    I’ve been working on an aisan carb that’s very similar on my Corolla every weekend for two months. I even had it professionally rebuilt. I’m still struggling with it but I have watched your video about 5 times and get an enlightment every time.

    I fully agree with staton tivers!!! This is the most informative video on adjusting the 2e carburetor. Thanks for the upload.
    Looking forward to more videos from ya!! I have an idle problem (sputters and stalls) on a similar Aisan carb mounted in a Suzuki swift 1.3L (Geo Metro). It now runs fine after adjusting the fuel mixture as you described!!

    Hey there Mate, hope you're doing great. TBH, you've helped me a lot by making the Videos all about 2E engines, i have a 1984 AE80 Corolla with a 2E Performance swap, and I wasn't able to get the Auto Choke to run correctly, I set the dashpot to 2000RPM as per your video and also my Idle Speed. But the Fast Idle was being a pain for me, and your guide helped me so much, I was able to do it successfully today and finally when it starts cold, the Fast Idle steadily rises to 1600 RPM and drops when the engine reaches the certain temperature.
    If it wasn't for you, I would have been stuck for life in this one segment.
    Once again, Thanks A Bunch. Stay Safe & Stay Well.

    Just took mine apart. I have been restoring a toyota tercel and did the carb last winter. I just finished putting the car together now in the summer, went for its first test drive and it ran like crap! I checked the carb on the side of the road, the accelerator pump didnt squirt and i managed to make it run better after clearing the fuel filter. The petrol was bright orange. I barely made it home it ran so bad. I took the fuel system apart and emptied the tank. The gas was full of water and something that looks like oil or something. The carb was full of a gello type material that had clogged the bowl and everything. Hope it will work tomorrow!

      If the cold idle speed is excessive, this can be adjusted via the cold idle adjustment screw (on the accelerator cable linkage as shown in the video). They typically run up to around 2000-2500rpm when the fast idle breaker has not yet actuated the green cam. Hope this helps

    I've picked up a 4k carb for a Suzuki. It has a mechanical secondary, but the thing I can't get my head around is the weighted flap that sits above the secondary butterfly. Is this supposed to be hooked up to anything else to open? Just seems to be sitting there by itself and I can't see any correlation with it and the throttle linkage/choke/anything...

    • @KieranSmit
      @KieranSmit 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      And it's just occurred to me that given the design, it could be vacuum operated internally by the throats themselves.

    Thanks for the info.
    Just one question, does the choke breaker cam automatically go to the fully closed position on a cold engine when you step on the throttle?
    Mine either doesn't fully return or usually slips from the fast idle block which causes my cold start to run only at around 1200 rpm

    Hi how do you increase performance and also need to adjust to make it lighter on fuel? Idle is perfect cold start and warm up, but It just needs adjustment to be leaner and lighter in fuel, but not compromising in power thanks.

    • @notcompletelyobsolete
      @notcompletelyobsolete  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For best fuel economy, keeping everything stock and within adjustment such as timing and valve clearance will help. These engines are quite good on fuel as they are. If you are chasing more performance, the engine is limited by its displacement and aging cylinder head design but there are some ways to get more power out of it. Check out the Rugged Garage youtube channel, they have done some good work on these 2E engines to get more out of them. Cheers

    • @leemoodley1355
      @leemoodley1355 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@notcompletelyobsolete thanks so much for the reply.....well not really needing the performance only to be lighter so wanted to know which screw to adjust as I had to change the carb but it just needs adjustment?

    • @notcompletelyobsolete
      @notcompletelyobsolete  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the carb is running rich, I would check the colour of the spark plugs. If they are black and sooty then the issue could be incorrect float height or stuck choke flap possibly. If the plugs are a brown chocolate or coffee colour, then the carb will be operating well if the vehicle still drives smooth. The adjustments I have shown on the carb only affect low speed circuits and its up to the jet sizes to determine the fuel metering with wide open throttle. I have never found the jets to wear bigger over time and probably best to leave these as they were. Hope this helps

    • @notcompletelyobsolete
      @notcompletelyobsolete  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Possibly a vacuum leak or incorrectly set idle mixture screw… the dashpot acting on the throttle linkage (on the side of the carb opposite the accelerator cable) is designed to reduce any backfiring. Exhaust leaks can also cause small pops when coasting. Hope you figure it out

  • @iforce2d
    @iforce2d ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video. 7:15 "this one sets idle speed when the engine is warm". My 1E engine (which seems to have the same carburetor) is idling too high when warm. I can make it idle faster with that screw, but when trying to make it slower there is a certain point after which turning that screw further makes no difference. If I press very hard on the lever that the throttle pedal pulls (but in the opposite direction) I can make it idle a little lower at a good speed (even though it doesn't feel like I moved the lever more than a fraction of a millimeter) and when I let go the idle speed returns to the too-high level again. Any tips?
    I just bought this car recently and the previous owner had fabricated an input on the underside of the air-cleaner, and had connected the PCV valve output into the air-cleaner, and the air filter was absolutely filthy. Why would they do that I wonder... I have since reconnected it to the normal input on the carb body, but I'm wondering if that has made the carb very dirty inside and it just needs a good old clean.

    • @iforce2d
      @iforce2d ปีที่แล้ว

    After I shut the engine off, the float chamber leaks fuel (probaly all of it) on top of the secondary butterfly valve. (4AF engine)
    During running the float level is correct.

    • @notcompletelyobsolete
      @notcompletelyobsolete  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Possibly water pump, blocked radiator, thermostat… Cheap non oem thermostats can cause trouble and generally are less accurate at regulating the engine temperature. Another more serious cause could be a blown head gasket aerating the coolant and blowing out the overflow. Hope its an easy fix for you!

      As the alternator needs to meet the electrical demand of the vehicle accessories, it requires more power from the engine. Unfortunately these carbs don’t have a means to increase the idle as the load on the engine increases. A slight increase on the idle speed screw can help with a vibrating engine from too low rpms

    Mine keep floating... The mechanic has been trying to adjust and adjust.. This the the third day.
    Last night it even spilled fuel.
    Note : I am using this carburetor for an old Jetta VW version 2.

      Sounds to me like an issue with the float not sealing, jamming up or having an incorrectly set height. I would start there, cheers!

    Sir can you tell me the jets size of 2e carb

  • @jaars911
    @jaars911 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I almost bought a new carb thats over 2000ZAR because the car left me at the side of the road many times, then someone said the carb is dirty and he then switched the spark leads of nr2 and nr3 and rev the car a few times that it back fired into the carb and that fixed it. I later took the carb off and cleaned it with carb cleaner

    Thanks for the video,
    I have the same engine,
    What can cause rough idle when I turn my high beam on!?!?
    Or radio + heater fan
    I changed the battery, and the charger, also the plugs, I cleaned the carp too!
    Nothing, still the same..

    • @notcompletelyobsolete
      @notcompletelyobsolete  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As the alternator needs to meet the electrical demand of the vehicle accessories, it requires more power from the engine. Unfortunately these carbs don’t have a means to increase the idle as the load on the engine increases. A slight increase on the idle speed screw can help with a vibrating engine from too low rpms

    Any chance on you doing something similar on the Aisan V-series? We still got tons Corollas with hem rolling around and getting junked because people get bamboozled.

    • @notcompletelyobsolete
      @notcompletelyobsolete  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ive never had the chance to work on one however I have heard that its quite common for people to swap them out in favor of the k type twin venturi. The v-type slide carbs are much less reliable and more complicated to work on
