  • Here are some more secrets and garden tips to rooting petunia cuttings. We're going to root these petunia cuttings in the hoop house with peat moss this time because I get a lot of people telling me they can't find fir bark. I'll show you exactly how moist to make your peat moss for best results, show you what propagation tray I'm using and where to get it, and give you more garden tips for propagating petunias and growing them successfully.

      Did you leave them outside or in the house? And if the house...did you use a grow light or T-8 light? I have both. Don’t know which to use indoors. I think T-8 since I don’t want to promote flowers 🤔🤔🤔

    Hi Mike, I’ve been propagating plants a couple of years now after watching your videos and loving it. But now I am totally baffled at what happened. I had 2 petunia “mother” plants , 1 pink and 1 lilac color. Propagated the same amount of each from cuttings and this spring planted them in ground and in containers. The buds were’t open yet but I had labeled everything so now as the buds are finally opening they are all blooming PINK! WTH? I thought they would be clones of the original plant. What would cause this color change? I thought maybe I mislabeled but I have yet to see any lilac blooms anywhere. I’m so confused and a bit disappointed. I was landscaping based on color but now it seems I will only have a pink pallet this year🤷‍♀️ I guess it could be worse. Ps. I added chicken manure when planting to most. Would that cause it?

    IF YOU ARE LAZY AND FOLLOW YOUR INSTINCT TRY THIS : I got a petunia few weeks ago. It had broken stems. I stick these stems into the ground and put some crashed peas and some ground coffee around (it works great at a compost). In no time they made flowers !!! Everytime I see a flower I cut it off. It made my little plants go stronger

    • @MikeKincaid79

      Depends on where you live and the types of cuttings you're taking. Cuttings of different plants can be taken all through the year. Softwood, semi-hardwood, and hardwood cuttings are all taken at different times. Also, sounds like you may be in the southern hemisphere and september is spring for you. Is that correct?

The result was a total loss!! Going to try again this year as I have a new batch of petunias. Grew these from seed that was given to me so no cost.!!. Hi mike , it’s September 22 and I’m in uk . We cannot get peat moss anymore , and our shop brought bags of compost have big lumps of n composted bark , wooden stems and lumps . Will that be any good to root cuttings in , the compost also is very hard to water . If you water a pot of compost , it runs down the inside of the pots and half inch under the top of the soil is bone dry , you literally have to put compost in a pot and mix the compost in water and stir it to mix thoroughly ,then drain before we can use it , our composts have been a nightmare . I’ve been gardening over 60 years and have never had such awful composts as we do now and it’s all to do with not having peat Cos of global warming , I also have a lot more failures now with my cuttings , hardly ever had failures with the peat moss . What can we do , please advise , Thankyou in advance.

      Sounds like a terrible material. I'd use sand before I worked with the stuff you described. Not sure what you'll do for potting soil but for propagation, sand is amazing, just heavy.

    I'd love to winter over some petunia's but live in Maine and our wintering over
    grow room stays between 50 and 60 degrees. Would/should we use a heat mat?
    It seems like with a routine of take cuttings, grow, trim back, grow and so on
    should work. We're talking indoor survival of 8ish months. With nursery plants
    we're talking $50 for 3 hanging pots. FREE unlimited plants your way. We've got
    pockets FULL of FREE. (being retired) TY Subscribed Great video

      Thanks for subscribing and I'm glad you enjoy the videos. 50 to 60 degrees is more than warm enough to overwinter petunias. I had a petunia hanging basket in my hoop house last winter and assumed it would die, but it sprang back from the dead last spring. It freezes hard as a rock in there. Petunias are fairly resilient. Good luck and have fun! You never know, you may be selling some of those $50 baskets one of these years.

    Well, "magic Mike", I took cuttings from my petunia today July 2, 2020. Put them in a seedling tray with the clear dome over it. It is in the plant room where the lights are on for at least 12 hours. Horizontal space is scarce so if i put a towel over the top of the dome to block out direct light, would that be ok? I wrote August 15 on the calendar to check up on these guys.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A towel sounds like it may work but don't cover too much light.

    I cut my petunia and stuck all the cuttings in Sphagnum moss outside in a pot. I put mint cutting in there too. The pot only was 1/3rd filled with the moss. Everything I put in there rooted and is gorgeous. The roots attached to the inside of the pot. I’m not even going to put them in dirt because they lived all summer like that and are doing so well.
