I've had my M1 Pro for about 8 months now and yes these new ones are tempting of course, but my current machine is plenty powerful, so I'm gonna stick with it for hopefully many years. Bought it for music production and it's excellent, I really can't complain
My thought is that the 13" M1 Pro was a placeholder and going forward it is going to be M in the MacBook Air and the M Pro/Max will be the Pro models. The question then will be between the upgraded MbA at $1450 vs base model MbP Pro at $2000. Is the larger screen, 6 GPU cores and media decoders worth $550?
Doing so much more teleconferencing, and spending so much more time looking at a display than 2 years ago, the 14” MBP is worth it for me based on the screen, webcam, microphone, and speaker upgrades. And the ports make it easier to hook up to my desk setup.
2020 M1 Macbook Pro Space Grey person here - Couldn't be happier with it in the most basic variant. It has everything I could ever need, I can't remember giving it enough load to spin those fans audibly so far with design work and there is a high chance I will never do. @@trapjimmy3346 Still fantastic. The screen blew me away and the speakers are top shelf. Only problem is for some reason sometimes the audio keeps popping but that’s not a speaker problem but a software problem and I reported that to Apple
Been using a 2015 i7 MacBook Pro, and upgraded to the M1 Max. The difference is astonishing, and probably would have been so even if I had upgraded to the just the M1 Pro. Really excited the Apple is also now a partner with the Blender Foundation - looking forward to see where that goes!
Apple is a partner with the blender foundation now? No wonder you can only use p3 color mode on an apple device, they software locked it so that you can't use it properly on any other platform.
I must say: after watching tens of TH-cam reviews on this product, your video is by far the best of the lot. Precise, concise, and effective. I just subscribed to your channel
Start at base model, go up one storage upgrade from 512GB to 1TB. This one upgrade includes the extra 2 CPU core upgrade and it's really the perfect middle ground to help future proof this laptop in my opinion.
An idea for this channel: can we please have comparisons on everyday tasks too? Multi tasking with a teams meeting, while editing a power point for example. Having multiple apps running in the background, and general connectivity.... the content creator perspective is great, but limited for most people.
I got the 14" 10-16-16-Core M1 Pro with 512 GB. I saved on storage because a 2 TB NVME SSD and USB C enclosure is only ~200-300$ (whereas Apple charges 600$). I have noticed though that the external SSD is about 20% slower on the MacBook Pro 14" (700 MB/s) than on my 2017 iMac 27" (900 MB/s). I have tried all sorts of combinations of ports (internal and on my CalDigit Dock). I even went to an Apple Store and ran benchmarks on all Apple Silicon and a few Intel Macs they had and found that the external SSD speeds on Apple Silicon consistently were 20% slower than on Intel. Weirdly the only combination that worked with full speed on Apple Silicon was using the second Thunderbolt port on the dock. Hopefully this can be fixed in Firmware
I have the base model 14” as I’m just a beginner in 3D Modelling. Also wanted to move away from my gaming PC to something nice and quiet. In Blender you can certainly notice the performance. I’m just blown away by how these Apple silicon based Macs turn up and completely destroy the competition. These products are worth every penny and will just get better as more companies transition to Apple silicon. Great video btw :)
I just came from m1 MacBook Air since it couldn’t utilize multiple monitors 😭. The base configuration of m1 pro is so convenient for me in my budget and use case (light gaming w/emulation, seamless workflow with VM and business apps , portability). The boosted performance is just a cherry on top for my personal use.
Happy on my M1 Air right now, will get the Mac mini pro as soon as it is available, but no rush, I'm fine. On a side note, I'm impressed how well my Air handles battery management, as I'm almost always plugged in. I didn't trust the AI first, but it fits, after a few month of training and nearly a year of use, it's spot on and 99% health. Stays at 80% charge most of the time, but knows when it gets busy. Magic.
M1 Pro is simply overkill for a majority of people. I have the M1 Air and it has plenty of power for what 99% of people will need it for, even for photo/video editing. The only downside I can see is not getting to experience the XDR display, but the M1 Air display is plenty sharp and smooth while saving you $1000, hopefully they do offer a 120hz option for the Air in the future.
funny because I just bought the m1 macbook air lol. I know we're getting soonish to a refresh but I can't take the wait anymore, so at worst I'll just sell it at a small loss once the new one comes out
I went Space Grey for my 16" MBP. Coming form a 2013 15", I've had enough of Silver. Apple needs to bring out standalone space grey accessories again, but with USB-C...
As impressive as the m1 is, the apple specific software optimization is even more impressive. I'd love to see a video on how it extends beyond the apple stratosphere.
As a developer I'd go with M1 Pro 14" 10 core (+$200 more). I don't need these extra GPU cores and 16GB is enough for programming. And in terms of size 14" is much more portable and comfortable for me in rare times I carry it around. But most of the time it's simply plugged into external monitor.
As a developer who kept running out of memory all the time up until last January when they got a bump from the 16 to 64, I can confidently say that 16GB is good enough for basic webdev.
@@david-polak interesting, what is your default work setup? For me it’s couple of Intellij windows open where there can be java or go running, i.e. couple of backend microservices (depending on project) and react or angular dev server running for fronted and couple of docker containers here and there in the background. Also of course other things like MSTeams, outlook and couple of more apps, etc. and like 20+ tabs in browser
@@killerlion6 the setup where I was running into most issues has 16 docker containers running which provide stubs, plus the main service container. Then a heavy database container (not a modern db at all), on top of that the front end and middle layer parts are either running in dockers themselves or when necessary being deployed to a local KinD cluster (which I never turn off because I am lazy). Couple of pycharm projects opened at the same time usually to cross reference, one of them is running in a venv so that’s low impact but the other one has to start up its own container with packages. And then chrome, not many tabs usually. Can I fit into 16GB? Yes, but it is a hassle to constantly micro manage ram consumption… I remember having to turn of some of the containers before I joined a meeting because otherwise the webcam would be choppy on the other end and my computer would chug pretty hard… I am much happier now ;)
I use python for data analysis and got the base model 14” inch two weeks ago. By running a few codes, I used over 10 gb ram and experienced memory swap a few times. For coding and program development, you need the extra ram go 32 at least if you can. The base isn’t that bad but I don’t think it’ll hold up well down the road.
I got a base model upgraded to 16 GB of RAM (I feel like at this point 16 should be the minimum on laptops) and so far it’s been phenomenal for my casual video editing. I haven’t been pushing it too hard, but cutting a gameplay video with a handful of edits and lite effects in DaVinci barely eats at the battery, only got the machine to a slightly warm (but still comfortable) temperature, and was very smooth the whole way through. Some things got it to snag a bit, but compared to an intel MacBook it’s a dream.
I’ve heard good things about the ssd speed and Mac OS being able to utilize it for swap space for the unified memory. I’d probably opt for the larger ssd rather than a ram upgrade for that reason, at least to 1tb which doesn’t seem too much of an added cost considering the base price of the machine.
For $2k i feel it should at least come with 1TB of storage. Though I have to admit, this is the first MacBook that intrigues me enough that I would consider it an option if I went shopping for a new laptop.
I’ve been thinking and dreaming of buying a MacBook Pro since 2008. Back then, I didn’t even know what I was going to do with it, just wanted it, as Jonathan said, for the “clout”. Thanks for this video, MA. Helped clear a few things up for me. 😁
I went with the base model 2021 M1 Pro Pro (wow, what a mouthful). I did make one upgrade to the base model, and that was to go from 512GB to 1TB. Additionally, I paid the extra $20 for the 96w charger.

One thing I'm really intersted to know about it how well these new Macs do with running Blender. This is my main focus and I'm aware that a powerful GPU or very powerful CPU is necessary to ensure that the vieport it updating quickly and renders don't take ages. I'd love to see this tested in Blender or similar programs such as Unreal or Maya - specifically with how the viewport functions with large scenes, rendering large images or animations and physics simulations. Traditionally Macs haven't been great at this stuff but it would be great if this was a portable blender machine. I'm so over having a windows desktop beast.

It's as if they would have thought about the name before releasing it ;)
M1 Air rocks. Great battery life too
i disagree.
No mini LED, HDR, 120hz, ports, MagSafe, thin bezels, etc.
Even if that stuff isn’t worth the extra money, it’s still a good idea to wait for the next MBA
@@OneDerscoreOneder He wasn't talking about the M1 Pro MacBook Pro which starts from $2000. He was comparing the Air to the $1300 13 inch M1 MacBook Pro.
@@loki.8435 still even if he was comparing to the $2000 his opinion is valid as the MacBook Air is half the price of the new mbp.
I just love the MAC address style of video, with the editing and quality of the videos, they're some of my favourite on the platform. Please don't let this channel die!
Literally the question I'm asking myself right now
Doing so much more teleconferencing, and spending so much more time looking at a display than 2 years ago, the 14” MBP is worth it for me based on the screen, webcam, microphone, and speaker upgrades. And the ports make it easier to hook up to my desk setup.
God this guy is such a good camera personality, he makes MA
2020 M1 Macbook Pro Space Grey person here - Couldn't be happier with it in the most basic variant. It has everything I could ever need, I can't remember giving it enough load to spin those fans audibly so far with design work and there is a high chance I will never do. There is certainly no need for me to get an even stronger machine since this one is already strong and super reliable :)
I Am not an Apple user, but i love to watch this channel! Its kind of relaxing and has the best Apple products reviews that i've seen recently.
I bought the base M1 MacBook Pro and I make radio and TV commercials. It works great!
I just ordered a base model with 1TB storage. Thanks Jonathan for making my purchasing decision easy. I was uneasy about getting base spec but after seeing the comparisons from the upgraded M1 Pro, since I'm not a creative professional it made it a no brainer. I'm gonna have fun with this thing.
Edit: So it finally arrived…and my god base spec is overpowered. Final Cut is Lightning fast and buttery smooth. Yes buy the cheapest one this thing is a monster
how is it working for you now?
@@trapjimmy3346 Still fantastic. The screen blew me away and the speakers are top shelf. Only problem is for some reason sometimes the audio keeps popping but that’s not a speaker problem but a software problem and I reported that to Apple
it seems decent for someone who doesn’t need all the extra horsepower it doesn’t make that many compromises
Anyone who upgrades to a six year newer computer is going to notice the difference.
@@robertp457 *cries in dual core MacBook air 2015*
No.
Magic.
Thanks for actually showing the use of HDMI in video instead of just talking about it like the dozens of other videos I've watched on the new MBPs.
Jonathan, you're my favorite Mac intrusion
That notch with a webcam cut-out added to the outro got me chuckling. Appreciate the dig.
Silver never stopped being the right color
Until space grey entered the ring
I love my 2013 macbook pro. I see absolutely no reason to upgrade whatsoever. I've had mine since 2013 and it's still going strong.
It would be fair to mention Apple’s cooling solution pre-M1 wasn’t enough and that caused the heat issues you mentioned and not necessarily Intel.
Jonathan is great. I love the way he adds commas into his sentences like a boss. He’s right up there with Christopher Walken.
M1 Pro is simply overkill for a majority of people. I have the M1 Air and it has plenty of power for what 99% of people will need it for, even for photo/video editing. The only downside I can see is not getting to experience the XDR display, but the M1 Air display is plenty sharp and smooth while saving you $1000, hopefully they do offer a 120hz option for the Air in the future.
nah, they won’t actually, the air has different auditory
funny because I just bought the m1 macbook air lol. I know we're getting soonish to a refresh but I can't take the wait anymore, so at worst I'll just sell it at a small loss once the new one comes out
its still the killer device imo, plenty power, plenty thin and lightweight, plenty battery life, and DEAD SILENT ! :)
I upgraded from the M1 MacBook Air to the base model MacBook Pro M1 Pro. The new Pro is the best Mac I have ever owned. No regrets.
Just curious, what do you use your MacBook Pro for? I was thinking about upgrading my M1 MacBook Air to the new 14 too!
My favorite Apple-centric place to watch videos about everything Apple. Never miss a new video.
I went Space Grey for my 16" MBP. Coming form a 2013 15", I've had enough of Silver.
Apple needs to bring out standalone space grey accessories again, but with USB-C...
You guys got every version of the new MacBook Pro so I sure hope we get to see a comparison of all configurations
As impressive as the m1 is, the apple specific software optimization is even more impressive. I'd love to see a video on how it extends beyond the apple stratosphere.
8 pixels!? That's Outrageous!
finally someone discusses the difference between the base charger vs the 96W charger. Thank you!
14 base model owner here and i really dont need that much power but it's great to have it. For me it was the display and the speaker. Best Cop ever
I am 1 year late, but just bought the M1 pro. I don't do anything heavy but wanted the Pro so I can be cooler than others.
I'm literally waiting for mine to get delivered by UPS today. Already feel like I'll be a convert from windows.
I clicked just because how great the thumbnail was
I’ve heard good things about the ssd speed and Mac OS being able to utilize it for swap space for the unified memory.
You can always pay way more for a Dell XPS 15 that isn't nearly as good.
I think the storage is fine for what you are getting
I would agree, on the other hand Microsoft is still, shipping its $1100 surface pro with a 128gb ssd
@@SchwertKruemel yeah that is unacceptable as well
@@SchwertKruemel plus the storage is faster than what you’d get on most laptop ssds
I’ve been thinking and dreaming of buying a MacBook Pro since 2008. Back then, I didn’t even know what I was going to do with it, just wanted it, as Jonathan said, for the “clout”.
Now, some 14 years later, I’m a backend and hobbyist mobile developer and about to get this base model MacBook Pro. It’s more than enough and the specs should last me a good 3-5 years if not more. Thanks for this video, MA. Helped clear a few things up for me. 😁
Great video as always. Production value and script is top “notch”!
Thank you, I’ll be here all night!
Those Ram and ssd upgrade prices are outrageous, I'm used to twice the price of individual components but 3/4x that? sheesh...
...or if you only want to look cool just get the base model.... ,direct to the point, I like that . Instant subscribe.
I went with the base model 2021 M1 Pro Pro (wow, what a mouthful). I did make one upgrade to the base model, and that was to go from 512GB to 1TB. Additionally, I paid the extra $20 for the 96w charger.
I’m one of the 3 people who really loved the touch bar and it’s why even if I had the money, I still wouldn’t be sure if I wanted to upgrade
Definitely my favorite LTT channel. Camera work is top-notch. Now we need a crossover episode with Anthony about Linux distros for M1. That man needs his own show too.
I went with a maxed out 16" M1 Max with 2TB. Its my present to myself for not upgrading since 2014
the notch in the credits was the best touch of the video :D
I bought this instead of the new air because it was 100€ cheaper than the air at the time.
9:15 is that from an unreleased upcoming test or is that from last year's M1 tests?
Unreleased. You can see the difference in thickness of the laptop's base.
exactly what i was thinking bro
@@thelegend-e7919 good spot! I was too busy trying to see if the keyboard well was all black that I didn't even look at the overall case shape haha
Yeah this is new tests, on the far left you also have the new surface studio laptop and what looks to be a zephyrus g14(?), then the old m1 macbook and the two new ones.
All I need is an M1 MacBook Air, just wish I didn't have to step up to a £1900 MacBook Pro to be able to output to dual 4k displays 😭 I don't need 120hz, the power, RAM etc. Fingers crossed for M2 dual display support
I have a 12 something iPad that I use for drawing purchased by financing through best buy over a year. I buy a whatever phone about every 3 years, used, to save money. I don't have a laptop anymore. Do I say probably too much? Probably.
I've just ordered the base model 16", I've never spent this much money before on a laptop, I'm hoping it'll be worth the wait
How has it been?
@@Mandem909 The most impressive thing is the new screen, it’s much better than the older Pro’s. I only use it for web browsing, TH-cam and Netflix so I don’t push the machine to its max capability, unlike how video editors do. It’s worth it for the screen alone, speakers are better too
@@msagoo29 that's great to hear! I've been trying to choose between the 14 and 16 inch. How do find the portability of it? I've seen a few people complain it's too heavy/unpractical and go for the 14 inch.
@@Mandem909 My laptop is mainly at home so portability isn't important to me, but compared to my previous 2019 13" Pro, it is much bigger and heavier, I tried the 14", but I preferred the bigger screen for movies, the 14" is still a heavy chunky machine. FINALY SOMEONE SEES THE SIMILARITIES! (between the PowerBook G4 and this)
I'm leaning towards at least getting 32G of ram and 1TB ssd. I upgraded my current macbook pro(15" 2011) to 1TB SSD and 16GB of ram, and I don't know if I can survive with less storage with editing video. I am however definitely glad I held out for the larger macbook pro.
I'd go 2TB and stay at 16GB (assuming you can't do both within budget)
The new SSDs are so fast, it can fallback to swap easily anyway if you run out. The 2TB SSD would be way more important long-term imo
I love it for dev work.
Stays cool through stuff my old Intel i7 MacBook would be burning up doing.
Great! What configuration did you get?
You guys do realize it’s almost impossible to find a review for mac books that are NOT done by/for video editors :) It sounds like these laptops are only an option to buy for video/image professionals and the rest of the IT industry guys should go to other products. I am really curious to view an overall product review covering more usage scenarios, it would be a breath of fresh air. Maybe you can surprise us with something like this .
Apple bros are the same as Tesla bros. They can not get away from each other. They are hardcore and some belittle non-Apple users. Isn't the tech industry an open market?
Anyway, this channel says Mac Address so it will only be for Mac people.
After being forced to use an old MacBook Air at work I feel like I can honestly say that I will never in my life buy a MacBook.
However, I still do like my iPhone and the innovations Apple bring to the table.
Also, Jonathan’s videos are amazing for sure!
Why ?
Just bought the base 14” and I love it. Runs cool and quiet, power brick is smaller, and its more powerful than my 2014 15” MBP. Handbrake x265 rencoding take half the time and i can actually use Video Enhance AI now. It was unusable on my old MBP.
Laughed out loud when you connected HDMI and go from excited to dark pits of sadness. "What am i doing with my life?"
Loved the review.
So glad they added more ports, I was sick and tired of dealing with my Anker management
I specd a 14" with the 10 core M1 pro, 1TB SSD, 32gb memory. Hope I made the right choice
The only Apple product I've ever owned was a 1st gen ipod shuffle. I just like hearing Jonathan explain things.
Rant On:
Creativity is not the exclusive domain of graphic artists. Gandhi was a creative politician. Einstein was a creative scientist. The person who came up with French Onion Soup was a creative chef. The guy who invented the flush toilet was a creative engineer and probably saved more lives through improved sanitation than anyone in history.
Creativity is in every aspect of human endeavor. Not just the graphic arts.
Rant Off:
Love your take on Macs.
I'm a software engineer and I have 140GB used on my current Mac so 512 feels like a lot for me. I wonder what you are guys doing on your computer that you need more storage. I get video editing, sure but people that are not doing that fill it with what? Pictures?
I sold my MacBook Air M1, and got this base model MacBook M1 Pro 14 inch, mainly for the display and sound. I don’t do anything special with it. But I am very happy with it
using a 14inch right now it's definitely more than capable of everything that needs to be done
I'm a product owner at a software company. I think the base model will be a big upgrade from my 2020 i5 16 GB MacBook Pro. I'm going to wait a few months to gather up the cash for it, but ultimately I will do it. This was a great video, I'm really enjoying Mac Address.
Also, the notch on the outro comments was a nice touch.
I have an M1 Air, and to be quite frank, the *only* thing I need more of is RAM. Lots of ram. But jumping from an Air to a Max 64gb?
I think I'll wait for the next gen and see how things progress
I ended up getting the base 14 inch macbook pro. The main reason was that with the black friday deals going on here, the gap between this and the 1TB model was a bit much. I always prefer having more storage and ram, but for my day to day usage it's clear that the base 14inch is more than enough performance for me. We'll see how that ages over the next 4-5 years
I am glad there is a nice big difference between the Air and Pro models now. The previous generation just didn't make sense
I'm quite happy with the Base M1 Air. .. After years of el cheapo Win laptops, I finally have a laptop screen that doesn't switch from super bright to invisibly dark by tilting the thing 2 degrees..
Not sure why you're comparing a cheap windows laptop with a $1000 macbook air. There are plenty of $1000 windows laptops that have amazing display, performance and build quality. But I do agree my M1 Air is amazing and I don't plan on switching back anytime soon.
That titanium g4 was the first I bought … that transition to bsd was what sold me on MacOS

Me, getting my space grey MacBook tomorrow: 🥲🥲
I actually never liked the silver on the Touch Bar version, but somehow it attracts me this time.
Buy whatever color you want, not what color other people say you should want.
It'S the exact opposite effect for me lol, I'm a Silver guy but this time around the Space Gray looks great
I don't know what he's talking about silver has been done to death by every manufacturer, space grey is much nicer.
My main laptop has been a MacBook air from 2013 in silver for 7 years and getting the M1 in space gray is sublime, I specially like the color because my iPhone was also silver XD.
i also getting space grey , i hope i'll like it because every review says silver is way to go. no way for me to return this and get a silver one because it will take 2-3 month to return this and purchase new one from Turkey :)
