Chase Langford has invented a distinctive visual language that is grounded in the natural and built environment while embarking into uncharted territory. His impactful depictions recall maps and aerial photography of sea coasts, mountains, farmland and cities through a calculated execution and highly refined draftsmanship.
Just as the West Coast Abstract Expressionists (1940 to 1970) found California’s striking landscape fertile ground, so does Langford as he draws upon his geographic environs both near and far.
Through his cartographic mastery, Langford contorts and synthesizes geographic elements, bringing forth paintings that are mysteriously familiar yet surprisingly unconventional. They challenge conventions of geography and landscapes, offering invigorating visions of space and place that transcend any specific locale, leading us to an exhilarating emotional experience.
Chase Langford is represented by galleries in: Seattle, Napa Valley, Healdsburg, Dallas, Maui, and Martha's Vineyard. His studio is in Cathedral City, CA near Palm Springs. (former Los Angeles studio shown in this video)
Chase Langford's paintings have been widely shown at one-person and group exhibitions in Los Angeles, New York City, Washington DC, Montreal, Palo Alto, Las Vegas, Long Beach, Napa Valley, Seattle, Dallas, Toronto and Palm Springs and included many corporate/public collections (often site specific commissions) such as Long Beach Musuem of Art, Keck School of Medicine at USC, Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, Star City in Sydney, Australia, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Monique Lhuillier, Inc., Caesar’s Palace, Dykema Grossett LLP, Sidley Austin LLP, Cohen & Lord, Meacham Oppenheimer, Inc., UBS, Nordstrom and Park Hyatt Aviara. He is in private collections in North America, Europe, Japan, Hong Kong, and Australia. Also in the private collections of Magic Johnson and the Saudi Royal Family.

Update -- I really don't paint only with natural light anymore. I think that was a bit of a "purest" or "romantic" idea. I now use a combo of natural and artificial light so I have more consistent light throughout the day.

Hi Zoe, I'm in total agreement with your comments. I LOVE Chases' considered and deliberate approach to his studio layout. I am, alas, so indolent and disorganised I could never accomplish. Quindi, I'm sure we both would/could develop further in our creativity by following his example. May I recommend researching a couple of vid. to you which may help your studio success; the English artists : F. Bacon and L Freud!

@@bencellini4200 Yes. Check the pix of Bacon's studio. Then check the art !!!! Everybody is different and has different needs. Chase's art is beautiful, but I'd feel trapped and choked in such a stark environment.

Great video, really enjoyed it. My studio is a fifth of yours I think, but I'm not complaining -- I've spent years painting from my kitchen! My biggest struggle at the moment is that I paint in a variety of media -- watercolours, acrylics, alcohol inks, acrylic inks and oils. I'd love to have a different station for each media (one day!!) but my studio is tiny. I find it gets messy and chaotic very quickly because of this problem, all the different media falling over each other. And a chaotic space leads to a chaotic mind, at least in my case. And yes, I also have an ironing board and bookshelf in my studio, as well as lots of textiles paraphernalia for when I was a creative embroidery student! Goodness, its sounding worse and worse as I type! I need an interior designer to help me out I think!

It's funny to me that you expressed concern about your personality on the video. Before I saw your comment, I was wondering how I could comment on this very thing without sounding stalkery. Lol I thought your personality and the way you presented the information was the best part! You seemed genuine, and avoided the irritating music and over the top enthusiasm that some others use. Good information. I'd love to see more videos, maybe of how you work? Thanks!

I'm a big fan of architecture and have a lot of architect friends. My career really took off when Gensler in LA sponsored a huge 40 painting solo show in 2008 (when they are at their Santa Monica location). At the opening, attended by 500+, two art dealers offered me representation. I still work with both of them today.

I am redoing the insulation and drywall in my studio, which means I had to move out completely. So now I get to re-think the lighting and what I’m going to bring back in. I really appreciate your tips! It never occurred to me to go all white. I’m going to have to ponder that one. I have wheels on almost everything. I love having rolling carts filled with different types of supplies so I can roll them up to my work area, depending on what I’m doing at the time. One is all of my colored pencils and current sketchbooks, for example. IKEA used to sell the best little clip on lights with really long cords. I’m glad I stocked up because I can’t find them anymore. So useful. And I’m going to create a book from my art. Great idea. Shutterfly often has discounts on little photo books.

      @Sebastian37s 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@cliffdariff74 in a way that's exactly what I tried to say by saying there is an emptiness. of course there are marvelous things out there in life that can fill our souls and they do it, for sure. Maybe you got confused because of the use of the word "sadly", no sadness in this regard, I used the word as an intensifier. I just tried to say that, in my mind, (I'm not an erudite) there is a kind of vacuum, existential emptiness I feel personally on life and has nothing to do with depression or anything like that, but for a strange reason (again, not from an erudite) art... Art suits perfectly and can take a life to plenitude. Of course we have to feel relatively ok about our lives in general before expecting art, or anything alike for that matter, to give us a purpose. Sorry if I can't explain further, English is not my mother tongue.

Very practical and informative. I am 75 and have never really ever had a studio for my art. I am currently retired and living in Estonia, converting our old barn into my studio. My wife will be retiring next year and I have to move my art out of the house in order to escape the vacuum cleaner. Your tips and comments have been a big help. I attended the San Francisco Art Institute back in 1969 after serving as an officer in the US Special Forces, From Green Beret to Hippy! then I attended the Art Students League in NYC for a while and then graduated from Monmouth University with a double BA degree in Art and Literature. The problem was, because of LSD, California Red Mountain Vin Rose, pot, and amphetamines, I remember almost nothing from all those years. I have been relearning my artwork and your nuts and bolts approach is refreshing. Thanks again

Your words (tone, volume, inflection, and intent) are smiling, even if you are not outwardly doing so. Hey Chase, I’m a full time artist from New York City for 10 years now and in the city it is such a luxury to have some space to work with, to have high ceilings that sometimes I have to mix everything together like personal/art/office all in one space and sometimes it’s just a mess and it is such a relief to see that it’s possible to have all of these things organized and separated to actually have a view of the mountains to actually have a storage nearby and to have a natural light . I know that being a painter is a crazy ton of work and you go through evolutions of the work space. Thank you so much for spending your time to share your amazing studio it is extremely well organized !!

I'm grateful to have a large easel, a gift from a friend who studied it up before passing it on, as it had a tendency to drop! (Thankfully it's been steady for me!)

Hi Chase. Your studio setup is excellent. Very spacious and organized. It is luxury to create a studio of this size. I am still searching the option to store my oil paintings. Best wishes. Rajiv Desai

Thank you for this video! It's fantastic. My husband recently mentioned that we need to build a studio for me. So I'm greedily soaking up all this great information, watched your 30 tips video first. My studio will likely only be 10 x 12 so thank you for the put everything on casters idea. Visual noise can be a distraction so limiting content to art supplies and painting everything white may really help me as well. Thanks again.

Most artists usually need more space, myself included. You saw my studio neat and tidy for the shoot, not when I've got multiple projects in full gear. But I am most grateful for what I have and have been able to make it "bigger" with some of the strategies I mentioned in the film. Best wishes to you!

I've been looking for ideas to help with my setup and your video is the best I've found. I'm fortunate enough to be able to use a spare bedroom in my house for painting and this was a big help. Very good advice on only having things in the room to use for painting. You know where everything is, and you're less distracted. Thank you..

Mr. Langford, I just stumbled across your TH-cam video, Creating a Great Art Studio, and am thrilled! Thank you for such detailed and essential information. I'm still working at an 8-5 job (it feeds my art!) but am making plans to paint full time. I'm prepping my home studio to make this leap within one year. Your ideas have stimulated my thinking, especially for necessary , functional furniture. THANK YOU!
