I was driving my Echo a few weeks ago and it was totally fine. I revved it a few times and the light turned off. I started limping it home and the engine grenades :') You've been such an inspiration for me to keep going with that car that I'm going to rebuild it. I'm thinking about importing a 1NZ-FET from Japan to swap in. Or maybe, just MAYBE, a 2ZZ swap.
How did it grenade? they are pretty damn easy to fix and you can get another 1nzfe for cheap out of a wrecked car. They are in so many cars and honestly with the throttlebody swap and a few other upgrades they can be damn spicy.
When you said you were able to pass with race craft but that's not what you were there for, that hit hard. My first mixed group experience (some drivers requiring they point you by, and some not) was a challenge! It really sunk in that I'm comfortable with my line, and deviating from it here and there to find more time, but going totally off line to get a pass done before a corner by out braking someone or what not isn't where I'm at! It's always super inspiring to hear from you and your experiences, thank you for sharing! :)
Oil pump or possible sensor, oil pump sump to screen could come loose into pan! Do not panic or give up on Yaris possible easy fix! Great driving and please keep us informed of what you find out!
Love the car and the 1NZ is truly a tank. My dad’s Yaris has 480K from 2008 and only had regular maintenance done still doing 120 miles to his work and back every day since 2008. Shame the stock gauges aren’t more helpful and the water pump is badly positioned. Keep racing
Update the car is now at 536K miles. Oil burn is like top up every 1500 miles. Trying Valvoline restore and protect right now. First oil change with it at 528K and at 533K. So far the oil appeared like Diesel motor oil. Might just end up replacing the short block a rebuild. A 2ZR swap would be nice but not as reliable as the 1NZ FE.
Right as I was thinking “4 points” you brought up the belt situation. Got my racing license in an Echo and did track days in a Yaris I can definitely say this is such an overlooked advantage. Your body can just be limp and concentrate on precise inputs. The brakes on these things are impressive.
Should definitely get an oil pan with baffles in it for the future engine. If you are getting alot of grip you might have been getting oil starvation on some of those turns. Maybe that was enough to mess up the clearances on the crank bearings and all that.
Love your car dude! I had a 2007 Yaris with Cusco coilovers and 16x7" wheels, very sticky tires, manual transmission from factory, but stock engine and power delivery. The car was super fun but gutless. I was looking at trying to swap in a 1ZZFE from a GT Celica but didn't get that far. Your car is cool though man! Kudos!
Really a great video, and interesting to see a Yaris in this kind of environment. When I used to work at autonation there was this older lady who would pull up every other Tuesday for her oil topped off cause her Yaris was burning it up 😂
Love these videos man! Good to see someone else out there putting the ol ncp91 platform to good use! My 06 canadian yaris base currently has a little gt2048 turbo at 8psi but i am swapping in a 2zz for reliable all motor power. Hope to see you on track some day!
I'm actually on my way to sell one of the cars to pay for the 2ZR-FE swap in my 08 Yaris. Sucks your attempts of 2:10 were shot down by red flags and mechanical issues.
Well filmed and edited! You're a great storyteller. Hopefully the engine is ok and you can continue knocking time off. What's the local series for Toyotas that you've been competing in? I'm in LA and considering switching to a smaller N/A Toyota to race similar series.
i was in the gray 441 camaro and the red flags were absolutely awful that day. don't really know why they put me in the same group as a bunch of miatas when i run 1:58
Have you seen the kiwi one that had a yaris engine + big cams swapped in with ITB manifold? He was doing something like 12.5 quarter miles naturally aspirated
Soften the rear suspension or anti roll bar. It helps keeping the rear tires down when cornering. Short wheelbase cars tend to lift the inside wheel to make the rear rotate easier which is great and all, but not under braking. Some camber and toe adjustments would also help with reducing oversteer.
Im new to the channel. Definitely going to need to play catch up . Very curious about your tuning method. People dont race first gen yaris. Very interesting 😈
It sounds like your pad compound might be too aggressive. It should be easy to modulate the brakes at the threshold. It gets difficult when the pads have too much bite and don’t require much effort. You should be able to solve this with a different pad compound.
@@RassoolRacing definitely need to pair it with a mild aero package on the front. Not sure what's allowed in your racing series either. Good luck, you're doing great!
$10k in track mods is basically just a starter kit. If buying top quality thats like, wheels, tires, coilovers, brakes, and some cooling upgrades and thats it. Maybe like an exhaust.
Fair point, but when you're buying smaller cheaper parts because of the nature of the platform your money goes a lot further. Smaller brakes, 15in wheels and tires, cheaper suspension options, etc.
@@RassoolRacing Makes sense. I've always wanted a Fit track car. Btw, I realize my initial comment was kinda smartassy. No hate intended, this is a great video and a fun looking car!
Damn, sorry the red flags didn't help reach your PB goal at Buttonwillow and your loss of oil pressure. You think it might be worth it to crack the 1nz open and replace it (if it is the oil pump)? Fingers crossed it's an easy fix, and you're back to tearing things up on track 😊
essentially yes. usually, for a car off, they will just use a yellow flag which means, "slow down, be aware that something's up, but you can keep going". a red flag means "come to a complete stop". most track days never see a red flag and can solve all issues under yellow, so 4 in a day is nuts.
Do you think the engine is toast, or is it just a bad sensor?
it's the lack of interior in the earlier models
My 2002 yaris ran without oil for more than 210 kms when I was broke...and it never let me down...what was even running it...this car is magical😂
"Eh man... Are you havin' fun? ... That's what it's all about" ... FACTS.

What's a 2ZZ motor?
@@benkova6925 2zz I think is in the toyota matrix and has toyota oem supercharger. You should double check that since I'm not 100% sure.
2zz 230hp will be sweet
FYI the 2zz is not an easy swap. I am in process of 2zz swapping my Canadian 06 yaris base. It is much much easier to go 2zr

120 miles work commute? The car dependency is unreal
@lyssanch3096 the pay and job availability makes it worth it for him. Also update the car is now at 534K miles. It’s started burning oil past 500K

I’ve always thought it would be fun to see a Yaris series. Doing just what you’re doing.
I hope the 1NZ is alright, but if not sounds time for a 2ZR swap 😎. Maybe you could even add forced induction...
Just 2ZR swap it and you can even add a turbo on low boost. 250whp in that thing will be a rocket, you already have everything else ready.
Should definitely get an oil pan with baffles in it for the future engine. If you are getting alot of grip you might have been getting oil starvation on some of those turns. Maybe that was enough to mess up the clearances on the crank bearings and all that.

I got that same motor, 1NZ-FE. It's 19-years-old and bullet proof so far. Just a short ram and SS header

Some models came stock with 1zz
Ayyyy my car has one of those

youre the man joey
Awesome stuff, what engine mods do you have planned for it in the future?
You gotta look at roman3s he has an echo with a cammed prius engine swapped in, it lasted through a lot of track use as well
He scrapped the car about a year ago, but yeah that thing was fast
Heard the 2ar might b a decent swap
I use my Yaris for autocross and yes I lose the rear end when pushing too. Seems like there is almost no weight over the rear tires.

Might be a scavenging issue. If the oil pan doesn't have baffles those long corners tend to pool oil away from the pickup.

It's 100% lack of skill. Most b-spec cars are running a more aggressive version of this pad.
im saying its a sensor, is there 2 seperate sensors or 1?
2 sensors
