K M First off this is old hat. Gvf, have come and gone. Robert Plant Called Out Greta Van Fleet for Not Admitting Zeppelin Influence. “I hate him," Plant joked to The Project Exclusive before adding regarding Kiszka's voice. "And he borrowed it from somebody I know very well. But what are you going to do? It's okay." That’s far from saying they are great 😂
Plant was then asked if he had ever met Greta Van Fleet or if Kiszka had tried to meet him.
"No, I mean, at least he's got a bit of star 'cause he says he based his whole style on Aerosmith," Plant said while scoffing and rolling his eyes. This is classic Plant cutting on them. He call them “Led Zeppelin 1” haha. He also said the little singer said he got everything from Aerosmith. Plant NEVER said , he’s great and well worth looking out for! 😂 Also he never said he thinks they’re the best and of the class of original great rock. You must be really stupid.
The most he ever said about the singer is that “pretty good” for a cover band. I’m glad they’re gone.

@@wandajames143 You are entitled to your opinion, however, Robert Plant should be grateful a generation gave the old sound a comeback. You know, because no one else would for the fear of not being a success. It's not fit for the times we're witnessing. At least they gave it a chance. And whether you, and the other close minded individuals like or not, it made a very notable comeback. That's all that should matter. The fact that a new generation brought back an old sound that it's generation, and others, are inspired by, speaks volumes for the world of rock & roll. It opens up a new chapter for the genre. That is my opinion on Greta Van Fleet.

I think that an awful lot of that comes from people not realizing the effort that others are making and so not appreciating it. We're generally not trained to notice such things.

I enjoyed this performance on Saturday Night Live. At the time I think what most impressed me was the total lack of inhibition on the singer's part. He was doing something that I'd never heard in a live performance, in front of an audience, broadcast to millions on TV, and understood to be recorded so that it could be watched over and over. Yet he was singing as though he were in the middle of the ocean, for his own pleasure. That's what made it great for me.

FF are very talented musicians--I have loads of respect for Dave Grohl--and have some good songs, but the sheer noise is exhausting after a while (TO ME, your opinion may differ) so I left before the end to avoid the rush. I don't think you necessarily need to play at a high level to have opinion if a band is off Vocally or musically one night. If something sounds too near the record it's probably not live. The great thing about live performances is the organic and fresh nature of it. Regarding Greta, I think they are an excellent band with a raw feel which I love. M. O.G. I think there’s a difference between promoting violence, and using violence as a storytelling device. It’s the reason why you can watch a movie like “Goodfellas” and understand that just because violence is present, it doesn’t mean it’s getting promoted. They tell you a story about where they came from. Just like the old bluesmen who discussed the garbage pits they came from. If you don’t wanna listen to their lives, then don’t listen. Now, I’m under no illusion that all gangsta rappers are non-criminals, but don’t slag a whole genre because it doesn’t conform to your tastes. And I’m not even big into rap.

@@bensagal-morris8072 Original gangsta rap was just supposed to be an honest representation of reality in the hood. It's a totally valid and important artform. (And I personally love it) The problem is that when gangsta rap first showed up, a record exec named Lyor Cohen had also just heavily invested in the first privatized/for profit prisons. He came up with the bright idea to make gangsta rap mainstream - which would promote violence and crime in the culture - which would help fill up those private prisons. Lyor Cohen stopped signing any rappers that weren't gangsta rappers and he got rich selling the records and cashed in on the resulting crime wave. Double profits. Truly sick. ..and Lyor was so sick that he even straight up told some of his bigger artists at the time that this was his plan. They were shocked and horrified.
Saying that gangsta rap "promotes violence" is kind of an old man thing to say. I get that. ...but it's technically true. From Lyor's point of view, promoting violence was literally the entire point. He's the one who should get all the hate though, not the actual artists. Most of them had absolutely no idea that they were being used like that.

3:55... To answer the bass question, I just watched a TH-cam interview -- _Rig Rundown Greta Van Fleet [2021]_ -- with first Jake and then Sam talking in detail about their equipment and performance choices etc. Toward the end of the video, Sam demonstrates how he plays the bass notes with his feet when he's at the organ. They actually really do a lot of work and tinkering with their equipment to get similar sounds live to their studio output. Pretty fascinating interview --: even for someone like me who can't follow all of it.

Something the rest of us could never reach not even with a pair of house bricks.
The entire band work so well together as unit.

I’ve ran live sound for 40 years and never had to mix in vocal tracks. However mixing in key tracks, sound bytes, and synth bass is common with small touring groups and it does add to the sound. With GVF I would prefer bass guitar with guest keyboards or even a key track. That’s my 2 cents. Much respect for these guys and look forward to more great music. Other groups that use auto tune sound like a horn honking the syllables.

Like people at the record label or in management told them to look good while going on national television. He said, “gotcha.” And then as a joke went out looking like a Hobbit to evoke more Led Zeppelin gossip. I think it’s so hot. Defiance is Rock and Roll. It doesn’t matter what he comes out wearing. He is so good looking and such a great vocalist, what he wears isn’t important. I’ve seen him come out with feathers around his neck and sparkle slippers. Still hot. I know that it can be irritating to other men that his lack of concern for appearance can actually make him more appealing to women. It is what it is.

Hi Fil . Really enjoyed this episode. My first concert was Jimi Hendrix in Berkeley when I was 15. (Very liberal parents). Being in the San Francisco Bay Area , we had quite a few venues to see live music. I saw the Faces (my favorite live band), Who, Zeppelin, Robin Trower, Slade, Black Sabbath, David Bowie,Jeff Beck, Wishbone Ash, Fleetwood Mac (pre Lindsey and Stevie Nicks) etc. Greta Van Fleet's music gives me the same feeling from back then. It's so cool to see a band having fun playing their music. So what if they miss a note or muff a chord. It's real. If you have a chance, look for the video of them playing "Highway Tune" at Cochella last year. They have a guitar malfunction, and as the guitar tech work on the problem, the bass player steps in and plays a ripping solo. THAT'S professional musicanship !

I agree with your thoughts. When I first saw them it was under the idea that they were a Led Zep wannabe band. I unfairly judged them because of that. Matter of fact that would be unfair all the way around to say that they stand up to Zep. We as consumers of music need to give every band there fair of growing up and becoming who they are. I am an older guy who grew up with Zeppelin. I appreciate every genre of music because I love music. If I can give these guys a chance I will think that everyone should do the same. These guys are the start of the new era of rock. Let them grow. Thanks, Fil another great video about why we need these groups.

I thought “that chick Greta cannot sing and what’s up with all her weird tics?” I googled “her” and read critics and fan reviews. It's also true that they sound noticeably different in other moments. So, someone familiar with Plant will recognize those similarities in the similar moments, while also noticing the differences in the other moments. Setting aside how much I love their sound, I can honestly appreciate their playing real instruments and playing them really well. As you made mention of so many critique bands like this without any having any real basis of said critique other than their "say so" Just like you mentioned, what experience do you have that can coincide with your critique? Have you been on this level of playing music? Do you truly know what it all entails to be on the road day after day, night after night on stage, performance after performance. Do you have any real understanding of what level you have to be on to be able to pull it off at the level that Greta Van Fleet, for example is doing? I just want to say I really appreciate your in depth analysis, it is really refreshing and as you mentioned it is so damn good to see real musicians playing real.music, live!!! Face it these young guys are very good musicians and they have climbed to the top very fast maybe too fast! I do believe as time goes by we are going to see so much growth in their sound! Most bands take many years to get this lucky and believe me it's by luck any band makes it! It's always about the music first, fame is a side effect of lots of luck second!! Thanks so much, Fil. A while back I watched this negative reaction video and came away a little dismayed because I couldn't hear all the terribleness being claimed. I thought I must have a defective ear somehow because I couldn't hear the off notes. Good to hear your positive analysis

I'm glad you did this video, people are so used to perfection that they forgot the real magic is in imperfection. Regardless of studio recordings, live performance should stay untouched as much as possible.

Fil thank you for the voice of reason when it comes to GVF.
In this performance I would compare them more to The Doors because of the lack of having a bass being played, than that other band which I’ll refrain from saying their name.

These guys are great. Real live music, how refreshing. Love them. All musicians are influenced by other musicians. Being compared to Led Zeppelin shows how good they are! Great music and as usual, great video Fil.

I like them. I think the bass is pedal keyboard under the organ, watch his feet when visible. I think most of the LZ comparisons are based on the vocalist's style. These guys are only all of 20 years old. They should have a great career in front of them. Led Zep was seasoned, experienced musicians when first formed. The haters don't take that into account. Thanks for a great video.

Page was indeed an experienced, seasoned musician when Led Zeppelin recorded their first album, despite being only 24(!) That is still 3 years older than Jake, who was not yet 22 when GVF recorded their first album. Jones was 22, which is 4 years older than Sam was (18!), and even though Bonham was only 20(!), he was 2 years older than Danny (18!). To be fair, Josh (21) was 1.5 years OLDER than Plant was (20!). All very talented for their ages.

I love these guys, i don't have a professional ear, but i i know good music when i hear it,i have been around the best musicians in the business, in the 60's and early to mid 70's, it make me tear up when i read some of the HORRIBLE comments that ppl write, like Fil said, these ppl don't even sing or play, but yet they are arm chair critics, about the best band that has come to the rock scene and HOW REFRESHING, It is, i'm getting emotional, tears running down my face... Rant over!

I just got this analysis, Fil, and I like your approach.
You make very insightful comments about going from the live sound to TV. You may not know this one additional point: The sound system (soundboard to audience, soundboard to TV) is notoriously poor for Saturday Night Live. SNL musical guest history is littered with off performances. That being said, GVF seemed a bit nervous and off for their first song, and I think you are correct - not having a bass tied in to the drummer threw them off a bit too for the 2nd You're the One.
I personally know this - when the guys took off from part of their European tour to rest for Josh's voice, they came back to play fantastic live shows in the US in June-Aug. The show I saw had 6 bands in a special event, and GVF had everybody out of their seats the entire set (I was on the floor). Having seen concerts for almost 40 years, my opinion is they have terrific energy, enthusiasm, and enough catchy hooks to give them time to develop more. The next two or three albums will tell the tale.
    Thanks for doing this review.

I also adore your covers and original material and anyone here who has not become your Patron yet are really missing out! You need to go check that out asap dear listeners! Trust me, you will Never regret it! This is my most fav YT channel ever! And ALL of that is just MY personal opinion, and like you said, Fil, opinions are not right or wrong, they are just our personal likes or dislikes! That is why they are called your Opinion! I was also very impressed on your outstanding revelation to how our personal opinions are directly related and deeply rooted in our own personal feelings and experiences! (Something along those lines, anyway). Keep up the great work, Fil! Big Hugs from 'The Georgia Peach' !!!

What I find disappointing and strange is how there is so much hate on , of all places, TH-cam. Music is communal to me, the one thing everyone can unite and share. Music has no pulling apart; it bring us together, and doesn’t even need language. It is beyond that. The lyrics set to music add another dimension. Songs take a story and turn that story into something more.
    Thanks for another great session.

I've watched various footage of this band both live and video versions of their material while collectively they have that bluesy rockish Zepellin undertone my first thought was they are at staying true to that genre of rock and they obviously enjoy playing it. They will mature and expand their sound over time and will continue to develop into a great band. The band "Heart" developed their chops covering actual Zepellin songs around the Seattle area. These guys are on their way it'll be interesting in a good way watching these guys over the coming years.
