James Shelton Still the best that ever was. I've heard younger drummers in successful bands say they grew up studying Live at Leeds & to this day can't figure out how he was playing. Fun fact: Michael Madsen owns Mooney's Malibu beach house 🏡

Keith Moon was a lead drummer. Like all of the greatest performers he made people think he was doing everything spontaneously when he secretly knew every note of the music. He could go from a wall of sound to silence in no time. And, he had an absolute feel for the music. He was the Bacchus of Rock!

@@RecessMonkeys Moon was Tony Williams' favourite rock drummer, he said because he was completely free in his playing and he didn't care... If no one knows Tony Williams is one of the best jazz drummers ever.
And I agree about how The Who approached their live performances, they had the bigger guts to do what they did. No one else went so far, not even Hendrix, nor even Cream... the mix of chaos and order, of noise and silence, of pure frenzy and control, nobody in rock did it better

Phil I was there and remember it all very well. Thank you so much for educating your generation of the 'golden time' which I was lucky to live through. What is magic about their performance that night was me about 500,000 in side the fences and those on the hill had been listening to music since 10:30am in the morning, The Who were meant to come on about 12:00 but after most groups had a quick turn over, we found we were waiting for a very long time, about and hour and a half and of course people started booing but then with no introduction four war time massive search lights with blinding bright light were switched on causing every one to turn to stand up and turn around to shield our eyes. The result of this was for the first time to see the number of hippies there bayed in bright white light, a site I will never forgot. The lights were then turn up and stage lights came for The Who, Pete jumped up in the air shouting " Wake up you f**kers" and went straight into Tommy. They played what seem to be for ever and for the most part the audience due to being there so long mainly sat down for all other performers but we being up, stayed up and soon we were dancing, clapping, cheering and singing along to their records especially Baba Riley . I went to a lot of concerts back in those days but none compared to The Who............ Love Reigh on Me!!

I’m glad you mentioned Keith’s part in The Who. Pete Townsend testified to the fact that Keith Moon played drums like a lead instrument. It was telling that after his death, The Who lost quite a bit-even with Kenny Jones’ capable contributions. When John Entwistle died (“The Ox”), The Who we’re truly gone. Long Live Rock...

5:20 I attended a Who concert in Memphis Tennessee in 1971. It was LOUD but excellent. They played for two hours and my ears rang for several more. There was an interlude where the band took a break (except for Keith Moon on drums). They played organ sounds on a Revox tape machine and Keith continued to wail on the drum set. It was a concert I will never forget.

I was too young to see the WHO in their prime. All of the older, seasoned rock fans insisted that nobody could match or follow the WHO live. I bought the Isle of Wight DVD live and experienced it through my surround system. I was converted. The WHO was and will be the best live flat out rock band ever. The creative genius of Pete Townsend with his awesome composing ability, his power chord windmill/ pissed off style to highlight his talents, along with Roger's great rock voice.....toss in John thunder finger's phenomenal bass licks, and most importantly, in my opinion, Keith Moon's drumming made the WHO a force of nature in the 60s and 70s. They are still great, pushing on 70, but were never the same after Moon passed.

  • @klausrain111

One of the saddest things ever for me is never seeing them live. Looking at the comments, a few of them have said Pete's not a good guitar player. You kidding me? He's fantastic! Subtle, bombastic, melodic, take your choice. Not to mention, he played all that stuff while he jumped around like that. He and Keith Moon were two radically different sides of the same coin. It seems like they both entered alternate dimensions when they played live.

Went to see The Who at Bath Pavilion with Phil "Time Team" Harding when we were working on the Silbury Hill archaeological dig: they played the whole of Tommy and some old classics. Unreal. They were late on stage because Moon went AWOL. In my first band, Heap, with Mike Wedgwood (Caravan, Curved Air, Nicky James, Jon Entwistle) and George Hart (Second Hand), as a very young power trio we played, or tried to play, music by The Who and Cream, other power trios. Mike was well up to Entwistle's standard, but trying to play that stuff ......the folly of youth. "Go To The Mirror" was extraordinary. Entwistle played so darn fast that it was hard to see what he was playing - but he still anchored the root notes: he was a hero because he played a .... BASS SOLO .... on "My Generation," my least favourite Who song. Favourites? "I'm A Boy," "The Kids Are Alright," and "Behind Blue Eyes".....and Tommy! I cried every time he smashed a Rickenbacker - that's what I had and it took me five years to pay for it! Saw The High Numbers in The Thieves Kitchen in Worthing. Memories. Nice one, Fil!

@@jeffmcelroy5364 My father worked for RCA for years then moved over to Decca and always got tickets. I was really too young to truly appreciate the Tommy gig. What I remember most was how loud it was. I have vivid memories of the Forrest Hills show, I was 17 so yes, I'm that old. Outdoors at the old tennis center. It rained a lot that day, but it was a rain or shine gig. Had fabulous seats, 7th row center! Opening act was the 3 degrees (it was the 70's with lots of strange line-ups after all). Rained a bit then came CCR! That was amazing. Rained a bit, then the boys came out. Typically very loud. Also got my first contact high that night. Technical problems all over the place, feedback issues, lights flickering ... but it was AWESOME and I thought that was just part of the show! Pete tossed one guitar, a Ricky!, because of the tech issues. Roger throwing harmonicas at techies because of feedback and even going after one. Moonie and Pete both going nuts few times including some very off color remarks and especially when the tape messed up on Won't Get Fooled! The Quiet one was, well quiet and I still think fondly of the huge bass solo on My Wife. By the time the last encore was over the stage was a total wreck! Moonie was especially destructive that night. I managed a few debris souvenirs which I still have. There are a few very poor quality audience vids of the show. It was supposed to be filmed for real since it was a kickoff for Who's Next but the weather or Pete had it burned ... oh well. I've caught most of their tours over the years including some Pete and Roger solo gigs.

Thank you for bringing up the importance of confidence in a band. Not so much in one's own abilities, but in the abilities of your band members. Without that, you'll find your mind starts knocking on various anxieties- "is he going to remember the transition?" "Is she off beat?" All of these, in turn, hamper your own abilities as a player and detract from your individual performance, and the overall synergy of the group.
This is probably one of (if not THE most) important lesson of playing in a band vs playing alone in your bedroom. Find people you can play with and TRUST as musicians. Pick songs everyone is comfortable with. The net effect is always greater this way.

The Who are, a legendary British rock band formed in 1964. The band gained huge success through extraordinary live performances and is considered one of the most influential bands of the 60s and 70s and one of the greatest rock bands of all time. The Who became famous in their homeland both due to outrageous behavior during concerts - breaking instruments on stage after the performance (they were the first in this), and due to hit singles that fell into the Top 10, starting with the hit single in 1965 " I Can't Explain" and Top 5 albums (including My Generation). The first US Top 10 hit single was "I Can See For Miles" in 1967. In 1969 came the rock opera Tommy, which became the first Top 5 album in the US, followed by the successful Live at Leeds (1970), Who's Next (1971), Quadrophenia (1973). And of course the group Who is rightly inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Wow I was there too lol. Eddie money and the clash were the two opening acts. I remember the screen at the top of the 40 foot W H O letters behind the band. Very big speakers and very loud, indeed. Sorry to hear about the demise of the Pontiac silverdome. Lot of great concerts there over the years. So sad :((

I was in London in summer of 1978 . I remember my girlfriend and I going out for coffee ,and passing a newsagent . Front page “KIETH MOON DEAD ! “ About three blocks from we were staying . What a summer ...
Pete Townsend in my opinion was the best showman I’ve ever seen hands down. Watch the film , I’m not talking about Quad or Tom , but “The Kids Are Alright ! “ Pete was unbelievable , he didn’t waste time with hot licks, he was playing mostly first inversion power chords , and if that doesn’t give you an idea of how important rhythm is . He changed it up of courses , but watch his stops on the windmill, he just nails it , knows how to get the phrasing with the most punch . Creative to a degree that defies me , and I’m a technical player ...
I think Phil nails it, each member was a “ lead “ in his own right , yet they pull it off without tripping over one another . Incredible power trio instrumentally . No offense Cream etc. but The Who are the real power trio like no other .

Was lucky enough in Dec 1975 to have a cool uncle take me and a friend to see them at the very 1st concert at the Silverdome In Michigan. Was a sweet first concert for a really (really lol) young teen. 80,000 + people in the arena and the energy was electric. Have always felt so fortunate to see the original band. And what an introduction into the concert world which to this day I still dearly love. Thanks for the awesome analysis ❤️PS-I still have my ticket stub-it was $12😀

  • @kjeldpedersen666

Yeah - in theory this band shouldn’t be able to play at all, given the very individualist approach of the musicians. But they could, better than most, and that’s the miracle about The Who...
Very much approve in what you’re saying about Townsend’s dynamic songwriting. He nearly always worked in concepts/projects. The contents of their greatest album “Who’s Next” was really leftovers from a project he never got to finish - because the record company pressed them for a new LP.
If you’re a reader, read his self penned biography “Who I am”, it’s really brilliant.

Entwistle was simply the most developed bass player in the rock genre. There have been many virtuoso bass players who have done interesting and unique things, but nobody outside of the jazz world has come close to approaching his melodic sense and absolute command of the entire fretboard on the bass. Not to mention the sheer super-sonic speed of his unique fingerstyle of bass playing.

thanks Fil . One of the best reviews on the Who I have seen (musical ability and as a group). The fact that you bring up the dynamics of how the group interacted with themselves (as a group) is one of the reasons I have loved this filmed gig since I first saw it. You dont need to read books or biographies on the band, you only need to watch this gig to understand it all. And as good as he is, you can also see how Kenny Jones could never fill the hole that Moon left in this group when he passed away. Thanks again :)

I love watching Keith Moon playing here. Relishing every moment and smiling. He’s almost like a conductor of an orchestra back there.
They quite possibly had a bigger attendance than Woodstock at this Festival. They do have a very accurate number due to your Country’s rail system since people had to use it to get there and from that the authorities were able to get very close to the exact number. At least that’s what was said in the commentary video by the guy who filmed the concert.

    • @loosilu
      @loosilu 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Woodstock was 400,000, Isle of Wight was 600,000. The venue's sound system wasn't good enough, so they used the Who's sound system for the whole festival. Best PA system in the business. They rented it out to other bands when they weren't touring.

In the early 70s my encounter with the Who was a strange one indeed. We'd designed a stage set that included a couple hundred lights in a matrix. I used a "Cherry Chase" controller for the intro as the band came on the giant letters flowed across the stage to spell 'THE WHO" with WHO stopping and flashing. The band came, it was morning time, with them was someone I assumed was a Manager or Stage Manager . Keith was so quiet, he only spoke in whispers to John and John the same with Keith. Roger and Pete spoke loudly and often, especially Pete. I was not part of the conversation. But they all seemed hung over and not all that aware. I don't know if they used our stage lighting. I'd gone off on a setup for "Chorus Line" at the Shubert in New York...yeah, yeah we did those too. So I dropped off the Who for that season. Maybe someone can tell me if they saw an American Who tour with that lighting. I do know they went with our lighting board, cabling and power supplies for a couple years. Anyway. I consider Keith Moon the greatest and most creative drummer of all time. And Thunderfingers as the founding father of Rock Bass. I saw them many times in many venues, they never displeased.

As for Keith connecting with an audience, I think there's a greater sense of that applying when he has a kit like the one seen here. Before long, his kit became so huge that it was a barrier of sorts. I believe he wanted more drums than anyone else, but there's no sense here that he actually needs any more.

You got the gist of all that made the Who great. Four lead players who work together while still each remaining separate in their individual performance. And about their writing, how it goes through changes was very common. Like in this song, how it goes from being a swinging rocker to that little bit where it sounds like something mom and pop would like. They are each a show in himself but at the same time theres an incredible degree of tightness. Like a family that knows each of its parts are always going to be there and only the death of a member is ever going to change it.

Larger than life performances, The Who, Beatles, Black Sabbath and so much more. I feel sorry for successive generations not getting to see them. The greatest concert summer of love 1969 Woodstock. What a fabulous time for R&R. We had periodic albums & generally monthly industry magazines and would wait forever for someone to play nearby. Eight tracks were new high technology and the English Invasion had blown the doors wide open. News travelled so slow. We wouldn't hear about big gigs in Europe for weeks and days between domestic shows. So many young fans and the industry was taking off. News articles focused as much upon off stage antics as the sets and performances. So much talent, just a great time.
