After nearly a year of more and more M1 products, Apple pro users started to wonder when higher-end chips would become available. The answer is... today, with the M1 Pro and M1 Max. These chip revisions are the Jade-C Chop and Jade-C Die respectively rumored earlier this year. The new 14" MacBook Pro and 16" MacBook Pro are the first machines to support this new silicon and the new MacBook Pro has an entirely new mini-LED display, 120 Hz variable ProMotion, an improved camera, speaker system, microphone array, and more. The Touch Bar is dead (yay!), and a full-height function row has blessed us in its place. But there's a lot more to Apple's announcement you may have missed. Let's check it out.

I love that for years, uneducated people have looked at processors and said: "Well, why don't you just make it bigger?" And here comes Apple like, "fucking watch me do it."
Pc gamers have no concept of energy efficiency.
They are the biggest energy polluters in the consumer market. They will overclock the cpu to ridiculous lengths to get extra 5% increase in performance with their water cooling and jet engine fans.
They will never appreciate the engineering and craftsmenship of apple silicon.

@@RunForPeace-hk1cu I'm not going to pretend like I'm defendable. I run 3080 + 5800X for my PC but I don't overclock. Never really thought about the energy use ramifications, but just that it lessens the life of your parts for such little gains.
But also, does it really hold a candle to someone who, say, races cars or rides 4-wheelers or snow mobiles or has a mildly fast boat? They're definitely not "the biggest energy polluters in the consumer market."
I think the Mac vs PC thing is just over at this point. I play games on a PC and I work on a Mac. They just have different purposes at this point 🤷♂️
Tbh imo this IS their best line up of MacBooks yet besides the early 2010’s one. They got so much right adding those ports back.

I was thinking of getting one of these machines. They've brought back Magsafe, they got rid of the awful touch bar. They've made a steroid based processor. The SD Card slot is back! It has an HDMI out. The headphone slot now supports higher impedance headphones. This is one of the greatest machines out there. But it has a small notch at the top, and that is unacceptable. So I won't bother buying one.

You forgot to mention the ridiculously good 120hz hdr display on top of all that! I would take that with a notch over a normal square lcd any day.

I can't believe people actually care about a half inch notch. I remember the days when you had hang an external webcam onto the screen or sticky tape it on the top. Here we are in the 21st century and people are losing their shit over a tiny notch.

There’s plenty of people who don’t like the notch. Just look at any online Apple forum. Personally, I hide the menu bar and don’t like the idea of a black square at the top of the screen. It’s just plain ugly. But I’m sure Apple will sell plenty so they’re not too concerned.
yeah exactly notch is fine …. just make the menu bar black and it will be nearly invisible.
Also According to the new documentation, the fullscreen mode in macOS Monterey automatically accounts for the camera housing by placing a black bar across the top of the screen to hide the notch and prevent app content from being placed there.
Just place Wifi icons and stuff in the top black bar and the rest for the app and it is ok.
Will be less of an issue than the ipad mini screen ;)

I'd like to challenge that assertion about pro cameras moving away from SD. I think there's still a ton of pro level cameras using the standard and I am thrilled that SD is back! Love the video though Quinn!

That’s a good point about screen scaling, hadn’t considered how that might work with the notch. I think ultimately, I’m ok with it so long as it doesn’t overlap any programs even by a tiny bit. If it does, Apple really messed up - but I’d say it will probably be fine cos it would such an obvious situation they must have considered

They’ve increased screen real-estate by the height of the notch / menu bar. So full screen apps still have the same notch-less resolution they would have had on existing MBPs. The menu bar and notch is “extra”.

@@AMGF815 Ok. Please take a look at the solution from other manufacturers. With all of the solutions the webcam quality is either really poor, or the solution is not great (looking at you Huawei, LG and Dell). Does the notch look good? No. Would I also want a better solution? Yes. But if you consider that you can more or less hide the notch with dark elements + maybe Apps in Fullscreen don’t go around the notch, you really won’t notice it that much. I don’t like that people call these MacBooks „not good“ because of that thing because everything else is miles ahead of Windows and Linux Laptops

The best thing about this thing IMO:
- Headphone amp
- Aesthetics
- Battery life
- Screen size
A MacBook Air still does almost everything this does though
Regarding the notch, from that one screenshot of Resolve, if the menu bar has too many options to be placed on the left side of the notch, the remaining options will just be placed on the right side of the notch. So it essentially splits the bar into 2 sections.
People were asking if it blocks any content. From what I've seen so far, it doesn't. Apart from the aforementioned menu bar, fullscreen mode just blacks out the area around the notch, turning it into bezel.
Kinda wished they could sneak a fully blacked out menu bar up there in fullscreen mode, but eh. Actually quite impressed with the MacBooks this time around, and it's the first time in a while that I can say that.
I wish they would have went with an even sized bezel around the whole display

On macOS Monterey you can set the menu bar to always show while in full screen so I think you'll be able to have a blacked out menu bar on top
I dont get what the hate for the notch is, it doesnt cut off any content and basically gives you so much more space now that taskbar is up there, it doesnt hide anything, there is nothing that far on the taskbar, and the apps are below it, what is the problem
I think the menu bar will look a lot better in dark mode.
The 100 on the vertical axis of the charts is the performance relative to the M1. So 150 performance units is 150% the speed of M1. Just wish they said the application used to measure that

While these new MacBooks look impressive (I'd especially like the new display for video work), I won't be able to upgrade in the foreseeable future. My work includes development software that won't work on ARM.
Best coverage from what I’ve seen so far is probably Max Tech. He ordered nearly if not all configs.

I miss the Touch Bar. It was great for skipping ads on websites ad block didn’t work on. Websites were never coded with it in mind so you could just scrub to the end of the ad

I'm happy to see the back of the useless, inadvertent piece of over-complicated garbage! I'm a dev. Devs need real function keys to do our jobs. Adding the touch bar increased the price of the 2016 MacBooks, and that price bump hasn't been removed with the removal of the touch bar, however.

Apple can you please for the love of all things RENAME THE 13” PRO TO THE 13” MACBOOK. It would make the lineup make somewhat more sense.
The only 13" MacBook now is the MacBook Air.
The 13" Pro will get discontinued soon although I'm not sure considering they sold the 2012 MacBook Pro till 2016.

Based on the "relative performance" compared to the outgoing 5600M, some of the 32-core graphics benchmarks are in 3090 territory. In a 60-watt power envelope. I'll give them this; Apple is likely in possession of all of the capacity of the most advanced process fab for their SoCs, which counts for a lot, but they still had to be designed, and the custom silicon team over there isn't being paid enough for this level of work.
Btw, we have a TFlops data for the GPUs and this makes it clear that the M1Max's GPU is on the level of PS5/XSX, in TeraFlops. Incredible.

I don't get the stupid remarks about the notch XD You have your Taskbar up there anyway. Either they had to have a bigger bezel or just leave it completely.
Personally id rather have more space up there for the taskbar and have a notch, than have the taskbar be part of the full screen. I also rarely use "fullscreen" on programs which hide the taskbar.

I like pretty much everything about these new machines (at least on paper).
Will miss the Touch Bar personally, but the tradeoff is well worth it. I would have LOVED to see Face ID on that thing. That would have made a big improvement in usability.
The notch is pretty ugly, but I prefer it over that screen real estate not being utilised.
I ordered the 14”. It has everything I wanted to get me over to M1. Also between my 13 mini and the new design, it’s a dope 2011 retro vibe over here.

@@damienlobb85 I’ll admit I never said dongles were good but I did convince myself “oh NBD.” However I have enjoyed using them with the USB-C iPad Air. I’ve actually switched the majority of my photo editing to the iPad thanks to that.

The notch on a laptop really makes me think Apple has some powerful being locked in a basement that grants them success as long as they are not universally beloved.
That’s a fun guess, I personally think it’s that they want to pave the way for putting Face ID in that notch by getting consumers and devs used to not having that little rectangle. It would have been better if they did add it now but they might come back in a year or 2 and start adding Face ID to the computers now that that part of the screen is going to be off limits
Out of curiosity, Why don’t you like the inverted T arrow keys? People complained last time that the keys were hard to find tactically because of their old shape.

Great video, although you are way off the mark about SD cards being a thing of the past. They are very much still the standard for pros.
there are a ton of sony pro cameras that still use SD. most *canon* cameras have moved on.

I haven't upgraded since 2011, mostly because I wanted a bigger screen and the 17in was a powerhouse for me for ages. It's finally beyond use at this point for me and I've been suffering with michaelsoft binbows for the last 3 years. I've been waiting... and saving. Finally this one was like okay. I think it's time. It took a huge hit on my wallet but I feel like this will be a decent successor to my old workhorse from 2011. I hope it's worth it or I'll return it after testing and wait longer.

Hey! Great initial coverage! I was wondering… with these new actual “Pro” machines, do you think IT/Cyber Security specialists will be able to do their job (remotely connect to servers, use VMWare Fusion, and so on) with these new machines or do they need the x86 architecture?
Do you think the ARM processors will eventually be able to emulate x86, via VMWare Fusion? Bc right now IT pros do use MacBook on Intel… but I don’t know if they always did back in the PowerPC days.

The HDMI not being 2.1 is a true kick in the balls..
HDMI 2.1 requires 48 Gbit bandwidth. You cannot have 3 Thunderbolt ports + HDMI 2.1 + SD-card reader on 4 PCI-E lanes.
Its gonna be „the next big thing“ next year 😂
There simply isn’t enough bandwidth to go around for all of the ports.

What I would really like to see is the M1 Pro and Max in a Mac Mini.
I think this is the first time I've looked at a MacBook Pro and thought "I don't deserve this!" I can't dream up a scenario where I need this much power and I certainly can't justify spending the money!
I have to face that fact that a M1 MacBook Air would be enough of a laptop for me. Actually; to be honest, my 2015 MacBook Air is still good enough for me.

So happy to see the touch bar gone. I'm glad I held out and never bought a touch bar equipped laptop, but having to use one for work was awful.

2C-Die and 4C-die sound conspicuously to me like those are going to split into chiplets. M1 Max is already pushing to be as large as the biggest consumer GPUs. 4x that is probably past some interposer size limit.
I’m sorta jazzed on MagSafe, except, the old barrel side-winder style was the only one you could reasonably use on a non-flat surface, the flat ones just lever out. Alllllllso, as an M1 owner.....who gives a sh**. I can charge for like 45 mins and use my laptop for days afterwards. Albeit not super heavy loads. I just rarely charge, and the MagSafe is just not that big a deal anymore.
If I could pick between the current MBP line up, I would stick with the 13" M1.
These changes are not for everyone. I mean the specs are crazy, but the rest of the changes are a downgrade for me.
-A giant notch without faceId
-A bunch of ports I'll never use
-Removed touchbar
-Ugly black background keyboard
-Case design that looks like it was made i 2012
2016-2021 and they've fixed all of the flaws they introduced...

@@xudumusics8148 That's the price of tech nowadays. Unless you're hitting the $2000 mark you're not getting laptops this capable, windows or mac. You can go buy a $400 plastic laptop but it's doomed to fail, build quality will suck and the specs will barely run 3 tabs in chrome. The XPS and razer laptops are the only real mac contenders in terms of not being goofy gamer looking and having the specs to match and they're similarly priced. Shit, but it is what it is i guess.

actually the price has gone down. you can get the 16" MBP M1 max with 64 ram under $4000. In the past to get their higher end speed laptop was about 5k.
I’ve heard that the standard 67W charger won’t support fast charging, so check compatibility before ordering yours. Also, and I might be the only one, but the rounded bottom cover is ugly as hell to me. I call it the “bathtub design”, and I won’t stop calling it that until the next redesign, which will probably be sometime around 2030. Other than those two things, I think Apple gave us 99% of what we were asking for in their “Pro” laptops. With the exception of Face ID (and Center Stage which I didn’t think about until you said something), I’m fairly certain this will hold us over for at least a few years ✌️😁

It's also perfectly possible that they just create 100000000000 of the same chips and for the cheaper 14" macbooks they disable some GPU/CPU cores in firmware. You can have just one production line and save a ton of costs in overhead.

Not all M1 macs have an M1 Max, not all M1 Macbook Pros have M1 Pro

I'm not surprised on the Touch Bar, When the first M1 laptops came out, despite always usually preferring the "Pro" model just because, I ended up doing the more intelligent thing and getting the Air just because I didn't want the Touch Bar! Considering all I use this thing for, most people just use their phone, it's still slightly more computer than needed, but very much impressive. Impressive enough that it really set high expectations for the inevitable more powerful SOCs that they announced, and the laptops. I'm shocked but happy about some of the changes, like actually bringing ports back, which isn't normally in their reputation. They look excellent too, so I can't wait to see how they do when people start getting their hands on them.
the nerve apple has to bring back hdmi without it being 2.1 and simultaneously acting like its a feature infuriates me.
