Well Derek, this is my thought. Being this truck looks like a smaller version of you're big square body you just finished. You and Bentley should do the engine & tranny swap. Then you could put Little Grip Garage on the doors. I think that would be so cool to have those two truck in your shop. Also in the future you & your son can go on power tours together with them.
Hey there Derek just want to let you know that you made the last months of my Dad's life v much easier to go through. He was sent home on hospice in August of last year and while he was in the hospital he discovered your show. And he just love you and how you could just make anything work. I would love to see you make her into a going to town rig and not strip her for parts (besides, she looks great and has a title!). Also, instead of a V8, I think it would be a lot more interesting to do a budget rebuild of that 6 cylinder and do some budget performance mods to it. Would be much more unique than just another V8 swap. Thanks for all you guys do!!
MUCH BETTER GAS MPG's when ya talkin straigt6 over the LS SHOP TRUCK ??? RIGHT??? :) he said something about 30 to 60 miles each way when he was sending the wommen out for parts when the WHOLE CREW was FIXIN UP THE CREW(cab) .... eh, that would be reason for me :) fuel SIPPER vs. FUEL GUZZLER ;)
As a channel fan from up north of the 49th, my vote is that you keep the rig together and make it run again. I'd like to further suggest a theme for it - since it was built in Canada, how about turning it into the Can-Am Friendship Rig? The Maple Leaf and Star look damn good together! Cheers from your neighbours and friends on this side of the border!
Wow! What a beautiful truck! When you started washing the crud off, I was impressed! KEEP IT! Don't strip it! And with high gas prices these days, there ain't a thang wrong with keeping and rebuilding that straight six. They are rare these days and great work trucks! And sometimes us cheaper folks really appreciate a standard rebuild, not everything has to be a hot rod!
Even though they're gutless, I like the simplicity and space the inline 6 has under the hood. It would be cool to see if a head gasket revives the old truck.
Couldn't agree more. Those 250's weren't called sewing machines for nothin. Simple, reliable, easy to repair and they still have good aftermarket support. You can put an updated 4 barrel manifold on it and run 650CFM on it. It'll breath a little easier and be pretty torquey for what it is. Now if he really want to go fancy, he could get a sniper efi and that thing would start no matter what the temperature, weather, etc... And the a simple header on with a glass pack. Perfection. I think the KISS method is best here though. I'd pull the head, see if it and the block are ok and go from there. BUT, I'd definitely upgrade it to a 4 barrel no matter what. What a nice truck.
Gutless doesn't even begin to tell the story, my dad had one of these (1979 model "Custom Deluxe") and that thing couldn't get out of the way of its own shadow. But for $750 dollars in 1986, it was a real bargain.
Everything happens for a reason Derek. The engine swap has even been started for you; it would be rude not to keep it going. It does mean you still need a parts truck, or a box at least, but that rig's way too nice to break for parts. You asked Bentley and he had no doubts: no point in asking if you're not going to listen to him.😂
Can always come out to Oregano (oregun) if you're really after a rust free bed, we've got grave yards of old square bodies out here being a salt free chebby/Ford state :p
That time lapse looking at the front of the truck was a great touch. I'm with the little human I say keep on her, and transplant the 350. Whatever you do just know I love your channel and will watch until the day you hang it up or they throw dirt over me. I pray for many blessings for you and your family, and hope your mitt heals up soon.
I have watched so many of your videos and always enjoyed each of them. While watching this older one I realized that one of my favorite parts is when you have the boys helping out. They act like they enjoy helping and I believe that work is good for them. Thanks for including them and your wife in this.
That's definitely a truck to save. I'd like to see you find out if it's the head gasket, head, cracked block etc. It would be great to bring it back with that straight 6.
Comedy gold. Derek, you’re a very funny guy. It amazes me how you can be alone in a field with a camera and have the imagination, energy, passion and sense of humour to make these videos. Your filming, editing and comic timing are up there with your amazing mechanical skill. Thank you for doing another rescue / revival. With your personality it never gets old. You inspired me to do a revival and it is taking months. It’s fun. But it gives me an inkling into how difficult it is to knock these videos out each Friday.
It's pretty nice to see functional kids that can do something with their hands. Good job on parenthood, right there! Oh, and a great vid, like always ^^
I'm so glad I found this channel yesterday! This guy has to be one of the funniest people working on cars. This series of videos are going to be some of my favorites I've watched three now and have been laughing since. Good job my man keep it up, please.
Looks to me like a perfect Little Grip Garage shop truck! Let your boys head up the project, and you can "assist"! I think that would be a blast, and an awesome project for you and your awesome family. :-) Thanks for all of your hard work, Derek!
I vote for doing the engine tranny swap, Love Kevin's idea of making "Little Grip Garage" - I really appreciate your inclusion of your family in these videos. Your boys are totally awesome! Yours is by far my favorite channel on the YT - Thank You not only for the entertainment, but also for teaching by example how to be a great American, Dad, and friend to so many people.👍
You call that a failure? Looked like a bit of family magic to me. We got to see you get your hands into it, and then we got to see the whole reason why you do what you do. It's been awhile since I've gotten choked up about anything. Seeing your family with you on a dig was just what the doctor ordered. Awesome.
Agree 100% There was a chain bolted for pulling the engine. I gasped then it popped off, figured it was going to be locked up tighter than.. GZ in bringing the fire one last time. Oh, replace engine and drive, don't part. But, let that motor go. Still would be cool to see a rebuild on it... but then again. no, lets do the right thing.
I'm with Bentley. Keep it. I would even rebuild the straight 6. Everybody does a V8 swap and there's nothing wrong with that but I love the old straight sixes so would keep this a super base truck. Slow and simple.
Such a shame to kill it for its parts when it's so close to being a good rig! Would love for you and Bently to do an engine swap! Some paint healing would be cool too!
Man, that load and tow home at night brought back many memories of back in the day when I was hustling cars. That's a good woman like I have, to drop everything and come pick you up.
Since the 'Maro is a goner, and so's this motor, it'd behoove us all to see you merge the two! Then, once it's all running, the interior makeover you did on the blue one would bear repeating! Love this channel!
Man, that rearward facing shot as you towed the rig home at night.. that was a heck of a great shot. Great idea. Something about seeing that grill in the soft red glow of the taillights. Like it was happy going to its new home, almost like a rescue pet. Great work as always. Such great editing and as always, entertaining, interesting, and educational. Another winner.
ChristopherBix --- I agree with you. That was a great bit of cinematography. It portrayed all the right feelings, the time lapse, the lighting(as in the vehicle lights, reflections, against the dark) it all came together and made for a great shot.
I love seeing your son wanting to be involved wrenching on cars. I love watching his Little Grip Garage channel. He reminds me of me when I was his age. My dad worked a full time job at RCA in Dunmore, PA in the 70's and 80's and would work on cars at night in our small 2 car garage. Of course, I had to be there with him, soaking up every bit of knowledge I could get. He also had a Briggs and Stratton dealership so we also worked on power equipment. I learned so much from him. He passed away in 2007 at 61 and I inherited all of his tools and shop equipment. Every time I do some wrenching, I can't help but think of him and everything he taught me.
Derek you are my favorite person to watch. You have gotten me through the hardest time of my life. And helped me begin my first project. Keep on doing what you do. I’ll be dipped !
I love how everything Derek gets is " sight unseen" lol. His videos are so refreshing, no matter how long you been watching his channel. A guy here loves these videos from a personal standpoint.
It's definitely too nice to part out. Please scoot that 350 in there maybe with some nice old school bolt-ons. Love your contents Derick. I've been watching for a few years now and recently joined your Facebook group. Thank you for all you do and for saving so many great old rigs. Thank you for keeping it family friendly too. God bless.
Not a parts truck. That one needs to be saved. I like everything you do. Power tour. Independence burn out car. The revivals are how I found you. The variety of content is awesome too. Keep doing what you do. Very family friendly content. You have earned your success, and my respect.
Love the truck! I think it’s too nice to have it as a parts truck, definitely make a build out of it, but I’m gonna go against the grain here and say rebuild the 250 I6, nobody’s ever done that on TH-cam I think. Maybe give it to one of the boys once they’re older or keep it as a farm truck
hey Derek, I was watching this with my dad and he came up with the idea of taking the engine out of that red corvette and sticking it in the custom deluxe, great content as always!
Watching this channel makes me want to work on my own chevys. Quite entertaining yet informative. Learned a lot about older vehicles watching these too.
in this time of high gas prices how about a custom rebuild of the 6 with an emphasis on getting the best gas mileage out of it? that's a nice foundation of a truck! Don't strip it. Love your channel.
She's a keeper! Judging by the condition of the body & box, she was loved on for most of her life. Also, it's hard to beat on them when there's only a six in the power barn. I'm betting you'll find a lot underneath that's still in good shape, like bushings, bearings, etc.
Every young feller who helps his Dad as well as Bentley, should have the privilege of designing his first pickup. I say, let Bently design this pickup from start to finish! Theme it out as a crossover from Little Grip to Vice Grip! Bentley is THE MAN on this one! Go Dad!
I'm always down for keepin' rigs, but either way I want to see that 250 built! If the block ain't cracked. Horsepower TV built a 292 and turbo'd it and they stopped at 500 ftlbs because the bottom end wasn't built. Had more to give. That in this truck or a short box would be awesome!
@@FUCK_________googIe check out the horsepower TV build if you haven't seen it. They did a 292 Chevy straight six and did a legit stock rebuild on it. Then turbod it. They also did a Ford 300 and it was real stupid. They anticipated boost on it so built it and pushed it a little harder
Derek, I would definitely swap the engine on that pickup and get it back on the road. Having a couple of square bodies myself, i totally understand being torn on parting out good rigs or not. Really lovin' all of the content you put out. Keep up the great work feller!
You are awesome! I watch you regularly, but our Cable service has been out for 2 days for half of the Texas Gulf Coast, so I've been catching up with you and your projects. I laughed to tears at this episode! You are Blessed with a wonderful family! A "Guy ought to keep up the Good Work...... I DONT Know!" Bob Rockport, TX.
IMO You're definitely raising those boys right. Passing along your knowledge is something they'll take with them the rest of their lives. And Jessica is such a good sport to help you the way she does. A fellers hat is definitely off to you my friend
I think she's too nice to tear apart so I'd vote for an engine overhaul, replace the tires, and a sealing coat on the body. Glad you showed it's important to know when to change plans due to circumstances and just get yourself home safely. Kuddos to Jessica for another looonnnngggg drive. Thanks for another great video!!!!!
The viewing numbers are insane , this is sooo good . Great family support there and that truck has great bones… fixer upper for sure “ better than factory”, thank you ( again, again 😊).
Thanks for another great episode. I’d like to see this old rig back on the road with the original motor, if it’s only a head gasket. Anything worse, drop in the 350. Just my 2 cents. Keep ‘em coming!
I vote to keep it intact if at all possible. Look, pull the engine since it’s pretty much ready to pull anyway, then break it down to see how bad the damage is. From there you can decide to rebuild the I6 or swap in the 350. It’s only original once as the old saying goes. Everything else looks easily rescued. Ok, the interior needs work but that’s not to bad on the old budget.
I always have seconds thought on these type of things. Looking for parts and a couple of truck restores... but wow, If you can keep it 'deluxe' Canadiana original... either way it is a nice find.
I really admire how you try so hard to “Bring it around” in the face of so much adversity. I totally relate to becoming attached to a vehicle the more you work on it. I also like how you make the video whether it drives or trailers home. Thanks so much for the content !!👍
I believe for how well she aged, she deserves to live on. What a pretty rig! Got a real soft spot for the square body. Just sad I let about seven go over the years, along with e few blazers also. Love watching keep it up!!
In general, square bodies tend to age better than many others, regardless of their color or condition, especially if clean and straight but faded. Ford has had some versions of the F150 that have not aged so well, even if in prime condition stylistically wise and in general, a basic Deluxe square body will be a better looker at 40+ old now in comparison.
Way too nice to part out. Definitely could be a great goin' to town rig. If it was mine it'd get a small block, lowered a couple of inches, and shine juice on the paint. Derek you had me laughing out loud the whole first half of this revival. Great video, love the revivals!
Derek, I absolutely agree with the feller who said make it a project with Bentley and put little grip garage decals on the side and have both shop trucks. That's an amazing idea.
I love it when you have your family involved in your shenanigans, really makes my day. And she definitely deserves a good repower and rebuild, looking forward to that.
Derek, absolutely love your will it run and drive home videos. I know you are busy, but these videos are so refreshing, and I laugh until my sides hurt at your jokes and antics. I think this truck is deserving of your 350, it will make a great going to town rig. Love it when your family is involved, and Jessica is a real sweetheart to drive 3 1/2 hours to come and bail you out of a mess. She is surely a keeper. As always, another great video.
I bought one of those brand new. It was a 305 4bbl auto 4wd, white w/blue interior. It drove wonderful and I loved it. I bought it to build my house and it carried a lot of supplies. I think the 350 engine would be great. I would love to see you restore it to the road. It would make a great going to town truck or one of your boys would enjoy it.
Man, the family effort in making these videos, the unquestioning support, and involvement is super cool to watch. Thank you to the VGG family! Build that truck, keep it together, she's a looker!
"I'll be dipped" that's one clean rig definitely a good engine swap candidate I think. Glad to see another will it run video. Looking forward to the next one.
“Why do we have exhaust coming out of the cooling system” - lol. ;) You are a star! Enjoying your episodes soo much & yes please keep that one and swap sth nice into it. Here in Austria I’d be happy to find a rig like this at all and couldn’t dare to take apart! :-)
Pretty great and straight old truck that is amazingly unmolested. Could rebuild the 6 banger as everyone does the V8 - make good content seeing what the damage is and personally I've a soft spot for the old Chev straight six ( we had an Aussie version that taught me all I know about engines... so, not much), get the A/C etc all working. Maybe add a brake booster. You could even hot-rodder a bit, bigger cam, manifold, four barrel or one of those carb-injection thingama hoops. Weld those holes in the box, do some basic body work like on the drivers door, sand and paint the bonnet OR leave as is- clean and clear coat it. Spit shine 'er. Done.
This is my favorite youtube channel. Derek's sense of humor keeps me smiling. I hope you swap the power and make another runner. Keep up the good work.
Absolutely great episode! I’d love to see her turn into a proper going to town rig… Seems like she beggin to get back on the road with some extra horses under the hood
I'd rebuild the inline 6, and add a non integrated head.. they make performance parts for it too.. everyone is doing LS, and old school small block swaps, the 6 is a sweet little motor, and is different. The makings of a good daily driver, and gets good gas mileage too 😉
I agree. Pop the top off the inline to see if any cracks then make the decision weather to swap a V8. It's two wheel drive, should make decent fuel mileage either way.
I have an 81 C10 that had the 250 in it. It was gutless. Rated at 100hp new. Mine was a manual- I can't imagine how much worse it would be with an auto. It was very reliable. 400k miles before it died, then swapped a 350/th350 and never looked back. I don't think a guy who likes big blocks and blowers would be happy with that ol straight 6
I think you can remove the heads and check it out. If no cracks, you have a good engine, its worth the work involved in it! Good luck and great video!!
Derek, I reckon that head gasket has a pin hole or three in her. Definitely a keeper rig though! Thanks for the hard work and great content. P.S. I think rebuilding the inline 6 and slappin a sushi slicer on it would be pretty cool.
Agree on the inline 6. Not the fastest but oh so reliable. I had the passenger 250 in a '74 basic (and I mean, basic) 4 door Nova back in the 1980's, it had, 0 options, yes, ZERO options, outside of heat and PS/PB, and I bet they were standard by then. Even had rubber floor mats and radio delete even. Bought it from my sister and her ex in 1983 and the ONLY big thing was replacing rocker arms due to Mt St Helens when it blew in May 1980. They drove through Eastern Washing about a month later with the ash still on the ground and he should have replace them all when the first one went. Didn't do the motor any good as the valves got beat some so it was a bit of a smoker at 145K, but reliable as the day is long though. All they added was a Basic Sears AM/FM cassette deck with 2, 2-way 6x9's in the back deck and that was that.
Excellent episode. I was actually glad you called in the cavalry and had it towed. Sometimes those barely making it home episodes are hard to watch. My vote is save it!

Nice truck. Looks like it would be a good candidate for a simple engine swap and put her back on the road.
That and some serious interior love and its good to go...
I agree its a too nice of a body for parts only, give her a little TLC and a nice engine under the power barn, she'll be a nice town rig
Probably what somebody else was trying to do. That puppy was headed for a v-8 swap
Swap the drive train from the rotted shorty sitting on rusty acres that he's been snagging parts from already.

Your lingo & the way your soft spoken it’s perfect for working on an old beater ! Love the energy man
Appreciate that you are willing to show the outcome, win or lose. And I agree: this one might just be too nice to part out.
FYI I LOVE the variety of content you provide. It's always something new an interesting. Thanks for taking us a long!
Thanks Adam
Keep doing what you do, I enjoy all your content. Always put your family first that's what makes you the man
That time lapse looking at the front of the truck was a great touch.
Put the 350 in it. Great use of that drivetrain.
@@henryrempel4750 22HP briggs!!!!!!
Awesome.
Thanks Michael
Agree 100% There was a chain bolted for pulling the engine. I gasped then it popped off, figured it was going to be locked up tighter than.. GZ in bringing the fire one last time. Oh, replace engine and drive, don't part. But, let that motor go. Still would be cool to see a rebuild on it... but then again. no, lets do the right thing.
I'm with Bentley. Keep it. I would even rebuild the straight 6. Everybody does a V8 swap and there's nothing wrong with that but I love the old straight sixes so would keep this a super base truck. Slow and simple.
Agree 100%
I agree too
Or a I6 Atlas swap
In Brazil those Chevy 4.1/S straight 6s are treasured, the blocks are overbuilt as fuck and drag racers can pull over 1000hp from them
Keep the 4.1 and turbo it ebay kit !!!
I am in tears when you looked at the air cleaner! OHHHH NOOOOO! The 2 Barra! 🤣🤣 I have worked on those and I feel your pain!
Going through a real dark time in my life. Your videos help a guy get through. Thanks for all you do.
Such a shame to kill it for its parts when it's so close to being a good rig! Would love for you and Bently to do an engine swap! Some paint healing would be cool too!
I would thoroughly enjoy a quick tear down of that engine just to find out what is actually wrong with it.
That’s in unbelievable shape, I think that needs to stay together, drop a v8 in it but keep it complete
Agreed, using this for a parts truck is wasteful
Yep with gas prices the way they are put v8 in it
Man, that rearward facing shot as you towed the rig home at night.. that was a heck of a great shot.
If a guy ain't careful, Hollywood might come calling for those editing skillz.
Great job as always ! Swap the 3fiddys and geter back on the road.
agreed that was a great shot
Chevro-lett Deloox-ay.....your terminology cracks me up. Enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work.
I’m already in love with this truck. She deserves a V8 and an interior restoration.
This truck is too straight to part out. I'd save on it.
as a squarebody addict, I concur!
Miss your channel, Buddy!
I think this ones a keeper. Someone loved this truck before so i think a VGG restore is in order. God bless you and your family.
My first truck was an '82 Scottsdale. Lot of love for those 82s! Great video, as always!
Well I’ll be dipped!! Nothing better than a Friday night VGG revival video! Your awesome Derek!
Derek you are my favorite person to watch. You have gotten me through the hardest time of my life. And helped me begin my first project. Keep on doing what you do. I’ll be dipped !
Hang in there Zack, keep yourself busy. You will be good dude. Keep in touch.
"Keep the truck. Make it run." Wise words.
I love how everything Derek gets is " sight unseen" lol. His videos are so refreshing, no matter how long you been watching his channel. A guy here loves these videos from a personal standpoint.
I think it needs an engine swap and a restoration, that body looks solid!
That rig looks to gooder to part out, think you could bring her right back around with the home crew you got. GOD bless you guy's.
Build it. Great foundation. I’ll even drive over from East Tennessee to help ya.
I say you keep this one together. It’s an awfully nice unit. Wouldn’t be a bad farm rig for the boys…
Love the videos I know it's a little late but that 79 Camaro motor would be sweet in this truck!
I’m so proud of the boys for being so helpful and loading up the truck. Great video, great show. You guys are awesome!!!!
Rite!...its great to see boys being boys!...hanging with dadand getting their hands dirty its refreshing
Turbo the 6. Maybe even make it shine.
Great idea. If not that please at least open up the 250 for us to see if there was simply a head gasket failure, or something more serious going on.
You could do the rebuild on little grip garage channel.
hey Derek, I was watching this with my dad and he came up with the idea of taking the engine out of that red corvette and sticking it in the custom deluxe, great content as always!
Great idea!
Go Dad!
Big fan of your videos! Hard to find family friendly content these days that’s entertaining and fun to watch. One of my most favorite channels.
I'm always down for keepin' rigs, but either way I want to see that 250 built! If the block ain't cracked. Horsepower TV built a 292 and turbo'd it and they stopped at 500 ftlbs because the bottom end wasn't built. Had more to give. That in this truck or a short box would be awesome!
lmfao i said the same thing. i said "put a holley sniper on it, china turbo, and see if you can make 400hp for less than $1500"
@@FUCK_________googIe considering the holley setup will cost 1000 to 1500 im gonna say... No
@@FUCK_________googIe check out the horsepower TV build if you haven't seen it. They did a 292 Chevy straight six and did a legit stock rebuild on it. Then turbod it. They also did a Ford 300 and it was real stupid. They anticipated boost on it so built it and pushed it a little harder
Let’s not overlook just how amazing Jessica is She put in a bunch of miles in one day
And puts up with Derek's crazy ideas. Perfect couple.
I DONT Know!"
Bob Rockport, TX.
Too good to be a parts truck!
Definitely keep this one, and as others have said maybe build into a little grip project 👍
Yup, that would be great. Keeping it a bone stock honest work truck. She's held up fine all those years, why not honour it by keeping it original?
I vote to keep it intact if at all possible. Look, pull the engine since it’s pretty much ready to pull anyway, then break it down to see how bad the damage is. From there you can decide to rebuild the I6 or swap in the 350. It’s only original once as the old saying goes. Everything else looks easily rescued. Ok, the interior needs work but that’s not to bad on the old budget.
I love the sound of a smooth running I6!
I always have seconds thought on these type of things. Looking for parts and a couple of truck restores... but wow, If you can keep it 'deluxe' Canadiana original... either way it is a nice find.
I'd love to see a feller rebuilding that l6
This one deserves an engine swap and getting it back to being roadworthy, too nice to tear apart.
Man that sucker is straight 🤘🏼Go back white w/ rallys & white letters
Quite a "pristine" rig for this channel. It deserves some of your tender loving care.👌
Family friendly is important. Love it
I bought one of those brand new.
Perfect timing my friend. In a chaotic world one thing just stays the same. VGG. Thank you and yours for this Derek!
Done.
Definitely worth rebuilding… do a series on that … I’d love to see that :-)
This is my favorite youtube channel.
The makings of a good daily driver, and gets good gas mileage too 😉
I agree. The price of the old petroleum these days. You could scoot that around without having to sell your kid's kidneys to keep it fed.
I agree. Pop the top off the inline to see if any cracks then make the decision weather to swap a V8. It's two wheel drive, should make decent fuel mileage either way.
@@danhiggins7798 that's good advice, especially when our guy already has the 8 to swap in. The 6 may not be worth the salvage.
You can't always diagnose a cracked block without pulling the engine and stripping it down to the bare bone.
I'm in favor of replacing the head gasket... six in a row and ready to tow is more interesting than the V8 literally everyone else has.
I was thinking the same but by how rusty that spark plug is that cylinder probably needs some work
@@MrRacer1986 All the more reason! I don't think he's done that yet
I love when you post videos. Your family is definitely one of a kind
It is such a joy to watch you get these cars driving. Very good video. Thanks to you and your wife and crew.
Excellent episode. I was actually glad you called in the cavalry and had it towed. Sometimes those barely making it home episodes are hard to watch. My vote is save it!
