    17:34...mate you're smart. A lot of reactors just think Blair's lost it. You're one of a tiny group who understand he's a hero and is willing to sacrifice himself (& the rest) for humanity's sake. This is why you two are amongst my favourite reactors. Love you both 🥰🥰🥰

    • @FilthTribeFTP
      @FilthTribeFTP 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah but, it's not actually the case. That's what you are led to believe, but Blair was already assimilated by then. He was doing it to isolate everyone so that they couldn't warn anyone. That way, he could escape in his craft and get to civilization. That's why he destroyed the chopper and other vehicles. That way no one would notice parts missing. Blair was most definitely the first to get got, it was just off screen, before silhouette guy got hit. There's no way he'd have enough time to do all he did of he got assimilated after he got locked up.

    • @leonidaslemonis127
      @leonidaslemonis127 3 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      @@FilthTribeFTP It seems you’re basing this gigantic assumption off of the idea that Blair couldn’t possibly have built that spaceship if he was assimilated after he got locked up; but we have no idea how fast the thing can work, how complex or difficult to make the craft is, or how close he even was to completing it. Hell, how much time even passes between the original assimilation (which is fair to assume was the silhouette), and Blair getting locked up? A day? Is the time difference really that great that Blair building the ship after getting locked up is completely implausible, but him building it after the silhouette scene makes perfect sense? Also, if the idea is that he got the parts from the vehicles after he destroyed them, then surely he couldn’t have started building the ship until after he got locked up anyway. Maybe he got them a little earlier without anyone noticing, but they took a ride on the helicopter at least once way after the silhouettes scene, which means he would have had to take the parts after that, which makes the time difference even more irrelevant. I just don’t buy it.
      Blair was the one to originally tell the crew what the creature was and how it’s biology functioned to begin with. If the reason why he didn’t want the crew to have the chopper was so that they couldn’t tell the world what it was or how to kill it, why did Blair bother explaining that to them in the first place? What’s the point of telling them how he works if that’s exactly what he doesn’t want them to know? I don’t know, man. The theory seems a bit flimsy, to me.

    • @thesilencer8074
      @thesilencer8074 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@FilthTribeFTP If Blair was already infected, he would not try to kill any potential vector of contamination like Childs or Windows (why else kill dogs if not?) . The thing still had a chance to go by helicopter at this point in the movie so why would it destroy something that would force it to remain frozen for maybe a thousand more years? He was still a hero who understood the situation long before anyone else. Stop believing that it is one thing from the start because it is your logic that makes some scenes useless in the film if you think about it well. You think you are being subtle by falling into traps as big as yourself. Sorry, but Blair's behavior is evident from start to finish as is his suspicion of Clarck. The shadow of the beginning is Vance Norris. There is no debate on it. It is recognizable among all the others but cannot be recognized by a person seeing the film for the first time.

    • @mrskinszszs
      @mrskinszszs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@thesilencer8074 actually the shadow was intentionally obscured by Carpenter by having a random on set stand in so nobody would be able to tell.

      @@mrskinszszs I dont think so. Look at the shadow, it's at 14:58 in the movie (sorry, i have a copy of this movie right now ^^, big fan). With this haircut, can you tell me who else could it be?
      Ok the shadow does not help but we can see its outline perfectly. No one else has this haircut unless you can tell me who.
      So as I said, at the first viewing, we don't know each protagonist and that's what Carpenter really counts on. But in the second, it is obvious.
      I'm not a Superman, but details like that I don't miss in the movies. And the detail for this particular scene is huge on screen and takes almost 8 seconds on screen.
      Maybe we can miss it on a cathode ray screen of the time but in the cinema, we had the same rendering as a digital version of our time. In cinema, films were and still are at a resolution equivalent to WQHD. It was the silver film that wanted that. FYI, I was a projectionist in cinema and even 4K in theaters is still today, a selling point for watching a film because not all of them are yet, far from it.

    IIRC Blair was in the shed or three days. After they put him in there, they mention a storm will be hitting them in 16 hours. Later Mac says into the tape recorder that the storm has been hammering them for 48 hours. So, three days. Still not a lot of time to build even a mini space ship, but it was The Thing so it could have manifested a dozen sets of eys, hands and brains to all work at once.

    • @RobertMorgan
      @RobertMorgan ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Also, from other sources, we know The Thing needs no rest, doesn't get fatigued or tired. 72 hours when they're all 72 productive work hours with no distractions of human nature, you can accomplish a lot...look at insects and you can see what extreme industriousness + discipline can accomplish in a short time. Bees are this way. It's not a hive of hundreds of thousands, it's one single super-organism with hundreds of thousands of independent parts.

      But when it transforms, it doesn't change back. Splitface couldn't turn back into a human, it could've just turned back to its human self and left outpost 31 in a chopper, Jed, Norris, palmer, Blair, once Gary was assimilated by face, that's it. They dont change back. It's a big misconception that the thing can do all these mad tentacle things whilst human and change back, we never have that explained. When once exposed, that's it. It hides. It doesn't transform until threatened and when it does, that's it. It slowly infects, we know it only attacks violently when exposed. Splitface acted aggressively because it was dying, that's all they had to go on, mac thinks it attacks you. It doesnt, only when exposed, it infects you, blair wrote his notes and Fuchs summed it up that quite possible small infection is enough. The dog didnt thing out on Norris and turn back into a dog, the thing cant do that, it simply infected him. Most likely covered him in drool, quietly. Hiding.

    Childs thought Mack was a Thing. Another thing is that this movie was made before the theory about jewelry began.

He was infect closely after the Dog autopsy, most likely used the snow cats/ machinery to get that hole done. Once he used the parts, nothing will work at the camp. In the game a special forces team is sent to investigate the outposts and they find Childs dead from hypothermia but not MacReady. Blair was turned the night that Fuchs killed himself. The transformation takes an hour or less at most.
    Also Blair could have worked on the ship for hours without sleep and he likely didn’t even know how it works because the thing imitates, it does not need to understand how complex equipment works. So the ship was an imitation of the old ship but likely he understood that he had no way to make it work, that humans were too primitive to have spaceship technology.

    They're both human at the end. Childs approaches McCready who's on the ground turned away from him. He has him dead to rights. If Child's is the Thing, he blows McCready to hell and wins. McCready can't be the Thing because of the events right after the explosion. The explosion happens and we see a man stumbling through the snow who's starting to succumb to the effects of extreme cold. We know that the Thing can survive in the extreme cold. It was buried in the ice for thousands of years and thawed out without any problems. If McCready was the Thing, that scene of a man stumbling through the snow would just have been a man casually walking.
    The brilliance of the movie is the mistrust that the discovery of the Thing causes. It's a perfect plot device right up to the end of the movie. They've achieved a great victory they cannot possibly celebrate.
    There was a long standing theory that suggested Childs was the Thing at the end. The evidence for this was the coat he's wearing at the end. There are slow moving camera shots in the movie of rooms and in one of these shots is a blue coat hanging on a hook. After the blood test scene, Childs is wearing this blue coat. The next time we see Childs he's wearing a grey/white coat. You have to remember, this was made in 1982, the setting/environment of the film is this dark encampment with very little light. Recently, the blu-ray version of this movie released and the video quality was remastered. In that version, you can clearly see the blue of the coat in parts where the snow/ice is not covering it. It's the same coat.

    The who's infected question is kind of a mess and ultimately a dead end. It's like the "who's shadow is that" question (they deliberately used none of the cast members so there couldn't be a RIGHT answer). When asked in a phone in Q&A if Childs is an alien in the final scene, John Carpenter said "I know Mac is an alien. I don't know about Childs," but when ground to a halt with callers just asking for details, he broke down and said "I was just kidding! I don't know who's an alien. NOBODY does. That's the point." He then messed that up by endorsing the PS2 "The Thing" sequel video game as canon which showed that Childs was human and dead from hypothermia and ends with Mac suddenly appearing at the end to save you from the Thing. And then there was the comic book sequel which showed yet another completely different fate for the characters, and the less said about that the better.

    Part of the reason this movie is a classic is the use of good practical effects. If they had used CGI I doubt it even be half as popular as it is.

    • @ephennell4ever
      @ephennell4ever 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To all intents and purposes, CGI (as we understand it today) didn't exist in 1982. "The Last Starfighter" had the best around when it came out, and you can tell the difference between the 'practical' and the 'digital' effects in it. Think about it ... *1982* means that this came out years before most of the YT reactors, who are doing movies, were even born!

    • @Corn_Pone_Flicks
      @Corn_Pone_Flicks 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ephennell4ever Yeah...if the 1982 film had used CG effects, it DEFINITELY wouldn't hold up today. 1982 did have two films to use CGI, which were Tron and Star Trek II, but in both cases it was depicting what were actually supposed to be computer graphics. Last Starfighter was the first time they used CG to represent what were meant to be real objects.

    Another thing about the visibility there: On sunny days, the light reflecting off the snow can damage your eyes, causing 'snow blindness.' It's important to wear sunglasses outside.
    Also, depending on their location, day or night can last for months, so it's hard to guess just how long they lived in this situation. It seemed like a few days, but it could indeed have been much longer.
    I think Blair got contaminated when he stuck the pencil he was using as an autopsy probe into his mouth thoughtfully...but it took a long time to consume him from within. He was aware or suspicious that he was being consumed, when he 'went nuts,' got locked away, and tried to kill himself (via noose) before it was complete...but the Thing took him over, and began its tunneling & building.

  • @Fettman89
    @Fettman89 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another theory I like is John Carpenter has said you can tell who a thing is because they don't have a light in their eyes, and Childs didn't have much light reflection in his eyes at the end, despite the raging fire, another theory is that when Macready handed the bottle to Childs it was actually Kerosene or fuel from the machines, and when Childs didn't flinch or say what the hell is that when he took a sip, because a thing wouldn't know what alcohol tastes like it shows he was a thing. Also after many times rewatching, I feel pretty confident that the silhouette was in fact Norris, the one who had the heart attack.

    This John Carpenter classic is a masterful exercise in paranoia and practical effects!
    I discovered "The Thing" during my junior high school
    years on VHS when going through a Carpenter phase.
    Originally a 1938 pulp novella written by John W. Campbell called "Who Goes There?", the story was first adapted to film as a 1951 Howard Hawks production called "The Thing From Another World". A '50's-era sci-fi classic in its own right, the original was taken to a whole new level by John Carpenter abetted by the incredible practical effects wizardry of Rob Bottin. A prequel was made in 2011 chronicling what happened at the Norwegian base but wasn't nearly as good.
    Led by a world-weary Kurt Russell, Carpenter assembled a cast of terrific veteran character actors including Keith David, Richard Dysart, Wilford Brimley, David Clennon, Charles Hallahan, Donald Moffat and Richard Masur who believably inhabit their roles and ratchet up the tension by degrees. Carpenter would direct Russell in five films including "Elvis", "The Thing", "Big Trouble in Little China", "Escape From New York" and "Escape From LA". He would direct Keith David again in "They Live!"
    John Carpenter is a one-man band who writes, directs, edits and scores all his films. In a rare exception, the score for "The Thing" was provided by composing great Ennio Morricone. Carpenter's body of work includes a number of pulpy classics and B-movie greats like "Assault on Precinct 13", "Halloween", "Someone's Watching Me!", "The Fog", "Escape From New York", "The Thing", "Christine", "Starman", "They Live!", "Memoirs of an Invisible Man", "Body Bags", "In the Mouth of Madness", "Vampires" and "The Ward". His first film, "Dark Star", was a sci-fi horror-comedy that partially inspired "Alien"! He also wrote the screenplay for "The Eyes of Laura Mars". His scores are instantly recognizable with their throbbing notes and he expertly uses silence and stillness to generate unbearable tension.
    Wilford Brimley's Blair sabotaged the vehicles after making the discovery that there was a high probability of someone being infected and seeing the grim projection that three years would be all it would take for the Thing to spread over the Earth! He was determined to trap them there which is the same realization Macready comes to at the end. He's taken to the shack a human but, the second time they check on him, he's probably a Thing because his demeanor is so calm. The funny noises he says he was hearing must've gotten to him before he could avail himself of the noose he fashioned as an escape from its clutches! As a Thing, he was building a craft under the shed to travel to the mainland.
    My favorite non-horror moment in "The Thing" is Donald Moffat's slow-burning explosive outburst while tied to the couch. "I know you gentlemen have been through a lot but, when you find the time, I'd rather not spend the rest of this winter TIED TO THIS F**KING COUCH!" It gets me every time.
    The ambiguous ending leaves you with four possible outcomes and they're all bleak. Lol.
    The best case scenario is that both Childs and Mac are human, the Thing was destroyed and the survivors die of hypothermia.
    The other three options are that one or the other or both survivors are Things who will copy the remaining human and the rescue party as well eventually dominating the Earth.
    There is a popular fan theory that Things lack eye gleam and Childs doesn't have it in that last scene. It could also be a trick of light.
    There is another popular fan theory that claims Mac tests Childs by giving him a flask of kerosene instead of liquor which Childs consumes! Mac chuckles with fatalistic resignation realizing he has failed and humanity is doomed. That is, unless, he has a spare stick of dynamite he can use to blow himself up along with a now very flammable Childs! Lol.
    The only sequels exist as a series of Dark Horse comics and a video game featuring John Carpenter himself as a Dr. Faraday!

    • @markfarris2630
      @markfarris2630 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the Thing drank kerosene it would react as a human would as its a near perfect copy. Another flaw of that is if Child's was he should have just toasted Mac just to make sure his frozen corpse is taken back in the spring.

    I like to watch Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Thing, back-to-back. The two films are so similar, thematically, that it's easy to imagine them as part of the same universe.
    The creature in the original version of The Thing, (played by James Arness) was a plant-like alien which had assumed humanoid form. The Body Snatchers copied humans inside plant-like pods.
    Maybe, one of the Body Snatchers made it aboard the alien spaceship and turned the pilot into The Thing? Probably not, but it's fun to think about.

    Great show! I'm a huge fan of The Thing and still remember when I went to the theater to see it opening night in August '82. I absolutely loved it and went back twice to see it again. Sadly, I brought my then girlfriend, to see it....big mistake. She hated it so much, that after 3 years of going together........she dumped me. If the movie caused it to happen, then I have to thank John Carpenter, he saved my life. Anyway, I find it amazing how this film never gets old. The practical effects are still amazing to this day. My nephew watched the 4K version of this film at my place a couple of years ago and he loved it. He found it hard to believe that the effects were not CGI (not at that time). I said, if you want, we can watch the prequel of The Thing and, you will see how both movies are different, one with practical effects and the other with CGI. Huge difference, man. After watching it, he was really disappointed in the prequel. In ending, let me point out, that I believe that McCready and Childs were both human at the end. Also, I know an alternate ending was written, where both characters are rescued at the end. Actually, I believe in the comic book versions of this movie, the story continues with that ending. Oh, more more thing, (get it?) I actually owned The Thing computer game on Windows 95, back in the 90's. Great game, except, there are several levels to reach, and I only could reach 2. Man, how I wish they would release a new version of that game. Sorry I went on and on, but, I really enjoy talking about The Thing. Love your movie site....take care.

You find Childs's body, having frozen to death, but MacReady is nowhere to be seen. This leads you to believe MacReady was the Thing, but at the end of the game, MacReady shows up and helps you kill the Thing, proving that he wasn't the Thing either.

    Third, I never caught that Childs still had his earring in at the end. Interesting. Did the Thing know he needed to have it to show others he was "human", or was he actually human?
    Most people zero in on the visible breath that McReady was exhaling and Childs' was non-existent or very little. But Childs said the temperature was up all over camp. So, would there be that amount of water vapor from McReady?
