Lightweight crank pulley - BRZ install

  • Reducing rotating mass for your engine is a simple way to increase throttle response. I am taking another stab at installing my Perrin lightweight crank pulley in my 2017 BRZ. This howto video will cover exactly what you need to know, in order to get the Perrin pulley installed on your BRZ, FRS, or Toyota 86! I've added a Grimmspeed alternative down below which will produce the same results. Note: Lightweight pulley's are not recommended with a high performance header like the ACE A-350 that I installed later.

    Can you tell a difference with the new pulley?

    • @TheBTRGarage

      It is not that noticeable. I always end up installing this after I have installed other mods, so it is harder to tell.

      On my 2013, I noticed immediate improvement in throttle response. Shifting was noticeably smoother for me. Conversely, when I returned my car to stock (for a lease return), the throttle response was noticeably more sluggish. If/when I end up with another BRZ, I would not hesitate to do this mod again. I did have the Kartboy, which is slightly lighter, but also makes a slight faux-supercharger whine up to about 3k rpm (different design, but not a real issue).

    I love you channel, wish you still had the toybaru. After running this pulley for some time, did you run into any issues with this part on? I have been reading on vibrations that our motors have or i should say all motors have. I looked at a harmonic damper pulley, but i have a perrin pulley at my disposal and wanted to see if it caused any issues before i buy the harmonic damper pulley. I rather ask someone who runs one and ses what they have to say, then a salesman.

      Thanks for watching! Wish I still had my BRZ as well ☹ I never had any problems with it on my FR-S or my BRZ, but that is just my experience. I did end up putting the stock pulley back on as that is what was recommended for my ACE header.

  • @chrismbroome
    @chrismbroome 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I know the stock pully helps with vibration in the engine, so putting an aftermarket one basically doesn't balance anymore. Will this be bad for the engine in the long run?

    I have some questions.
    There's less metal and probably cost around the same to manufacture this(In terms of overall car prices)
    If this is an ideal application, why aren't manufacturers using this in their production sport cars? or are there any specific reasons to why?
    Since cast iron rust and is heavier it should be a no brainer for them to use it right?
    And finally, if the throttle response is lighter, wouldn't the rpm drop faster as well?

    • @thetoadprince7867
      @thetoadprince7867 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes throttle response is better and drops in rpm as well. Who knows why car manufacturers prefer one design over an other. It could be due cost but overall performance is improved.

    I disassembled a factory pulley once, it’s a dual weight pulley with two concentric parts that are connected by a rubber seat. It helps dampening the vibration from the crankshaft. I don’t think it’s a good idea to replace this with a aftermarket part.

    • @drywater3559
      @drywater3559 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. Just buy a new OEM crank pulley when its around 80k miles and no need to worry about them failing.

      @TheBTRGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It makes the throttle a tiny bit more responsive. Since this video was done, I found data that some headers make more power with the stock pulley, so I really don't recommend this one much anymore.

  • @kouki.zc6
    @kouki.zc6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why are lightweight pulleys not recommended when used with a high performance header? Is it due to increased power? Under hood temps?

    • @TheBTRGarage
      @TheBTRGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The testing data shows the OEM pulley produces more power in that case, not exactly sure why.

    When you put the intake on (as I want the same one) had you done a OFT or EcuTek tune? Lots of other videos people say an OFT doesn't work well with an aftermarket intake, and I am just starting my build on my FR-S

    • @TheBTRGarage
      @TheBTRGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      An OFT or EcuTek both work fine with an intake. I have used both, with intakes, and there is no problem. You want to get it tuned for the upgrades you have ideally.

      lets just say that when u reduce the weight that means u to spend less energy to spin the pulley, just increase in throttle response and more whp, without actually increasing the horsepower. its the same reason why ppl do weight reduction.

  • @berengerchristy6256
    @berengerchristy6256 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    inb4 you'll break your engine because the crank pulley is a harmonic dampener (it isn't on a subaru boxer) and you will explode and die. Also press the button on your handbrake because you'll wear out the ratchet. Don't use socket wrenches ever the ratchet will just break. Don't ride a bicycle with a freehub because the ratchet will just break. Don't use your brakes you'll just wear your brake pads out
    In all seriousness it seems best to reduce rotational mass at the wheels, tires, (clutch?) and flywheel because they are the most massive but replacing the crank pulley is relatively easy
