No Misfire COUNTERS? Nissan Misfire Under Load (Indy Day 4)

  • This hot rod 2002 Nissan Altima V6 5-speed has an annoying misfire only under HEAVY LOAD.
    Scan data unfortunately does not have MISFIRE COUNTERS available, so we have to think outside the box on how to pinpoint the offending cylinder.
    Turns out to be a really cool case study!
    Enjoy!
    Ivan

      Granted, I'm a cheap DIY'er, so this solution might not be for all.
      I would have bought a new coil, held it in reserve, and slathered that hole with silicone calk, encircling the area with a ring of heat shrink tubing once cured.
      Most likely, the no-parts-required repair would have lasted the remainder of the vehicle's life.

      @@GeneG-wk2mz I have a customer with a 1988 Pontiac 6000 2.8L with 457K miles. The valve covers and oil pan have never been removed. His wife picked it out new and he has changed the oil when it just starts to get a bit dark in color no matter the miles he says it's roughly between 1600-2400 miles.

    LOVE IT !!!! Customers can not get over the fact that I want them to drive on MY initial test drive. Get them to make it do IT and tell me when they feel IT {misfire or vibration} and/or when they hear IT {noise or clunk}. Once I know what their complaint really is, we swap places if I need to try some tricks to pinpoint the problem. Like left and right turns for bearing/CV noise or lug the engine in high gear on a grade for a miss. This keeps you from fixing something else you find that NEEDS fixing, but you don't fix the original customer complaint. I do tell the customer of any thing else I find needing repair after the original problem is solved.

    I was a teenager at dad's car lot/garage/junk yard back in early 70's. If we got a car traded in with over 100K miles we checked the transmission very closely and ran a compression test on engine. Very good chance one or the other was about used up. Now we have vehicles on the road less than 15 years old with 300K miles and it's not even a slight concern. Just amazing technology. Brand is fairly irrelevant as much as some would like it to be. Now I know the last 10 years with DOD engines have started to see a return to early engine issues. Finding any 2010 up, especially 4 cylinder vehicle, that doesn't have oil usage issues can be tough. The cylinder cancel technology (displacement on demand) isn't a good idea. It just creates too many issues. But the next 15 years WILL see a HUGE shift toward electric vehicles. Going to be another big shift in workers learning a new trade because a LOT of "technicians" aren't technicians, they are mechanics. Parts changers. PepBoys depends on them. Whole business model in based on selling parts/repairs. Not fixing cars. Selling parts/repairs. MORE! MORE! MORE! Ethics aren't particularly wanted. SELL THAT JOB! I mean the hiring process is all about ethics. But when on the job...not so much. BTDT. SELL! SELL! SELL! GET THAT MONEY! Reminds me of strip clubs.

      @@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Older OBD2s can be a chore to diagnose especially with limited data pids and slower ECM refresh rates and people often ignore mode 6 because it's not really user friendly. You have to know what you're looking at, and that takes time and digging. What does this goofy pid mean? It took me yrs of training to decipher what all those symbols mean, and how are they relevant. If you have a good case study in the future, you should do a vid using mode 6 as a diagnostic tool.

  • @williegillie5712
    @williegillie5712 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Ivan, nice job on that diagnosis. Isn’t it amazing what you can see in an ignition pattern on an oscilloscope? You can see the coil ramping up and then when the plug fires you can see how healthy the spark is looking at the the spark line. You can basically see how healthy the coils are and if the spark plugs are firing properly in the cylinders.. On older cars point systems you could tell how healthy the points, condensor, coil and spark plugs are. A very good way to check the health of the ignition system. Usually a bad spark plug wire will have a lot of resistance causing a high peak in the pattern before firing. Can confirm a bad wire by checking the resistance on an ohmmeter. Pretty cool stuff. The same goes with the injectors. A lot can be seen in a spark pattern. Pretty cool stuff.

    Misfire is under load because when under wide open throttle - more air is present in cylinder which means more compression in the cylinder. Second : when lugging, the low RPM adjust the spark timing closer to TDC, this means the spark must jump the gap, when the compression is maximum. And spark is difficult under compression. So it finds easier way through the hole in coil boot. If one just rise the RPM in idle the trick don't work because throttle is partially open(less air) and the high rpm means the spark is early(advanced spark timing) in compression stroke when there is not much compression.

  • @throttlebottle5906
    @throttlebottle5906 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I shortcut testing on those issues by using seat of the pants method. same way, lugging the engine in a high gear and full throttle, feel a miss? direct to visual inspection of coils, boots and plugs.
    although it's nice being able to see which cylinder and makes a better video testing. yes, you should still always check it out after repair, because all too often there's hidden gremlins and alligators waiting to bite. lol

    it always seems to be the front bank on all transverse engine vehicles, unless they've been severely overheated.
    I guess it's because of more heat soaking from the radiator, a/c and converter up there causing higher temperatures, or maybe the rear gets better airflow from turbulence.
    pretty much every v6 or v8 i've touched has cooked the front ignition parts way worse than the rear, except the ones which were overheated to death, turning the plug boots to chalky ash and more.
