  • Here is a simple testing procedure for many models of vehicles with a MAF sensor. Quick and dirty.
Although it doesn’t work for all vehicles, it is a quick way to direct your diagnostic path.

Hi MM. You checked and discounted quite a few things, making for positive diag. Then showed us just the relevant part. Nice video.

Thanks Nigel, I felt it was a good one to share as it really showed how simple the testing procedure is to find the faulty MAF in this case. :)

Max you just saves us $600 plus on your video on Toyoata Echo hesitation on accelaration. After replacing the fuel filter, same problem occurred, cleaned the MAF sensor and Bingo, runs like new. Thanks very much

      You are welcome Paul!
Faults can be a bit tricky to find sometimes.

Good job, Mark! Your customer needs to start bringing his vehicles to you rather than that other place! Yep, the MAF sensor would be my first check, and then the TPS. And also clean the crud out of the plenum.
Back in the day we could just tap on the top of the MAF sensor to see if it would act up.

Hey Robert, there are quite a few varieties of MAF sensors that require different testing methods and of course it depends on how the ECU is calculating data and their default settings, but in this case, it was a simple unplug that sent me down the correct diagnostic path.

Yeah, I am sure there are many different types now from when I worked on them back in the day.

      Hey koolkiwikat
      ,
You are welcome! In some cases, it is best in the long run to replace the MAF rather than attempting to clean it.
      Thanks for your comments

    Hello Max
You've just save my ECHO I was experiencing the same problem so I called the mechanics they've changed plugs, pump and even dismantled fuel tank still not fixed so they advised me to run the car after a while it till cut off, but I was not convinced after they lefted I checked TH-cam here comes the solution from MIRACLEMAX I did just that by changing the airflow sensor myself and it's worked just fine, after losing $200 to mechanics. Thanks so much may God richly bless you.

A guitar string or miniature flat tip screwdriver can help scrape the dust chunk off. I wouldn't jab at it. Just rub it around in there. I guess a stiff pipe cleaner and acetone might be effective. But getting down between the resistors is risky because one is lower than the other.

Yes Bob, it is possible to clean them, with a certain amount of success. I might try that on my own vehicle, but as a business & having to balance price with reliability, sometimes a new MAF is best.
      Thanks for your comment 😉

Another problem which will pop up with this car at this age/kms is the variable valve timing oil control solenoid will retard, affecting performance. It's a slightly pricey part but easy diy replacement.

      @MiracleMAX  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You are correct wendel6. It happens on most engines if the oil servicing has not been done one a regular basis or the incorrect oil is used.

Its the mass air flow sensor....
$15.00 part...all you need is a star screwdriver

      Hey brazildragoneagle,
A quality MAF sensor is a little dearer than $15, but you are right, it is a simple item to replace. Due to the position of the resistors, I found it easier to replace it rather than clean it.
