Andrew - you are speaking my language, my friend... I have just completed my dream Art Studio... just celebrating 72 years and is finally here. I have been an artist and maker for most of my life, primarily in wood, in particular, but not exclusively, a toymaker with a mission and overarching desire to enchant, young and old alike. Over the last 5-6 years I have felt a gravitational pull toward putting color on canvas. So I am a novice and this arena...but it seems to me the real doorway to making art, is ones call or passion to do so. And the space one creates for oneself, wherever and whatever that might be, is, I believe, so key to one's ability to unleash a creative spirit. I have worked in large and very small spaces , and although I now have the resources to create exactly the kind of space I have dreamed of, I have always sought to create in each instance, a space that energetically inspired. I have come in at the other way too...from taking a space that seemed impossible and turning it into a space that deeply inspired me. This is always one of the very first things that I do in designing any new space...reflecting on how I will be and how I would be wanting to move in this new space... Not only functionally, but emotionally and energetically. So I've done a lot of thought on this, but before going forward with my tentative plans, I thought I would peruse TH-cam with the query of "setting up an art studio"... I've looked at numbers of videos, with gratitude for those who have taken the time to share, and have garnered good tips from some, but none have resonated with the kind of thoughtfulness and heartfulness as has yours... I have subscribed to your Channel, so thank you for taking the time to share what has made a difference for me, and what I am sure will make a difference for many others. Around six years ago, my wife and I spent some memorable time in New Zealand...if we should ever visit there again, and that's not a remote possibility, as her birthplace is Australia, I would love the opportunity to visit. Blessings be, Michael Arbuckle
Stumbled upon your channel a few days ago, Andrew. It's the last day of June 2018 and coincidentally it finds me setting up my very first studio space. I learned a lot seeing and listening to this episode. I'm 74 with many interests, and art is a new one. There's little time to get it right. No reason we can't make the studio both functionally efficient and inspiring too. I'm finding art goes hand in hand with photography, writing and psychology. Like a palette of colors, they are disciplines that lend themselves to being readily blended. Each contributes to the stories we seek to tell. It makes sense to keep our research and our library of books, computer programs and tools together within easy reach.
Just love how professional, but thrifty, crafty, but humble, talented, yet learns along with his audience...you, are def the guy that inspired me to dive deep into painting. Thanks for that andrew! I've grown years in a short amount of time due to your videos.
You mentioned that one requirement for the objects you keep around for inspiration is that they put a smile on your face. I kept waiting to see you smile and you finally did for a sec at the end. You are an amazing artist and you inspired me today, hope to see you smiling more on your videos. Thank you .
Thanks again Andrew. My Dad passed a few yrs ago and I moved to northern Ontario from Vancouver to be with my mom and brother. I'm setting up a studio in my Dads garage. I showed my boyfriend your videos and he is making me a wall easel, now we have the final key, the lighting. Thank you so much for making these videos. I now can paint full time. Loving my life...
Thank you for making time to put together all the step-by-step videos. As a casual painter for years, watching your approach has been a real inspiration to me. I hope to be stepin’ up my painting with your help. Thank you!
Wow! you really helped me get a grip on my feeling of being overwhelmed. Thank you. I have a small space although it is larger than the small bedroom I was forced into with Art, sewing, scrapbooking, and crafting. All in a very small room that also took on storage for other things. It soon got so bad I could not even walk in it. Things are getting better. Thank you Andrew!
You are the first artist I have seen who has recommended Kautzky as a resource. I have learned so much from his work, and from yours, Andrew. You do top quality work. Thank you for giving us an inside look at your painting procedures and your studio.
This video clip is SO welcome. I have had to move 5 times in the last 18 months so I am really impressed how easily your systems are relocatable. Thank you so much. My friend and landlady was totally interested in the ventilation section. I think we are going to implement this in my room. Now I just have to find out how to store my finished and "in progress" canvasses.
Your videos are helpful and I love how your studio tour is different than all the other studio tours on youtube, you key in on points and not just showing off all of your materials but rather give tips on how to set up and what works for you.
Thanks Andrew for making all things art interesting and giving us the down and dirty about things most artists don't share like setting up an art studio, brushes, paints and necessities.
My husband's mother is from New Zealand! Yes, so beautiful there! And glad to see you're an animal lover! Blessings! Keep up the great work! Praise God for all good things! Take care and thank you for sharing!
Loving your channel Andrew. I hope one day I have a studio close to something like yours. so far I got the inspiration. please keep doing this videos, they are pure gold, specially for self taught artist like me.
Love your new digs in New Zealand. My Dad was there for R&R during Ww2. The majestic country is all he spoke of during his 4 yr.tour.. Your dog and cat are a must.. Thankyou for your excellent instruction. Hiyo from NJ
Thanks Andrew. Im a multimedia artist as well and you have inspired and helped me be better. love your space, art and animals...and back yard! shine on brother. ty...shawn in America, Roseboro, NC population 1200.
Thanks for this video. I had to move from large professional spaces in the US to a tiny NZ bedroom as well and my creativity has really taken a hit. I needed this attitude adjustment.
Happy to see you settled again, can't wait for your next upload. It was interesting seeing your studio setup, I'll reassess ours. Thank you for your generosity & dedication, you are inspiration personified.
Looking at other artist’s studios never gets old. I really appreciate seeing the change from large to small studio! Also, I realize that I should be thinking more about ventilation.
It´s definitely worth the smaller space, contra that amazing view outdoors into the most beautiful nature. I wish we had that here i Denmark. Looking forward to the video with the light, because i´m on the crossroads myself what to do next.
I love that you shared your first oil painting in this video! I'm curious to know how long ago you made it? - Your current work is absolutely stunning! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I'm using the Internet to learn how to paint and your channel has really been a gold mine! I'm learning so much... tones, composition, asking forgiveness - not permission. All top quality tips and tricks. Hats off to you!
Thank you Andrew. You are my inspiration. Perhaps one day I will be able to paint in such beautiful studio as yours. I wish you successful and satysfaction in your new studio and all the best for you and your wife in a new place in New Zealand .
You are a fabulous artist and your tour of your studio was the best I've seen: informative, to the point, entertaining and inspiring. Thank you for sharing your time and space and kind regards from Ohio.
Wish you great luck in your fantastic new domicile and studio. Always enjoy your clips. And your tutorial dvd Southwest Seascape that is a valuable refresher course even when I'm doing a portrait. You are a great instructor.
Love your animals. They clearly love YOU! Thanks for this - I'm going to share it with my partner. We're renovating our home right now and part of the plan is to incorporate a studio space. Currently I paint in the dining room and the light is challenging. Thanks for the inspiration and the things to consider! Again, I'm watching you EVERY DAY. You rock.
Thank you for informative video. I recently move to my sons house and have a small back space in the basement for my studio. I can’t work there because if he clutter. I am planning on doing a clutter free studio zone in a few weeks. The space is one third the size of my former studio. I do pottery, jewelry, and resin painting. This video helps me set up functioning zones. Thank you.
Great tutorial. You may have posted it Jul 3, 2017, but it is still applicable in 2021! I'm setting up a new home studio, and am trying to work out what the best way to turn a spare bedroom into my studio. This video was a big help. Thanks for the input.
It's the best video I hv seen on setting up the studio, to the point and precise information, otherwise I was so overwhelmed by the brands and types of furniture.... Thanks alot
Andrew, i just came across your channel! and i just want to say something. your channel is everything that i need. covers absolutely every aspect of art and artist's life, thank you and very well done! wish you loads of success!
What a great place to live Andrew. Hope it is worth downsizing for that view. Thanks for all your invaluable advice. I have just downsized myself and will be trying to create a working space in my garage.
Wonderful words of wisdom ... just had my basement finished this year, a 28 x 40 space, and my studio takes up about half of it, there is a fan vent over the open bathroom area, (surrounded by shoji screen), now after watching this, I should have had another installed right over my painting area, will check into that thanks to your tips ...
Just now came across your video...this is what I've been looking for, for my own studio! thank you! I booked mark this and will forward it to my builder!!!
I love your practical info and brilliant sense of humor. There is hope for creating a studio I want and love! And I am smiling at your advice about being surrounded by what makes you smile. Immediately thought of the dinosaur-type sculpture I created in college. It's up in the attic and I miss it. I am going to name it! 'TIME'. IT'S ABOUT TIME!
thanks Andrew, Great quick clip and fun to see your sense of humor shining through : ) I just happen to be packing up, fitting my life in a small moving container as well - a new home and smaller studio ahead. I am looking forward to more time dedicated to painting , so it was inspiring to see you settling in. Good luck in New Zealand. It looks heavenly. Also, I think you were teasing us with that gorgeous painting of the bird in the background. I can't wait for that video!
Very informative video. I am "organized challenged" and I have finally turned to TH-cam to find some tips. TH-cam literally has everything and anything one needs to know about a subject. Still it is painful to start this learning process of how to organize but with such a small house I have no alternative. Great video as I am converting a small room into a studio also. Excited about your move to NZ and looking forward to what you discover to paint. Many thanks for your abundant sharing especially for beginners like myself who can't afford school or art classes.
Hi Andrew - i really love your work and style i wish i can be as good as you one day..i will follow you every way pssible to become a good artist love your drawing and painting which has inspired me to pick up my pencils and brushes again thanx
Thank you for this. I'm trying to set myself up and have been doing research. While there are a thousand videos of people showing off their studios, there are almost none of people explaining the reasoning in a way that lets others adapt the information for their own need.
On point again Andrew! Am just in the process of figuring out a new layout for my studio which will also need to double as a guest room now that Baby 2 is about to claim the former spare room... Some great ideas to consider there - enjoy NZ, my brother went 8 years ago for a job and has no intention of moving home any time soon :-) Beautiful country!
Thank you so much for posting this video. I needed to hear this. I am a clutter-hound and I waste time trying to find things in my art studio. I like how you talked about Zones. I am going to implement these things right now in my studio. When I am finished it will be organized and I will be ready to work. Thank you so much. By the way, Your studio looks so awesome; it's so cozy and welcoming. :) I am subscribing to your videos to hear more.
I am just now setting up my painting studio. in my printmaking studio! Quite a challenge, but your organization of a small space is inspirational! Love your work, you are a master!

Thank you! I'm new to your channel, which I discovered randomly while searching oil painting tutorials. Thank you for your sincerity and for genuinely sharing your knowledge and experience with aspiring painters like me. I watched several videos this evening taking notes. Joined your Facebook Page and subscribed to your website. Merci beaucoup!
Thankyou for this video! You mentioned things that I as a student didn’t take into consideration. I now have an idea of things that should be included into my new studio other than just what inspires me and functional working space. A thoughtful friend of mine recommended this video to me so kudos to them for introducing me to your channel! Again, thankyou:)
Hi Andrew, this video is really cool ( better said, I like you) love your humor you added here, and the great tips... the ventilation is a must for me, so have to figure out how to get this done, seeing as I'm alone, I'll have to hire someone to do this for me, let's hope he won't charge an arm and a leg :). again thanks!! much appreciated!! hope you enjoy that gorgeous place a long time !!
This is awesome man glad to see you have a partner who supports your passion and its all engines go. Just found your channel and will look forward to getting into your vids. Cheers.
hay Andrew, its nice inspiration for making/adjust a good studio . . . . . I am suffering the lighting problem , so waiting for your next video. Wish that will help all of us. Tack Care .
Great timing with the video, I was just thinking this morning that I hadn't heard from you for a while. The next thing I know I turn on you tube and there you are! Really good video and glad to see you have settled into your new home. :-)
Loved seeing your small studio. Got some great ideas from it. I would like to know more about your computer design area. What programs you use. And how you use them to design your works. Just starting my journey and am learning a lot just from all these quick tutorials. Thanks
Thanks so much for this video! I live in a 2 bedroom apartment and my kitchen is my studio. This is so helpful as I am trying to make my space more usable! :)

The painting you did of the Wanaka mountain is one of my favorites. Great work, MrTischler.
Felt like hearing from an old friend again. Am in the process of downsizing myself and you have made me think more clearly.
Very useful video especially the extractor fan. Your blacking out your studio is good for focus. For lighting, have you tried daylight bulbs?
Thank you Andrew. You are my inspiration. Perhaps one day I will be able to paint in such beautiful studio as yours. I wish you successful and satysfaction in your new studio and all the best for you and your wife in a new place in New Zealand .

Hey Lori, thanks for the comment. Yes, there ar a pit of hornbills on the way. A "how to paint feathers tutorial" me thinks.
Wow what a lovely studio ! I think you did a very great job please enjoy it ,keep going ,I liked your first painting ...
A very appropriate guide for me at this time when I will be reorganizing my art space. I like the idea of zones, especially. Thank you!
Very informative video. I am "organized challenged" and I have finally turned to TH-cam to find some tips. TH-cam literally has everything and anything one needs to know about a subject. Still it is painful to start this learning process of how to organize but with such a small house I have no alternative. Getting out of one's comfort zone to start changing one's house/studio environment is quite the challenge.
Thank you for this beautiful video. Your presentation style is very impressive, and your integrity shines through. It reflects in your work too.
Glad to see you back!
love the window ventilation unit! currently I have a fan on reverse in mine and I turn on the overhead fan as I airbrush.
nice, really like to watch tour of your backyard!
That seascape is particularly good!
Hey Kelly! Congrats on Baby 2!
This really made me happy! So well-thought through, organized space AND an entertaining video on top! Love it!
