    • @timb7775
      @timb7775 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I feel it depends on the type of petunia you're dealing with. I got some awesome Night Sky petunias from Bonnie and they took off after I planted them in a hanging basket, I put them in with some Supertunias and they are overgrowing those things. I wanted more and sure enough no more at the store so decided to take some cuttings. I just stick them in red solo cups with holes poked in the bottoms, keep them inside right in front of my sliding door for the back deck, water daily using a turkey baster, and after 7 days I could tell they rooted and were growing, 14 days later I transplanted in a big 18" urn and they took off from there. It's now July 7th so plenty of time for them to grow. I didn't use a rooting hormone but I do slice the bottom of the stems at an angle with a razor blade which I feel makes them root quicker. I also cut 2/3rds of each leaf away, I think it makes the stem force new leaves quicker instead of trying to keep the old leaves full. I could be wrong but l did this when growing Marijuana plants and it worked great so copied it with petunias.

      I got some Night Sky petunias from Bonnie plants this year and they are awesome. They are outgrowing Supertunias I planted them with. The colors are unreal, mostly purple with white spots but some look like stars. I went to buy more but sure enough they were sold out so I took some cuttings, 2 weeks later they were ready to transplant in there final containers. I will never buy regular petunias again, they look horrible after it rains.

    Hello there, your video is so helpful but I am not having any luck with propagating Petunias. I follow your video over and over but the cutting will shrivel up and fall over.
    I may not be scarring the stem enough, I just carefully pull the leaves trying to strip the stem while doing so. I have tried heat mats, grow light, both covering and not covering my tray.
    Please help !!!! I can really use some suggestions. I live in Los Angeles area with indoor temps averaging 75 degrees.

    • @ExpeditionHomestead

      How often are you watering?

    • @hectorcalderon1878
      @hectorcalderon1878 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks for taking time out of your day to reply. I am using a version of the grow tray like you use in this video. I fill the individual planter with potting soil, water enough where the soil is damp, create a hole, using hormone powder I install the stem cutting. I water every 2-3 days if the soil appears to be dry on top. My cuttings sometimes are maybe too
      thin and not as hefty as your video shows. I am not giving up though, I will keep on experimenting but I have to wait until mother plant grows out more.
      I think the next time I buy a nursery I will immediately cut stems and start propagating this way I have stronger stems to choose from.

    • @timb7775
      @timb7775 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll tell you what I do and never had a dead plant. I did this with Marijuana and now petunias. I use those red solo cups to plant the cuttings in, poke alot of holes in the bottom using a thumb tack, like 18 holes so it drains well. I use Miracle grow potting soil, put it in the cup so its light and fluffy, dont pack it down at all. Use a pen or magic marker to make a gole down in the soil for the cutting. I use a new razor blade to take cuttings cleaned with isopropyl alcohol. Take a cutting 4"-5" long, thicker the stem the better. Slice off all flowers and flower buds so it's just the stem and leaves. Slice off all the lower leaves 2" from the bottom. With the remaining leaves at the top take a razor and slice off 2/3rds of each leaf, this helps by forcing the plant to make new leaves instead of keeping the remaining leaves alive and full. Take the razor and slice the bottom of the stem lengthwise at an angle, basically so the bottom of the stem you stick in the soil is pointy. The new roots will grow quicker along this cut. I don't use a rooting hormone but you can if you want, i never used any and had no issues. Stick the stems in the soil about 2". So 2'-3" is left sticking up. I use a new turkey baster to water the cuttings, I just drip the water around the cutting, this way the soil doesn't get compacted if you water very lightly. Water slowly, until water is coming out the bottom drain holes. I place the cups in a cardboard box while they drain, so the cardboard soaks up all the excess water and the cups aren't sitting in a puddle. This way the soil is moist but not soaked. After an hour or so pick up the cups and feel how heavy they feel, then you can tell later on if they feel lighter and need to be watered. I don't use a dome, I just watch the plants and can tell when they need to be watered. The stems should stay up straight and not wilt.

  • @familhagaudir8561

    Over the years I tried cuttings with and without rooting hormones.
    It won't save cuttings kept in bad conditions ( too cold or too warm, like if they bake in the Sun with no ventilation holes, too wet, too dry, etc ).
    However, it will hasten rooting by a few days, and roots will be more vigorous, earning you a few more days towards a mature plant.
    So if that extra week is important to you, a tiny pot of rooting powder is about 6 dollars and lasts forever ( dip the bottom tip in it, enough will stick on the ''wounds'' of the cut and bottom leaf-pulling ).

    • @timb7775
      @timb7775 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try not to dip the stems in the container, should scoop a little out on a clean spoon then work off that, throw away any left over powder. Don't want to contaminate the container. I always clean my scissors and razors I use for cutting with isopropyl alcohol also.

    Thanks for the video. I know for a powder you're not supposed to insert the plant directly into the jar bc of fungus/bacteria/something is that the same with the liquid rooting gel? And second question with the powder again you're supposed to poke a hole and then push in the plant so that it doesn't pull off all of the rooting powder. Is that different with the gel?

    Is it necessary to cover the cuttings?

    • @timb7775
      @timb7775 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't. I grow mine in red solo cups, poke alot of holes in the bottom with a thumb tack. I use Miracle Grow potting soil, make sure it nice and loose and not packed down at all. I water them daily using a new turkey baster just for watering plants, just drip the water on so it doesn't compact the soil. I'll water then place the cups either outside on the deck in the shade to drain or if inside I put them inna cardboard box so the excess water gets sucked up and the cups aren't sitting in a puddle, this keeps the soil moist but not soaked. I water daily because it's like 70-80 degrees, if it were colder I probably would water maybe every other day. I think the domes are good if your not going to pay much attention to them, but me I'm always fiddling with my cuttings and plants so no dome needed.

    Good way to introduce pathogens to your rooting hormone. You should separate the amount of it that you will need and discard any remaining used solution this way you are not introducing disease to the next cuttings.
