with the new bioluminescent Firefly petunias? Im SO curious about those things! Thanks for sharing!
They should grow similarly, but haven’t had them to know for sure.
Great video! So informative. Thank you
Awesome video I really enjoyed it. I'll send you pics if I remember ❤
👍🏽 Awesome commentary‼️ Learned a lot.
very informative and helpful!!! Thank you!
Thanks for all the information this is so helpful .
Thanks this was helpful
Glad it helped
Thank you for the info my Petunias from seeds are growing so slow. Btw what fertilizer do you recommend for MUM I have some cuttings I propagated.
I haven’t propagated mums, so I’m not sure which fertilizer is best.
Thank you so much for all this information. I was about to give up on them
Good luck. I hope you have great success this time around.
Thank you thank you thank you for all your information
Great tips! Thank you!
Hello, thank you for making this video. I have looked online to try and find some Cupertino’s seeds . Where would you recommend I get them from? Thanks again for the video loved it.
Sorry, I’m not sure what Cupertino’s are.
@@UpNorthGardenMI hi sorry for the typo. Super Tunia vista seeds and some of the others where is a good place to buy them?
Really good info. Thanks.
Thanks again for sharing! 💯 ❤
Very informative. Thank you
THANKS FOR THIS INFORMATION
Earwigs have been eating up all my flowers and leaves 🙁 What are the names of petunia new variety that produce more flowers than seeds? My petunias don’t produce much flowers and yes after rain it looks wilted And washed out. New gardener seeking for help. Thank you for this helpful video.
Mukta
Get some Sluggo Plus or Captain Jack’s Bug and Slug. There’s a list of the plants I mention in the video description. Make sure your petunias are getting lots of sun and regular water-soluble fertilizer. Good luck!
Thank u so much for great information 😊
Supertunia vista is also supposed to work well in landscape plantings.
Thank you for this informative video I have been growing petunias for yrs they were one of my great grandmother's favorite and always remember hers.Im in Ca9a mine will come back for at least 3 yrs,i do them in containers i cut them back and they come back early spring.I got some wave this yr because the colors🤩😆 I didn't know about the seeds but I do believe I have more because the seeds have dropped.I started getting the wave last yr still give me two yrs And last yr I learned their heavy feeders and cutting them back a bit.
I’m a little jealous that they are mostly perennial in your area. Sounds like you’ve got a good system for growing them.
@@UpNorthGardenMI It's always about learning what works, yes I'm glad I get a perennial out of them.
Thanks for sharing
Thank you…this information was helpful
Vista Supertunia Bubblegum is the most vigorous Petunia that I have ever seen ! She is a beast
Definitely a beast 😊 - sunny of the Surfinias and Waves are quite vigorous as well.
Great information. I will definitely keep away from the seed links.
