I think even after weeks of contemplation I still enjoyed this film more than Superman 2. Maybe it was because the copy of Superman 2 that I watched was a weird TV version but I found myself invested in this film completely. Yes, maybe there was more Richard Pryor and not enough Superman but I dunno, found it charming.
Thanks for watching! Have a great day! :)

I like 3 a lot! I'll take Annette O'Toole over Margot Kidder any day! I love Richard Pryor! I love that Richard Pryor did the movie because he loves Superman. In 1978 Richard was on Johnny Carson and all he did was talk about Superman The Movie. Superman fighting Superman better than anything from Superman 2.

Yes, please react to “Supergirl” from 1984 prior to “Superman 4” from 1987. Same production team (Salkinds) as the earlier Superman films - and it’s a campy cult classic w/ Faye Dunaway and Peter O’Toole!

Superman III was always a childhood favorite. Good silly fun. Now that I’m older, I can really appreciate the love story between Clark & Lana. And you don’t need to be any age to appreciate the junkyard fight! That scene will never get old.

I ADORE Superman I and II. Regarding Superman III, I'll say what I always say: If Superman I and II didn't exist, this would be considered a very good film.
I think we judge it based on the fact that it had a lot to live up to. It IS entertaining, there's no doubt about that.

If you’ve seen “Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip”, you’ll know why Pryor calmed down and did family-friendly roles in the 80’s after his rehab, but if you can check out his 70’s roles like “Silver Streak”, you’ll know why Pryor was too hip to play poor lovable Gus.

Great reaction! Richard Pryor is generally considered one of the greatest comedians of all time. He and Gene Wilder(Willy Wonka) were a duo in a few movies, but I've only seen one of them, which is 1989's See No Evil Hear No Evil. Pryor is a blind man, Wilder is a deaf man.
Annette O'Toole played Martha Kent (Clark's adoptive mother) on the TV series Smallville(2001-2011) Terence Stamp(General Zod) provided the voice of Jor-El in several episodes throughout the series. Christopher Reeve guest-Starred in two season 2 episodes.

I watched Superman 1-3 on vhs many times in the 80s. And I recently rewatched them all because i was looking forward to seeing your reviews after. I gotta say Superman 3 is easily the breeziest, most fun installment for me. Reeves is so comfortable in the role and the script wisely explores his Clark Kent persona from a more charming hometown angle. And of course Evil Superman lets Reeves stretch the character even further. There's also lots of Superman action of the appealingly cartoonish variety that one would find in the older comics. And the bumbling villians aren't as grating as they were in the 1st movie. And imho 3 has some of the best special fx overall.

The problem with Kryptonite, I think in Superman The Movie, he said he was from another galaxy. He traveled 3 years in the pod, although near the speed of light which was many thousands of his years. Which is odd, cause the nearest galaxy is around 200,000 light-years away. So, a piece of his planet would have to travel near the speed of light and actually hit Earth. In Smallville, pieces of his planet were orbiting his spaceship and struck his town. At least this was more convincing about a source of Kryptonite. In Batman vs Superman, Kryptonite was created by the world engine before it was destroyed. Which is also plausible. In 'Superman the Movie', Lex Luthor hit some meteorite with radiation and made it lethal. Not sure how he figured that out.

So the story goes that this movie was reworked a lot during production, hence some of the disjointed parts. Margot Kidder, the actress who played Lois, remembers being on set for the duration of filming, but simply wasn't given anything to film beyond her few small parts, and kept wondering why she was even there (bear in mind, she was still paid a ton for the film... she just didn't do anything for it).
To explain the villains: the script (according to legend) originally featured two classic comic villains in Brainiac (a living super-computer) and Bizarro (an evil clone of Superman), but due to rewrites and budget cuts, it was scaled back to being a genius computer-programmer and Superman turning evil.
On that note, Christopher Reeves didn't even want to be in this film after the difficult production of the previous one, but was swayed purely because he was fascinated by the idea of Superman turning evil as a plot-point, and loved the concept of it. I'm a big fan of Bizarro, and honestly, I'd kill to have seen Christopher Reeves playing both him AND Superman in one movie... but this is close enough I guess.
As I said on the last Superman video, I actually prefer this one over Superman 2. It's an unpopular opinion but one I'm firm with. This film is far from perfect, but hell, so's the second. Deal with it.
The comedy (except for Richard Pyror's scenes) is actually pretty funny, I like Lana as a love-interest (the scene of her and Clark in the gym after the dance is such a sweet moment), and I can watch the face-off between Clark and Evil-Superman again and again, it's just great.

The Clark kent / Lana Lang romance is one of those 'what-ifs' that abound in comics history. The recent Smallville and Superman's family series cover this from the side as it were, but she's the girl who Clark loved first.
There are comics from the 1960s especially that have Lana and Lois Lane as rivals, and Lucy Lane and Lena Thorul / Luthor make this even more complex if you include Supergirls' girl friends as well... complex. More complex if you include Superman's boy friends like Pete Ross and Jimmy Olsen as well. - and of course Supergirl's super-girlfriends in the Legion of Super-Heroes and Brainiac 5 was Supergirl's boyfriend for quite a while, before the Worf effect took that character over in the TV series.
Then there's also Lori Lemaris and Lyla Ler-Ol as well... - and of course Maxima, and...

Finally. This movie gets some love! I also enjoyed 3 more than 2. It's so frustrating that so many channels were told this movie stunk, so they skipped it. Thanks for giving it a shot and enjoying it. Also, if you were a Richard Pryor fan, which I was in the 80s, you'd have loved it even more. One more movie you need to give a chance is EXORCIST 2: THE HERETIC... it also got tons of hate. EXORCIST 2 and 3 I hope get a reaction here.

Sequels often get a bad rep based on expectations to live up to the originals. I'm 50, saw Superman 2 and 3 in theaters, and I also prefer 3 over 2. The 1st movie was a lot to live up to. The same thing happened to The Exorcist 2 The Heretic and Exorcist 3... If The Exorcist never existed, both 2 and 3 would be considered good or great. Psycho 2 and 3, same thing. Jaws 2 and 3, same thing. Same with Alien 3 and 4, and Terminator 3 & 4, and the X-men sequels and spin-offs. All the movies I mentioned here, I would rate 7 out of 10 or higher.

I remember going to see this movie with my dad in the theater. I didn't get to see the ending because I got really sick. i was just a kid. I remember they were barely getting on those balloon floating chairs and then they showed the supercomputer. but at that point I ended up outside in the theater lobby with a headache and feeling like barfing. My dad stayed watching the movie while my mom came and picked me up. also the reason my dad stayed was because it was a double feature. I can't remember what the other movie was but my dad stayed to see that too. It wasn't until it came out on home video that I finally watched it in it's entirety.
    some facts:
Christopher Reeve and Morgot Kidder almost didn't return to this movie. When Richard Donner was fired from Superman 2, both actors said they would not return to do a third movie out of respect for Donner. So the studio went searching for another actor to play Supes. Tony Danza agreed to play the role but the director was hesitant about it. So he begged Reeves to come back and he eventually gave in.
The little boy that Superman gives a picture from the photo booth is actually baby Clark Kent from the first Superman movie. this same child actor, Aaron Smolinski went on to appear in 'Man of Steel' where he is credited as "communications officer".
The original villain of the movie was going to be Mr. Mxyzptlk. a character that has appeared in a lot of the Superman comic books. but the idea fell through. so when they were trying to figure out what to do, they happened to catch and episode of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and saw Richard Pryor talk about how he would love to be in a Superman movie. So they reached out to him and hired him right away.
Lex Luthor was originally going to be in the movie but instead was replaced by Ross Webster. It's because of Webster that the modern day Lex Luthor is now a business tycoon. Up until the time the movie came out, 1983, Lex was portrayed as a mad scientist wearing a super suit. after the movie came out they revamped Lex Luthor to be more like Ross Webster.
The villian Brainiac was going to be featured in the movie as well. Brainiac is an evil cyborg able to control machines. Sounds a lot like the supercomputer at the end of the movie. but instead the character was saved for the comics and debuted the same month as the movie.
Another character that almost made it into the movie was Supergirl. the script had her fall in love with Kal-El. but later find out they are cousins. so that would have been a very weird awkward movie. Evil Superman would still be in the film but being controlled by Brainiac. luckily it didn't happen and instead Supergirl went on to get her own movie.
The video game sounds used during the missile chase scene are from the atari 2600 version of Pac Man.
Margot Kidder was written out of the movie as a punishment from the Salkinds because she criticized them after firing Richard Donner. Gene Hackman (Lex Luthor) also decided to not return because of Donner's firing.
Annette O'Toole (Lana Lang) went on to play the role of Clark Kent's Earth mom, Martha Kent, in the tv series Smallville. the tv show took a scene from the movie. Clark also took a lump of coal and crushed it into a diamond. he then gave it to Lana.
Christopeher Reeves had Alopecia. this is where his hair would completely fall out but would regrow. he would mostly lose clumps of hair. but by the time he got to Superman 4 he had to wear a wig because of his hair loss.

as fof the supercomputer, it was some wierd version of one of superman's enemies named Braniac

You should check out the WB Supergirl series! Season 1 was really good and aired on CBS, but like many other series on the WB it took a serious nose dive in the following seasons. The episodes still had their gems on occasion though. But if you like the Goofiness of Superman 3 you should def give it a try. They even pay homage to Superman 3 when Supergirl gets exposed to Red Kryptonite! What is Red Kryptonite you ask? It’s an idea from the Golden Age of comics that effects Kryptoinans however the writer wants it to affect them. It’s their anything goes Maguffin if you will.

I understand why you enjoy this movie. As a child, seeing it when it came out I thought it was great and both exciting and fun. Superman IV is not as good which killed off Superman movies. They had tried to explore something different in the mid-80s with Supergirl, so it's worth checking out that movie too, probably before you watch Superman Returns.

Nobody crucify me but if I had to take one Reeves Superman movie on a desert island it would be this one.
Now Superman 4 is the one you really need to prepare yourself for and be in a good mood before you watch it. It's objectively awful on all fronts. Still worth watching for Reeves alone though.

I think you underrate Webster a little. Even though the character had no sense of humour, Vaughn got some really humorous lines. Sadly, you talked over his best line (which might be the best line in the movie). By phone, Gus tells him Superman didn't die from the Kryptonite. Webster replies, "I asked you to kill Superman and you couldn't even do that one simple thing!" I think that line is brilliant...

If the framing aspect ratio your showing is accurate to what you watched then the film image was cropped for 16x9 tv's and monitors from its original 2:35 letterbox aspect ratio. Also check out Reeve in Somewhere in Time, Deathtrap, & the very little seen comedy Noises Off.

    • @shsrpr
      @shsrpr 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah, I was gonna say. At 13:33, Ollie mentions weird framing, I went and looked at my copy of the movie, and whoever is speaking is usually fully in frame, not half cut off like it shows here. So I think you're correct, the aspect ratio here is accurate to what he watched, and thus it is a cropped image.
