    I've loved this song for years, especially the cello part. Using a cello as the bass/rhythm guitar is incredibly creative and he holds down a great groove.

    • @SiqueScarface
      @SiqueScarface ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was under the impression that the bass guitar was developed as a carry-on version of the cello and/or the bass, when amplifiers became widespread, and the big sound board was no longer necessary. Jazz and Swing bands still use the bass or a cello instead of a bass guitar.

    • @johnhmaloney
      @johnhmaloney ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SiqueScarface It was developed as a smaller version of an upright bass, with the same range, to allow bassists to move around onstage. The cello is tuned somewhat higher than a bass. It intersects with the bass range, so it can fulfill that function. It just can't go quite as low.

    Every time I listen to this song, it feels like the first time. It just pulls you in starting with the bass laying down a rhythm followed by that great banjo roll. You feel like bobbing along when these dark minor vocals kick in with a little dance. It’s so absurd that you can’t help but smile. Such a brilliant song.

      I'm not sure why, but this song/band (I only really know them for this song) always reminds me of the song "Anthem for the Already Defeated" from the movie "The Battery". If you've never heard of it, both the movie and song are worth checking out.

    • @barry7920
      @barry7920 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I wouldn't call those vocals beautiful, but they are strikingly different - this band isn't trying to look like or sound like everyone else and it just works - love everything about this song and the video.

    • @lorehammer40k4
      @lorehammer40k4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't realize we were talking about what was beautiful, because then I'd agree with you, and it's not that that I think they even really sound that similar, just more that I get like the same vibe from them that's very hard to actually describe.

    Much of the video is filmed in Toronto, some parts within a short walking distance of my apartment. The CN Tower is clearly visible in some shots. The part you thought was New York is near the Yonge & College subway station, where I am just about to go for lunch after viewing this. Other parts are filmed in the Canadian Prairie Provinces. The band is from Regina, Saskatchewan, and so is the production company, Two Brothers Films, which made the video --- but they film in many locations. Toronto is a major film production centre. The director of this remarkable video is Zach Wilson.

      This song introduced me to the Dead South and it is absolutely killer. Seen it many times and read many comments, but the video is hardly mentioned. The recording and editing is awesome. Watch it again and see how well the different cuts line up. No easy feat.

      @@robertarisz8464thanks for the heads-up, thought it looked familiar! Also pretty sure the music shop is Amoeba Records and the old timey bar is Comstock Saloon, both in San Francisco.

    • @calderqueen7987

      The video seems to be filmed mostly in Regina and areas outside of the City with Toronto a secondary location and a few shots from inside Great Western Brewery as part of the Original 16 Brewery Sessions series. (look it up for great early Colter Wall and Dead South songs) The record shop is Vintage Vinyl and Hemp Emporium, the fountain is at Regina City Hall, the stream is Wascana Creek, the rural areas are someone's canola field likely a few miles from Regina, there are shots taken in the city's downtown area - but some of the more interesting city shots appear to be in Toronto.

    The video was shot in bits and pieces on location in various parts of Canada. I recognize city locations from Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg and Toronto. And possibly Brandon, Manitoba too. On top of that, there are prairie landscape shots near canola fields and streams. And, of course, a record store and many hotel rooms.

      I just found a FB post from Two Brothers films. I was wrong about the locations other than Regina and Toronto. All of the shots are live, and as a different person commented, if it wasn't for some of the bystanders bopping in time to the music it would look like green screen work. To be fair, ordinary neighbourhoods in Regina, Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Brandon look a lot alike, so I was fooled.

    This s😢ong reminds me of the Rocksteady number, "Draw Your Brakes", by the singer, Scotty, off of The Harder They Come album....thanks for turning me on to the music of some fellow Canadians...they really do raise some interesting crops in Saskatchewan. Fun fact: Jack Bruce, the great Scottish bass player for the Cream was classically trained on the cello.

    So back in the before times, I was walking through the local supermarket and started whistling this song. From the next aisle over I hear somebody else whistling along, then another person joins in from the aisle on the other side of me. I walk to the end of the aisle with the other whistlers keeping pace in their aisles. We get to the end of our respective aisles, look at each other and start doing the snap-n-strut for a few beats then we all stop and go on about our business. Not a single word spoken, just a nod of understanding.

    Greetings from Cancuckia eh! Yeah these guys are legit! A lot of southwestern Ontario bands put on the clothes and play "country" music but as the saying goes they're All Hat No Horse. Neil Young meets Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem!

    I love these guys. It just occurred to me that one of the places where they filmed (with all the yellow flowers) reminds me of one of the opening shots of the Corner Gas movie. I wonder if it's the same place. These guys are from Regina, after all.

    this band on my playlist! some funny lyrics! I been fascinated by a song, composed by a Brazilian composer named Accioly Neto, sung by hundreds of singers. its called "espuma ao vento, foam to the wind" and this is probably my favorite version of it, It's the Ney Mato Grosso interpretation. It's awesome, so clean! the man is in his 80's and still singing! check it out! the poem is something else too! totally worth knowing this piece! So many versions of this tune in many different voices and styles!

    I am fairly certain most of this was filmed in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. You can see the CN tower in the background a bunch and a lot of the areas are super familiar to me. Those Green P parking signs and the Pizza Pizza on the corner were basically my 20's.

    You really have to react to the Bridge City Sinners next! "Song of the Siren", "Witches' Wrath" and "Devil Like You" would all be great choices.
