    Do you think there is a cost of MTB crisis? What do you think is causing the price hike? Will we see prices return to ‘normal’? Let us know your thoughts 👇

      Kudos to you guys for actually calling Brexit out!
      Ultimately if the basics of demand and supply tip a little bit more (i.e. more supply/less demand) then I see a resurgence in deep discounting - mainland Europe will benefit, but the UK will see less impact as supply is managed by only a few key players and grey importing has become harder.

      So yep Brexit has definitely caused a hike in prices I took a 4 year sabbatical from the mountain bike industry just as E bikes were booming and now they cost more than my car!

      Its companies profiteering for ther share holders. Feul companies, energy companies, supermarkets n most retailers are creating this price increase on everything. I bet none of them have a lower yearly profit n most will be doubling profits from this price fixing. Claiming its cost of living n not them wanting to beat last years profits to increase ther companies values. Im just happy i have my tinfoil hat to protect me 🤣

    Think about this for a second GMBN.... some high spec mountain bikes are costing as much as a 2023 Kawasaki ZX6R supersport bike capable of 160 MPH on a race track. Think of all the engineering, manufacturing, R&D required, plus tech like traction control, antilock braking system, slipper clutch, dampened showa suspension, digital fuel injection, ignition system, TFT Display, enormous NISSIN brake kit ON TOP OF a wet sump liquid cooled 636cc 16 valve DOHC engine.
    I get it, mountain biking is fun as hell but the prices are actually NUTTY.

      Absolutly agree! I don't get it. Motocycle manufactures have so much r&d to bring a new bike on the market. They have to build individuel parts just for one model! Bike manufactures just need to build a frame and combine it with the always same sram or shimano parts! I don't believe that it's that expensive as they want us to believe!

      I agree 100% that if you look at a modern mtb or emtb you cannot see the value in them. The KTM RC390 the KTM 500EXC the Yamaha R7 & T7 etc etc all represent better value and resale value. Ive given up on mtb because im sick of travelling to destinations and have expanded my other hobbies instead. Only ridden my emtb twice this year and downhill bike not at all.

      I agree. However, one factor with mountain bikes is they don't sell as many as motorcycles so they don't have the manufacturing scale to lower prices. They have to make more profit per unit. But still, $5K - 10K for a decent bike is too much.

    • @timm6876
      @timm6876 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jefft275 Just how many of a particular model of any brand motorcycle do you think they sale? I don't have numbers, but I don't see any more of a particular model of motorcycle than I do of a mountain bike. Then you look at durability of said motorcycle, vs the crap the bike companies put out. SMH

    I don't think the prices will go down, even if raw materials will become cheaper again. Very simply because we are willing to pay these ridiculous prices, so there is not motivation for the likes of Shimano to actually lower the prices again. They will just catch that extra profit.

    • @politan83
      @politan83 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think, even with willingness to pay at a certain level, competition and innovation can still lead to lower prices. Many people were willing to pay a lot more in the past for appliances like refrigerators, yet these have gotten a lot cheaper since in the last several decades. Even if I'm willing to pay $50 for a chain, I would eagerly go for one of similar quality for $30.

    • @DD-sr9xm
      @DD-sr9xm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Prices don’t go down, that’s called deflation and it’s very rare. It’s also the biggest fear of central banks, even more than inflation. So prices won’t go down. The hope is the rate of increase slows while incomes catch up with prices.

    • @bensonr2
      @bensonr2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DD-sr9xm That not necessarily true. This is a luxury good that's subject to more ups and down in demand, competition and supply. Deflation doesn't happen for goods like milk and eggs because they are already sold at bare minimum profit. Look at something like televisions and computers. When you account for inflation we pay far less then we did 30 years ago. Biking as a sport is growing and although that increases demand it also increases the likelihood that more competition may come and try to undercut on pricing.

    • @garydewberry
      @garydewberry 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DD-sr9xm not true at all, price televisions. My first big screen I bought was a 52" LCD...it cost me $2000 and this was over 10 years ago...you can get a 75" for less than half of that and there's no comparison in the picture quality. • @DirtlovR
      @DirtlovR 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True this. Bike and gear are a one off expense (for a couple of years) but when you live outside of mountainous area every trip costs a considerable amount of money - petrol, a place to stay, food, lift. If you go on trips often it can easily reach a cost of good, new bike per year.

    • @hippiebits2071
      @hippiebits2071 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This observation is very on point. It's one thing to purchase a relatively expensive tool for the job that can be enjoyed for many years. Quite another to throw tons of money away on fuel that is expensive right now for no good reason. Even living 20 miles from the nearest trail I feel this way. It would be difficult to justify an actual road trip to ride elsewhere right now.

    Having been away from mountain biking for 10 years, and recently come back to it, it must be said that a large part of this massive cost comes from media channels such as your own. You normalised spending the value of a good used car on a mountain bike, and make videos on “budget beginner” bikes that still cost four figures. It’s actually insane, and sadly it’s not recognised by those that live and breath the sport. As many others have said, prices will increase, they will never come back down, they never do in any profit making industry and biking will be no different, and you will normalise it. An amazing adventure can be had on a £300 used hard tail and given the times we live in you would do well to not only remember that, but actively promote and normalise it!

    • @SteelR4t
      @SteelR4t 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      This... very much. It always irritates me how bike media channels say that "Budget" is "around £1500". I've never paid anywhere close to that for any of my bikes, and they're more than capable. All the time people pay this sort of money and subscribe to that sort of mindset, the prices will stay where they are. We should vote with our wallets a whole lot more!

    I feel like some companies take advantage of this crisis and inflate prices just for extra profits. Will not name the company, but the same hardtail bike model as last year, with worse components costs almost 50% more (+500 euro) than it did in 2021. They actually put worse parts on the new bike, but the price went up almost 50%, that's crazy and there is no way it's justified.

    • @Anglo-Daxon
      @Anglo-Daxon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It works as a chain, raw material goes up 10%, manufactures of components put price up 10% to keep their profit margins, assembly 10%, shop 10%… something that’s £10 is now £14.61 - the companies are now making more money because keeping the same margins but on a now higher priced part but justify it with “we’re paying 10% more too” and now the cost is 46% higher than before.

    No prices will not drop, the best you can hope for is the increases level off. Shipping costs went crazy post pandemic and following the blocking of the Suez Canal but are dropping now, its not just the excessive costs it is the huge delays causing stock outs that screw everyone up!! Material prices are a factor but a small one, BIkes are not massive products, there is probably less the 50 cents of steel in a chain, but the impact of energy costs and employment costs on manufacturing we are stuck with ☹. And with appologies to everyone outside of the UK for the final rant!!! Brexit has made a difference. If you look at the online stores in Europe their prices are almost always less than UK prices, so when you take your bike on holiday take the opportunity to refresh your drivetrain while you are there 😁

    Two years ago I bought a new chain (and a spare) for my 10-speed drivetrain. Since its a consumable part, I don't buy the super high-end version. Was around 12€. Last week I fixed up my neighbours kids bike with the same drivetrain, but the cheap option was sold out at the lbs. So I bought the cheapest option they had still available and it was 40€. Cheapest option I could find available online was 28€. By now my original cheap chain from two years ago is back in stock at the online retailer for 21€.
    My point is: Not only did prices increase, but availability became an issue as well. If you need a part quickly, the cheaoest option might not be available and you have to dive deeper into your wallets. I do try to have spares for my most important parts and have some old componentry lying around, but my income and my apartment (flat for UK people) have limits.

    Bikes are expensive. True.
    Riding itself doesn't have to be.
    Of course, if you insist on an endless flow-trail with mirror smooth finishes and an uplift, then eating at a restaurant and staying at a hotel .... that's a different thing ....
    If you get out and ride a local trail, it is almost "free". Sure, pads, tires, fluids, grips, chains .. etc ... but there is no $100/day rental or entry fees.
    In Costa Rica a bike park costs you $8 a day. No uplift though in many, or +$8 for half a day of crowded shuttling on a truck.
    Or you e-bike shuttle ... or normal-bike pedal up.
    Sure with kids you have to stay at a decent place, and you don't want all your crap stolen... and at 50 I wouldn't sleep in a park (like I would when I was 20 and broke and visiting a contest in a country I couldn't afford) :O

    Everything functions properly th-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Nothing was damaged in the box aside from a decal on the fork. The decal was missing a piece of a corner but I ended up peeling them off anyways. Assembly is easy BUT make sure you tune up the derailleurs. Both the front and rear need adjusting. I'd advise going to a bike shop but I opted out and put in 10+ hours with the help of TH-cam. Ended up fraying a shifter cable but all in all I learned from the experience. The Brakes work well but the front caliper needs adjusting or at least mine did because the rotor was rubbing against the pads. Make sure you swap out the seat, grips, and pedals. For the short run you'll be fine though. I've read that this bike isn't built yet for hard trails but I just need it for the city. PA has some of the worst roads and being in a mountain this was a great choice. Worth the investment!

    Brexit excuse is Bullshit most products come from Asia not EU and we have favourable trade deals with Japan etc. The EU have same problems as us so using Brexit as an excuse is just a political lie. Keep your political views out of the bikeshed? Not everyone is EU loving flunky. Perhaps Mr Ashton should move his bikeshed to Brussels or the Yarpie to Capetown if the UK is expensive?

    I went from being a daily rider to maybe twice this entire summer. A lot of that rests on the fact that my bike needs have changed and I can’t justify spending close to $4000 for a relatively entry level bike (stumpy comp Al). I can’t ride as often now with a kid so it doesn’t seem worth it. So now my activity is running. If that new bike was like $2500 and same spec I would be mountain biking every weekend. Still watch the show regularly tho.

    Inflation my ass. These prices are up another 60% from the 60% in 2020. Whats going on is greedy bike companies and cyclists that are willing to clamor for the privilege of overpaying for shit. It feels like they want to just brag about how much they paid for things.

    Thank you.... Now I know that Brexit is the cause of high prices for parts in Sweden!!!
    I am from the UK and live in Sweden and work as a professional bike mechanic and agree you are correct with observations of raw materials and shipping costs but did not mention the low availability of parts and fuel costs.
    Understanding here is that things will not get back to normal with the supply chain until 2024!! I do not think this will change the prices of parts though?
    gave up watching at 5:49 due to the political viewpoint.... such a shame!

    Componentry??? The elephant in the room is the prices of the bikes themselves! Christ allmighty what has happened? Regardless of material cost, and shipping, what is going on with bike prices rising over 30-40%. Ebikes are a category of its own with an immense increase too. Will the increase in gas prices we see now further push prices up as more people will choose to ride bikes to commute?

    If one goes downhill biking, stays in a hotel, and eats in a restaurant, then yes - it is expensive. But there's ways to keep costs low. Other then downhill biking, you don't pay to ride trails (you just contribute by helping build the trails). And you can stay in hostels or camp. And you can eat sandwiches and quaff tall cans instead of dropping a brown back in a restaurant.

    Many Companies are testing the boundries of prices. If we pay it, the prices will stay the same. If demand falls, so will prices. Its coplicated bht no matter what happens, the little guys (bike businesses) loose! The big bike copaniss stand to buy out the little guys and make bank.

    If they keep building better bikes the best bikers will buy them and it creates a problem. Those bikers design and build trails, and they design more complex trails built for great bikes with the best suspension and for their skills..and then everyone needs the “right” bikes for the trails they’re riding. Adding to that the rate of inflation…meh!

  • @vlbz
    @vlbz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Almost all factors might get better, except inflation. Money is getting worthless, and that's will just get worse not better. I hope prices will go down, but honestly I expect things to get more expensive. A lot more expensive.

    Prices wont go down until the Chinese brands start taking over by undercutting them, and even then that’s a big maybe. At the end of the day, big companies only really care about profit. Your passion and personal feelings for the sport are irrelevant.

  • @ClarkKasheta
    @ClarkKasheta 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wouldn't say this problem is unique to MTB. I'm a musician too (drums, specifically), and really it all comes down to what the consumer is willing to pay, even if that means financing/going into debt. And a lot of that is driven by product hype. Certain components and brands are marketed as "must-haves," and consumers are willing to pay the price just to keep up with the Joneses. Manufacturers can charge a lot, because people have shown that they are willing to pay a lot. The market will only change if people change their spending habits.

  • @adamduncan6172
    @adamduncan6172 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ppl will never stop paying exorbitant prices for mediocre/everyday gear.
    Not that all Mtb gear is mediocre, but even the lower bike companies are cashing in on their crap ever since Covid.

  • @hexrag5901

    looking into the financials of companies like shimano they are currently making record breaking profits. But sure lets just blame the supply chain and every other reason. They've put their prices up because they can. Sales have been increasing even at these raised prices so they will continue to be sky high until demand drops
