      In response to you asking if there was another example of the director being changed and most of a movie being reshot ending up with two different movies, Exorcist: The Beginning (2004) and Dominion (2005), both of which are prequels of The Exorcist (1973) starring Stellan Skarsgård as Father Merrin. This explanation is lifted from IMDB trivia: Paul Schrader was originally hired as director of Exorcist: The Beginning (2004), but Morgan Creek ultimately rejected his "psychological thriller" approach, saying it was "commercially unmarketable". The decision was made to extensively rewrite and re-shoot the script, re-cast several roles, add new characters and give the director's chair to Renny Harlin. Schrader's version was originally supposed to be released direct to video, as a bonus feature on the DVD release of Harlin's version. However, in the wake of Exorcist: The Beginning (2004)'s box office failure, Morgan Creek abandoned this idea, allowing Schrader to present his version at several film festivals, as well as giving it a small scale theatrical release in several countries under a new title (Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist). Schrader's version also received support from William Peter Blatty, who said to The Houston Chronicle that Schrader's version is "a handsome, classy, elegant piece of work."

      Larry Niven wrote a psuedo documentary called Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex. It spoke of why Superman could never have sex with a human female. He would gut her like a trout and when he ejaulated it would shoot through her body, killing her instantly. A pubescent Superman would put holes in the roof if he masturbated . . . . it's all just physics!

    For me, the best thing in the Donner Cut DVD was Richard Donner and Tom Mankiewicz's commentary where they trash talked the Salkinds (Alexander and Ilya) with both barrels blazing. Interestingly Richard Lester escaped any real blame as Donner admitted he was just doing his job. And he gives all the credit to the young film editor: Michael Thau for a masterful job, and convincing Donner that the fans were jonesing super hard for this cut. 👍 😎

    Christoper Reeve's casting has to be right up there as one of the finest, and most suitable, in cinema history. He was so great as both Clark and Kal El. He did so much to distinguish the two characters - posture, tone of the voice, awkward mannerisms, smiling on the other side of his face..... It wasn't simply a case of him "just wearing glasses" or having a different hair cut.
    He was also excellent as the "naughty" Superman in the third film, which alone justifies watching Superman 3 - they should have built the entire film around that idea.

    I've seen both versions, but if I'm being honest, I like the original cut more. I agree. I love the theatrical version of Superman II. The main problem with the Richard Donnor Cut for me is it (through no fault of its own) feels too much like a rough cut of the movie due to Richard Donnor not being able to complete it.

    • @johnnyskinwalker4095
      @johnnyskinwalker4095 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I like both really. Lois shooting Clark is a far greater scene than Clark putting his hand in the fire ON PAPER but since it was an audition scene, it's not polished, it's the wrong clothes and so forth. So the hand in the fire of course comes off better. Same as the fall into the water vs jumping out the window. I wished Donner had actually directed the gun firing scene in the movie.
      I also miss the big red S and all the other stuff that happened in the Fortress. Although my personal most powerful scene of either flicks was Jor-El touching Clark and somehow passing on his powers so to speak. Before this happened, I thought the DC was a little cold but with this scene my head exploded when that happened. I was like wow what a powerful scene. So I had the DC as the better version. But the ending time-travel was dumb so it made everything even. lol

    In the originals that green crystal is like some kind of key. It builds the fortress in the first movie. In the second movie he is showing it to Lois and she doesnt put it away and puts her purse over it. So that when the console in the fortress destroys itself it is not in there. When he comes back they show the crystal calling to him again like it did when he was young and found it in the barn. It is implying that by lois messing up and the crystal avoided its destruction because it was left out of place, he was able to call back his fortress and regain his powers.

    There are a few reasons that Superman giving his powers up makes sense, one of them being that when he got to a certain age he stopped aging at the same rate as humans, so Lois would die of old age while Superman would still be young.

  • @gmughadam76
    @gmughadam76 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    in case it hasn't been mentioned, In the theatrical cut it's more less explained that the green Crystal that Superman showed Lois that built the fortress of solitude was instrumental in him gain his power back ( Lois forgot to put the crystal back in the control panel). Either directly absorbing the energy within the Crystal or the Crystal repairing the damaged control panel. Superman goes back into the molecule chamber, molecular structure is reconstituted back into a Kryptonian or it draws out all the red solar energy that was embedded in his physiology...

    I like both the Lester Cut and the Donner Cut of Superman 2, but if I were to be totally honest, I grew up the Lester Cut, especially the TV version of the Lester Cut that had many Donner scenes in it and the Lester cut feels like a real movie. The 2006 Donner Cut feels like a special feature on a DVD/Blu-ray. Plus I prefer Lois finding out about Clark with him tripping over the pink rug and his hand in the fire, more accidentally, then the silly blank gun thing. The blank gun bit really feels dated, very Silver Age, very 70s/early 80s, whereas Clark accidently revealing himself feels like something we could still do today. And Lois jumping out of the Daily Planet building is cute, and the SFX are incredible for 1981, but the Lester version of Lois jumping into Niagra Falls actually feels more serious, less silly....this despite Lester being the more silly director compared to Donner.

    Everything about the Donner Cut is predicated on the fact that it was originally one long script split into two films. In the original film, the ending was changed so that the reversing time thing was used to save Lois, when the reversing time was the original ending for 2. In the original, Lois wasn’t supposed to die, and the reason for 2 missiles was one to get tossed into space and the other to hit California. I agree though, the diner follow up should have been cut in this version. The only way we would know how it was all supposed to go is to have the complete Mario Puzo script to see where the balance.
    The Brando footage was shot during the first film, and was not used in the second because Brando chose not to come back and finish it under Lester due to his loyalty to Donner.

    He goes to Zod as a human and tricks them into taking him to the Fortress of Solitude, and the opposite process that before took his powers away, the 2nd time around takes the powers of Zod and the other 2 away, gives Superman back his powers because the red light was outside and the green inside.

    @holdenhardman Still hoping for a SUPERMAN 3 reaction. It has some of the best moments in all the movies. Most of the hate, I believe, was simply because not every Superman fan was a Richard Pryor fan. So, when Pryor took half the movie, the Superman fans were appalled. It didn't help that Gene Hackman didn't return also. But overall, if the 1st movie is 10/10 and the 2nd is 9/10, the 3rd movie has so many great moments, it deserves no less than 8.5... but that rating is from a Pryor and Superman fan. The junkyard fight scene is the best. However, just to show I'm not deluded, SUPERMAN 4 is truly total garbage.

      I agree with the fourth one not being good. The best thing for me is actually the story about the new love interest and them trying to buy the Planet if I remember correctly, the entire storyline about the nuclear guy is just lame. Where you get her Fortress crying scene, then you have her crying at the DP. You even get the super-kiss. But before the movie ends, you see her maybe do some winking to the camera meaning she has not forgotten anything. Superman just gave her a super-kiss to cheer her up.

    This is a great recut version of Richard Donner's SUPERMAN 2. This is exactly what Richard Donner had in mind before he as tired from the project.
    The 4K version, I heard, coul have been better with the VFX, but the sound mix is epic, as Ken Thorne's musical score can be heard in it's pristine glory. I remember watching the 17 minutes behind the scenes involving the deleted scenes that were inserted into this version.

    The best version of this movie would be the theatrical version and the Donnor edited together to make one very good cohesive movie. Donnor’s opening with Lester’s ending are the main two edits. Keeping in how Clark gets his powers back. Keep all the Jor-El scenes. Cut the Lois shoots Clark scene, which is painfully obvious that it was test footage and keep the tripping into the fireplace scene. Those are just a few off the top of my head. I will cut this together one day.

    I commented before your ending commentary and I wanted to add something. In the original when he goes back to the Fortress of Solitude he tried to own up to his mistake and he gets no guidance from Gor El then he finds the green crystal. For me that was always enough. In the first movie he is Clark Kent until he finds that crystal that "called to him" and with it he goes north and it builds the fortress and then he becomes Superman. I was fine with the mystery of him getting his powers back after finding the green crystal again and if you remember, he showed it to Lois and she left it on the step away from the console that was destroyed when he chose to give up his powers. That said to me that crystal should have been destroyed also but wasn't and so that was how he regained his powers. I agree Holden, that both versions have pros and cons and I think they could make a really good extended cut using both versions but story wise I think the original/theatrical is better.

    The ending is really the only problem ive seen people have with it but there is a reason for it
    Superman The Movie and Superman 2 were shot simultaneously with the intention to release them around 6 months apart, just like the same producers did with Three Musketeers and Four Musketeers (directed by Richard Lester)
    Originally Superman The Movie was suppose to end when he throws the rocket into space and it hits the Phantom Zone, then the movie would end. There would be no reversing time. The producers liked the effect and asked Donner to use it in the first film. Donner planned to come up with a new ending for Superman 2 but was fired before he could do that.

    I mentioned this in the comments when you watched the first film, the Donner Cut is the original vision for the film. Him turning back time was originally supposed to be the ending for the sequel but the production issues forced them to use it for the first.
    Just my opinion, but I feel like you should have watched the theatrical version first so she could see the differences between the two films.
    The reason Clark's hair and glasses change in the scene when Lois "shoots" him was never properly filmed. When they restored the film, they combined two screen tests Reeve filmed with Margot Kidder and Holly Palance when they were auditioning actresses for Lois.
    I agree about the diner scene at the end. Makes no sense. I still don't understand why they included it.

ON PAPER it's better that the Phantom Zone guys get freed by the missile from the first Superman movie. But in execution the Paris stuff is better. The same thing as Lois shooting Clark while actually good, it was an audition scene so not very polished, hence the hand in the fire comes off better.
