I don't know why new builds have their CUs in central locations, it's ridiculous. As for the duff day, they happen every now again as someone of your experience knows. The important thing is to take something of value away from it so that you're not caught out in the same way again. I've used experiences like this to bolster my terms and conditions or to change how I approach certain jobs. As an example here, where duff information has been provided by the client which affects the complexity of the work or even ends up cancelling it, I would tweak my terms to state that a call-out charge or fixed-fee is still applicable, and those terms would be provided with my estimate for the work. If the client gives the go-ahead, they can't argue over getting a bill if the job gets knocked on the head through their error. When you do get caught out, only let it happen once, then build in protection for yourself so it can't happen again.
Great video mate. Can I ask, prior to each EV install, what’s the best way to obtain an accurate figure for maximum demand for the ENA application form?
I used to refuse remote surveys for EV, got caught out a couple of times. I found that checking on Zoopla or Right Move can often throw up a better idea of the property, floorplans and estate agent photos of every room. Owners often do not understand their own houses' structures, but floor plans tend to show potential horrors or delights. Looking at the roof, the gable ends alignment indicates the roof trust direction, and the likely joist directions (at right angles to trusses, but be aware that stairwells might change some floor joist lines). And knowing which way trusts run helps to identify (suggest) which walls below them are structural and which might be stud. Joists often span the narrower dimensions of rooms below, so knowing the floor plan can also give a lot of clues. Fewer surprises.
I do remote surveys and send a list of requirements that I need to see. The customer supplies this to us. Should the works deviate on the day from what was said/assumed or asked i charge accordingly and also more importantly add all this info into my scope of works, assumptions and accepted works sent to them. Yes I'm caught sometimes on little things but majority of the time I've been okay And upon acceptance take 60% up front. if the work is canceled as yours just was I can't always refund all the works so sometimes keep 25% for restocking fees or let them keep the EV charger
Been there done that one too. customewr insisting the back of the wall was external. Nope.. banged through just inside a toilet as you did. So easy. People don't seam to know their own houses or lack the spacial awareness of room depths.
On these type of installs I try to use smaller trunking for 6mm twin&earth and show the customer how it looks on the wall and sometimes they accept the routing.
Meter installer here.. I agree with the comments about location of the incoming services. It’s almost an afterthought. I’ve been to new builds where they locate the meter in a tiny cupboard at the foot of the stairs that you can’t even get in
Oh how I wish I lived down south. Would have called you to do my charger for sure. Well, the local "sparky" is coming down tomorrow (from energy provider), let's see if he does as good a job as you 🤞 (I especially want to see if he's going to use your recommended D-line EV ultra cable clips 😂)
I enjoyed the video as always. I just wish it was 35 seconds longer so that you could monetise it! I'm sorry the job didn't go your way on this occasion, but it doesn't sound like the customer was helpful in working with you to agree a suitable cable run.
A sparky is a Marine Radio Officer with the Post Master General or Marine Radio General Communications Certificate, that involved 2.5 years full time college study followed by 6 years deep sea or ocean service. They are trained in Marine Electronics Radar and communications as well as power generation, motors, distribution and switch great as a part of the job. An Electrician is just an electrician. Sorry. Adam, I do hope, seeing as the fault does not lie with you or your work, that whoever this YTer is, possibly watching this and reading the comments, that they pay you for at least half a day.
So sparkies want new builders to over spec the builds but most tradesmen don’t build with the future in mind because it means less money in the next job and not so much profit on this job. Agree that houses are so badly designed though. Cable routes are none existent, no dry risers etc. personally I’d over spec but that’s my choice.
Never do a price for anything like this, always hourly, probably why i dont get any of the jobs. Always work local, max travel time 45 mins unless customer is paying for travel time. Not struggled for work or money for the last 16 years
My situation is a little unique I guess where people find me on TH-cam and want me to do the work and I enjoy working for these people but I get everything you say 👍
New builds and new rewires have to have a 6mm cable ran to an outside position and terminated in an adaptable box ready for the possible install of a car charger, they just need to sort the cat6,
As an ex electrician i've seen new builds go up quicker than you can say boo but they don't think about us as electricians and they don't think about how we run things through. In a property that's just been built for a friend of mine I have recommended that you have a external cupboard built at the back of the house with all the boiler the car charger everything you can think of in that one cupboard and it's divided by a safe regulated system with fire sprinklers and Fire suppression system and it has got a foot gap between the wall and the main house wall and this house is about nine bedroom homes and they don't want any cables that could core's fire or boiler system breaking down all they have to do is leave the key code with the engineers and the way they go they don't have to go into the main house the occasion the might have to but it is got all the security stuff everything this box they built on the back of the house was made of Steel and the size of the lock and the size of stuff used it's like safe good video but you need a Gazebo with flaps where you can stick them on the wall when it's bad weather
Can also comment from someone who’s been a working electrical supervisor on newbuilds, the 6mm that gets installed is specified by the designer, as they don’t state the extra cat6 to be installed with it, it’s simply left out. I have been in similar arguments with site managers and clerk of works and they don’t want extra things being installed if it’s not on the original design, even if it’s for future proofing. It’s frustrating to say the least.

Sorry to see that Adam.... We are over the moon with the Simpson & Partners EV install you did for us! :)
Thank you!!!

Great words of advice thank you, all taken on board
Great attitude by you, at least you will never make that mistake again, onwards and upwards 👌
Thank you and yes in my eyes a mistake is not a bad thing, just the quickest way to learn
Brilliant video no other youtube electricians show things like this happening which we have from time to time
Thank you sir 👊

At least you didn't drill into a pipe or cable my man!

I would love to know what they are planning on doing for an EV charger now.
They said they wouldn’t have one 🤷🏻♂️
@@sotaelectrical give them a few weeks of granny charging and I expect they’ll change their minds!
Are They are planning on using a spin bike to charge ev car 😮😂

Still charge the call out bare minimum

Trunking was just a no no on this one

Hi mate thanks for sharing 👍👍
In Ireland it's a recommendation to run a 6sq and a cat 6 for future proofing, works well and saves a lot of hardship later on
Perfect

Good luck! Keep us informed!!
Classic new build, it's all about profits. Your lucky if even get a supply to the garage.
You dont need this....bid them a fond farewell....wish them , all the best,, and LEAVE
Those A3 m25 roadworks are an absolute monstrosity
They are mate I hate the m25

What's wrong with a bit of trunking just to navigate the utility room?
In my opinion the customer was being unreasonable here.
It is what it is, I done what I could
Sometimes it happens, but great advice.
Thank you for sharing!
Hope you charged them for wasted time!!?

Surely better to charge for surveying site yourself and you shouldn’t come a cropper😂 (hope you paid for time spent there )
5 hour round trip is a long way to survey a job
