- Bassmaster Elite Angler Trey McKinney has been disqualified after Day Two on the Smith Lake bass fishing tournament. Trey has been subject to many penalties and judgement calls as a rookie on the Elite Series and this DQ puts his chances of Angler of the Year in jeopardy. Can he overcome these constant issues? Can he come back and win AOY? And ROY? Trey is one of the youth anglers that has been incredible on his first year as an Elite Series fisherman.

Trey only self reported the rule violation of running the no-wake zone because G told him he was going to.
It’s pretty hard for him to self report yourself if he didn’t know he did in the first place. He broke a rule and it’s his fault but, I still think the way G man handled the whole situation was pretty shitty imo. He is a young kid mistakes happen and people make wrong decisions. Gerald Swindle knows all about that and I’m sure most everyone saw the video of him flying those other fisherman that resulted in his catch for that day disqualified.
I don't think he knew that area was no wake. G was right, but how the whole thing went down was slightly off. That penalty hurt Trey, this last one hurt him more I think. Cheers and tight lines!!

When he weighed in, he didn’t say “my mom called me and I was like oh crap!”……. What he said on stage was “you know I was just fishing having a great time and then all of a sudden something just didn’t feel right”
Mom calling and a gut feeling of something doesn’t feel right aren’t the same thing. Seems like conscious guilt right there telling a half truth at best. Lied to everyone’s face at worst.

C'mon. Has momma been calling him his whole tournament career lol. I understand he's making 19 year old mistakes, we all did. But he's playing withe big boys now. On the biggest stage, where the whole world can see...as it happens. He's gonna be a hell of a fisherman, and can have a long career. But he's got to tighten up.

Trey was on camera when he was about to weight a fish wish his lure still in it’s mouth. The reaction he gave when the Marshall saved his ass made me question the dude since.

I have nothing against trey at all. But there should be some sort of major punishment if there's multiple rule violations in the same season. One violation once I a long while happens. But over and over and over again. Should make people think what's going on that isn't caught.
His penalties are adding up and have hurt him. The 90 minutes hurt his early morning spot, still did well. This one cost him MAJOR points for AOY. Cheers and tight lines!!

Two years ago he was a high school kid. Now he is one of the biggest up and coming professional bass fisherman in the world. Im sure his mind is running a million miles an hour with adrenaline, excitement etc etc..
I think Trey needs to give himself a break, take a deep breath... READ THE RULES, ALL OF THEM. Bring a copy of the rules with you, if you are not sure reference the rule book.
I really really don't think he is intentionally doing anything wrong. He is a child, that's not an excuse it's the truth. If he is going to compete at this level and dominate the field he has to be able to compete AT THIS LEVEL. The rules are 100% a requirement for every angler to understand if they're going to have continued success at this level. I think he is learning the same way a lot of us did at 18, 19, 20 years old... THE HARD WAY. So Trey if you read this... read the damn rules and continue to make history.😊

Wouldn’t it be a lot easier to pass a polygraph if you don’t read the rules? You can “honestly” say you’re not aware of any rule infractions because you have zero clue what the rules are.
If you want to be an elite angler, it starts with respecting the sport . Do it the right way.
This is a tough situation because he admits to breaking the rules, yet he continues to break them.

Your breakdowns are easy to watch and I don't find myself wanting leave mid video which is the case for 99% of other channels fishing and non fishing related! Ive fished with Trey since he was eleven...i can tell you rite now that he is a honest young man that is gona set the bassfishing world on fire...Trey gets so wrapped up in CATCHING fish that he forgets things associated with fishing...Ive seen him get in the zone of catching that he forgets the little things...He doesnt do this on purpose its how he goes about fishing...Please take it easy on the little feller as he is honest as the day is long....As far as his fishing, well he gets better every year....hmmmm stay tuned folks!!!!
I appreciate the feedback, and I have heard lots of positive things about Trey. He is young, but there are even more things that have been done that are negative. Supposed email went out recently that has even more issues, and you can't have this many problems this early in his career. He is learning the hard way. Cheers and tight lines!!

Great reports. He is learning ( the hard way ) what being a pro under a microscope is all about. Would imagine he will be around a long time and be able to laugh at these mistakes in the future. It has been an interesting year so far with all the drama and rules violations. Keep them reports coming in..

I have a feeling he accidentally let the cat out of the bag about the call bc when he weighed he said he forgot, was having fun (bizarre) and didn’t mention the call, I have a feeling he told someone and either didn’t mean to or purposely didn’t report it when weighing in. They told him to self report. It was reported as a 7 lb penalty originally and then later they took the bag away.
There are more rumors behind the scenes. I’m not sure why this keeps happening but it’s as if he never had any consequences growing up. He’ll have a shot at ROY, I think this really hurts him in AOY.
He placed a target on his back before the season started and it rubbed many people the wrong way (there were other questionable things that he did). I still like the kid but he needs to really think about all of this.

It's obvious you've never used one before. lol There's a lot of talent involved with making them bite, figuring out if you're actually looking at bass, vs. hybrids, stripers, crappie, etc. I have probably 20 followers to every bite. Every pro has one on their boat, yet most are clueless on how to capitalize on it, and would rather complain about how it's "ruining fishing."
I like Trey. As a parent of 2 grown children I believe he is very immature. His parents have likely sheltered him a great deal. At 19 I was working on ejection seats and launching F14’s off the flightdeck of nuclear aircraft carriers.. not making mistakes allowed me to live. He’s a good dude and a fantastic FFS fishermen. I hope he can overcome these things.

Trey is 100% savage. His angling skills are legit and he will be around for as long as he desires. The rule infractions are far from shady or cheating. He simply made some mistakes that he will learn from. His friend or partner having fished wheeler the week prior means absolutely nothing. There are several Alabama pros that could get info on wheeler that would be current and legit and the same can be said for every lake they visit as it pertains to the locals and who they know. They either have integrity and follow the "no info" rule or they don't. Regardless, anyone that tournament fishes much knows that chasing someone else's fish from days prior usually don't work out. Think about this; Trey didn't have a marshall in his boat at Smith Lake. If he would have had a marshal, I would bet that he would not have been late. Even if the marshals aren't allowed to share time with them there are ways of doing it without coming out and saying it. So, is it fair that some have marshals and others don't? Just another scenario to think about. I hope he comes back and wins AOY!
He can come back and win AOY. I think he looses focus, and he needs to do better. He is hurting himself with some of these little things and is helping stroke the fire for his haters. I don't know a lot about him, but people have said to me he is respectful. Cheers and tight lines!!
As an old fan who of the sport, I have seen several "overly aggressive" professional anglers enter the sport,who have habitually pushed the limits of existing rules to get an edge over their competitors; Roland Martin, Mike Iaconelli, Jacob Wheeler, and now Trey. There's no doubt all of these anglers were at the top of their game coming into the game. But of them caused several new rules (apiece) and amendments to existing rules by their motivations to get an edge over their competitors. In my mind, people focusing on technicalities over performances are people to be suspicious of....

He’s just a kid. If i were 19 fishing big dogs and id messing up the same stuff. When i got my 1st boat i fished a tourney on a lake for the 1st time with 45mph speed limit. Everyone thought i was a turd for apeeding but my mind was just trying to keep up with veterans

I want to believe these are just mistakes because he has a ton of natural talent along great scoping skills. But these mistakes are costing him a chance at AOY and there is no guarantee he will ever have this opportunity again. All this has me wondering and hopefully he shows it’s all just very young rookie mistakes.

My opinion, this dude has gotten away with alot in the lower levels, b.a.s.s doesn't have any odd ball rules, most clubs,, bfls etc all have the same common sense rules this kid either has no tpurney experience or has gotten away with alot of crap in the past because this crap is common sense stuff

This reminds me of calling my son to make sure he was up for his first day at university. We all do it! But, after that, he was on his own. He's an adult (my son), and he had to figure out if he wanted college bad enough to grow up and do grown-up things. Thankfully, he chose to be a grown-up.

Trey is a good kid and is learning the hard way. You can take FFS away from him and he will stay at the top. I have gotten to watch him first hand and he can flat out fish. He has made mistakes and taken the punishment. He keeps getting back at it. Live and learn

Each sngler has signed the rules, each angler is held to the highest level as after all they are pro. Pros set the bar for many young fisherman so pros need to act professional on and off the water. Violate rules suffer consequences.

He and his camp did this yesterday just to fall out of the AOY race as a rookie, so the Old Guard will stand down a little....if he wins it over the last two events, its on the old guard to not beat him. They know what they are doing.
AOY doesn't come around every year. He was in a spot to win it without much problems until this issue. I think most anglers felt like the upper swing was going to be tough for him, but he can catch em. Now he needs to push. Cheers and tight lines!!

I definitely think there is more to the story but it ain’t this, especially after catching the biggest bag off the day. The issue is mom and dad helped him through his entire life and never allowed him to fail, he didn’t know what a consequence is. He’s learning now though. I don’t want to speculate what was going on but it’s strange he was at the launch early bc he was late.

As fun anglers, ya don't leave fish to find fish. Here's story, my little boy was 6-8 months old and I took him fishing with me. DIdn't answer the phone when wife called, she called police and FWC to send someone to find me....TRUE!! Cheers and tight lines!!
I think the deal with Trey is he's likely ADD like myself.. Waching him fish he's all over the place, very impulsive, spontaneous and even clumsy at times. Forgetfulness falls right in line as well, being a trait of ADD/ADHD. This is likely the reason he loses track of time and forgets the rules etc. Sometimes though that impulsiveness is a GOOD thing in fishing, its just dealing with the rest of it that can be a real struggle.
Just so this doesn't get twisted... In no way is this a bash at Trey at all, its just easy for me to recognize those traits because I deal with that nightmare daily-

He is talented but young. He made it so quickly to the elites. In almost every pro sport the young rookies tend to have adjustment issues. Mentor program or spending more time reading the rule books or both? . My 5 adult kids I can’t see them at 19 doing what he does. Adulting is hard plus competing at a high level. I found him arrogant when I was near him fishing. I know other rookies have had violations as well.

Trey wasnt born 49. The kid is 19 years old. It shows. I was beyond dumb at that age. He is light years ahead of where i was at that age. He will learn from all of this and be the foremost expert before too long. The kid is the future. P.S. ffs isnt going anywhere lol the technology industry literally funds the entire league. I think he is getting lots of heat for nothing. To start with ... the info he got was completely within the rules at the time. Running a no wake bridge when you are running 50 miles down a river is easy to overlook. .. the lock he fished he was told was ok before he fished it ... all a coincidence. The last was a killer to his standings. .. appears he forgot his check in time and the phone call was on whoever made it . To get where he was, he still had to find and catch the fish, which is hard to do, regardless of any pointers. . Not sticking up for him, but have fished many tournaments and easy to do...

He doesn't care about any or roy he's blowing up on social media and in a year from now he will be making more money than you ever could in tournament fishing and that's what's going to happen all the young guns are going to quit as soon as they build their social media and the sport of tournament fishing is going to slowly die off!

I would be willing to bet he would never have self reported this, if not for the Swindle incident. I’m not going as far to say that I “hate” Trey, but I cannot say he’s one of my favorites. His attitude towards Swindle at St John’s really came off cocky to me

He’s only had two rule violations. And one was super small. The second one on smith is bigger but he self reported it. This drama that everyone just eats up is ruining bass fishing. Things like this happen and the only reason it’s even a “big thing” is because it’s a rookie leading AOY. Please can we as a fishing community stop with all this drama and hate. It’s becoming intolerable

He is a rookie who definitely needs to sit down and review the rules. If he was trying to break the rules, he wouldn't self report. In the end, his self-inflicted errors may cost him big time. The devil is in the details, and he needs to pay attention to the details.

Don’t know the young man, but it sounds like he is learning life lessons. Now his mother needs to learn to cut the apron strings. Bass won’t do him or the organization any favors by not enforcing the rules.

My gut tells me, he's just a typical kid, full of pee & vinegar . . . no excuses for the 'stupid attacks' , I just don't see him being 'malicious' . . . wether or not I (or anyone else) likes the kid is irrelevant.
