  • In the Dirt Shed Show this week we're wondering if modern mountain bikes can even come close to retro bikes in terms of superstar status!? In 20 years' time, will we walk into a bike shop and marvel at the 2022 'retro' mountain bike hung on the wall, or will it still be all about the bikes from the start of the MTB movement?

    There's a reason old 26ers are still highly sought-after for commuter builds. They look gorgeous and still handle really well on city streets and light trails. Doubt anyone will be cruising to cafes on these modern 2-wheeled monster trucks in 30 years.

    I'm personally a fan of modern bikes that look retro. My favourites, and probably the best examples, are steel full-sus bikes like Cotic and Starling, with the clean, simple lines of 90s bike frames, only with modern geo and components.
    They remind me of modern retro motorcycles, such as the Triumph Bonneville range, that look very similar to the classics of the 60s but feature modern tech and reliability.

  • @ZOB4

    Neil’s got it nailed down - the only reason the old stuff is cool is because MTB was new and you wanted it because it was cool at the time. Today’s stuff will be the things people getting into the sport now will think was awesome when they’ll looking back on their younger days. What makes that old stuff seem cool isn’t the stuff - it’s the memories and feelings that you attached to it.

    • @stujm8376
      @stujm8376 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand where you're coming from, but remember when it all started. I was about 14 and went from road to MTB and never went back. I don't think there's ever going to be a time that happens again because there was nothing like it before and nothing has divided cycling so much since........

  • @Nick_CF
    @Nick_CF 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I agree with Martyn. Like with everything, a little something dies when tech gets to a certain threshold. There is some soul that is just not there. Bikes of today will never have the hype that the bikes of old have now. Simple as that.

    Back in 1992/93 a friend and I toured NZ for 6 months. He on his Klein Adroit and me on my Ti Kona Hei Hei. We hung racks with pipe hangers for our panniers and would remove the racks when we found ourselves in cool mountain biking locations. Word travelled fast about us and our bikes and when we arrived somewhere, say Rotorua, bike shops already knew about us which led to instant connections and amazing group rides. This was because of our bikes and maybe a little about two dudes using them for what they were not intended for. I don't believe that would happen today. Back then the boutique brands stood out more. You took notice at a trailhead if someone rode up on IF. Is that still the case? There's just so many brands making good bikes out now I think they get lost amongst themselves and nothing shouts at you like a Klein did in 90's.

    Evolution of MTB has been huge and spectacular for the last 15-20 years but naturally it began to stagnate lastly and it's becoming less and less interesting not to say a bit boring... but that's completely normal when things tend to perfection... considering that perfection doesn't exist.... and is always perfectible ;-)

    I think the biggest challenge with hanging a modern mountain bike on the wall is that you need about 3x as much space and they will hang another foot further into your room. Retros are nice and compact to make for easy art :D

    • @gmbn

    I agree that we are in a second “golden age” of mountain biking. I wonder if we will look back at current bikes as the last of the truly analogue bikes. Kind of like cars from the turn of the millennium, “young timer cars”, are looked upon as being the sweet spot between technology making them reliable and good to drive, but before too many computers started getting fitted and performance, rather than driver enjoyment being prioritised.
    Also, as an Orange rider, my bike still looks like their classic models…

    Bikes from the 90s and a few early 00s represented hey day bikes and also.major jumps.... I think anything now would have to represent a giant leap.
    Maybe something like the first 29r DH would have on a wall, or maybe te first Fast forward geo from Mondraker.
    Anything wall worthy now and moving forward will have to Tech or design leaps.

    • @Tony_P

      Hey, That's a really interesting point! We feel that bikes of the 90s had so many experimental and distinct features. There were some rather crazy designs. In the past 10 years, mountain bikes have seemed to become a lot more standardised in the way they look. Obviously, there has also been some crazy innovations in recent years but, nothing drastically visual has changed. It'll be so cool to see where the future takes us! 👍

    Some of the retro bikes like the Pace RC's, Klein Adroit, Ritchey Plexus, Raleigh DynaTech, are beautiful compared to modern carbon frames, and certainly evoke nostalgia and that amazing 90's golden era - when development was rapid, even if they do ride terribly compared to modern rigs

    And that gorgeous Klein hardtail has 3x, and I'm a 3x forever kind of guy. And the best compliment to a great paint job are plated components, then and now. And sure, some of the new bikes will become classic collectibles, I think, innovative bikes like the latest Scott Spark with its hidden rear shock, tho' one has to wonder about the long-term durability of carbon frames--will a rider be able to take out a carbon bike and treat it like a decades-old metal bike? Maybe and if so, cool. But carbon seems shaky to me, the way it cracks when it experiences a hit it wasn't designed to take. But overall, I think retro cool is all about styling and simplicity and rarity and even Schwinn Sting-Rays, my all-time favorite retro bike, have that because despite the huge sales numbers, Schwinn painted them in lots of different colors with lots of different bars. And retro is about experience, too, and the Sting-Ray was the greatest experience of all for a kid on the street or in the dirt.

      Carbon has _better_ longievity than both steel (where some corrosion is almost inevitable) and aluminium (where even gentle flexing/vibrations cause fatigue that makes it weaker and weaker over time). Yes, that about carbon and _hits it wasn't designed to take_ is true - however, generally the old-treasure metal bikes that are still in good condition aren't ones that have seen much abuse either.

      @@leftaroundabout Thanks for your response and I'm certainly hopeful that carbon bikes are strong and useful for decades to come. And my concerns are probably based on not seeing that passage of time yet, plus the unknown of working or dealing with carbon as a restoration project. And for decades we've all been working with metal parts on cars, motorcycles, bicycles, whatever. Except newer cars and such, yikes, too much plastic and gizmos and a higher probability of disposal than renewal, sadly. And you're right, there are lots of metal bikes that have never seen much use. Once, as I was cycling to work, I stopped at a Saturday morning yard sale to look at a 10-speed from the '70s. And the gent said his mother-in-law had given him the bike new--and, with a chuckle, he said he only rode it once, as though it was beneath him to ride a bicycle. His loss, certainly, tho' I had the good sense to simply say it was a nice bike and that I hoped it would find a good home.
