You should also check the length of the shaft coming off of the distributor to the oil pump because of its aftermarket like it is there's two lengths there's a short in a long and you will burn your motor up because the oil pump won't be turning

If this has an oil pressure-driven timing chain tensioner it could be that it has pulled back with the engine not running and the chain has stripped the teeth on the camshaft gear. To be honest, if it's happened now just trying to start it for the first time then it could be a good thing as, if trying to start it was enough to strip the camshaft gear it wasn't a good part so it would have worn out really quickly anyway and if that had happened with the engine running it could well have wrecked it. I would also suggest checking over everything else on the engine, if they were working with specs for a standard 302 as they were with the firing order then they might have things like the valve clearances set for a 302. If they're different between a 302 and a 302HO, and they probably are, that would give what you saw with it popping back through the carb as you probably have inlet valves hanging open...
gosportjamie small block fords do not have timing chain tensioners. And the valves are most likely non adjustable. Stock sbf has bolt down rockers with non adjustable valve lash.

@@TheMrSeanrocks OK I understand it was dirty. but Edelbrock bought the rights from Carter AFB to produce this carb. Best Carb ever made. Watch out not to smash metering rods when putting the top back on. Correct procedure for that is take the metering rods out of the top before putting the top back on. So put the top on with out the rods in then put the rods in later. Many many people make that mistake and destroy the metering rods and say this carb is junk but they ruined the metering rods by forcing them in the holes because they wouldnt line up. Its impossible to install them while they are still in the top. you have to remove them by taking the dime sized cover off with the little screw it. there is a spring under the rod. After they are out and the top is back on then put them in buy replacing the spring then gently tap the rod by gently bouncing your finger on it until it goes into the metering jet. hold it down and put the dime sized cover back on it.
Maybe it broke because it was so loose? I've had that happen to me because it was soooo loose, it jumped off and ate itself. Hope y'all have a good day tho! Cheers!

Put a 429 in that thing and you will never ever be disappointed again, my dad had 429 in his 1970 4x4, and it would roast the 40's all day long, we actually hit a 1500 pound giant horse In The middle of the night with it and it drove home fine pushed In the cab by the windshield was pretty mangled but she drove home!!!!!!!!!😉😆😎
At least you're not pushing a FE with a cast iron FMX.Fmx,one of the few autos you can push start...
Duc Canard I had one in my 77 F100 with a 400 someone swapped in.. thing was SHOT. No park.. no reverse.
You took off the good Carter AFB carb and put on a crappy ford one the carter is superior. I guess that is a 289?
It was a Edelbrock carb and when we pulled it apart it was full of bad gas and terribly needed a rebuild the motor would have never ran with it on
@@TheMrSeanrocks OK I understand it was dirty. but Edelbrock bought the rights from Carter AFB to produce this carb.
That carb will eventually go back on because the one that is on it is mine anyway
@@TheMrSeanrocks The dumbest thing was changing the firing order on that 302. It was right when he started and now he snapped the cam gear.
It's a 302 HO they have a different firing order the the regular 302s that's why we did that
timing , choke plate not staying shut .
Maybe it broke because it was so loose? I've had that happen to me because it was soooo loose, it jumped off and ate itself. Hope y'all have a good day tho! Cheers!
4.6 engine swap...
Or throw a timing chain in it...
I don't know why you didn't just buy a low pressure carburetor electric fuel pump. They're like $30 at AutoZone...
